You Are Being Mythologized (Do Not Resist) | The Career of Carey Price

Carey Price is the winningest goalie in the history of the most historical hockey franchise in the world. Unfortunately, he was also the victim of some deification from the Canadiens fanbase. In one of the most unique relationships between a nigh-religious fanbase and an elite goaltender, Price would experience all the ups and downs imaginable in both the sport and in life.

Does anybody else catch the irony that, on the very last game of a career defined by him backstopping a team incapable of scoring, his teammates put up 10 goals?

Them putting up 10 in a meaningless game where the Panthers were resting all their best players for Price's final game is weirdly fitting, but I am glad they could get one last good game in for Carey...

As a montrealer, I remember mid 2010s Carey Price being special. Not just in his stats, not just in the way he played, but also in the way people would talk about him, almost as if he was a sacred idol. Playing goalie in the streets and you made a big save? Carey Price. He was the heart and soul of the organization, of the city, of the province for years and I so wish he had gotten that cup in 2021. Not to see my habs win, to see Carey win. The same way he was compared to Dryden and Roy, Habs goalies will now be compared to Price. Even though I understood his reasons, I was heartbroken when he announced he would be stepping away. Every time he stops by the Bell Centre for ceremonial purposes, I don't think there's a dry eye in the building. We miss Carey, and we'll forever love him.

I was lucky enough to have a private meet and greet with Carey November 2023. I owned one of his last ever jerseys he wore. I was going to have him sign it, but I asked him if he had any of his last ever worn jerseys. I was saddened to hear he did not. I gave him his jersey he wore in 2022 against Philly. He was moved and genuinely surprised someone would offer something like that to him with no strings. Guy could flat out play. Had it not been for injuries, he could have played to almost 40 and dominate. Suck a good piece that has been created. Everyone who doubted the kid and tore him down should watch this. Montreal had something special. He will be first ballot hall of fame! I truly feel if the Bell Center could have been filled to capacity against the Lightning, the series could have been different.

Just to add something about how magical that final 10-2 game against the pathers was. The game was played on April 29th, and Guy Lafleur had died exactly a week earlier, on April 22nd. It was Guy Lafleur bobblehead night the the Bell Centre, something that had been planned long before Lafleur's death. The team scored 10 goals that night, and Lafleur wore #10. Chants of "Guy! Guy! Guy!" filled the arena as Price played his final game. The ghosts of the Forum were in the building.

As a generational Habs fan, when I began watching hockey, Price was in his golden age. As a little kid watching Canadiens games on TV with my family, I picked Carey out as my favourite player. And he still is. Long after he's gone, he will continue to be my idol. Just writing this comment has brought back memories of me at 8 or 9 or 10 years old, wearing pillows on my legs and pretending to be Carey Price. I loved this video. Even more so than King Henrik, I feel for Carey price. He deserved a cup, and the Habs failed him time after time. This man put the team on his back year after year, and the meager supporting cast always let him down. What a shame
@malcolmk2878
@malcolmk2878 6 месяцев назад
Beyond that, the fans often failed him too. There are still French Canadians TO THIS DAY who say "Carey Price never won anything". In the face of facts, in the face of stats, they're immovable in their rejection of him. And they're not a loud minority. There are actually quite many of them. Mostly French-Canadians, as I haven't met a whole lot of Anglophone Habs fans who don't absolutely adore Carey. And he's had to deal with that his entire career. Even after his absolutely sensational run in 2021. Marc Bergevin set Carey up. He gave him an absolutely ridiculous contract that never should have been, and he failed repeatedly to help him out by building an actual team around him. Marc Bergevin failed Carey, and he failed the Montreal fans he was always so condescending toward. My greatest regret is that Carey never wona Cup with us, or at all. I hoope he can stay close to the organization and some day have his name carved into Lord Stanley's Cup. He deserves it more than any other goalie I know.

I remember being in a Cage aux Sports to watch a playoff game in the 2010 playoffs, and I had my Carey Price jersey on. I was getting plenty of hostility from habs fans around me. As if wearing a Price jersey instead of a Halak jersey was sacrilegious. I never doubted that Price was the guy. On a side note, that Kreider slide to Price's knee will haunt me forever. Habs would have faced the 8th seed LA kings in the finals. It was the year to win it all.

Great video and super storytelling. Those of us who remember the Habs of the late 60's through the 80's came alive again in the Price period.

Loved this video! I got massive Jon Bois vibes from the presentation, the delivery, and how you connected it to topics bigger than sports. Hockey youtube has been missing these kind of well researched, well presented videos and I'll definitely subscribe and be on the look out for more from you!

I remember being in the 7th grade and having to do a report on a canadian hero. Without a shadow of a doubt Price was the guy who came to mind. I wish hed come back to play 1 more season. But im content with him being the greatest goalie ive ever seen on the ice.

Long form RU-vid content adds so much value - this is amazing, well done. Also, I feel bad for Price - he deserved a better team, especially in scoring (and I'm a Habs fan). That said, beating the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 6/7 was our collective Stanley Cup!

Check out Jon Bois at SB Nation! he sadly doesn't do hockey content but that's the style this channel emulates and he uses it to tell some of the best stories in sports history I think you'll love it as a fellow long form sports content enjoyer

On the live broadcast Pierre Mcguire called the pick "right off the reservation" within 5 seconds. And he wasn't referring to his Aboriginal roots. That aged like milk to put it lightly.

Pierre was kind of right though - with his comments about how the Habs didn't need Price. They really did have so many other needs

Best practice is take the best player available. If Hab scouts looked past the fact Kopitar didn't play in N. America they would have been much better off. Being in the Q even if he is Slovenian may have helped. Passing on Brule was still a miracle looking back at the Louis Leblanc pick.

Sounds racist to me. Poor choice of words considering Price was a Native Canadian. And to think they canceled Don Cherry for much much less.

Carey Price is the reason I love hockey. I’ve been a generational Habs fan but I came of age during the mid 2010s and the 2014 playoff run until the Kreider incident will always be some of my most cherished memories. A lot of my friends are die hard leaf or bruins fans but back then even they could admit that we had the very best between the pipes. Had he been on basically any other team in those years he could have won the cup. He will go down as one of the greats. I wish he could have won it for us habs faithful so much, but I wish he could have won it for him even more.

Love the content! If I may just make a small suggestion: adding a column with the final score when showing playoffs series stats would add a lot of value / context to the information conveyed. It's almost impossible to know who won a game when only showing goalie stats, unless sv% = 1.000 ; ) Anyways, very good stuff!!

As a fellow Williams Laker, watching him get injured in the 2014 conference finals was brutal. Im not even a habs fan but that should've been his year. Waiting 7 years to see him go that far again was a long time to wait but when he came back in 2021 the whole nation was on his side. To see him hoist the cup would've been a dream come true for everyone back home. Even though it didn't come to fruition...he will still remain a legend for life.
