When I played a gay actor sim who had a husband and had taken in their niece and nephew he was constantly pared across from another guy in romantic scenes. I certainly appreciated that.
That’s nice but it’s also not realistic at all because that’s not how it goes lol. I’ve heard that usually gay actors don’t like it when they’re made to be gay in every movie
@Laura Goth Girl I would never expect it in real life. Like how I wouldn't expect an openly gay man to actually become a successful mainstream actor in real life as angering as it is that this won't happen. I'm just noting it seems to be weighted toward the romantic interest for an actor matching their apparent sexual orientation by the game. Further, I feel like in real life a part of that frustration is that it stifles their career and makes it harder to break into the mainstream as while quear movies are great they aren't widely marketed or known. I found the fact that my fake successful actor could be gay and play a gay superhero as the leading role at the height of his very successful career fun even if such a thing is a very long way off in real life.
57:40 I believe that the trailer for this pack shows Caleb flirting with both a male and a female sim, so many players consider him to be bisexual. Unfortunately, there's nothing in the actual game that depicts him as bi
Oh that makes sense!! I have never seen the trailer so that's why I wouldn't know. It kind of seems like they do that a lot honestly...I'm considering making a video about that.
I love Caleb, he's in a polyamorous relationship with my Simself, my Simself's boyfriend and his main forever love is Morgyn Ember(my most favorite) Cagyn Forever💕 We all have 4 way relationship lol🥰 but there are times when I just want Cagyn for myself 🤭
@@SimberPlays Yeah, I've noticed that the way they market some of the DLCs (especially recently) is straight up queerbaiting. Like the Modern Menswear and Carnaval Streetwear kits - they market it as some revolutionary gender nonconforming clothing, but it leaves much to be desired because there's little to no actual non-binary/trans representation in the game. Also they often put same-sex couples in the promotional materials (box art, renders, screenshots), but few of them are actually in the game
@@cierpie8874 Yeah I was going back and forth on whether I would call it queerbaiting, but you're right that for the trailers at least that's definitely what it is
@@SimberPlays honestly English is not my first language so "queerbaiting" may not be the exact phrase I was looking for. I mostly meant it as a mixture of false advertising combined with the fact that many queer identities are not represented as thoroughly as they should be
Looked it up real quick and Two-Spirit is specifically a north american native term which is exclusive to certain tribes and is a closed culture thing Hawi'i does have a similar gender but its called Māhū (i cant find anything about it being a closed culture thing as well but i feel like it would be)
For base game you missed the “Portrait of a Marriage” having mlm and wlw swatches Also, I played as an actor for my legacy challenge and his love interest was always a guy The wishing well can give you a gay romance as well
@@meldoesntwanttotellyouthei7012 Yeah I have heard there is like a hidden trait for attraction that can develop based on who you flirt with (not sure if that's still a thing with the sexual orientation update though). Would be interesting if the wishing well relationships were based on that ooh i wonder if the new sexual orientation settings affect it
So, the reason all of the base game lots have a gender neutral bathroom door instead of gendered ones, despite all the dlc worlds having gendered bathrooms, is because the gendered doors were added in an update a couple months after the game came out. Although I think recently they've stopped putting the gendered doors in lots.
I feel like listing the base game under ‘homophobic’ is taking some things for granted. Not in an insulting way, it’s totally fine! However, if you think about it, we could be in gay relationships, get married, adopt, even I’m pretty sure making kids from same sex couples could be done in CAS in the original base game. And sure we’ve had all that for a while in the Sims 4 franchise but it’s still content! Also I think it was added later but you can make trans sims! Honestly even the fact that’s sorta taken for granted makes me happy because it shows how far the community has come. Also I think one of the reasons there’s no pride protests or parades in City Living is because the Sims is supposed to be a utopia of sorts. From what I remember, all the protest signs and stuff are very vague on purpose, so adding homophobia and transphobia (even implied past homophobia and transphobia via pride) would sorta ruin that vibe. I do think other than adding canon queer sims, equality in gameplay, and a few things in CAS/BB is enough tbh. But more is always better! But I don’t think there needs to be a gay couple in every world considering many of them only have like 7 people and all. So personally I think most of the packs do a fine job, even though I agree the bathrooms and trying on outfits should be more equal.
hmm I guess I didn't really think of those things as being base game things, just something that's in the game overall. I was mostly looking at the CAS and build items that came with each pack, along with the premade sims, and there are no gay premade base game sims
and there wouldn't necessarily have to be a couple for a sim to canonically be gay. But there really aren't any base game sims I can think of that particularly give off queer vibes. Maybe Johnny Zest, but I think that's more from the storyline of being disowned by his parents than any particular queer coding for him
The base game isn’t homophobic but is the gay content really that accessible or even meant to be obvious to someone new to this game especially back then, like I looked up trailers and it made no mention of the possibilities of a gay character like had I seen this back then I would assume it was straight just because of presentation. It’s worth noting a homophobic person could pick up a base copy of the Sims and never see gay content in the base game.
Personally I would still put it under homophobic for the inclusion of the straight/ally pride flag with the base game pride flags. I don't know if I really need to elaborate but they were supposed to be putting something in for us and instead of adding even more queer flags (for example none of the demigender flags are included) to have even more representation, they put a straight/ally one in? Did it really need to be there?
I also feel like rainbow umbrellas can be commonly found without the intention of a LGBTQ+ connection though, particularly in the pattern found in Seasons
Outdoor retreat has got only one rainbow object and it got "could be gayer". Seasons has got many rainbow objects and they are "maybe if you squint". Rainbow mailbox! Come on. I think they should be exchanged 😄
I think Seasons should get a special tier made for them limited by concept, or Seasons tier which I’d honestly put below everything because that should have been included in base game content
There are some sims you left out, I've made a list of the ones you hid or possibly didn't know about. *Caleb Vatore* is Bisexual. *Guidry,* the ghost of the paranormal pack is Bisexual. *Vi Moradi* from Batuu she is asexual and aromantic. Also unfortunately most queer sims are only in the gallery. *Dana Adler* is a trans or non-binary woman. *Armand DiAggro and Bjorn Tu'Rock* are a gay couple, both are bisexual. *Kan Fetter* is probably non-binary. *Mia Hayes* and *Dela Ostrow* are a lesbian couple. *Hina Matsumoto and Niko Okada* are a lesbian couple used in promotional material for Snowy Escape. *Ross Valentin and Brent Hong* are a gay couple. Also, you mentioned in the video about the lack of queer teens, I know the High School pack hadn't even come out when the video was made, but luckily all the teens in that pack are queer. *Noah Kane* is gay. *Sidney Price* is Bisexual. *Savannah Price* is asexual. *Molly Prescott* is Lesbian. *Liam Beckett* (only found in the gallery) he is Bisexual and aromantic. *Ash Harjo* is Non-Binary. *Eloise Hiddlestix* is Lesbian. *Anjelo Morlind* é bisexual. There are also some sims that, although they have no confirmation, have some indication that they may be queer *Greta Laurent,* in several of her outfits, she has her nails painted in the colors of the Bi flag. *Minerva Charm* has a male voice, but I'm not sure whether that indicates she's queer. *Ava Harjo* is romantically attracted to men, and she is not exploring romantically. However, her WooHoo preferences are both men and women, I don't exactly where she fits in, but I believe she is somehow queer.
Thanks for the list! With Caleb Vatore I didn't see anything in game to indicate that he's bisexual, but someone else explained to me that he appeared bisexual in the trailer for the pack so that makes sense
I'm very happy about the pronoun and sexual orientation update, too bad that the pronouns are only in the english version, which is not really The Sims team's fault because, for example, portuguese and spanish are gendered languages, so everything has a gender, like "o livro" and "la bicicleta", you're using a male article to talk about a book and a female one to talk about a bike. We also don't have an equivalent for they/them because all the pronouns are gendered too, there are no neutral ones, so it's a problem for non-binary people and other people that don't like to use he/him and she/her pronouns. So, I would put grammatical gender in the homophobic tier haha Also, great video! RU-vid recommended it to me and I'm glad it did 💚
Yeh I can't realy blame the Sims' team to not have put that in the other localizations. In italy we still can't agree on the best way to addess non-binary peopole, so it's motsly a case by case scenario untill we'll figure that out.
@@nuotatorre8741 yeah it's the same in German, we have so many possible neo pronouns and don't get me wrong they're all valid if people want to use them but there is not yet a standard so most of my nb friends simply ask people to alternate she/her and he/him - don't think a game can really represent this. But a solution I can think of is maybe custom pronouns? Like you are prompted to enter a text for every grammatical pronoun? It's not elegant but it's the only solution I can think of
@@Nirax3 In Italy from what I've heard the most popular option is useing the 3rd formal person. Whenever we talk to with highterups we actualy use the 3rd person we would normaly use for femele nouns, however in a formal contex it's unisex so I've heard many peopole like to use that.
The thing that really disappoints me about the base game is (apart from the lack of queer sims/couples), is that every queer feature is half finished. Like, they say you can have trans sims, but the only options are biological things, and there is no social aspect to it (like, if I had a afab sim, they could only be male with a female frame, or biologically male. There are no top surgery skin details, no binders…)The pronouns update is so bad too. They/them pronouns never work (my non binary sim constantly got misgendered, or the grammar of the pronouns was off, which proves they didn’t even test if the gender neutral pronouns work), and they basically gave up on adding pronouns to any other language than English (which pisses me off a lot as a Spanish person, even if I only play on English)
I totally agree! And they always say they'll update it later but then they don't. They just put it out half-finished and assume they'll get the good press and everyone will forget about it being broken or unfinished. It's really frustrating
i thought the "it's on us" was a program to help prevent sexual assault. i'd also like the add that AJR wrote a song titled "it's on us" referring to this program and i personally really like it!
Thank you for acknowledging how unhelpful slogans like "It gets better" are. I'm a 35 year old trans man. Every job I've had since coming out has been abusive to me. Complete strangers get up in my grill while I'm out minding my own business because they see my pronouns on a pin or mask and think that's their cue to go be snotty and hostile to me about it. I still can't access the insurance I need to medically transition. And there aren't any trans-exclusive support groups in my city, even though it's one of the bigger and more progressive cities in my state. The only support group we have lets cis "allies" attend and the microaggressions from them make me not feel safe going back there. It didn't get better for me.
Thank you! I am hoping the algorithm will eventually pick it up and show it to more people because sometimes it can take a while, but in the meantime I am glad the people who are watching it are enjoying it and it's really nice to get this feedback!
On the note of Strangerville. There's nothing gayer than saving the world with your friends. But also the pack is homophobic bc I hate doing the boss fight, it's so tedious
The sad thing about the Get to Work mannequins is that in Create a Sim, wearing whatever gender's clothes you want is now a BASEGAME feature! They just need to update that. We now have an expansion pack that's LESS advanced than the BASEgame. You have more freedom changing into magical free clothes at home, than you do with buying them from a store. --Ulrike and Maaike: "And they were ROOMMATES!" ;) But yeah, Ulrike definitely gives like, les goth vibes. I kinda want to hook her up with Lilith Vatore. --Well, now that we have science babies, Raj can NOT hook up with a nice GUY who is just his FRIEND, and still "carry on the family line" anyway! There, MOM, you have a grandchild! --Cats and Dogs has Brent and Brant, of course, and I once hooked up Catarina with a lady Sim in HALF an afternoon, so there's that. ;) --Oh yeah, mermaids DEFINITELY work as a queer metaphor. Discovering who you really are, hiding it, living two lives, metamorphosing...(See also: werewolves.) Their tails also flop out of every bathtub, which can kinda work as a LITERALLY "not fitting in" metaphor, or a "differently-shaped people should be accomodated too" thing. --The mixed-gender dorms: Yeah, my current legacy matriarch met her husband at her dorm. She flunked outta college, but found her soulmate. Who also turned out to be a werewolf. XD --I LOVE the characters and decor in Eco Lifestyle. I also put the rainbow sweater (pink version) on my '80s Sim. (I made decades as Sims. Because of course I did.) --Outdoor Retreat is one of the best packs, I feel, for tomboy/lesbian style. There's just a lot of sturdy, plain, practical clothing that everybody can wear. I haven't really used the actual camping stuff much, but I was kinda pleasantly surprised at how often I end up using the clothes and furniture. Put your female Sim in plain canvas shorts, stick her hair up in a practical, just-get-outta-my-face ponytail, and have her go clomping down the trail in heavy leather boots. Then she can sleep in a plaid bed hewn out of whole freakin' logs. XD --Spa Day would be the other way around--since everybody can pamper themselves and wear mud masks, it can be FAAAABULOUUUUUUS! Male Sims talking about their latest manicure and "You MUST try the so-and-so, dahling" would kinda fit with Spa Day. --Dine Out: The first time I make a restaurant, ALL my employees WILL be wearing either maid outfits or it'll be Catboy Hooters. I have decreed this. --Vampires are gay, werewolves are trans. FACTS. --Makin' Magic: Yeah, I noticed who your profile picture is, as soon as I clicked on this video. ;) Morgynn is...one of everybody's fave Sims. For good reasons. :) --Dream Home Decorator: For some reason, the first thing I did when I got that pack, was make an ace Sim with her outfit based off the asexual flag colors, give her a lovely lavendar kitty, and move them into the trailer in Strangerville. Where she now has to get information about the town secrets WITHOUT seducing the military people/scientists, as most players do. Tl;dr: Strangerville might not be _already_ queer, but I decided to make it that way. :) Spooky Stuff: I've always adored Halloween, the whole feel and atmosphere of it, etc. I also a few years ago figured out that I'm ace, not just a REALLY REALLY REALLY late-bloomer tomboy. These things are not unrelated. :) --"Is there a gay ice cream I don't know about?" XD Actually...I bought rainbow sherbet from the store the other day specifically BECAUSE it's June. Yep. (Also I like rainbow sherbet.) --Oh, Movie Hangout Stuff is Boho A. F. Gay I dunno about specifically, but psychedelic hippie den, DEFINITELY. --Romantic Garden Stuff lets _everybody_ wear flowery fabulous stuff regardless of their frame, so that's nice. --I love how your Spooky Stuff Sim kept getting annoyed at all the clothing piles THEY were actively causing. XD
@@rgg1009 ah did you find that out after he was romantic with one of your male sims by any chance? Because that can affect their orientation. They all start not particularly romantically attracted to any gender, but if your sim flirts with them they will become attracted to sims of that gender
With the household stories thing on Johnny Zest married Don Lothario and they lived together with one of Don’s kids (he has a lot, that one is Katrina Caliente but he’s also got some with Mei Prescott and the other Calientes)
You’re definitely reaching on a lot of these- first I don’t feel like everything rainbow = gay. Second I think you can’t really call “tattoos” or “piercings” gay
Maybe tattoos and piercings aren't inherently gay per se but they are part of queer culture / lots of queer people have them which means many queers are excited to be able to use them on their Sims so I think it's a fair point especially for a fun queer vibe video like this
I know this video is old and I don't know if anyone has brought this up (I scrolled in the comments but couldn't find it), but It's On Us isn't about queerness at all. It's a campaign about stopping sexual assault. Obama was apart of the campaign, which gives you perspective that the campaign has been around for a while now. The shirt was in the game for a very long time, much longer then the pride related clothes.
huh I definitely got that mixed up with the it gets better campaign then. Unfortunately I'm not sure if it was really effective at dealing with that issue either, but that's good information to know
Yeah no it's not very effective at all, it doesn't even raise awareness since people don't know what they're referring too. However, I suppose it was them trying to show support as big companies do, though not very effectively.
Yeah unfortunately they dont really work for a lot of sims so I didnt include them. I have a few short videos about that ru-vid.comTte2Ta9LGVE?si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
@Simber they're called the shear family! also a little correction, I checked the wiki and their kid is biologically theirs! I think one of them is a scientist or smthn
The bff household may not have been intentionally queer in the slightest, but because I didn't want want to choose who should date Travis, I put the 3 in a poly relationship! They now have a teen daughter together.
I wanna comment, but don't know what, so here's my most recent interaction with a canon sim. I recently played with realm of magic again and decided to change Morgan Embers pronouns to they/vi and then made them be my roommate. I don't think vi liked the raccoons (I had five), but at least vi and my sim got along and even took care of the llama.
I don’t want to be a bore but I think you’re stretching way to far especially with some of the build buy, like for example the set stuff from get famous. I guess you can use the rainbow but I don’t think it’s meant to be queer. I just think it’s a rainbow, for a set… Also I’d put cats and dogs in “could be gayer” since they have Brent and Brant.
I mean the point wasn't to rate everything intended to be gay, but the things that could be used to add queerness to the game. I am stretching but it's not like there's that much explicit queer representation in any of the packs
The LGBTQ update is my favorite. I LOVE that your sim can be trans without being forced into a certain body, the flags, the pronoun use, and the sexuality preferences.
i also think the fact that the sims 4 has the “lipstick lesbian” flag is worth mentioning, since it is notoriously transphobic. there have been multiple updates to the pride flags in the game but it’s almost like the sims team refuses to take it out!!! 😭😭😭 idk it’s been a while since i’ve looked at them so maybe it’s gone now?
every new save I start, Brant Hecking always somehow dies and neighborhood stories always decides to remarry Brent with a woman... so that's pretty homophobic
Exactly! I don’t know why they added 3 lesbian flags (especially the lipstick lesbian one) and still haven’t removed the problematic one, or added the gay pride flag
I think the reason is that when the pride flags were added to the base game the blue and green gay flag wasn't in very wide use yet. It would be cool to see them add it though!
@@cpmcomics8335 yeah for the three lesbian pride flags I think what happened is they originally added the transphobic one (because they didn't know what was the "right" one) and got backlash but didn't really want to do the research so they just threw all of them in there
I know this is old, but I'm just now seeing it. Anyway, I'll tell you what. They definitely added more representation for the LGBTQIA+ community throughout the game and a lot faster than they did for the black community. Look how long it took for them to add more skin tones, afro textured hairstyles and fix the ones that existed in base game. That is the main reason I use alpha CC, although I use maxis match also. I literally have to use a bunch of CC just to make black sims look how we actually do IRL. Even after Xmiramira created the melanin pack for black sims, it still took them years to add more skin tones. Black simmers complaining didn't change a thing. They only cared because they started getting backlash once the popular white simmers started saying it's hard to make black sims because there weren't enough skin tones. I do feel like they're improving because now they're also creating black townie families. There's nothing wrong with multicultural families, but black loving black families do exist. As far as creating sims, for a lot of us, using CC is still necessary depending on how detailed you want them to look. I downloaded some makeup for LGBTQIA+ sims. I can't wait to use it.
I think it's because it's rainbow washing. Where companies will just like put rainbows on stuff cause they think it will make gay people want to buy their things. It's a marketing tactic
@@gabby993 queerbaiting is a bit more specific because it's when they pretend something is going to be gay but isn't. It's usually more about relationships in media than like color schemes
When i only had base game i instantly trans'd Olivia Kim-Lewis the second i saw them walking past my house. They're transmasc non-binary and their name is Oli. They were my Sim's first partner as a teen. Oli is married to Esther Caliente with two kids now. My Morgyn Ember is in a polycule with my sim and her husband, and theyre AMAB androgynous they/he enby and they are also so SILLY and there is absolutely no thoughts behind his eyes. They just be doing the silliest things, and setting the house on fire accidentally, and lying on the sidewalk outside the front of the family home. Completely braindead, I'm so in love with him. I sent them to university to study drama and he immediately failed two classes and got put on probation. Just the sim equivalent of the 👁️👄👁️ face. Idk if anyone else's Morg is like that but mine is just a silly little gay. They are an incredible parent too. I love just watch him be autonomously silly and kind. Also just on Get to Work - that is on my "absolutely never" list of DLC because I refuse to add cops into my game in any capacity lol. My sims are GAY and they do be doing CRIME, no pigs allowed 😤
8:08 of course the aromantic one is an alien. What else would they be? In case someone reads this and is unaware, it is kind of a trope in media to essentially make aliens and robots aroace(or as they say it that "they do not understand the concept of love") to highten their otherness to the allo(someone who is not aro or ace) viewers. I don't think that they intended this(they probably just thought "oh the aromantic pride flag has a lot of green similar to aliens"), but it is a bit unfortunate.
Yeah I tend to relate to aro/ace characters that are like robots/aliens but I get why it's an unfortunate pattern. Especially in media with humans and stuff where only the aliens are aromantic, as if humans couldn't be. It's frustrating
@@SimberPlays yeah. Thankfully there have been some(though very few) non alien/robot aromantic and/or asexual characters. The start of my comment was kind of a joke by the way. Not actually angry about that picture.
I WAS JUST WATCHING TO SEE IF YOU WOULD SAY THE VAMPIRE PACK HAD TO BE GAY JUST BECAUSE. VAMPIRES ARE SUPER GAY THANK GOD ALL THE QUEERS KNOW THIS FACT
I love the werewolves pack, but there is no explicit queer representation (well i think maybe some piece of lore mentions a gay couple?) I think I talked about it some in the video where I made trans werewolves ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T8zIbIPLQbA.html&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
Rory the leader of the wildfangs came out JUST before the pronoun release but I am absolutely certain they would have been made non binary if they had been post update, they are very queer coded as well as the whole pack. Celine the bartender screams lesbian to me too!
I had a bigender Sim who married Angela Pleasant. They had four kids, though I had to use a mod that gave artificial insemination and so it doesn't consider the kids belonging to both my Sim and Angela. I even deleted the 'dads' and used cheats, but nothing worked so I gave up. I also killed Angela's sister and made all the kids queer! The oldest kid was bigender, then the triplets in order were I think nonbinary, trans, and cis? Two were born male and two were born female, and I think one of the boys was interested in the Pancake's son!
It’s really fun too look at this now because in high school years that came out like not really long ago we have a gay sim (I just know one sim but maybe there is more sims who are gay) omg I forgot too say that not really long ago the added in cas u can change the pronounnce of the sims so ther is custom, she/her, he/him,they them
Could be gayer ended up being used as should be gayer, I would have added a Corporations when it’s June tier because man some of that content is so bare bones
Cottage living has rainbow cows and rainbow llamas. Rainbow llamas give you rainbow wool and you can get rainbow milk from the cows, literally taste the rainbow
40:17 I just played as the Greenburg family for a second to switch The Waterfront to a community garden (I just got Eco Lifestyle and I don't really play as townies)-Knox is listed in the game as Blossom's son and Mary's stepson, so I personally imagined him as Blossom's bio son from a previous relationship (also, Mary had a want/whim to flirt with Knox and I was trying to figure out WTF was going on 😅)
1:03:09 ALSO! I did actually manage to move a household into Selvadorada! I changed one of the vacation homes to a Haunted House Residential and then placed them on a different lot in like, Newcrest and had them move. But like, it's very obviously a thing that you're not /supposed/ to be doing, and they actually didn't automatically show up in 'my households'. So like, it is possible, but it's not great
Honestly, Journey to Batuu should be in homophobic, since its a Disney property, and even if we tend to have Disney phases, Disney IS pretty homophobic
Surprised you didn't bring up the mpreg stuff that happens with Get to Work. Aliens could be gay canonically, or maybe it's female ones that can make a sim pregnant? Idk. You could argue it's kinda rape-y since they need to get abducted, I don't personally think "probing" is without consent because I doubt the developers meant it that way...but yeah. Regardless alien sims don't conform to gender in _some_ way, and an argument could be made it's not fantastic representation because they aren't human, and there's a trend where in media LGBTQ+ folks tend to be aliens, robots etc., but it's still there... ...of course, they then went ahead and made it impossible for that to happen when you create alien sims instead of getting abducted, so that sucks!
43:17 so you’re saying it’s very lacking in gameplay, and it’s also very lacking in… gayplay? 🤭 (Btw love the video, once I’m done I’m watching the follow up, honestly I’m still disappointed in the lack of labret piercings, which is canonically the gayest piercing)
2:03 to be fair, i discovered the supposed love triangle after my gayass rockstar sim started dating liberty so idk fam thats pretty gay Liberty and marina >>>> liberty and travis
Oh I forgot to add them! I recommend these videos by verilybitchie ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7hP8H1kbT1Q.html&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U2nZVAryOU0.html&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
The most based review of the packs I've ever seen, love this! I can only imagine that you had a ball with HSY, that's probably the gayest pack known to humankind
