Maybe talk about the behind the scenes personnel changes. I remember that most series remaining in this top 8 had a significant impact on the direction of the organization in each off season. The revolving door of coaches. Semin’s departure. McPhee trading Forsberg out of desperation to make the Caps “built for the playoffs” (one of the dumbest, most overused narratives is that a team isn’t built for the playoffs imo), then McPhee getting replaced by Bmac. Maybe can talk about the weight of Ovechkin’s 13 year contract as each subsequent series added to the mud being slung at him in spite of his often heroic playoff showings. But I found this video to be extremely well-done and enjoyable as-is, so take all this with a grain of salt, I was just spit-balling.

As a Leafs fan, this is one of the most relatable videos on RU-vid. Except for the winning playoff series part. We only do that once every 20 years. I'm also interested in where the Capitals vs Leafs series lands. That unlike many series, had MANY overtime goals.

It did cross my mind! I would have to be extra vigilant in my research though since it's going through the history of a fanbase that I'm not a part of, and thus I'd need to make sure I get all the necessary context for everything.

Enjoyed this even as a Pens fan. Part of me was kinda happy to see Ovechkin finally hoist the cup. I hope the Pens and Caps meet in the playoffs again some day.
I completely agree about 2020. I’ll always ask what could’ve been. Ovi was nearing 60 goal pace, and the Caps were nasty that whole year. They looked completely different in the bubble. But I will always be convinced, even if not realistically, that had the Caps escaped game 7 with the Canes (or had Oshie not been cheap-shot’d of the playoffs) they had a more than decent shot at repeating. That roster (more so than 2020) was stacked and I believed it to be better on paper than 2018, especially with Ovechkin and Backstrom playing in the way they did.
tbh i feel like we easily would've went to at leas the third round in 2019 had we won game 7 instead of the canes. We would've dismantled the isles easy in a 4 game sweep or in 5 like carolina did and while it is difficult to defend a title even with a nearly identical roster and while we prolly would've lost to boston in round 3 given how unbeatable they were, i feel like we would've put up a more entertaining fight than the canes did. We prolly would've lost but it def wouldn't have been by a sweep. It prolly would've bene in 5 or 6 games which tbh would've been good enough for me cause going to the confernence final is a very successful season and like i said its hard to defend a title. 2020 was still a very similar roster and yah ovi would've had like 57-58 goals if the last 12 games had been completed but tbh i sadly wasn't surprised we lsot in round 1 (despite our opponent being the isles a team that wasn't even supposed to be there but only dud due to the expanded format) mainly because the idea of playing in a goofy bubble in canada without family, friends or fans deflated the players and the mentality within the team. 2021, 2022 and 2024 we ofc were defeated simply cause we played teams that were higher seeded than us.
i knew we were gonna win game 6 being at home but tbh i had doubts ab game 7 simply cause it was on the road and ofc its the bolts but once we blasted them in game 7, that was when i knew it was inevitable that we would finally win the cup
Pens fan here. Really enjoyed this retrospective! Really respect how Caps fans love their team and pour their entire selves into every game and every series. Can't wait for Ovie to break the record. (Also, please do this for the Crosby era Pens!)

Caps Canes isn't a rivalry but it does fill a weird sports world niche where you have fans of a sport get an expansion team that actually manifested in Carolina in the NFL as well. Lotta folks in NC were Washington fans before the Canes/Panthers showed up
for sure although i think the hardest series we had was the following round against tampa since they were the top seed and had more experience than us at long runs given those 2015 and 2016 runs and obviously 2015-2022 for them was like a dynasty of sorts but we pulled through butchering them in game 7 in their building. I knew we would win game 6 being at home but game 7 i had doubts on as a lifelong caps fan since it was at amaile arena. I knew it was gonna go 7 games with them being the top seed and us being the second and while i had doubts ab game 7 simply cause it was in their building, i knew that once we did beat them that we were winning the cup

As a Caps fan, I'm ready to be hurt again :'^) Lot of heartache in these series, but weirdly 2022 against the Panthers stung a lot. The Panthers won the president's trophy, but they were a very flawed team the Caps could have beat. Game 4 will forever curdle my guts. Can't wait for part 2 of this.
tbh as a lifelong caps fan myself, 2019 i think we were robbed of at least going to the conference finals cause our roster was nearly the same as the year prior and we outplayed the canes through most of game 7 in round 1. I was at game 5 and we ofc butchered them and they not surprisingly won game 6 but i fully expected to win game 7 since it was back home. And if we had won game 7 there we easily would've dismantled the isles to reach the conference finals for a second consecutive season. While the chances of beating the bruins and repeating as cup champs were unlikely, i do think we would've put up a tougher fight against boston than the canes did and prolly would've lost in 5 or 6 unlike the canes who ofc did in a sweep which tbh would've been good enough for me given how successful a franchise is if they go as far as the conference finals. 2020 ofc was similar roster wise too but it was a goofy enviornment with the covid bubble and they didn't feel as motivated and looking back on it now i personally can see why we were upset then by the isles. 2021, 2022 and 2024 we were outplayed by teams that were higher seeded than us so sadly not surprising to see those first round exits.

Rangers-Capitals was/is a criminally underrated rivalry. 6 playoff meetings in 16 years, 4 going the distance. 2009 and especially 2011 are some of my earliest memories as a hockey fan. Brandon Dubinsky had that legendary mustache and then there was the “can you hear us?” chant at msg that backfired tremendously (game 4 OT own goal). Not at all surprised that half their meetings have yet to be mentioned, and I’m excited to see where they’re ranked in part 2

Aside from 2019-2024, ofc round 1 in 2008, 2010 and 2013 and round 2 in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016 and 2017 were all very disheartening losses but we weren't necessarily ready to win in those times let alone go to at least round 3 and ofc we finally did get it in 2018 to give us closure from those deflating losses. Obviously you wanna win as many cups as possible but seeing 1 is better than none especially if it was in the 2010s decade, the most difficult decade in league history mo since it was dominated by goaltending, defense and depth players.
When talking about the 24' Rangers special teams, it's also important to mention their PK. Yes they relied a lot on their powerplay, but through the first two rounds, they'd given up 2 goals in each series, while scoring 2 shorties in each series. Both Washington and Carolina's power plays struggled against the Rangers for those reasons. And then the Rangers ran into Florida...

new to this channel, absolutely digging the video here, but i'm going to let my stathead rangers side take over for 7:13 - check out the rangers 5v5 stats when the game was tied during that series - if i recall correctly, the Rangers had a lead for 170 minutes at 5v5 that series? its a bit of coping from me buT its not unfounded !
I haven’t even started and I’m willing to guess that at least 3/9 of the top nine are Rangers-Caps. We may have gotten the best of that beef, but they got the cup.
I agree, that 2020 series vs the islanders SUCKED. Just from watching it. That was the start of the more disappointing series losses (Boston, Florida, etc.)

@@NolanEgbert well come on everyone wants to win and will do whatever it takes to win it but the idea of playing in an empty bubble with no family, friends or fans, it is understandable if they were deflated or had lost motivation or focus cause of that due to the lack of in person support. Plus, the isles only manhandled us once not back to back.
@@ethanparker7900 I’d argue the Islanders had the most to lose by not having a home crowd considering it was still during the Coliseum era but they still showed up when it mattered. And I meant they manhandled Pittsburgh the prior year and then the Caps the next, both teams who the Islanders couldn’t get past the previous 10+ seasons
If I had to guess the remaining order, top 8 may be (8) 2015 Islanders, (7) 2013 Rangers, (6) 2008 Flyers, (5) 2017 Leafs, (4) 2009 Penguins, (3) 2012 Rangers, (2) 2012 Bruins, (1) 2015 Rangers.
I’m least confident in 6-4 though, because of that 2009 game 7 potentially weighing down that series, while 2008 and 2017 were definitely tighter on average. 2008 might leap frog 2017 leafs because of its game 7 as well.
