Tbh I'm not sure how baby Pokemon ended up above legendaries 😅 I think there's just one legendary too many that offends me 😆 Although I'd probably switch them around if I were to redo this lol
Applin could have been a payoff but it just needs an item then again milotic isn’t a payoff unless it’s in a gen with contest stats perhaps arrokuda is gen 8’s payoff
Tbf, there's only supposed to be 1 zacian/1 sword, and it can function perfectly fine without lugging around a sword. It doesn't exactly carry around a sword at all times.
There's also the fact that crowned sword is a battle only form, outside battle it's always in hero of many battles, kinda like how awakened xerneas is battle only
@@brendanboomhour7606 Let's all forget that Zamazenta also has a held item it being the Rusted Shield which changes it's form in battle and for some reason only focus on talking about how bad the cool looking sword wielding dog legendary is I guess. Let's also not mention how the both of them are legendary pokemon so it should cancel out the fact that they hold items putting them at #6 on the list we just watched.
@@FabledSorcerer The shield is integrated into it's design way better than Zacian. Zacian is just holding the sword in its mouth (poorly) and is fairy type? for some reason? You're not wrong for liking it but the argument for not liking it is just as valid
@@FabledSorcerer only talking about how bad something from Sword/Shield is is kind of the default way to talk about those games. Saying good things about anything about them makes you a National-dex hating meanie, Don’t’cha know??
Also, little sister group. Basically pink and cute usually in fairy egg group or are fairies. Then the "yass kween". Florges, Vaspiqueen, Tsareena and that lizard waifu I forgot the name of etc. Frolass also counts.
I think the idea is supposed to be less "pokemon that suck but evolve into something good", and more "pokemon whose whole theme is that they suck but evolve into something majestic"
I would argue that, along with being a pseudo-legend, Beldum fits in with the ‘payoff’ group. I mean, the only move it learns is Take Down until it evolves, which is a pretty horrible move
Farfetch'd is a decent item carrier. It's more plausible than the rest. Leeks are fairly uniform and easily replacable, especially if they're common place plants in the Pokémon world, like medicinal leeks in Hisui.
It also makes sense for fighting types, the type of pokemon literally known for training constantly to have items to help with that. And even for the ones that aren´t fighting type. They are pretty interesting because these kind of pokemon get a unique and pretty distinctive fighting style thanks to the objects they use to fight, their objects are tied to the concept for their design and are made from things that they made or found in nature.
All of them are plausible when you remember that they are also inspired by Yokai and magic and fables...... Like, they are trying to add a weird logic to f***ing magic....
My issue with baby pokemon is that a lot of them felt like they came from pokemon that could have been buffed by an evolution. And maybe that's just Pichu, I always felt like Pikachu (without the light ball of course) and Raichu were pretty weak, and then Pichu is just them but worse. Design wise they are just fine, and some are amazing. Agreed on the round Pokémon.
@@gadobriel5417 Good point. Also the armor it/they wear comes from metal they absorb from war. They're able to draw it out of their bodies to reuse it as armor. So my headcanon is that it literally just summons the sword on its own. (in game, they still summon metals to covered the rusted sword and rusted shield anyways)
I think all of them are great because Pokemon are supposed to be magical creatures based on myths, legends, folklore and monsters.... Like, they are magical creatures.... so is it weird that they have those objects????
While you mentioned evolutions that are multiples of the old form, there is another niche genre I would like to point out- Pokémon that have a bond with another Pokémon. Mantine that literally takes a Remoraid under its wing upon evolution, Slowbro and Slowking that have a symbiotic relationship with that “thing” the anime tried to pass off as a Shellder, and Drakloak and Dragapult that carry around Dreepy with them and even incorporates them into the final evolution’s signature move.
You could also add Shelmet/Karrablast, and even ones that are just intended to be thought of as a pair, like Seviper and Zangoose with their rivalry, since it doesn't really make sense lore-wise to have one without the other. Even Volbeat/Illumise could fit that.
Yeah, Lopunny is definitely furbait, you’re right haha, but it’s not quite the same as those others. Maybe “regional mascots” woulda been a better name haha
Fun video even I would re-arrange some of these rankings. :p I think the only obvious "genre" you missed is probably eeveelutions. Or maybe branched path evolution pokemon in general though that would be a very big group.
Regarding Pokémon carrying an object. Some Pokémon have a good reason why they carry a certain object, like Conkeldurr, for example. Some of its Pokédex entries states that it knows how to make concrete by itself, and it even taught people how to do it in ancient time. Timburr can just find a random log in a wild. And there's more with great reasons. Like yeah, some Pokémon have no reason for carrying objects, but still some Pokémon with good reason need to be credited at least. Or just do a little bit researching before making a conclusion on some Pokémon. Oh, and a reason why some Pokémon carry an exact same looking object is because Game Freak does not want to make for every single Pokémon an individually looking object. :)
In gen 8 an obstagoon acted as a roadblock pokemon if you went back to route 2 when you could surf with the bike. It’s a neat callback to the roadblock pokemon
I'd personally move regional birds up a few spots (and, of course, "Is a Dragon" Pokémon should be moved higher due to the very existence of Altaria), but other than that, this list was very solid. Thanks for another banger, Hoops!
Especially when those dragons surprisingly have deep origins. Altaria is based on a mythical bird with clouds as wings and can turn into a giant fish. Goodra is based on a french legned when a knight fought against a giant snail and there's a type of dragon that hides in cave and then comes out like a snail.
Great video! Some genres I thought of: - Pokémon that evolve via friendship - Pokémon that require a held item to evolve - Pokémon that require an evolution stone to level up - Pokémon who have had type changes with the introduction of new types - Pokémon who have had evolutions in later generations
I would like to point out that Psyduck in gen 4 and maybe zoroark and crustle because of black and white 2 could have been in the "roadblock category".
@@Matthew_Baratheon They may not have been *designed* as roadblocks, but they were used as such and at least deserve to be in the roadblock category as honerable mentions
I think it only makes sense for cubone to hold a skull bone actually and thats why it works. It's carries the bones of its dead mother and wears its skull which is why it makes sense to me. Maybe not all of them would obviously carry one I just think for that genre, cubone is a 'pokemon who holds an object' done right
then making them exclusively all wear the skulls of their mother makes no sense- which is what pokemon does. Why is cubone born with its mothers skull???? And what happens if the mother is a ditto? It makes no sense and is simply a poor gen 1 lore choice (like trainers with whips) that shouldve been retconned when they had the chance.
@@vicinte OK I'm going to have to admit that u are right here and u made valid points too. It is kinda strange that every cubones mother has deceased and I can't disagree with u that the lore to it is just poor writing from gamefreak. Gamefreak just wanted to give cubone a reason to wear the skulls or to sort of solve the mystery as to why they have the skulls but that explanation of it wearing the skull of its deceased mother has tons of loop holes to it.
@@Jaston49 when it comes to lots of weird lore things like this (especially those that come up in Pokedex entries, since there are numerous times that they are simply false), such as like some ghost Pokemon literally being dead people, or Cubone and it's skull, I headcanon that it's just a "myth" and in reality it's just like an exoskeleton.
@@vicinte yes I would also just like to believe that the skull is just an exoskeleton or maybe even a pattern (similar to skullcrawler from king kong) and I think you're right on the fact that you can't really look at the dex entries at a logical point of view (magcargo dex entry literally said its hotter than the sun) and I think it would be much more interesting (in my opinion) if maybe it was just an exoskeleton but when humans were trying to explain why it looks so much like a skull the myth of it wearing its deceased mother's skull became well know and popular
Zacian doesn’t always have the sword in its design and only carries it when you give it the Rusted Sword since it’s actually using it to fight. Also, I would say that other Pokémon that are known for holding objects likely have an instinct that makes them seek out those items since they seem to aid in their fighting capabilities in some way. Probably for simplicity sake, the games just have the Pokémon already have their signature objects when you catch/hatch/evolve them. Also also, there’s a lot more furbait Pokémon than you think…
In the Pay-off Pokémon group should also include Wimpod and Golisopod. Literally a Pokémon with WIMP on its name turning into a big and powerful Bug Samurai (only hindered by its ability)
The worst is definitely mythical. I hate mythical Pokemon so much. Permanently locked content is so lame. A permanently missable thing in a colleting-based game is such a bad idea. It is the primary reason I don't want to play older Pokemon games. What's the point when it's an incomplete experience?
For road block pokemon, you forgot the psyducks from diamond/pearl that block your way. You can't get past them until Cynthia gives you something for their headache.
Hoops, I have never related so hard. That #1 pick is my absolute favorite kind of Pokemon! As if I didn't already have a ton of respect for you, that pick just boosted it.
on the fur-bait group, you could've also added lopunny (for obvious reasons, despite not being a mascot for gen 4), also incineroar and salazzle from gen 7... you could even make a case for all 3 of the Alola starters' final forms to be fur-baity, heck, you could go as far as gen 6 and call fur-bait all the final forms for starters from that point onwards... that group can be as big as the fanart tells you it is =P
Loved the list, would also love to see other categories like, Eeveelutions, Semi-Psuedo Legendaries -Kingdra, Haxorus etc. Female only Pokémon, Salazzle, Nidoqueen Pokémon that merge with another, Slowbro, Mantine, Dragapult Pokémon that evolve with an item. Pokémon with unique evolution methods. Sirfetchd, Malamar Shedinja
Two new categories: Multi-head Pokemon: Dugtrio, Doduo, Dodrio, Weezing, Slowbro (Shellder on tail is separate head), Kangaskhan (mother and kid are one Pokemon), Vanilluxe and few more. Shell Pokemon, or Pokemon who can hide in itself body: Squirtle line, Omanyte line, Torkoal, Forretress, Shellder line, Shuckle, Dwebble line and few more.
I’ve never disagreed with a list as much as I do this one, but keep up the good work. I’ve never thought of this idea before and it was fun ranking these mons in a new way
I think some genres that could fit into this list would be: -Shiny Pokémon -Pokémon that are not what they seem (Pokémon like Mimikyu, galarian sunfisk, Amoongus and maybe even ditto, that hide their themselves or look/pretend to look like something else) -Separating the furrbait genre on this video into 2, being the furrybait pokemon (adding mons like Incineroar or Lopunny) , and the Mascot/commercialized Pokémon (adding Pikachu, Greninja etc.) -Pokémon with multiple evolution forms like eevee or Kirlia -Pokémon that should be one type but aren't (kinda like the dragon/not dragon thing, with Pokémon like Groundon being related to heat but not being part fire type or Florgeous being the garden Pokémon but not being grass) -Controversial Pokémon, Pokémon that have caused controversy one way or another like Porygon or Jynx (tho I'd understand If we didn't include this one bc it can be a controversial topic) - And lastly the "introduction/Professor" Pokémon, this having all the Pokémon that the professors of each region introduce you to when you start the game, like Juniper's Cinccino or Kukuis Rockruff
-dunno about shinies, since that category includes literally every mon lol -pokemon pretenders is a good category! voltorb/electrode, wishiwashi, and klefki would all also work here -definitely agree that "mascot" mons could be their own group. any of the mons in smash would work -split evos are a great group since they all each kind of have distinct personalities across their pairs (think slowbro vs slowking, or glalie vs froslass) -I really like that last category too, and you could even include other mons that are integral to the "intro" part of the story, like the zigzagoon that corners birch or the starly that attacks at lake verity
Really interesting list! Wondering why you didn't include some pokemon in the smaller genres you had, like at least two widely acknowledged furry bait pokemon (Delphox and Zeraora, maybe Lopunny) and at least one widely acknowledged payoff pokemon (Wimpod, maybe Larvesta and Beldum). Also wondering why you didn't include eeveelutions since it's one of the most widely acknowledged genres, but makes sense if it's because they're all a single evolution line. Cool concept for a video.
Too funny- until now I never put much thought into the genres, but now I'm thinking about more that weren't on this list: Household Pet Pokemon like Meowth Urban Pokemon like Muk, Trubbish Prey Pokemon like Magikarp, Caterpie, Basculin Vocational Pokemon like Growlithe and Chansey Culture based Pokemon like Ludicolo, Ninetales, and Mr. Rhyme Stone evolutions Battle based evolution Location based evolution Music based Pokemon like Chattot
I actually prefer Pichu over Pikachu. I just like it's design more. Also, I think you forgot one furbait pokemon, unless it was intentional. One pair of brown rabbits, please.
For roadblocking pokemon, the group is larger than just Snorlax, Sudowoodo, and Kecleon. In Gen 4 you have the psyduck blocking the road to Celestic town, in Gen 5 you have the Crustle Blocking Route 4 in B2W2, and even Gen 8 has Wooloo blocking part of Route 1 after you complete the Slumbering Weald initial quest.
Didn’t think about humanoid Pokémon, my first thought was Pokémon with clothing. Also feel if you’re going to have a “not a dragon” then we need a “not a pseudo legendary”. Mega Pokémon too maybe
@HoopsandHipHop you should do a video ranking the individual pokemon in each of those genres after and make a little mini series of it that would be awesome I would so watch that
Many people have been complaining about too many pseudo-legendary Pokemon being Dragon types, but I don’t mind it at all because dragons by themselves are very powerful creatures.
Gamefreak really missed out with not having Rillabooms drums be a part of its chest. I feel the same way with Zacians sword. It should have been a part of its anatomy, and be its tail or something.
Love the video, a lot of cool concepts here. Regarding road blocking Pokémon, I’m not sure psyduck should count since they weren’t designed as such and were used to block a route in a game 3 generations after their debut. However I would posit that Crustle count. They are used to block progress a couple times through the gen 5 games, particularly at the seaside cave.
For the food group, most of these Pokemon seem dessert based. Cherubi seems out of place in this group since it is a more natural object - something you would see in nature.
Furbait is a much bigger group, you forgot Lopunny. I'd also count Braixen, Salazzle, Incineroar, Cinderace and Zeraora as furbait too, there's a lot more probably
There's also the Psyduck in Gen 4 who block your path and Crustle in Gen 5, Gen 6 has Snorlax again and Gen 7 in a way has Tauros and Stoutland (including the people they're with), Gen 8 has Corviknight in one spot at least. They didn't stop doing these. If you only want to include the ones you yourself need to do something about then it's at least up to Gen 5 and 6, since the Tauros/ Stoutland/ Corviknight are more story forced blocks that go away on their own.
What about Pokémon that wear clothes like Machamp and Hitmonchan, or Pokémon made up of multiple separate creatures, like Falinks and Exeggcute? It’d be nice to have an F- tier, and both of these are great contenders for that tier 🤣👍
I think they're from another universe... so, sort of. I mean, everything is from space if you really think about it... but the Ultra Beasts I believe were from an alternate reality to our own. A real Multiverse of Madness, if you will
I'd consider psyduck from Sinnoh as a blocking pokemon. A group blocks off a route and like the others they require you to obtain an item to clear the path. Snorlax-pokeflute, sudowoodo- spray bottle, kecleon -devon scope, and psyduck-special medicine.
Toxtricity, a FUR bait ??? 😅 You forgot to count Lopunny, Baxien/Delphox, Lycanroc, Zeraora, and many more ! As for the Payoff Pokémon, you forgot Wimpod/Golisopod ! 🐌
I would throw split evolution Pokemon into the mix as a genre. Things like Bellosom/Vileplume, Poliwrath/Politoad, the Eeveelutions, etc. I always thought Pokemon that could evolve into different things depending on various conditions was a super cool conceptual space to play around in
Zacian is a legendary pokemon so that sorta cancels out the held item issue you mentioned at the start of the video putting both it and Zamazenta who also has a held item and is it's legendary counterpart right next to it wouldn't it?
I feel like wooloo should count as part of the road blocking Pokémon cause of the beginning of sword and shield as well as the psyduck in diamond and pearl
