After months of waiting and months of me procrastinating, I am finally here to provide my ranking for all 9Twists in the Saw series. Saw is very personal to me and a series I hold close to my heart, it's what introduced me to the world of horror and my love of film making started with the original film from 2004. So naturally, I am thrilled the series is still going 17 years later.
After Spirals release in May 2021, we now have 9 Twist Endings within the series and I am now here to provide my ranking. Here is my ranking of every twist in the Saw Series from Saw to Spiral.

Might be unpopular, but I like the way they revealed the twist in Jigsaw. Halloran noticing his lasers charred the roof above him, but Logan's didn't, followed by Logan rising up is actually kinda cool.
@PatrickBurow

I do agree with this. The subtly and the reveal is drawn out but in an effective way, but unfortunately doesn’t have a home run when the reveal carries on with its plot holes and timeline errors. While an effective reveal, the twist itself unfortunately makes little sense and has zero impact on the film, the rest of the series and is more confusing and dull then memorable no matter how effectively it is revealed.

@@PatrickBurow It's not quite as confusing when you do some math. John Kramer kidnapped Cecil on the Year of the Pig - 1995 being the closest one to the events of Saw- and had a career up to his death in 2006 (yes, he survived a full decade with terminal cancer- guess he wasn't lying about being able to afford that experimental cancer treatment in 6). He only gained notoriety in the mid-2000s when his games started getting discovered and he began attacking police officers and detectives that came after him. Logan is one of the 90s victims. We can presume the footage of modern day technology is from the present-day game to obscure the timeline- we actually never see the flatscreens and the past characters at the same time. Logan did help Kramer early on in his career (not as far back as Cecil, but close), until he left in 2001/2 to serve as a war doctor in Afghanistan. This is explicitly mentioned. So he was actually overseas during the events of all the previous Saw films and couldn't be helping Kramer during that period

I agree that they should've saved that opening scene of Dr. Gordon until the big reveal at the end. However, I don't mind keeping the church survivors meeting scene, with a few changes. Rather than revealing Dr. Gordon out of the open, have Gordon stay within the shadows, and maybe change his voice a bit, which doesn't make it sound like him.

Fun Fact: Dr Gordon was actually supposed to return for Saw III. But, of course, he sued his own management firm for his 1% compensation from Saw. My thoughts are his return in Saw III would've led to numerous appearances in later films. So, because he didn't get paid such a small amount that the firm could've obviously afforded, we never got potential build up to Saw 7's twist.

Was so glad to hear your #2 spot was Saw because Saw 2’s ending is just sublime. “He’s in a safe place” Such a classic Jigsaw move to say exactly what he means but since everyone is so high strung they aren’t thinking about literal meanings.
@lijiahongjordan
@lijiahongjordan 2 года назад
Not just Jigsaw saying "He's in a safe place" that is literal. When he tells Eric Matthews "I want to play a game. The rules are simple, all you have to do is sit here and talk to me. If you do that long enough you will find your son in a safe and secure state." Daniel was not just literally in a safe, but he was in a literal secure state in the safe (wrists tied up and wearing an oxygen mask) as well.

I will admit how obvious the twist in Spiral is for the exact reason you mentioned. I think the reason it didn't bother me as much is because unlike Hoffman and unlike Logan, we actually get a chance to be with the killer post twist for an extended period of time within the movie. It's not just an ending twist, it's a twist that leads to the end. I really dig that. They absolutely should've executed the twist better, but I appreciate that it wasn't the last thing we saw in this film

Saw 2 is definitely the strongest twists for me, and that kind of has me listing it as my favorite Saw movie at this point. My unpopular opinion is that Jigsaw getting up as the dead body in Saw is actually not great. Obviously it was surprising but it really doesn’t change the movie, if the movie ended with Adam listening to the tape and realizing the killer was still out there and the lights shut out with his screaming it would be every bit as impactful, the more I watch it the more I find Jigsaw posing as the corpse to be pretty silly.

@GabeR115
@GabeR115 Год назад
I know this is over a year late but I want to just throw this out there: I think John posing as the corpse is essential to who Jigsaw is. One of the dumbest things about the sequels 4+ is that John is somehow portrayed as still being in control post-mortem. It becomes a main aspect of his character that he must always be in control, even years after he died and it just becomes cheesy later that he somehow had every variable planned out like he’s some sort of omniscient murder god. The twist at the end of Saw demonstrates this character trait of John, the need to always be in control, in a clever way. He was the one who shocked Adam and could tell the poison bit was staged, he had full power over the game the entire time. This is perfectly in-character for him as he likes a front-row seat to his “tests”. It’s the most important establishing piece for Jigsaw in the entire first movie

3D and 3 are honestly really overhated, while yes 3D is a BUNCH of fan service, I think it was really cool, and Gordon and the other people in the pig masks straight up fucking up Hoffman could be seen as a parallel to when both John and Hoffman attacked Paul together if you want to go for a stretch (which I will) For 3, first off it has some really cool traps, the Angel Trap becoming one of the fan favorites so quick similarly to the R. Bear Trap, and while the gore isn't the main thing about the Saw franchise in my opinion, its also where it started getting way more bloody than the 2 other ones that came before it which was cool, and the ending is honestly really sad aswell, I rooted for Amanda in SAW 2 and 3, so her dying like that after she finally realized how much she got manipulated by John was actually heartbreaking

I'm sitting here wondering what would happen if the Saw franchise got a "What If" spinoff, where everyone who got killed in the traps found a way out instead or solved the puzzles, and where the twists could've been something else for each movie, whereever that would be possible (example: Kramer survives the operation in 3, and isn't killed by Jeff, however, Jeff got a taste of what it was like, and becomes the new slow-ass motherfucking apprentice, giving his victims LOADS of time to figure their puzzles out)

I know this is an older video, but I did want to mention that technically there isn't much of a plot hole regarding Logan being Jigsaw's first apprentice or that game being the first he set up. Cecil's test was more of a preliminary test, not much of a real game, especially since the trap broke before it even accomplished anything, plus as far as we know it was never found out about either. As for Logan himself, there's a bit in the film where Halloran looks up his background and you can see that Logan was actually deployed in the Iraq war, then recovering from PTSD in a veteran's hospital, during the events of Saw 1 through Saw 3D. So while he was the first apprentice, he wasn't actually helping for very long before he left. Which would explain why no one knew him, no one spoke about him, and he never came up. That said you do have to pause the film and read to find this out, so it's really easy to miss. Another thing to note about Saw 3D is Technically in Saw 2 you do see the man who is putting the key behind the Venus Flytrap victim's eye limping. Due to this and the surgical precision of some of the traps that happen after the 1st movie, people have been predicting for a while that Gordon both survived and was helping Jigsaw. The reason many saw it coming the moment he showed up in the film is because we had been waiting for that reveal since Saw 2. It's something I imagine was originally planned to be revealed earlier, but due to the exact lawsuit you mentioned, Cary Elwes wasn't willing to reprise the role. So I see it more as a heavily unexplored plotline that almost got left on the bus, before they finally managed to get Cary Elwes back for Saw 3D.

I mostly agree with you exept for Saw V. I would rank it at number 9. Now, I agree when you say it's a good twist but predictable, but for me, the problem lies elsewhere. There is no real plot twist regarding the main story. Strahm gets the confirmation that Hoffmann is the killer and he gets killed in the process. The main appeal with the twists in this franchise, to me at least, is their ability to change previous movies and the course of the next ones (not considering their qualities or lack of). The twist of a trap, no matter how good it is, is immediatlu forgotten in the next movie (knowing the family tree of Will Easton doesn't affect Saw 3D but Jill trying to Kill Hoffmann does). I don't really like Saw 4's twist, same for Jigsaw, but at least there is one PS: that was a longer comment than I expected XD

Jigsaw twist makes sense. Bassicly: John hosted a game during 2003 (most likely) in a barn owned by Jill tuck. There were 5 players, one of them was Logan, then.. you know, John saves him, makes him a follower... But then Logan leaves for the Military (This is the reason why we dont see him from Saw to Saw 3D). Then he comes back in 2016 (13 years after the OG Barn game), and fools the Police by hosting same game like John's.

Saw 2 is just a bigger and more crazy movie than saw. A bigger space (nerve gas house) a bigger plot (a strong cop and trap plot) and most of all a bigger twist (not only having 1, that the game was old footage, not only 2, that the Matthews child was actually safe but 3 that amanda was the next and new apprentice. All of that being said, the first saw movie twist is downright amazing. And the reveal gives me goosebumps everytime. Adam finding the tape on zepps body and then the amazing theme hello zepp plays. And when it gets to its climax, you see someone standing up. The man himself, the host of the game getting up and the absolute fear and confusion on not only adams face but the audience's face. Everything comes together in a minute and then the iconic game over with the door slam. Just perfect 🤌

I'm gonna preface this by saying that Spiral was my first Saw movie unless you count Scary Movie, which...I don't. So I didn't know that dead meant on-screen death. I didn't know the formula. I think I made this argument before for Spiral. The twist isn't about William betraying him. The music doesn't start until Zeke needs to choose between taking down William or saving his dad, which is an uphill battle as we see. William's only goal was to kill Zeke's dad and rid the force of any corruption along the way. The puppet rigging only happened when the target was shot. It was a choice between having him bleed to death or shooting him on sight thinking he's the assailant. My biggest concern is what happened next. Where the fuck do you go after that? Imagine having to explain to the remainder of the police force that you shot the chief over a misunderstanding and that the man who created the trap that caused it was still at large. All the people closest to Zeke were gone and he had nothing to show for it. Because he took on a case that he just couldn't handle.

I agree they should have showed his face but then it's just what the detective assumed happened but didn't actually. And in the flashback they could show what really happened. They made it so obvious that I assumed it was a red herring. But there were other reveals on top of that that I didn't see coming like the fact that he didn't have a family.

I assumed that Saw one would be your choice for best Saw movie twist. I was really surprised to see Saw 2 as number one on your list.

There was a great channel on youtube back in the day called “Dr Gordon is Alive” and after every movie he pointed out 10-15 times per movie that Gordon was involved. They mention him in each film, someone had to have access to that many dirty needles for the needle pit , ect. It was the correct twist but the movie is so awful it overshadowed it. I think my Ranking on just endings alone 1- Saw 2- Saw 2 3- Saw 6 4 - Saw 3D/7 5- Saw 3 6- Jigsaw 7- Saw 4 8- Spiral 9- Saw 5

I really wished that they didn't 'kill' off Shank in Spiral... it gave everything away so early. If they had kept him hostage & 'skinned his arm' and sent it to Zeke as a threat or message, the twist would have had a lot more pay off. We probably would still have been suspicious of Shank and the situation but I definitely think they could have played it into character development for Zeke and his issues having and trusting a partner.

Yeah but I don't think the twist was Schenks reveal as the copycat jigsaw. The real twist was what played out with Zeke trying to rescue his father but actually he set his father up to be killed and it happened almost the same way that zekes partner killed Schenks dad in front of him and then Zeke telling Young Schenk to "shhhh"...when Schenk was going in the elevator he told Zeke to "shhhhh" as zekes father was killed by police. Yes it was obvious who the killer was from the beginning.

To this day i still feel final line in Jigsaw should have been so much better. "I speak for the dead. And the dead... says Game Over." At least then it coulda been a little more serviceable

Same as me, I really love Saw movies since I was a kid. It didn't scare me a lot just a few because it is a very interesting movie! ( especially the bad ones which make no sense or have no reason to do that). I love most of the Saw movies because they are my childhood movies. One thing that is big disappointing is the Spiral, the doll is a pig, not Billy the puppet T_T. Nice video and keep it up!

Leigh Whannell revealed in a recent podcast that in his original script for Saw 3, Dr. Gordon was supposed to keep John Kramer alive (in place of Lynn Denlon), and his wife is grieving over her missing and supposedly dead husband until she receives a package from Jigsaw telling her Dr. Gordon is alive and she'll have to play a game to find him.. but with the lawsuit Cary Elwes couldn't return but I wish we could've seen THAT because it logically makes more sense than Dr. Gordon becoming John's "greatest asset" and would be an amazing book end to the first 3 films.. despite how much I fanboyed over the end of Saw 7 in theaters Link to the podcast: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EpMBPUFbUkQ.html

I honestly think Spiral is pretty good. It's very clumsy getting there, but I like that it doesnt have massive far reaching consequences requiring huge retcons. Its self contained like Saw and Saw 2. It was the first time in a while I actually said 'ohhh shit' when Samuel L Jackson starts getting raised up and framed for the cops to kill.

It would be really cool if we got more movies in the style of Spiral, or even a show that includes stories of stuff like copycat killer etc, and it all could eventually lead up to one bigger reveal

I really like the Hoffman fight scene in the police station in Saw 6 I would say I don’t have a personal list yet of the favorite saw twists however, with the multiple sequels, and the fact that each sequel is relatively, kept at average level of construction compared to other series of movies all, the twist can all be enjoyed.

I agree with almost the entire list, but for me the original twist is the best one...and my honest reason for this is that, although the kid being in the safe surprised me, I believed Amanda was thrown back into the sequel for only one reason from the moment I heard she was in it: to be a part of his team going forward (it's how she spoke about him in the first one that gives it away for me)...just found this channel though and...subscribed ❤

I really disliked the twist in Jigsaw because it's literally overdone before, a lot of movies already did that, "before you, there was me." it's cool in some movies especially if they executed it well but it was already did in some of the Saw movies which really connects at some point but Jigsaw's twist just offer a lot more plothole for me.

In the case of Spiral, the reveal of the killer fell flat due to their obvious portrayal throughout the movie. It might have been more effective if they maintained the killer's overt appearance and even had Zeke suspect him (similar to Agent Perez suspecting Hoffman). The twist could have been enhanced by placing the supposed killer in a trap, leading the audience to think it's a mimic of Amanda in Saw 2 or Hoffman, only to discover that someone else entirely was behind the killings. This approach could have provided a more satisfying twist, in my view

There’s one twist that sort of got looked over from Saw 6 in this video that I feel is important because it impacts how we viewed the ending to Saw 3: the letter Amanda received, which is revealed was written by Hoffman. The note saying that he knows that Amanda was indirectly responsible for the death of John and Jill’s unborn child (she was with Cecil that night and told him to break in the clinic to steal drugs) and tells her to either kill Dr. Denlon or he’ll tell John. That sort of changes things with Saw 3. Maybe Amanda DID change and was only forced to shoot Lynn under duress?

Adam is still alive and I can prove it. In the directors cut of saw we see John telling Amanda to put the shackle on his left leg which she does and we see throughout the movie. The corpse we see in saw 2 and 3d that is supposed to be adam has the shackle on his right leg. And you may be thinking that amanda still suffocated him with the plastic wrap, but she only did it for about 36 seconds which if you were only suffocated for that long you could survive. Also, in every movie after saw 1, we see that pictures of the victim have become very important, and who could have been taking those pictures, adam. So I think Adam is working as an apprentice for jigsaw and we might see that come true in saw x

The impact of the twist in saw 1 is still the biggest for me in the saw series. Probably because it is the first movie. I'm not sure but the other twists did not disappoint me. I love the SAW franchise. Wanna see more. Hope Spiral sequel is good. The twists and traps are definitely the best part of the saw franchise. It might actually be the only good parts of SAW and was able to have a franchise. And John Kramer of course. One of the best villains in horror movie history

Dr gordon being an apprentice of jigsaw was obvious but it wasnt the saw 3d that had fans clued in on and thats saw 2. The key part was in a video we see a hooded figure surgically remove a guys eye put the key behind it and put the eye back indicating the figure had experience in the med field, then if u watch closely the hooded figure was limping which kind of gave it away

I thought the Saw 6 ending/ twist was a banger. After William had to choose who lives and dies with his associates as a result of his corrupt company, he suddenly becomes the victim of that same choice. Saw 6 is one of my favorite movies from the whole series.

I’d argue that for Saw IV, Hoffman being the new apprentice is just a plot point, not a twist. The actual twist is the fact that it’s at the same time as Saw III like you said so I think I deserved to get a higher rank cuz that twist was brilliant.

I feel like Jigsaw (2017) would've worked better if it went the prequel route at seeing a young John Kramer in his early days when he was younger and alive where we seeing his uprising to becoming the Jigsaw Killer through out the franchise.

For me the main thing about the game in Jigsaw being the "First" game is that only John really knew about Cecil, and it might have also been the first GROUP game. As for the cops not finding it, that's just a plot hole. That being said, I actually thought Jigsaw was better than Spiral as a movie, and in your rankings I would have traded their places. Something about Spiral just made me feel like it was lesser to the other SAW films as a SAW film. Partly because as someone who's great at picking twists in horror movies, I didn't pick that one!
