I haven't read a number of these books, but my quarter-baked idea is that maybe you like horror where the atmosphere and setting are key to the book and even drive the plot? I'm thinking about Our Wives Under the Sea and your comments about space horror but also things like The Only Good Indians and even My Best Friend's Exorcism (which would not be the same book if it was set in another time period imo).

Also before I forget: adding to the chorus of people who are recommending The Last House on Needless Street. What a ride! Secondly, since you like Grady Henderix, have you checked out Horrorstor? Its a camp extravaganza in a b-rate IKEA knock off store. Definitely check out the physical copy because it gives old Sears catalogs your grandparents had in the best way lol Also also its not technically horror but I feel like you would like the vibes of Rebecca by Daphne de Murier (definitely butchered that last name)

omg yes i remember when you posted about FGSG on goodreads and i was like HUH?? genuinely was thinking of you when i said i don't understand people who like it 😂 and also yes you should absolutely read Catherine House if you liked Bunny! they're a similar brand of weird. since you like Grady Hendrix, i think there's a good chance you'll like The Hollow Place because T Kingfisher has a similar sense of humor to her writing.

I have very similar taste in terms of horror, I was nodding along with almost every decision you made😆I'm a big fan of short horror. Less pacing issues. Cirque Beserk by Jessica Guess is really fun (It's like Hide by Kirsten White except good) The Cavern by Alister Hodge was a good ocean horror with some local folklore elements (though the audiobook was NOT it). I really enjoyed The Venue by TJ Payne, The Forgotten Island by David Sodergren, and In the Hills Above the Gristmill by Kalvin Ellis. My favorite horror books this year are How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix(almost skipped it, glad I didn't. More of study on complicated family dynamics but with some gore and humor) and Briardark by SA Harian (Unsure if you'd like this. Think Blair Witch Project meets the show Lost. Also it's a series and the next book isn't out yet. But I'm Obsessed)

I really love this book called thin air by Michelle Paver. I remember reading this part about the main character being in the tent alone on the snowy mountain and him starting to hear voices and hallucinate. Ok, so I’ve narrowed it down to five books I think you COULD be into based on your top reads (all of which I have read, so I feel like I can offer some expertise here): 1. Monstrilio by Gerardo Samano Cordova 2. Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke by Eric Larocca (this was recently republished in a collection o have not read, so cannot speak to the other things included in it) 3. Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman (you’ve gotta trust me on this one - it’s long but man can this boi write an ending) 4. Salt Slow by Julia Armfield (technically not horror, but if you loved OWUTS you’ll like this too) 5. Out There by Kate Folk (also not horror, but man these short stories have stayed in my brain forever)

I haven't read a lot of these books but I'm thinking maybe character driven stories are a common theme? Something that is exploring a person and their history or struggles along side the plot. Maybe also books with more subtlety? Like not necessarily leaving things unanswered but allowing you to take certain degrees of knowledge and learning from the story. I actually immediately thought The Last Tale of the Flower Bride as a book written in a style that I'm thinking of!

My theory for what your favorites have in common lol (disclaimer I haven’t read any of them I’ve just watched other people read and describe them on YT😅) One thing is short, like novellas. So if they’re not novellas they need to hold your attention and not drag Two, small cast of characters . Characters need to have a purpose, some meaning to be in there Three, a deeper message being told through the horror genre. Our wives under the sea has a core theme of grief. Dowry of blood- finding strength to leave toxic relationship I think? Best friends exorcism- friendship. Bird box- a woman’s journey in strength and motherhood (one of the things I love about the movie is how you don’t see the monsters bc that was never the POINT, the movie is about her journey as a mother, not sure how similar to book it is)

Okay I gotta recommend Suffer the Children by Craig DiLouie. I know it’s talked about a lot on booktube. I absolutely loved it. The biggest complaint I’ve seen is that parents wouldn’t do that. As a parent I can say I absolutely would..you go through the grief of losing your kid and they come back?? Of course you would. They’re probably the only people in this world you’d do anything for. The author did a great job at building the world, he thought of so much, and it didn’t get the middle of the book lull that so many do.

Since you read Foe and I'm Thinking of Ending Things, I personally enjoy We Spread much more than the latter. I think Pet Semetary appeals to the people who have read a lot of Stephen King and didn't like most of it. This, in my opinion, his his best crafted novel as far as pacing and length and the fact that he doesn't go on long rambling tangents. This is also one of his earlier works so he had to listen to his editors. I think once he really made it.... nothing got cut and it shows. I don't actually know. This is just my theory.
