This feels more like a special video you would make after getting to 100K subs and yet you give it to us as one of your normal weekly videos, keep at it bro, I love your opinions on JRPGs 👍

I rate this video an "S". Pure masterpiece here. All of us have played bits and pieces of many series, but you've touched at least a piece of over 80 rpg series. My hat is off to you, sir!!!

Suikoden V is my favorite in the series also, I hope they bring three four and five to steam next year.

Front Mission 3 has a special place in my heart. I've tried to get through the first Front Mission a number of times through fan translations and then on the DS but I've never finished it.

Vandal Hearts 2 is the most underrated game. Amazing story, great soundtrack, and the game system is actually good because you have to set up traps and pay attention to what you are doing or whose turn it is to play. Less accessible but good.

Let's talk about "adult/naughty" JRPGS since Utawarerumono was mentioned. Noteworthy are especially games by AliceSoft (v.e.:Rance,Evenicle), Eushully (Godslayer series) and TeamBaldrHead (BaldrForce and BaldrDive+second dive). Some hidden gems for sure.

Very interesting list! So sad (but understandable) to see King's Field at the very bottom xD My S tier would be: Star Ocean, Final Fantasy, Xeno(blade), King's Field, Dragon Quest. Other great series, but ones I don't consider S tier would be Tales of, Suikoden, Grandia, among others!

Great Video, Erick! I'm surprised by how much our lists would line up (there's several I'd bump up or down a rank, but really nothing more than that). The only series that comes to mind that you didn't cover are the Sword Art Online games. Not sure if they meet your criteria for JRPGS... but they're Japanese... and RPGS. I've played most of them, and while I like things about each, I think I'd put the series in the high end of the 'C' rank.

With the Lunar games, I like the Sega CD version of them because they are the original version of both games..

I love seeing peoples different tastes. I love knowing that everyones lists could all be different and is open to so much discussion and i love that this comment section isnt full of vitriol. Mainly it helps that this vid has lots of respect for differing opinions. What a great vid i love it!

Really cool and informative video, was surprised to see some lesser known series like Valhalla Knights on here. The one series I can think of that you missed would be the Genkai Tokki series, but given that you don't care about first person dungeon crawlers or waifu fanservice games, I can already tell it'd be a C or D for you.

Monster Rancher 2 is S tier for me....so many memories with that game back in the late 90's and early 00's. Monster Rancher had the CD mechanic where you could get a different monster with every cd that you scanned. I miss Lunar....finally playing Lunar 2 on the PS1...its amazing.

Great video, dragon ball Z also had a trilogy called “Goku’s legacy” an action RPG for game boy advance released here in the west…and a fan translated rpg on the snes. Also front mission 5 was fan translated to English for ps2 its really good and connects to the same time period as front mission 4…really good you should check it out Great channel, thanks for introducing us to some great series

The other 7th dragon games have translations! The DS one also has a small patch I'd recommend to make 2 pretty bad factors much more tolerable

Really great tier list.

Wild Arms XF is the best SRPG since FFT. Really tries to experiment with other objectives than "Kill all enemies", which doesn't always work but it was very appreciated. It has some challenging maps but it's not that difficult, and the system isn't convoluted either and really lets you be flexible and creative with character builds. I would say the weakness is the PCs outside of Clarissa, Labrynthia, and Alexia aren't very interesting. But it's made up for by a fun villain cast. Plus it has a top tier soundtrack.

Huge respect for giving Valkyria Chronicles on S tier. I love that series and VC3 is my favorite.

We have front mission 5 in ps2, but unfortunately japan only. However, we have a great fan translation! It is so great, and I recommend you play it. Worth your time! I also kinda sad you don't cover any jade cocoon in your videos. I absolutely love Jade Cocoon 2 and I kinda feel I am alone in it. :(

Honestly, if you played the Newer Mercenaries games, you might bump it up to a B or even A. The stories actually get a lot better after the 3rd game. The UI and overall detail jumps heavily with each title in the latest 3. The most recent game is on par with 3 houses and Triangle Strategy, atleast as far as gameplay goes, and the story isn't too far off either. And with the last 3 games, the character portraits are absolutely GORGEOUS. The artist is a legend. I love the Merc games. Only series besides Yakuza where I've played each and every title.

I Love the fact that you don't like dungeon crawlers in first person buy you love Megaten games. Grate video Eric loved it!! If you like dark games you should play Mother 3, that game is way darker than it seems and is an awesome game.

I think the CHRONO series biggest problem is that every other game in the series has to follow up CHRONO Trigger. CHRONO Trigger as a stand alone game is one of few games that I consider to be flawless. Damn near perfect. And while CHRONO Cross is great it can’t compare to how important CHRONO Trigger is to gaming as a whole.

I think it would have been better to split this video in parts because RU-vid, but, great list!!

Langrisser 4 (PS1) has had an excellent English translation since the early 2010s. Thanks to Mednafen and Duckstation, PS1 emulation, which had already been decent since the 2000s, has become extremely good in the past 3 years, so now's the perfect time to play it. I'm currently using Mednafen because I already had it installed on my PC to play some Saturn and PC Engine games, but I've also played RPGs on on my phone using Duckstation, and both have served me well :)

Also you’re a man after my own heart. I fuckin adore Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei. I think SMT V has the best turn based combat system I’ve played in years, it’s so mechanically well made

Would the Dark Cloud (maybe known as Dark Chronicle, too) duology count? I’ve only played the first of the games for the PS2, and it was such an incredible experience. It was the first game to surprise me with a continuation after I cleared the first dungeon! The younger me was already content with just one dungeon, but man was I stoked when I played it and found like 6 more. Edit: Watched the whole video. I enjoyed White Knight Chronicles as well! By the time I felt comfortable enough to do the Online Quests, though, there was essentially no community. Level 5, the company, made that series and Dark Cloud/Chronicle. There are references to the older game in White Knight Chronicles, like Osmond.

Would have liked to hear your opinions on Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, and Granstream Saga. While not technically a series, they're all from the same developer with strong themes that tie them together.

Awesome video Erick. I'm actually with you against the grain saying that Ni No Kuni 2 was better than 1. I played them in reverse order so I guess that has something to do with my experience, but the mechanics of the 1st just frustrated me to no end.

I can confirm, playing Fossil Fighters for the first time as a kid was just AMAZING. Wouldn't of been the same if I had tried it a year or two later, I'm sure

Honestly kinda close to what I'd rank them as tbh...granted Dragon Quest should be S and Persona's a bit more in between A and S for me but that'd be about it...Star Ocean should probably be B to A tier though with more leaning towards B and FF should be plain B tier at this point given how many misses in a row they released or how even with VIIR being a good game imo it's still one I'd rank no higher than a B due to them splitting up the games to the degree they have (even if it needed to be split up they could've gotten much further in the story than just Midgard...hell I'd say the fight in between Continent 1 and 2 would've been the best stopping point for a part 1...with how they split it now and how much story is left we could potentially get about 5 parts or more if each dungeon is as drawn out as say Hojo's lab or the Train Graveyard was in part 1). Souls also feels very low even for a personal opinion focused tier list tbh and as for Monster Hunter and maybe God Eater...I consider them in a separate genre at this point tbh (Hunting Genre even if the amount of series in it is very condensed). As for the series that would be on the top 5 for me it'd be (from my favorite to least favorite): -1st. Tales -2nd. Trails -3rd. Valkyria Chronicles -4th. Ys -5th. Dragon Quest

Funny thing: Sakura Wars So Long My Love and especially Shin Sakura Wars is considered worst games in series from fanbase in Japan. The best one (SW 1, SW 2, SW 3, PS2 remake of SW1) are still not localized .... And there is one mistake in this video - Sakura Wars games was never released on PSX, because those games were ,,system sellers'' on Sega Saturn / Dreamcast in Japan.

Asdivine, Sword Art Online, Mary Skelter and Deception are missing, off the top of my head, to make this list even more complete :)
