There’s a toad in color splash that says “Mario, sir! I’m a huge fan! Thanks for taking the time to talk to a normal toad like me with no unique traits or discernable characteristics!”
Origami King is what happens when a game decides to just be itself rather than be a successor of a much better game. It doesn’t have to be TTYD to be good. It just did its thing, and succeeded in almost every way.
I couldn't agree more, and I'm really glad that so many people have given it a chance! Seeing the general opinion quickly warm on Origami King as people got to, y'know, play the game has been a weirdly warming sight, considering that usually in gaming positivity doesn't get the chance to grow and bloom past negativity.
Even if it's a good game, I don't want to support it because of the new restrictions. If a game like OK was made and had the freedom to use different designs and characters besides toad, id be interested. I just can't do this again after getting burned by SS and CS. It feels to me like they decided to triple down on the bad choices. I also love Super, so I'm not just one if those people who wants it to stay exactly the way it was.
You got good taste my friend. I didn’t find it to be a successor to neither TTYD or Color Splash/Sticker Star, but I found it to be a unique and original game, and something great.
It’s a new era of paper Mario, we went through the classic era, to the platformer era, to the limited era, to the origami era, hope the next game either uses a system like this but better, or just goes back to the classic era, we don’t really want to have games in the limited or platforming era again, because this is not exactly the paper Mario most people love.
Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I did! As I said in the video, give it a little bit to start cooking is all. It took me probably 3 or so hours to really start feeling the story, and the gameplay was fun but not super memorable for me before that point.
I always liked thousand year door in the train sequence where it takes an almost murder on the orient express vibe with the whole bomb plot. But with thousand year door it is like you are stepping into a different game with each chapter
Never expected for Super Paper Mario to be so high, BUT I AM HAPPY IT IS! Also, I respect your honesty with Origami King. I also love the game. This whole video is of a quality and well thought out. Makes you see all the games in a healthy light, seeing what works well and what doesn't in each game.
I'm glad that the video succeeded in that goal! With how much negativity surrounds the series online nowadays, I really did just want to explore every game from a less blood-red lens (or rosy, in the case of the first two games!), giving each game the best chance at highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. Super is a perfect example of that - it's got an incredibly slow start but when it hits that watershed point, you're just not stopping. I fear that many people never got to that point, though, and that reflects even in my original concerns about the game before I'd played it!
The Golden Bolt that kinda falls apart when you were talking about sticker star, it being the only game you couldn’t finish, so I guess for that you still kinda had your blood-red lenses on a little bit, nothing wrong with that though, since everybody deserves to have their own opinion.
I mean, he didnt exactly miss much, if you ask me. Even if it had a spectacular ending, it isnt enough to entice most players to continue playing a mostly bland, boring game.
Wish the internet worked that way, never did and probably never will, since some psychology thing called the audience effect, where people show their true nature when hiding in something where people can’t identify who they are, I don’t know the logistics or something behind it, I barely know psychology stuff.
I don't understand why this video is doing so badly since its honestly a pretty fair ranking even if I do disagree at parts, anyway I hope this comment becomes outdated
If it's any help, it's actually performing pretty well relative to my other recent videos (at the time I'm commenting)! Sometimes it can take a bit to really get rolling, especially with longer videos - my Bloodstained video took off pretty much overnight, whereas my hour-long Legend of Dragoon video was my _worst_ performing video for about a week and a half. Now LoD is my top video of all time, and my first video to hit about 200k views in the span of 30 days!
Jump On Everything its doing bad because because it’s basically what everyone expected Sticker Stars last color splash is next then is followed by origami King the next to are random and the Thousand-Year doors is first. Not to say it's a bad video. Its great
At least your excepting of this, unlike other people, who just go through an outrage in the comments. These guys sometimes plays 1 or 2 games in the series and get mad when the only games they play don’t make it up as high as they wanted it too. I only played to of the games, and due to what others say of the games (and watching people play them).
Well there is one thing good I can say about Sticker Star. I promise that good comments will end here. I liked that Wiggler was an ally like I feel he should be with his friendly, cute, and pleasant appearance more often.
@Joel Johnson i like the idea but color splash does it way better and the only thing I liked about sticker star was the ice boss and the bowser boss and the toads they were hilarious
@@TheCoolNintendoGuy8593 I love to imagine that King Boo is a Christian at heart, and his pfp is him knocking on Luigi's door and saying "Excuse me sir, Do you have time to talk about freedom and our lord and savior Jesus Christ?"
The Golden Bolt what I especially like about your videos is that you express your own opinion and don’t give in to lying about your feelings only so that you can sound like others or state a more popular opinion that I don’t even have. I better learn a thing or two from you because I often fall into the trap of saying what people prefer for me to hear than being honest. Although I think my comment stating my opinion on Origami King at least got me headed that direction.
Personally I tie TTYD and SPM at 1st. One had the best gameplay (TTYD), the other has the best story (SPM). Not to diss TTYD’s story, but SPM blows it out of the park.
No, bringing compagnons back will make new games boring and the same as past games. Ending games with compagnons will bring an emotional, esthetic and memorable value to these games you will never forget, and in my opinion need to stay like that.. but I can accept everyone has their own opinion
Derek van der Veen not necessarily, because look back at Starlow from the Mario & Luigi games. She may not be a robust character, but she still had her good moments during Bowser's Inside Story and Dream Team. Plus, if Nintendo could in some way incorporate Olivia for the next Paper Mario game, there will definitely be another game with her in it then. It just depends on the story.
John B aka Smooth Chocolate I can see ur opinion but I like a new refreshing story with new characters and compagnons more, getting stuck to the same idea will be boring. Also, this was a great ending with the story with Olivia.
I only just completed the thousand year door for the first time, can confirm it definitely lives up to the height. One of my favorite games of all time
While the idea of a fully Zelda styled PM game sounds interesting, I would still rather have a game that combines the greatness of the two formulas into one. Having the world design and writing from Origami King, and having the characters, mechanics, and stories from the older games would make, in my opinion, a fantastic PM game.
I don't even know how many times I've replayed Paper Mario TTYD, it's just great. Sadly it was the one I started with for the series, so everything else has felt like a downgrade to me. I have Origami King but have yet to start it, but I'm glad to see it's not another sticker star.
I can only imagine! That's part of what makes me glad I took so long to finally play it in full, I've had a copy for years but I just kept putting it off. Thanks to that, I feel like I got to experience the best of both worlds, as the rare person that enjoys Color Splash, the classic games, Super, and now Origami King! Had I played TTYD far sooner I feel like I'd never have given CS a fair shake. I know this is another sort of hot take, but after they straight-up nailed it with TTYD on almost every level, I'm actually kind of glad they decided to shift styles with Super. A traditional(ish) JRPG combat structure could only go so far in the mid-2000s, and they came very close to perfecting it, so continuing down that path likely wouldn't have beared as much fruit the third time around. Even if we'd gotten a TTYD 2 of sorts, I still think the first would've outclassed it, and I'd guess that something like Sticker Star would've been _more_ inevitable based on Miyamoto's comments about the SS demo "looking too much like the GameCube one." Essentially, we got an experimental franchise one game sooner rather than later, and it led to (in my opinion) the best classic-styled Zelda currently on the Switch in Origami King. And I'm cool with that!
@@TheGoldenBolt I feel like these ranking of the Paper Mario games have become so predictable that I don't even have to watch them anymore. I think they're made solely to put Sticker Star in last place and TTYD at #1
Roby Mammon not for me ttyd was one of the absolute worst in the entire seories i love paper mario sticker star and especially origomi king it was a nice change that needed to be done it would have just gotten boring if it was just ttyd 2 if Anything i prefer Everything about the newer games over the older ones the generic characters are way better than the original ones and the puzzle battle system is a great change to an already good battle system sry it’s just my opinion

My Ranking 6) Paper Mario Sticker Star 5) Paper Mario Colour Splash 4) Paper Mario: The Origami King 3) Super Paper Mario 2) Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door 1) Paper Mario 64
My top: -6 Sticker Star -5 Color Splash -4 Origami King -3 Super Paper Mario -2 Paper Mario 64 (my personal favorite) -1 The Thousand-year Door I'm glad you enjoyed those games Pal, no matter what your favorite is :3
@@cool-dx3df PM64 was my first approach to the series, I have finished it like 6 times and I never get tired of it. I enjoy playing this game more than TTYD. Thousand-year door, improves everything that was the PM64, things like character design, new and fun mechanics, art style and best of all, a much better story (In my opinion, this is what a makes a true paper mario game). It´s objectively a better game than PM64 and the vast majority of fans agree that this is the best game in the franchise. Regardless of my opinion, a favorite game does not make it the best. Thanks for asking Buddy :3
Awesome video man! As someone who also has Origami King and Super in my top 3, I agree with most of your points! As for the vellumental bosses, the only one I would argue is pretty bad is the fire one. I actually found ice and water to be particularly well designed in terms of mixing up how you approach the ring system/using abilities defensively, etc. Kingk did a pretty good breakdown about 2 days ago!
That's interesting, Fire was probably the one I was most okay with beyond Earth of course. Water was probably the most annoying for me personally, thanks to the game more or less forcing you (or at least me, based on the way the game placed the 1000 Fold space) to choose between defending against its super attack and dealing massive damage the next turn. Fire was probably the easiest of the bunch for me!
Well, putting Origami King in third place certainly demonstrates something that I can’t stress enough. I can’t stress enough that more people should give this game a chance as it is superior to Sticker Star and Color Splash. Based on what I saw on Let’s Plays, I agree with lots of opinions on those two.
Tbh, Color Splash is my favorite game. The jokes are funny, the graphics are beautiful, the music is gorgeous, Huey is one of the best partners in my opinion.
What I like about origami king is that they keep damage numbers relatively low. You never deal 9 999 damage per hit against a boss that has 999 999 999 999 health. Which something that has become a pet peeve of mine. Just look at the damage numbers in borderlanda 2, and really think about how much of a difference to the game it makes if you remove four zeros from the damage number.
I kind of disagree with the notion that Origami King is “TTYD if it was made today with Nintendo’s restrictions.” The games differ quite a bit in terms of design philosophy and general feel. The restrictions only had to do with unique character design; the battle system and adventure/Zelda like gameplay was all due to Intelligent Systems. To me Origami King feels less like “Let’s try to emulate TTYD to the best we can without stepping over Nintendo’s lines” and more like “Let’s make something new and fresh with the series, taking elements from all of the games and putting our new ideas in” But other than that, great video.
What my buddy meant (or at least what I mean when co-opting that phrase from him!) is more-so about vibe. TTYD has a very specific energy to it that has not once been replicated in the series, and while Origami King goes for its own energy, it sort of looped back around into feeling like one of those games where the team really did have _fun_ making it. They're certainly different games from a design philosophy as you said!
The Golden Bolt Ah, that makes more sense. Both games do feel like the devs put a lot of effort and passion into it, even if said effort and passion was directed into different areas. I’m hoping this game sells well because it really deserves it (and because it may give Nintendo a reason to hand Intelligent Systems a bit more freedom).
Actually, the gameplay elements also have to do with Nintendo, and specifically Miyamoto. Nobody talks about how all the changes Paper Mario has had are due to Miyamoto wanting the changes as had been revealed in many an interview, including the combat. Miyamoto believed the RPG elements were too complicated and wanted something more simple, but also innovative, so IS began experimenting and here we are today.
The first two Paper Mario games are among my favorite childhood experiences of all time, ESPECIALLY TTYD. The original was my very first RPG that taught me many new concepts I've never seen in a game at the time, and was a very fun adventure. TTYD was even better in just about every way, and it's still one of my favorite games, an unforgettable experience. Super Paper Mario was alright. I wouldn't put it above the first though. I've never played any of the games after Super, but I want to give Origami King a shot some day.
Personally I preferred 64 to ttyd, I only played them both for the first time back to back and 64 seemed a lot more consistent in quality compared to ttyd and while sure ttyd has some really cool moments it also has a lot of the most annoying things in the series such as a ton of back tracking and some frustrating game design such as the big tree in chapter 2. Still a great game though, my paper mario opinions are pretty controversial anyway.
Honestly glad your not scared to share your opinions, not many people would take kind to this opinion because “everybody who doesn’t think the same I do is dumb and idiotic.” While I may have never played either of them, they both seem like pretty good games, and honestly are tied with origami king, a game that I played out of 2 ( the other was color splash). Keep in note, 2 games I don’t play are tied with a game I did play. Don’t really ever see that.
12:10 again, there is an option to use buttons instead of the touch screen. People pretend the touch screen is mandatory. It is, but only for the first tutorial fight.
I've been mulling it over since I bought it, but I gotta say: I might just put Origami King over TTYD. Sure, TTYD is the best _RPG_ I've ever played... But I think Origami King is the best Action-Adventure Puzzle RPG I'll ever play. So much heart and soul was poured into every nook and cranny of this game. The writing, the visuals, the gameplay loop, the characters (*even with the limitations put onto them*), the humor, the ideas and levels and even the story... It's actually as close to a masterpiece as I've seen a game be. And now I'm sad I've beaten it. I wanna experience it all over again, like I've forgotten what was in store for me. Alas. Also, Bobby is tied for #1 in terms of partners for me now. Scooch over, Vivian, I'm sad for a suicide bomber-
This video was extremely well made, and I can tell just how much effort you put into it, nice job! Also, I'mma be honest and say that I enjoyed my time with Sticker Star, even if it was the second Paper Mario game I played (the first being Super Paper Mario).
Well first off, thank you! I'm glad to hear that it was worth the effort. As for Sticker Star, I didn't hate it at first, so I definitely can see where somebody else would start to vibe with it. It's around Chapter 4 that I just crashed, _hard._ Outside of this video's prep I've never gone back, it's just about the only game I can recall that I had/have absolutely no interest in ever touching again!
@@TheGoldenBolt That's a fair point, as I must admit that I, neither, have played the game a second time. Although, I'm not usually one to replay a game in the first place, but the first runthrough was enjoyable, if not a bit cryptic in some parts.
My Ranking: 2: Sticker Star 1: Origami King I haven’t played any others :( I do intend to play super though, I have the game, I just never got around to it.
I want a petition to bring all characters back!!! may it be Goombella, Bombette, Bobby, Olivia, Admiral Bobbery, Goombario, Tippi, or others, I. WANT. THEM. BACK!!!!!
Well that solves one of my childhood mysteries. I remember going to Walmart asking for a paper Mario demo thinking it would be a cartridge. The employees had no idea what I was talking about lol
Super Paper Mario was the first one I have played of the six. I had some decent fun, but I didn't play all the way through. But now I'm eager to try Thousand Year Door!
Super I'd say has the slowest pace of the entire series, Sticker Star notwithstanding, but once it really starts to hit around Chapter 4 or so, it's hard to put it down. TTYD, though, that game starts out running and never stops, you're in for a total gem of a game when you get around to it!
I was TORN when to watch this video. There was a PAGE of videos I had to catch up on notifications but FOLDED and saved the best till last. Ok no more puns lol.
This guy totally gets it and provides a fresh perspective to the series. I really enjoyed the first 3 Paper Mario games. They were my past favourite RPGs, alongside the Mario & Luigi series. I went from non-RPG fan to absolute Mario RPG fan. It was the story, design, details and the "charm" that made me so keen to complete them, again and again. Super PM was excellent in its own right, and was unique but excelled at what it tried to achieve. So you can imagine my disappointment for Sticker Star and Color Splash. It didn't feel like Paper Mario anymore. The stories were stripped down, character designs were restricted, and the RPG elements were replaced with Stickers and Cards which just weren't engaging. The games were decent in some respects, but the pointless battles and Thing mechanics were too frustrating. When Origami King came out, I expected it to be bad compared to the first 3. However I realise that it's trying to be different. It isn't another Sticker Star or TTYD, it's something completely unique, a fusion of Zelda-like adventure and puzzle combat, and surprisingly enjoyable, even with the lack of RPG elements. After playing TOK I realise that there's potential for modern, adventure Paper Mario to be really great. I miss the RPG direction Nintendo used to have, and I'm wishing Nintendo did release another old-school Paper Mario. But I'm ready to accept that a full-action-adventure Paper Mario would be cool.
I don't want be be sad anymore that I haven't got a TTYD 2. I can just play that game again for the gameplay. I now want to look forward to the new age of Paper Mario. I liked Origami King and if it had more unique characters and a unique story, I could overlook the thinner RPG elements and place it up with TTYD.
I completely agree with this list (except for TTYD and SPM being swapped due to me being a sucker for story). It’s insane how much I related to the points that you made for all of the games. This is an amazing list my guy! Very good!
You touch on a point crucial about Color Splash: Not a lot of people even played the game, most complain about a game they never played. And i would say that's 90% the case for everything else besides TTYD and PM, people complaining about stuff they didn't played, just repeating what everyone is whining.
I was so happy to hear someone talk about The Origami King so positively. You absolutely took the words out of my mouth with this video. Best analysis I've ever seen of these games, even though I have a slightly different ranking.
In regards to Origami Kings boss fights, I disagree heavily. I think the boss fights were the best parts of the game by far, but other than that I agree.
And I wanna note again that ranking it as a slightly less "essential" game certainly takes nothing away from the game's quality, as I've said it's a very special game to me!
Here’s my list of best to worst paper Mario games 1# Sticker Star 2# Origami King 3# super paper Mario 4# color splash 5# thousand year door 6# paper Mario
Hot take, Dimentio is a top 5 Mario character out of any game Also this video is amazing, just judging by the video I would assume you’d have over a million subs
I made a comment in a reply but in case that gets buried I just wanted to say I really appreciate this video, especially as someone who loves both TTYD and TOK (and thinks Bug Fables is better than both of them due to better replay value, mind-blowing lore once you start piecing together what’s really going on, and some much needed QoL improvements TTYD could have really used :p). Awesome content man, and love the name. Ya got yourself a new sub.
That's really part of why I started this project, like I said at the end - the discourse has become so salty that it just fuels itself to hate whatever is coming before we can get a proper chance to try it. I was excited to play Origami King, for better or worse (thankfully better!), and it just made sense to try and share some sort of positive discussion about every game in the series. Y'know, except Sticker Star...yeeeeah, sorry I've got nothing on that one lol
I like how Scott Falco put it, in that the first 2 games are Mario Story games (like the Japanese title) and the recent 3 are Paper Mario games. The first 2 were paper MARIO games, and the last 3 are PAPER mario games.
I'm so happy to see Origami King and Super Paper Mario so high. They're such fantastic adventure games that I personally don't care at all that they aren't really RPGs.
Origami King is so underrated. I agree with you, the first 2-3 hours are meh. After that, pure greatness. However, I found the bosses to be highlights. They are awesome.
I don't really like CS's writing. i think it's trying to be tongue and cheek like say the Simpsons in the earlier years but it's just coming off like modern family guy where we just do the same thing and spell it out like that's the funny part. The writing chock full of jokes that are just "Man isn't this predictable/dumb" but they don't subvert it in the end. Like both CS and TTYD make a "Peach got kidnapped...again" joke but in TTYD it's peach telling her self "Ok what is wrong with me how does this happen every time?!" where in CS they go "*oh no who could have see that one coming wink*" and it just comes as the writers trying to force praise for being self aware with their tropes but refusing to mix it up because spelling out the problem and raising your eyebrows a couple times is easier than just changing it.
I should clarify that the writing shines to me outside of the main plot, because you're pretty spot-on about how run-of-the-mill the story writing is. That's part of the issue I dove more into before I cut down the Color Splash section a bit: It's a fun game that forgets (or wants you to forget) what its actual goal is. Just about every other game reminds you implicitly what you're grabbing these Stars (or cutting ribbon) for, but Color Splash really just...doesn't. The jokes outside of the main plot though, I'd stand up to defend for their humor. Origami King outclassed even those in every way though, so I won't defend it too too much, but I'd take CS's one-off jokes over Super's mid-2007 attempted pre-meme ones any day!
ill forever hate that spm is what made miyamoto swear off complex plots and unique characters and lands in paper mario. just cause it ""didnt sell well"" he blamed the story and stuff. ...... what? the story was the best part of the game??? it just didnt do as well as they wanted cause it was so different to tyyd despite its marketing implying it as a sequel. im glad spm is seeing the light of day these days cause it was my favorite game ever for a good year or two.
Dude literally same. I’ve been doing research on that and a LOT of the games from the 2000s era with amazing stories made Nintendo dial back. Pokémon Black 2 and SPM are two of my favorite games ever considering how extensive and unique their worlds are, and how incredible their stories are. But after both being released, they received backlash for them being “too innovative” and deviating from what’s normal, which Nintendo then took to heart and dialed back ALL story elements and unique personality in games. X and Y had such a bland story after B2W2 because B2W2 received so much backlash for not being “classic Pokémon”, same as SPM. Personally I like how SPM doesn’t have regular RPG style battles, because RPG battles get boring in my opinion and can feel quite constrictive compared to the free form battle style of being able to battle whatever enemies you want whenever you want in SPM. Classic fans of the original paper Mario and TTYD hated that the RPG battling was removed and they despise the unique characters considering how far they stray from the regular style of mushroom kingdom characters, when, that story and those fantastic characters are what made SPM my favorite paper Mario game of all time. I honestly think the 2000s were the golden era of Nintendo video games because that’s when their creativity peaked. Since then, their style has been dialed back so much and kept too sanitized to the point new games are boring.
My personal list: 6.SS 5. CS -huge gap- 4. TOK 3. PM64 2. TTYD 1. SPM Yeah, my favorite entry is Super, but the top 2 are way closer than the others, also being my top 2 games of all time. Super gets a slight edge because I think it has a slightly better overall story and its villains are unmatched. Plus i love its focus on totally bizarre, weird and new worlds that never felt limited by its existence in the Mario universe (which is far and away my biggest complaint about Sticker Star, Color Splash and to a lesser extent Origami King). But TTYD is easily the best in terms of gameplay, partners and individual chapter stories, and it also had the aesthetic I wish the series had kept after Super (which made sense that it was more stylized). I really wish Mario could see characters like Vivian and Bobbery again...
Love how you included the large gap in between TOK and CS as most people just think of it as a good improvement from the game and comparable to it which in my opinion is false.
Nocomment on the thing that makes origami king a nightmare. You don't have any control at all over your partners and your partners for some reason decide to not fight with you in the boss battles. If that's not called bad game design I don't know what is.
When I was 4 years old, we got a wii, and the fifth mario game I've ever played was Super Paper Mario. There was one thing you forgot to mention in this list. It was that the game didn't fear adding in quite creepy and weird things. (Same can be said for Thousand Year Door) for example: *River Twygs Bed* *Mimi's spider transform animation* *when the game turned into a dating sim for a bit* *The world literally ending* This along with all the amazing characters really adds personality to them. The dialog for them also is 10/10. Each character is unique, and we literally only see 1 toad in the entire game, everyone else being their own character. For me, this mixed with the nostalgia from 10 years ago, makes it the best Mario game I've ever played in my life.
This is my list of my favorite Paper Mario games from least favourite to favorite. 6: Super Paper Mario 5: Paper Mario (the original one) 4: Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door 3: Paper Mario the Origami King 2: Paper Mario Sticker Star 1: Paper Mario Color Splash
What's the problem with the community is that they will go out of their way to harass anyone who likes Sticker Star or Color Splash. Sure, I don't like the games, but I don't yell at everyone who likes it. People can like whatever they want, but it isn't ok to harass them on every corner.
It's sad that people think that the only reason TTYD is my favorite is because of "nastalgia". Then when I try to explain myself they call me toxic. There has been a very unfair stereotype put on classic fans. Please be reasonable and try to understand us before you continue to call us toxic. Come up with a reasonable argument as well before using a pointless one like "it's because nastalgia". Oh and btw, I didn't grow up with TTYD. Therefore it proves it isn't nastalgia I like the game for more reasons.
Having TTYD as favorite=Nostalgia blind Having TOK as favorite=child who hasnt played the old ones. That is how people think and I dont know what to say about that without being straight offensiv.
I don't really get how people enjoy Super Paper Mario as much as they do. Not saying it's bad by any means, I get the story part is great too but man a lot of its gameplay is just so painful to me. Not trying to start any wars but just genuinely curious about this lol
38:16 Did somebody say Super Paper Mario 2? Weeeeeeeeeeell, I just happen to be making a Super Paper Mario 2. It's a game, but will play out on the video like a movie. It will demonstrate a hybrid battle system, new characters, old characters, what I hope will be good story, and a cast of small-name RU-vidrs doing voice acting, including me! It'll be something of a "dream project" for me, as SPM is my favourite game of all time and Sticker Star was wildly disappointing in comparison. Just felt like mentioning it. If anyone is interested in a role in said dream sequel, here's where to find more info! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LzQUI36bEG4.html
My favorite paper Mario memory is taping my GameCube controller down so that I could grind for rubees in super paper Mario, because I was little and thought I really needed 1,000,000. Love that they included a separate path for that
It’s sad to hear that you want them to go full into action adventure and not go full into rpg, as the paper thing is just an aesthetic and we already get mario adventure games outside of the paper series.
I have to say, Paper Mario TTYD is my most favorite. Treasure hunting has always been exciting, but the only flaw is not putting a museum in it. Nintendo should’ve had it displayed exhibits for badges, enemy entries, cooking recipes, and a few other stuff. Fortunately that’s where the journal came in. I know The Origami King has a museum which made treasure hunting lots of fun, but TTYD tops it off in my opinion.
Super paper Mario is the only one from this series I’ve ever played and I enjoyed it a lot as a kid but I had no pervious knowledge of how the game was before
You wouldn't believe just how glad I am that there are more Olivia fans than I first expected. Tons of people think that Olivia is just ripoff Navi, but I say that there is one key difference between Navi and Olivia: Olivia has a real personality. Navi has no personality at all and is just used as a tutorial. Olivia teaches you the ideas of battle for your first maybe 5 or so battles, and while you might understand the battle mechanics from the first battle or just from trailers, it's not too many battles, and after that, if you want a hint from Olivia, she'll only ever butt in at the start of a boss fight and you have to ask for a hint any other time. She's a better form of Navi, and with just how cute she is, she makes for an incredible partner.
Cayden Reed Not really. Sure, there are a few toxic TTYD fans, I’ve met someone who told me to kill myself for liking Color Splash, but most of them are normal, reasonable people. They give good points as to why they like the first few Paper Mario games and dislike the ladder few Paper Mario games.
Cayden Reed I can sorta see what you mean. However, not playing a game because there are a few toxic fans in the game’s community is just dumb. Why do you think this game is praised so much? Because a lot of people like it. Simple as that. There isn’t much more meaning to it, people like the game because it’s fun to them.
I do not get why the paper Mario team doesn't use more established Mario characters instead of relying on Bowser, Bowser's minions, Mario, so much toad, peach(for a finale), Luigi and a Birdo Easter egg. Mario has many more characters to pull from native to the mushroom kingdom use them.
This will be a controversial ranking for sure. I can understand if you disagree with me. I love every game in the series so don’t take this as me saying any of the games are bad, it’s just my personal ranking. 6- Super Paper Mario 5- Paper Mario: Sticker Star 4- Paper Mario 3- Paper Mario: Colour Splash 2- Paper Mario: The Origami King 1- Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
44:30 Man, when I heard this line I suddenly became so scared about all the "You should play Bug Fables" crowd in the comments. But I was being silly. Those types of people don't actually watch videos all the way through. They just go onto review videos and tell the reviewer that they're wrong for liking the Origami King.
I'd say that I addressed that by saying I wasn't talking about Bug Fables at the start, but you're right: Any of those commenters would've missed that part either when they skipped to the end or to Origami King's spot to make sure they had fuel to complain about! I love it here
Some Random Nerd To be fair Bug Fables is pretty freaking good. Not better than TTYD but still is a great game. I’m not going to say if it’s better than Oragami King or not because I haven’t actually played that yet, but this video makes really want to give it a try.
I personally thing Bug Fables is better than TTYD as I think it has significantly more replay value but god damn TTYD, TOK and Bug Fables are all incredible games and definitely would recommend all three of them. A lot of people I’ve seen talking about Bug Fables are just spreading the word about it on their platforms and I feel like they always get backlash as well, getting a ton of “TTYD is better, game sucks, doesn’t have Mario” responses to what was just supposed to be a post celebrating Moonsprout’s achievement. As someone who is part of the “You should play Bug Fables” crowd, a lot of us loved the game and still loved Paper Mario: TOK. I really hope that this game’s reputation isn’t going to be tainted by people attacking the incredible work of talented video artists on RU-vid. This is in the same vain that I hope people aren’t trashing on TTYD or TOK because they don’t like each other’s preferred Paper Mario style. Subbed by the way, awesome video.
As much a I like The Thousand Year Door, in no way, shape, or form did it make Paper Mario 64 obsolete. The battle system is better, writing is better, story is more interesting, and partners have more personality, I get all of that. However, so many TTYD fans ignore the game's flaws. The level design is no where near as good as the first. Not only are the areas more linear with more of a hallway design but there is way too much backtracking especially in Chapter 4 which is some of the worst backtracking I've ever seen in any video game. TTYD doesn't have any locations nearly as open as Dry Dry Desert or Jade Jungle and PM64 doesn't really suffer from pacing issues outside of Chapter 6 (Flower Fields sucks). The Peach segments in PM64 were also a lot better. Being able to roam her castle in the dark while avoiding detection, answers questions from Bowser (which actually affect Chapter 5), baking a delicious cake for an enemy, participating in a game show, and disguising herself as an enemy really gave Peach some identity aside from being an typical damsel in distress. Her segments in TTYD are nowhere near as good and I didn't care much for TEC's weird obsession with her. The SMB Bowser segments are pretty cool, but are too short. Despite the improvements made from TTYD I actually consider PM64 to be the better game.
The next paper Mario could be a knock out of the park whether or not it returns to it's rpg roots or a full adventure game like Super PM if they just lift their damn self imposed restrictions when it comes to writing and world building. The amount of times Origami King seemed like it desperately wanted to move away from that
I know this is a controversial opinion, but I feel as if Shigero Miyamoto is bringing down Mario. When he’s not as involved, they have more room for original concepts. For example, Mario Odyssey. The (in my opinion) best Mario game ever. He wasn’t involved in that game hardly at all. Look how it turned out. He’s kinda too stuck in the past. He doesn’t want to evolve the Mario franchise. But I digress, I just feel as though he should be a little more lenient.
