What I find funny is how badly Armstrong uses excelsus, he literally is able to deploy Gekkos and such with it, but instead of just throwing tons of them out, he throws two at a time and uses them in conjunction with lasers that kill them.
@@metalgearstudy Actually, I doubt so. The reason for this is that armstrong's nanomachines seem to get their strength from absorbing other machines. Absorbing the excelsius before even using it is just a huge waste of resources.
I think it was because the Marines had very high expectations of RAY’s performance on the battlefield, making Ocelot believe that he had an advantage against Snake when he was piloting REX in MGS4, but, to state the motto: Quality over Quantity.
They all weirdly lack any real anti air capabilities, you'd think they'd be sitting ducks for jets. I completely agree that Rex is the best 1 on 1 though.
I think in 3 or peace walker the idea is to launch the nuke and move the unit as fast as you can. At making a bipedal tank it can be move to any type of terrain. That's the idea. Now if that is possible or even realistic is at the same level of disbelieve as the silliness of the franchise
Railgun itself is an ultimate AA and almost all metal gear have it In a fictional world where metal gear can fire rail gun rapidly without any drawback, no jet can survive
@@virgindeadgirl7333 A railgun needs direct line of sight in order to hit a moving target whereas jets can fire missiles from over the horizon, it'd also need to be able to pivot really quickly to shoot down missiles.
@@virgindeadgirl7333 You're the one suggesting a railgun is an "ultimate AA" but apparently I'm being farcical for suggesting that you'd need to spin around quickly to target missiles coming in at a couple thousand miles an hour. Forgive me for entertaining your misguided idea
For a near final boss, it always seemed like the game made MGE look much stronger than it really is. Sure it’s a cool concept and it’s HUGE, but it lacks mobility entirely and is restricted to specific scenarios where’s its weapons could actually be effective.
It mostly comes to Metal Gears being obsolete in MGR's timeline, so Excelsus was made as just another tank and not a massive threat as the previous ones.
Shame that Excelsus is the worst of the Metal Gears. It’s my favorite looking Mech, like a robotic arthropod, and it’s gigantic! If only it were more mobile and had much more weaponry. Collective Consciousness is a banger though!
Like the codex said. Excelsus was made primarily to bulldoze urban areas and overpower cyborgs since cyborgs are the big trend going on in MGR as a single cyborg manage to kill a ray. Heck even a brazilian samurai that was barely a cyborg could kill one. But alas, excelsus was no match for raiden's anime powers.
My personal favourite is Sahelanthropus. In my first encounter it looked absolutely terrifying yet still badass, and to this day out of all the Metal Gear unit noises Sahelanthropus has the most bone-chilling roar. Save for Geckos, the moos are just horrifying
I want to call Sahelantropus my favorite, but its "Rex head" stops me from really liking it; If it had a different head, it would really be my favorite metal gear.
Remember rex in mgs1 was destroyed or severely damaged at least and left to rust til mgs4 somehow a barely operational and decade old mg can beat a brand new mg
Great list. I was thinking the 4 legged "peacewalker" should also be on the list for its nuclear capabilities, unless if i missed something, as i havent played the game fully
Thank you. Unfortunately it's not technically a 'Metal Gear' so I left it off, like Shagohod, Arsenal etc. Maybe I should do a non-Metal Gear mech list.
It's not the 2 legged/4 legged thing. It's just not classed as a Metal Gear unit in the series. Although I agree it basically is a Metal Gear. I believe its due to it only being able to use a Nuke in retaliation (it has to be fed data to target against it).
Can we all take a moment to question why some of the metal gears roar? Is it to scare their enemies I mean seriously why does It roar?! I've been questioning that for a long time, same with Rex's and (the one I can't spell)'s cock Cannons
@@sneakysnuck8481 Just a convenient place to put it. It's protected by the armor from aerial attacks, and is at the right angle to attack small target on ground like Snake.
I think Doktor states the best thing it has going for it is ‘shock and awe’ but it’s such an impractical design that it’s size and slow speed would be an easy target for air attacks and artillery. Not to mention it can only attack targets from the front making easy to outflank.
Sahelanthropus could’ve been Rex but better if it was able to fire a nuke from its railgun. Hell it even has two stances, it’s simple combat stance and it’s artillery stance which perfectly mimics Rex’s position
I would work on a way to make the Metal Gear unite into one: The Shagohod, RAXA, GW Pupa 5000, TJ Chrysalis 6000, TR Cocoon 7000, AL Basilisk 8000 aka Peace Walker, ZEKE, Sahelanthropus, REX, RAY (Modified), & EXCELSUS. Imagine it all merge into one Giant. I would want to be in the cockpit of a those Giants. With all that Weaponry packed into one Package, it be unstoppable.
Metal Gear GRANIN, the Metal Gear to surpass all other Metal Gears, including all other weapons, named after the brain father of the mechs to give it the full circle treatment. The Perfect Weapon.
You know what logical addition Rex needed? Viewports. The Radome is easily disabled with chaff (though in Metal Gear chaff basically works like EMP) leaving the pilot blind. Rather than having to open the entire cockpit which completely exposed the pilot, it needed bulletproof viewports, like every tank since before WW2 has had.
Very late but worth noting, as stated in game when rex fires a nuclear weapon there's no propellant trail from a rocket or missile, it can't be detected on radar either. A completely invisible nuclear weapon. Pretty terrifying to be honest which is probably why he's my favourite. (Aside from the whole dinosaur with a laser Johnson gag.)
If you think excelsus is week remember that it was RAIDEN that took it down not snake and the beam weapons seem pretty eficiente enough to take out air units so other misiles and guns would be rendered obsolete
Not necessarily guns are more flexible, and so are missiles. Exelsus' main two plasma guns take a long time to rotate. Missiles can home and guns are very well suited to small targets, however cyborgs seemingly render guns useless in a battle (as shown by pretty much any cyborg using or having a sword, the fact that in revengeance Raiden barely takes damage from bullets and lastly, there is a cutscene where a bullet bounces of Raiden's armor. To compare, Raiden can get empaled by an HF sword very easily, as shown before the monsoon fight). And in fact, I'm pretty sure Exelsus doesn't have guns. It does store a lot of gekko though, which wasn't mentionned. Overall, it deserved a better spot in the tierlist : It was a design means for mass production, compared to the protypes/unfinished metal gears like TX-55.
Actually the MG Excelsius was made as a response to the prevalence of cyborg soldiers in the battlefield. It's an arms race thing. Ray's were made to kill Rexes, and early cyborgs were made to work around Rays in tighter urban environments, Gekkos were made to hunt them, but cyborg tech improved and they became good enough to kill Ray's and gekkos, so the Exelsius was designed to bulldoze urban urban landscapes literally levelling the playing field against cyborgs which forced them into the open, and made them open to attacks from the giant plasma blades cannons, and swarms of gekkos that could be rapidly deployed from inside. The only reason Raiden could fight it was because he was at the time probably the most advanced cyborg on the planet, and it was being piloted by... Well, a man who probably didn't know how to use it as well as it could have been used.
Just a little note, MG Excelsus and MG Ray can be equipped with a nuclear weapons, they just did have them whilst fighting Raiden which, in my opinion, places Excelsus in 7th and Ray in 2nd
And it's stated that Excelsus' model is not designed for nuclear armaments. It is mainly focused for digging (retractable blades) and it's (plasma cannons) are for destroying streets. Going well with Armstrong's War on Terror.
@@minecraftperson8412/videos I mean, you could just strap REX's rail gun to it and BOOM, it's nuke-capable. In fact, that's what happened to Rex in the first place! Otacon thought he was just putting together a cool bipedal tank, not an undetectable nuclear launch platform.
I would love to see a video about the evolution of metal gear ray, ive never seen any on youtube and it would be so cool to see you make it, only if you want to ofc
Sahel weakness: - cockpit was not designed to be manned by adults - it cannot go autopilot and be move with the use of an AI, because it was not perfected back then - It needed a "bizarre phenomena" for it move without a pilot, hence , a young Psycho Mantis controlling it - its general construction was not heavily fortified, with depleted uranium composing its armor material - It cannot launch a nuclear strike on a far away target, thus Sahel needs to self destruct in order to trigger a nuclear like explosion Zeke weakness: - A metal gear made from scraps and salvaged parts, for it to fully perform well salvaged parts from war loots are constantly needed to maintain and strengthen it. - It seems Zeke cannot turn on if its power is not 100% - its general construction was not heavily fortified, due to technology back then
Regarding "Weak Feet Syndrome" that makes sense for a Bipedal Tank. Unlike the main body, the Legs need to have some form of mechanism to make the thing more, as well as armour plating. The more plating, the more movement stuff. As well as compensating for the Body, weapons and other assorted things the MG has. Slight Tangent here, but the only MG that shouldn't be vulnerable to such is the RAY, at least in MGR. It's legs in that appear to be more like Cybernetic Muscles, as opposed to the other units that are purely mechanical (Discounting Sahelanthropus, but Phantom Pain's tech is fuckery at best). The legs being the weakest points makes perfect sense for those units, It's the same as the Tracks on a tank. Sure, if we're talking actually blowing it up it might not destroy it entirely, but mobility killing the mobile Nuke Machine is not a bad thing.
Agree , the parts that makes the machine move tend to be the weakest part of the vehicle , tank threads are way weaker than the armor and legs in a walking tank would also be a weak point , thought unlike tank threads you can put armor in the legs directly , but the problem still exist
This is why I love YT. For no apparent reason whatsoever I randomly thought about metal gear, the thought to myself, "I bet metal gear Rex is the greatest metal gear" Then I looked for a video that ranked the metal gears. Thatis why i love YT. If I am likely to think it, there is a high probability that content exists. Superb video by the way
Great video! I think on paper going head to head against each other Ray wins (providing snake and otacon are not operating the opposing metal gear) since it was designed as an anti metal gear. It has the maneuverability and firepower to win against any others. But if they are not going head to head, and you just objectively choose which one has the most destructive potential then i agree it is Rex, since ray doesnt have nuclear abilities.
@@metalgearstudy Yeah, I was going to bring that up but thought it would make the comment too long since it opens up many new topics haha. Raiden isn't a metal gear so it doesnt really mean anything in a metal gear vs metal gear debate. Rays main advantage against other metal gears is speed and maneuverability, and raiden has much more than any metal gear so Ray has lost his advantage straight away against Raiden. But it does open a debate on who is more powerful between Raiden and Grey fox. Because Raiden destroyed a Ray with relative ease, but Grey fox died taking on Rex. So, Is Grey fox underpowered compared to Raiden or is Rex just more effective in dealing with individual small targets? The laser Rex has stopped Grey fox in his tracks when he tried to close in, since unlike Rays mouth water cutter which takes time to charge it strikes instantly. Making it more effective against fast moving targets. And also in mgs2 pre cyborg Raiden took out multiple Rays (AI controlled granted) with ease by exploiting the water cutter weak point, where as Snake struggled against 1 rex in mgs so... AHHH!! there's sooo much to debate ahaha. Thats the great thing about metal gear lore though, so many ways to look at it all! Love what you are doing, keep up the good work!!
@@ursaber Sahelanthropus' design was heavily inspired by a giant, flying mech from a mecha hack-and-slash game Kojima made called Zone of the Enders. Just a fun fact.
#9 MG Gekko This is the lego figure version of Metal gear ray. It's an infantry unit. Barely at all a metal gear, just sort of robotic infantry. Bovine robotic infantry.
3:15 That is.. not very accurate Evidence : Sahelanthropus was an XOF weapon, which means there would be no reason for a child to pilot it, since there are no childs in XOF in the first place.
it was never finished and was meant to accomodate an a.i pod. the head can house a child. Eli goes into it in chapter 2 ( i think ). And it was controlled by psycho mantis when he was a child
I find it funny that Excelcus is the worst Metal Gear, but, it could still destroy the others very easily with its plasma weapons and giant HF blades, or even just by stepping on them, and all the no nuclear Metal Gears such as Ray (not the modded one) would be rendered almost helpless against it
Sorry for my english but in excelsus its depends whos drives because Armstrong is a terrible driver for arrogant, if the Excelsus have a AI he would in a better top.
The definition of a Metal Gear is wild. Which weapon system falls into the category is debatable. Before the "war economy era" it meant a totally different thing than after. You could argue that Peace Walker was indeed a Metal Gear, but if you side with it not being one, then by that logic you also have to discount RAY from being one as well. REX is still the GOAT and you can't change my mind.
Metal gears ranked (by my opinion): 1. Metal Gear Ray 2. Metal Gear Rex 3. TX-55 Metal Gear 4. Metal Gear Excelsus 5. Metal Gear Sahelanthropus 6. Metal Gear D 7. Metal Gear Raxa 8. Metal Gear Zeke
To this day, after playing just about every MG game in the main saga...i still dont know why the metal gears were considered balance tipping weapons. As tactical, next age battletanks, units like the Rays (and Sahelanthropus if it had actually become functional) wouldve been cutting edge battlefield hardware. But as strategic platforms the way the series always portrayed them??...not so much. Any nuke launching capability they had could easily have been deployed on aircraft, naval vessels, or conventional ground craft.
@@metalgearstudy oh, definitely, cool machines. You cant go wrong with battle mechs. I just wish Kojima hadnt tried to hang the gears' value around their strategic qualities....or, that he had built some technological rationale into his alternative world stage that made the metal gear platforms worthy of being considered such a threat to global peace
I'm sorry but Sahalantropous bizarely just made any Metal Gear that came after it seem like ancient obsolete junk, mostly because Kojima just said "f*ck it, let's add Zone of the Enders' mechs in the game" The thing has actual arms ffs
Metal Gear Excelsus looks more like a mining machine. I mean, why would you have that much machinery just to fight something if it’s so slow? It would make sense if you used it alongside another metal gear, or just to excavate large areas.
Yeah, the developers were definitely taking the piss with that. Intentionally so. Can they go one further, beat REX in the sequel using only hand to hand combat.
I just found out MG Kodoque exist in Metal Gear Acid It have a charging beam rather than a rail gun which need the MG to duck in order to shot the beam. Also it have a shield that also acts as a missile launcher
I would ve put Sahelanthropus higher on the list, purely because of the spectacle that it gives by wiping out Xof s forces before the fight with Venom.
Sahalantaphous is combay type more agile nore fast his rail gun can kill anything in one blow his sword can even cut raiden from meatl gear if it hit raiden perfectly
nope kojima himself stated that the game follows a linear power level in which the technology and characters grow stronger with each game in chronological order (venom snake himself even called the tx-55, the ultimate weapon)
I know this wasn't cannon, but out of curiosity, where would Metal Gear Gander rank, as it has 2 railguns, a valcun cannon, a flamethrower, rocket launchers, and flying turrets?
I mean it was originally designed as a version of REX before they landed on the design we got. I'd say second to REX as it can't launch a stealth missile (if I'm remembering correctly) and nearly got taken out by lack of power from the power plant.
Excellcius is technically only a metal gear in name just so they could get sales but it’s not a real metal gear as it has no nuclear capability but that’s just a technicality
Arsenal is clearly the most OP :p several nuclear missiles, control over the nations armed forces and control over the context of all digital information….. or just ya know “nothing more than a gigantic coffin”
i think rex is the best becuse of its simplicity yes a lot of other metal gears surpassed it in a lot of catacorgys but it made heavy use of its main selling point ( not the rail gun) its armor if it wasn't given its character flaw it would be highly hard to beat in the field sersly there's codic call after codic call about its armor and it took what 10 20 years of weapon advancement ( their timeline) to even beat a heavy damaged version?
A lot of it was to do with its nuclear capability and lack of ability once Mantis was removed. Cant be used like the majority of Metal Gears. Maybe I'll revisit the Ranking later in the year with viewer's guidance.
@@metalgearstudy exactly. shagohod was perfect as the first. it would had been more accurate from that to go with the walker gear types like MGSV and then closing the gap with the TX
My number 1 is Ray. Okay he is crushed in all his apparition but hey! MGS2 Raiden was already a very good fighter because he beat/survive Dead Cell (even Snake struggled against Fortune and Vamp). Solidus is literally a cybernetic Big Boss (the exoskeletton give cyborg like abilities just like Sam). MGS4 well Rex is piloted by Snake (someone who can destroy a Metal Gear with only a rocket launcher so of course if you give him better weapons he will crush Metal Gear faster) and had access to surprise CQC move. But i think part thank to fan service because basic MGS fan back then was : MGS1 and 3 good. MGS2 bad. And during MGR Sam is just like Solidus (a skilled man with expended abilities throught exoskeletton and probably nanomachines. Also Murasama is an OP sword). Meanwhile Raiden is could stop Outer Haven so Ray ain't gonna do shit to him. And between us. Sincerely do the others Metal Gear did better? Shagohod : destroyed by a man with a RPG on a motorcycle. Raxxa (from portable ops) and those from Peace Walkers (didn't know much about those games) where destroyed (even if one commited suicide i believe) Sahelanthropus : literally prototype whose full potential can only acheived throught the power of a kid acttracted by negative emotions. It would be a shame should someone very angry and want to destroy us happens to pass by. The Metal Gears from the 2 first game didn't do much either ( the one in MG1 couldn't even move). Rex : millions of dollars worth. Results used to kill a wounded Gray Fox. Get destroyed. Destroy a Ray later but sincerely it could have destroyed by Snake and Raiden themselves. Excelsus : technically the best Metal Gear to date. Designed to crush cyborgs and UGs. Meanwhile : Armstrong : You cannot literally use CQC to stop a Metal Gear, it's will ruin my plan! Raiden (in Ripper mode) : HAHAHA! Excelsus goes bonk bonk! In the end the best "Metal Gear" are the cheap, mass produced one who probably killed more off screen than the super war machines (like Geckos or GRADs). Hence why i think Ray is the best. (Also the fact his design allow 'facial expression' is quite cut. I like how in MGR he kinda look us when we try to squatch a very troublesome bug.) I also came to the conclusion that a giant walking tank is strong but not strong enought to beat a soldier whose codename is Snake (Naked/Big Boss, Venom, Solid, Liquid, Solidus and Raiden). Thought Sam seem to prove an another theory. It has nothing to do with the codename snake but more about being dummy T H I C C. All the person from the list above are dummy T H I C C and were know for messing with Metal Gear.
God, I can't help but imagine if metal gear got a soft reboot, evergreen style, where they did something new with it using similar story arcs. I doubt it'd happen, but it'd be interesting to get a new metal gear storyline from the ground up like that I think.
i think rex and shartinphobis idk how to spell that are the same thing they look so similar i think shartinphobis is a humanoid version of the rex metal gear
