Something I find extremely interesting about the eye vacuum trap is how the traps are depicted in John's mind. John isn't imagining someone beating one of his traps and coming away with a better outlook on life like he always says is his goal with the traps. Instead he's imagining someone losing and dying in a gruesome way from his trap To me, it almost feels like an attempt to give an extra layer of character to John, instead of genuinely wanting to help people, he deep down, actually wants the victims to fail. However he justifies it within his own mind by convincing himself he's doing it to help people. It could be why he latched onto Amanda so strongly, because it validated his delusion
@adhirg
@adhirg 8 месяцев назад
to me it was more that John had already judged the man as guilty in his head. I don’t think that it meant John secretly wants all of his victims to fail, just that he’s extremely quick to judge people and has the lowest view of people possible.

Personal opinion but I 100% think that the mask should've opened after Mateo got killed allowing us to see the horrifying aftermath. It's the only thing holding it back and as someone with a fear of burning it really would've worked for me. Some people have pointed out that it's somewhat based on the cut waffle iron trap from Saw 2.

Although I would like to see the aftermath too… but in my opinion I preferred the direction they went with. I liked the shot of the lights going out whilst leaving Matao masked. Giving it this ominous effect. It was very chilling. It’s the imagination and not revealing the aftermath that makes it work so well imo. 😁 I would allow it though… if someone later, not straight after the trap, saw Matao’s body and pried open the mask and discovered his disfigured face. This person being a detective or something idk. This could be a sequel thing, where it could be a police investigation of the events of Saw X. I don’t think it would make sense if the mask opened up straight after. It’s like it’s locking him up “forever”. If it opened up after it would purely be shock value for the audience… but we’re talking about Saw, shock value is a common and isn’t necessarily a bad thing lol.

For me, it is the best trap of the film, partly BECAUSE it is only John's fantasy. Discovering that it was only in John's mind surprised me and subverted my expectations in a cool and pleasant way, making me understand that this film attempts something new and fresh. This scene (with its introduction and John's epic line "Good choice" at the end) feels unique and adds a new layer to the whole "traps" concept.
@fionna_cool_girl

I mean we literally see him start to steal some of the person's items. If John hadn't seen him, he would've swiped them and probably did it to multiple people before. Behavior like that doesn't come from nowhere. Obviously it's not the worst thing someone can do to be put in a trap, but stealing from vulnerable patients is all kinds of fucked up.

@FTZPLTC

Gotta say, something that bugged me with the traps in this movie is that two of them - the brain surgery and cheesewire traps - are only really lost because of the time limit. Like, "hey, I know you cut your own leg off, but you didn't hoover quite enough bone marrow out of the stump in time, therefore you don't appreciate life". I get why they do it but it still feels kinda cheap when someone would've won their game if they had, like, 10 extra seconds. (Also I did think Gabriela was just going to whip the hammer at the radiation machine. That would've been kinda awesome.)
@darthmeticulous6901

@FTZPLTC
@FTZPLTC 8 месяцев назад
@@darthmeticulous6901 - Yeah, I know it's something the Saw movies started doing but I definitely preferred the traps when they had longer time limits and you could actually get into people's hesitation and discomfort with what they were being told to do. Dr Gordon had a whole hour to decide whether kill Adam or to hack off his foot, after all.
@darthmeticulous6901
@darthmeticulous6901 8 месяцев назад
@@FTZPLTC Actually, he had several hours. It started at I believe it was midnight and ended at 6am. So he had more than one hour. But I do see your point. What I wanted to get at was that the 3 minutes for their traps seemed like they had enough time. But there is one thing to consider… that 3-minute time limit for Mateo, Diego, and Valentina was more generous than the 1-minute time limits for Michael (the Death Mask), Ivan (the Bedroom Trap), Simone & Eddie (Pound of Flesh Trap), or Evan (the Horsepower Trap) to name a few. Yeah, the longer time limits do add more mental torment, but to me there were far worse time limits in other traps that required equally painful solutions.

The Jiggly Saw trap is arguably a top 3 all time for me just because of how much goes into play. Between the close ups of the saw digging into Valentina's leg, and then just the bone marrow suctioning out in graphic detail, it made me so squeamish. I know not everyone will agree with me, but the impact it had on me alone has it on par with Timothy Young

The brain surgery one is interesting because of Mateo's short hesitation to pull out the brain piece at the end - it really shows he had no understanding of medical practices because if he did, he wouldve known that the brain has no pain receptors and wouldn't of hesitated to pull it out, and maybe those few seconds could've changed the outcome

Also how would Amanda even explain to the hospital what happened. Lol

The gas chamber trap can be beaten the exact same way as the bloodboarding trap- by taking turns. It's just much better at hiding that fact, is much more painful, and allows the players to attack each other directly. It can also be beaten by pissing on a scrap of cloth and breathing through that, as they discovered in WW1. But the point is that neither of them thought of saving each other.

I think the gas and bloodboarding trap have the same concept to test just how loyal Parker was if he was really willing to die for Cecilia and Cecilia to see if she truly would cast aside her selfish tendencies because both traps are very survivable it is shown that the two can survive in the gas for quite some time it doesn't actually kill either of them being stabbed killed Parker I think if they would have taken turns putting their heads in the holes they could have both survived the gas one is just a much more painful version of it because well they broke the rules also a sad irony is that if amanda didnt try to save Gabriella she would have probably lived because if she had gone before mateo she would have gotten the treatment she needed instead of being killed by Cecilia because parker doesnt break Cecilia out till later

I really loved the pipe bomb trap. The simplicity played to its advantage and the gore was great, also love it when someone actually survives a trap. Valentina got the shittiest end of the stick by far. Almost raped before being kidnapped by Jigsaw, gets put in the most brutal trap in the movie, and then has her body completely mutilated after her death in which she was mere seconds away from surviving.

I have a bit of a theory - John is so meticulate in his planning and thinks all the possibilities through that something stood out to me to think he had already considered the possibility of the boy (Carlos) being roped into the whole scenario at some point. John and amanda a few times made comments about the time, John I think even said "we have to hurry, it's almost morning" and the clock said 4am/5am somewhere around there. John knew that Carlos hung around the warehouse in the mornings, since he met him once when he arrived kicking the ball in the morning, and then fixing his bike really early in the morning to wake John up before surgery - probably around 5am. It made me think "it's almost morning" was a "the boy will be near soon, we don't want him around, let's hurry". Why else would they care about the time of day specifically - nobody else would be coming to the warehouse any time soon, especially as it was even cleared out and anyone else involved in the scam would not have needed to return and just moved to the next one. If it weren't for the fact this event happened before John realised it was a scam (although judging by how shady the operation was, he may of considered it a possibility but ignored it for the sake of hope), another part would have struck me for this theory. Though relevant to fixing the bike, the only word John was interested in learning from Carlos was "pull", which so happened to be the core mechanic to the only trap the boy may have been pulled into later. There was nothing that would have really needed him to learn to say "pull" in Spanish just to show that he was pulling to fix the wheel. I know it was a cute and nice thing to learn, but it seemed to me to be too deliberate that he wanted to learn that word specifically, and not any others, and possibly build that bit of trust so that Carlos would listen to him later if needed. Maybe he used that active imagination of his and daydreamed this whole thing even being a possibility... Who knows, it is John after all! Loved the film, one of the only films I've gone to see twice :)

In regards to the gas trap, I don't have much of a problem with it being a "someone has to die". In large part because if they had played by the rules, they wouldn't have ended up in that trap. It was a punishment, where you still had a chance. I also feel that it was possible for both to survive had they took turns sticking their heads out. Obviously we can't know for sure, because we don't know what the gas was, but it's a possibility at least.

Our lists are very similar! The only difference is the ordering of our top 3-mine being brain surgery > gigli > pipe bombs-but I see and admire your passion about each of these traps. Honestly I *might* end up preferring the gigli saw over the brain surgery trap, but seeing the waffle-iron mask idea from the Saw ii days being used made me really happy. It goes without saying that Valentina got it the absolute worst out of all of them, though. Paulette Hernández fucking nailed her role, that "OH MY GOD" she let out when she made the initial cut reminded me of The Rack from Saw iii. For Gabrielle's' trap, I had the same idea of breaking the ankle 1st instead of the wrist. My logic was that it'd be preferable to swing out the way than plummet to the ground and possibly land on my broken ankle. No one in that trap could anticipate the radiation machine being able to move to match the Player's position. I think it was an interesting little twist to catch you off guard cuz John always works to anticipate what someone will do as their 1st option

I think an interesting detail is how Cecilia sabotages everybody else's traps with bad tips. For example, she teaches Valentina the wrong way to use the gigli saw (in real life, you could easily amputate a limb in 30 seconds with the right technique) and Gabriela's as well. She might have done it intentionally or not, but it's a nice little detail about her perverse character.

I found the brain surgery trap so terrifying because, even if I survived it, the removal of my brain could entirely change who I am as a human being. I can't think of any other Saw traps that would permanently affect your PERSON, not just your BODY (possible exception of the hot wax/ spinal cord trap in Spiral?). It would suck, but I could live without my leg, or my eye, or my teeth, or what have you. But our brains make us who we are.

9:30 I understand that in Saw X they want to show John Kramer as someone who would never hurt children (or put them in a trap), but it is a little in contradiction with what is presented in Saw, where Gordon's innocent wife and daughter are being held captive by Zepp (who is supposed to KILL them both if Gordon fails his test...). I personally appreciate Saw X a lot, but let's be honest, the movie proposes a sort of reinterpretation of John Kramer as a character (at least, if we compare it to how he is portrayed in the original Saw). Saw X makes Kramer's morals much "cleaner" than what they are supposed to be (based on our knowledge of previous movies).

So, I just watched the official release on Amazon, and with subtitles on, there was a line of dialogue during the wire saw trap I never noticed in the theater that makes NO sense unless the order of traps was originally different. Mateo encourages Valentina by saying "If Diego could do this, you can do this." Was Diego originally supposed to do his trap in front of them? Did Diego tell them he was in a Jigsaw trap or did they somehow find out he was, and if so then why are they so shocked they are there? Did they actually perform surgeries like amputations on one of their victims? Is there a deleted scene where John tells them Diego was tested and that's how he found them and they just didn't edit out this line? I'm so confused by it but kinda fascinated by it at the same time lolol

My understanding of the blood boarding trap was that if Parker never interfered and "followed the rules" then the blood boarding trap would've activated with only Cecilia attached to it and she would've been allowed to just lay down while the blood poured on the empty side, however John and Amanda planned for the likelihood that they would be forced into the trap. This fits better in my head because I've never liked the idea of competition traps it seems to go against everything John stands for. So I believe that Cecilia and Parker both could've lived as long as Parker followed the rules

Another excellent video, Patrick! My ranking is the same as yours. * And to those who say the brain surgery trap is unbeatable, they're wrong. In fact, I know a way for Mateo to survive without ever opening up his head. Obviously, John and Amanda are there watching everything. You're going to have to play it straight regardless. But, in and of itself, there is a way for Mateo to survive without touching a scalpel or a bonesaw. * Opening up your head and taking out your brain matter is only one half of this trap. The other half is to allow the enzymes to dissolve the brain matter, and connect a current between the two electrodes in the beaker, right? I had to reach back into my chemistry days in high school for the answer to this... A solution will not conduct a current if it is a neutral or basic solution. There's no charge, no negative ions, that will allow electricity to flow between the two electrodes inside it. It has to have a pH of 7 to 14. The enzyme in the beaker is supposed to dissolve brain matter, introducing the chemical makeup of the brain matter into the solution, and changing the pH of it. That's how the current is conducted, and how the voltage directed toward the unlocking mechanism is increased. You can insert the brain matter, and it works. However, Another way to decrease the basic nature of the enzyme, and decrease its pH to make it more acidic (causing more negative ions to react, and allowing more current flow) is to insert something that is highly acidic into it. In this trap, Mateo has access to one of the most acidic substances alive, and he doesn't even know it. * Somehow, someway, he would need to make himself throw up. Stomach acid can have a pH of 1 to 3. At its best, stomach acid is almost as acidic and corrosive as battery acid. It's also highly conductive for electricity. That would very quickly change the pH of the solution, and unlock the box. There is a pan containing scalpels and other instruments on the tray. If he took all of them out, dump out any solutions that are in there, and somehow make himself throw up, he can collect it in the pan and put it in the enzyme beaker. * Neat, huh? As far as I know, I'm the only one that's figured that out. 😅

I'm not the smartest when it comes to gas and poison and all that. But maybe you could beat the gas chamber trap with two people just sharing the whole until the door opens? Kinda like how the blood boarding trap was meant to take turns until the blood runs out over and over. Both traps revolve around sharing the pain and holding your breath so the other can take their turn.

My Ranking 8 - Mid Credits just becasue we don't see what happens nor what the test actually is. 7 - Gas Control Room. A great twist and reveal, but this trap was pretty boring and underwhelming. Gas is probably my least favourite form of punishment, and as you say its just a fight to the death. Given how cunning and personal Cecila got, this could have been so much better. 6 - Radiation Trap. A great concept, executed pretty well. However I've seen people bash their wrists and ankles to a pulp to escape shackles too many times in this franschise. Big points for the geniunley comedic beat of the machine just moving to contiue to radiate Gabriella. 5 - Bloodboarding Great visuals, and seeing Jigsaw in a trap great, even though it kinda had zero stakes. The best part for me is the kid getting involved. Was refreshing to see nobility and heroism in a saw trap instead of selfishness and competition, especially after rewatching the rest of the series. 4 - Eye Vaccum Agree with everything you say here. My only nitpick is that the fingers being pulled back could have been a lot more brutal and cringeworthy. Some more visceral sounds and maybe some blood under the skin of the palms or something. 3 - Brain Surgery Great visuals, great and well balanced stakes. Best of both worlds in terms of gore, as the test gets completed but runs out of time so the punishment is also seen. Love the closed mask, kinda wish we had just slightly more idea of the final state of his face after it gets toasted. 2 - Bone Marrow One of the best in the series. Nails the cringeworthy viscera that Saw thrives on. Its also incredibly simple. Also we FINALLY got a decent looking beheading. 1 - Pipe Bomb Great gore, simple concept, love how unpolished and improvised it looks with the taped up hands. Also so great to see the aftermath of someone who isnt a main character survive a trap. One of the best in the series, feels very original SAW. Just would have loved to see Diego post recovery and whether he was 'rehabilitated' or not.

Love your list, Patrick. I actually have the brain surgery trap lower personally because while I love the gore, the end result was so disappointing for me for how much I was looking forward to it. My three favorites are the eye vacuum, pipe bomb trap, and the bone marrow trap, in that order. The bone marrow/jiggly saw trap is so disturbing and disgusting and made me genuinely nauseated. That sets a high bar for me.

Here is my ranking list for the traps. I did not include the post-credits because I did not see the entire trap, but it was really cool. 7) Nerve Gas Room - Extremely disappointing. The twist itself was amazing, but it relied so heavily on 4D chess and a lapse of judgment. Not only that, but the execution of the trap itself bored me. Just Dr. Pederson and Parker fighting each other like amateurs. Trash-tier trap. 6) Bloodboarding - We already know that John survives, and movie producers would never kill a child on-screen, and the trap itself did not entertain me. Waterboarding is great as a torture method, but it doesn't work with the involved protagonists, and there wasn't anyone dying from it. 5) Radiation - I just didn't find it that entertaining. I was rooting for Gabriella the whole time, but that is all that really carried the trap. Well below average for Saw standards, but not terrible objectively. 4) Brain Surgery - From a well-below average trap to some of the standouts in the entire series! What honestly ruined this trap for me is the character/victim. Mateo was extremely exhausting and monotonous. No depth to him. Just constantly crying for help and waiting HALFWAY through the trap to get started. The trap itself is extremely clever and sick to watch. I'm just not sold on Mateo tearing part of his cerebral cortex away, as it wouldn't cause any pain and he was barely physically affected by it, but I know these movies aren't meant to appeal specifically to people with an interest in medicine. Still an awesome time. 3) Eye Vacuum - Yes, it's easier to break your fingers compared to many other traps in the series, but you have to do it 5x in a row and can't do them all it once. The cinematography and ambiance for this trap are also amazing. Not to mention how disturbing it is to see the janitor's eyes ripped out. 2) Pipe Bombs - This ranking and the top one both share something in common: the deeply psychological nature of John and how it plays into my enjoyment of the trap. Diego panicking was far more enjoyable than Mateo doing it. Diego was very dynamic in how he went about it. I love how he tried reasoning, stabbing John through the window, and running down the stairs then doing that shrugging type of expression at John like he's supposed to save him. When he actually committed to the trap, the violence delivered effectively. It made me, my sister, and my dad wince. I'm desensitized to violence, so it's pretty impressive that I was disturbed by Diego cutting through his arms. This was such an intense scene for many reasons, and I put it high on my list of traps in the entire series. 1) Bone Marrow - This might make my top 5 of all time. They really did an amazing job building up to the trap. John made it clear how personal it was and that he was not fooling around. The panicking worked extremely well in this trap too. Val was the first of those in the room together to get tested, so nobody knew what to expect. When she started to get to work, wow, was that graphic. Don't know how, but it sold me even harder than The Rack. My knowledge about the femur and the way blood pooled from the limb as Val sawed through it made the scene challenging to watch. It didn't even stop there. I was getting anxious while watching the bone marrow spilling onto the scale. After the sacrifice Val made, as much as I did not like her as a character/person, I found myself wanting her to survive. They made a very hateable character appear semi-redeemable. She cut it so close. I wasn't 110% certain if she would actually make it, so hearing the music intensify and watching the scale made the trap all the more exhilarating. I won't be forgetting this scene anytime soon.

Since you seem to know some medicine I would like to ask something regarding the bone marrow trap: do you know if the torniquet would be enough to stop her from bleeding out or would she die before they had the time to give her proper medical attention? It's a pretty big artery being severed after all :/

There honestly is a way to cheese Mateo's trap Before the start, get one of the other people to ask for Valentina's head back as a way to say goodbye, since she was their coworker and they never got to give a proper farewell Once the head's left, get your friend to throw it to you, and get the brain matter from it

Everyone speculates Cecilia survives at the end of the movie but I highly doubt she does. She can't break the glass and the door is sealed shut behind them. So how does she get out ? I think she rots in that room and the room becomes her tomb. Just like Adam, just like Daniels dad and just like Hoffman. In a sense I would have rather been Parker and get killed right away then die a slow death in that room

I was literally so sure that there was no fkn way that he was making it out of that pipe bomb trap. When he started looking for an escape and running about I was like oh jesus- I thought at best he’d save one arm but the other bomb would blow up. Props to him- I was truly not expecting him to beat it. I feel like Valentina’s trap was maybe one of the hardest in franchise history. It took so long to cut off her leg, bit by bit through bone and all. That should have been enough. The bone marrow situation was too frustrating for me, but I understand why it happened etc. I liked how poetic most of these traps were. Like Cecelia supposedly drowning in the blood that is on her hands. The vacuum for the janitor. The radiation for the fake survivor. Fell flat at the end and some of the execution (pardon the pun) wasn’t my fav but it’s a movie that left me so so so happy for the revival of the franchise so essentially they did the impossible. They saved Saw

The radiation trap, 1 thing 2 remember: if shes opioid dependant aka 'drug addict', shes gonna be in some stage of withdrawl. N trust me, in such a state u cant think right period. So if John didnt take that into account, itd b easy 4 the trap 2 b unfair, unintentionaly. I havent seen saw x yet, but watched reviews cuz im too excited. When i see movie, i'll be able 2 say how reasonable or not trap was! Love your videos, as always. Thanks!

I’m not even a big fan of the franchise but the trap with the bombs on the guy’s arms was perfectly shot in my opinion. Jigsaw in person towering over him and looking through the window, kicking the 2nd explosive at the last second, the explosion itself and he survives it which was a nice touch too. Best saw trap I’ve seen! Good movie too.

SPOILERS IN THIS COMMENT I have to see the movie a second time for a better opinion, but Valentina not making it actually annoyed me in the theater. Like you said, she demonstrated the will to live that John is looking for and being the first in the room to attempt her test, hesitation is the most understandable for her. Shoving the bone marrow extractor in there made me wince harder than anything else in the movie and because she took this like a champ, I think she should have lived. Mateo though, not so much. After seeing Valentina be brutally punished for hesitation, he hesitates LONGER than her. He should not have been that stupid if he wanted to live

@9:50 "he won't hurt children." Diana in Saw 1 seemed to be very much in danger of Zepp. Need to do some mental gymnastics like "oh well the rest of Zepp's tape we never hear says that you need to only use crappy rope to tie them up...then leave them alone for 8 hours....then let them escape" to believe that John wasnt about to let a child die.

The interesting think about the brain surgery trap is that it was the one out of this movie I would least want to do just for the sheer intimidating nature of digging around in your brain. It wasn't the pain thing that was such a mind fuck (no pun intended).

In Gabriela's trap I do feel that John would have planned for her to break her arm first, as he planned it when she broke her leg. Maybe the chain would have wound in order to pin her in a place so she couldnt have moved away from the radiation or something similar. I just don't see John letting a subject get a "safe place" in the middle of the game.

15:18 honestly, there is one positive to this You could pull a Bobby Degan and climb up the arm cuff to... something on the ceiling (maybe a support) and climb out of the way, only needing to break your ankle. Maybe you could even break the chain while you're up there

I put mateos first cause the mask that burns his face reminds me of the Venus fly trap design… the blood boarding for me is last cause if John thought it was gonna be used for him and Amanda I think it was fake blood like what was used in setting up the bathroom trap

The end credits trap I just imagine that is a lapse in judgement early on for John where he doesn’t give him a chance. Being it’s with Hoffman that moment could be what kind of pushed Hoffman into that realm and away from the entire moral principle of the game, throughout the series there are traps and moments where people are not given a chance at survival, and those moments are mostly Amanda’s and Hoffmanns. Amanda didn’t want to test Gabriela and ultimately she dies at the hand of the mastermind, that could be why some of her traps are not fair, hoffman is just off the rails psychotic and that moment could’ve been all the justification he needed to do what he did with his future traps.
