“The 1” will always be my favorite opener because of how it made me feel. Folklore seemingly came out of nowhere. I saw the post on social media Swift made about the album. I was so tired from working 3rd shift but listened anyway. The 1 played and I cried. I was living on my own and my 7 year relationship with my wife was ending. It was like Taylor herself was giving me hug and telling me it was okay. One of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.

This was SO fun. Personally I would rank "the 1" as my second favourite album opener for all of the reasons that you both mentioned and because I think that the lines "you know the greatest films of all time were never made" and "the greatest loves of all time are over now" perfectly encapsulates the world of story telling that we are about to enter. We are exploring all of the "what ifs" and comparing what was to what could be throughout the entire album. For example, in songs like "betty" when she writes "if I showed up at your party, would you have me?" Taylor has questions in her own life which she explores in "the 1" and "my tears ricochet" and she is exploring the many paths and possibilities for characters like Inez, Betty, and James throughout the album.

As a suggestion, a ranking for the best song intros could be cool! Thanks for the video guys ❤️

mine being so low hurts my soul as a speak now stan and a mine stan. its the perfect album opener for me, the way it introduces speak now's story-telling vibe and gives us the more realistic fairytale vibe with lines like "we got bills to pay we got nothing figured out" and "careless man's careful daughter" that carries throughout the entire album. i respect anyone who says sparks fly would make a good album opener though.

I love State of Grace getting recognition. It's one of my favorites from Red.

I Forgot That You Existed is so underrated!!! I think of it like a prologue - it needed to be said before we got onto the main stories on the album. It's probably in my top 5 openers!

The 1 has to be on top for me. Folklore is top 3 for me not 1 but it’s widely thought to be her best album. The 1 captures all that so perfectly. The new sound, a new songwriting form, and the wistful, reflective mood. The 1 captures not just the feeling of the album but the feeling of the WORLD in lockdown. That’s a truly incredible thing and I’m not sure I’ll ever hear a better album opener in my life

I think Midnights is about the in-between phase of the breakdown of a long term relationship, the back and forth of falling in and out of love. Lavender Haze is about honeymoon beginning love and the idea of a haze signifies a sense of clouded false reality, the reality is that two people actually might not be right for each other. She yeans for the haze of the beginning because it's gone now. I think as a song it reflects both sides of the album in that way.

Why do I feel Mine is an album opener just because that album is self written so Taylor was like this 'MINE' anybody else think that?

For me, I Forgot That You Existed is like a prologue, rather than the actual opener. It's the pre-opener. It needed to be there in terms of her autobiographical storyline to bridge Rep into Lover, but it feels separate from the overall concept of Lover. In theatre it'd be like the song that plays before the show starts, rather than the opening number.

To me, "Mine" makes sense as an album opener for two reasons: 1- "Mine" is a more mature or grown-up version of the song "Fearless.". Both songs are a daydream about her idea of love. However, "Mine" is the wiser sister in some ways. It is like a bridge between her previous work and Speak Now, so it works as a natural progression or continuation. 2- I always imagined that "Mine" was one of the last songs written for the album. So, With the hindsight from exploring these different relationships and heartbreaks throughout the album, "Mine" is like her final conclusion or realization of what the ideal relationship would look like in her mind. I used think that Sparks Fly would fit well also as the album opener also, but I came to appreciate the complexity of Mine a little more.

I can’t wait to see you guys rank Taylor’s closing tracks!! It would be so cool if you did like a double ranking? Like the standard album and then another ranking that includes bonus and vault tracks. Especially because some of those tracks really change the vibe of the album as closers (hoax vs the lakes, mastermind vs dear reader vs you’re losing me)

I feel like the 1 is way higher for me not just because i love the song and never wanna skip it, but also because how it ties to cardigan with "choose two girls lose the 1" and i feel like also with most songs on the album. The whole album is about loss and mourning something that you really wish would've worked out: be it her records or relationships. Idk i feel like the 1 could be seen as a reminiscing song that can be an epilogue to exile, august, my tears ricochet. Maybe im just overanalyzing but i just really love it as an opener and sound-setter for folklore.

Here's my ranking! This is based on what fits the best as an opener, not my favorites! 1. Fearless (THAT ICONIC GUITAR! HELLO??) 2. ...Ready For It? (i dont think i am because this is such a superior opener whaaat) 3. Lavender Haze (meet me at MIDNIGHT!) 4. Welcome To New York (self explanatory 💁🏼‍♀️) 5. State Of Grace (great opener, and i love how instruments are added more and more) 6. The 1 (I'm doing good I'm on some new SHIT!) 7. Willow (sets the vibe of evermore very well, but not as well as the others) 8. Mine (it fits with the fairytale aspect of speak now, but sparks fly should've been the opener) 9. Tim McGraw (her first song so it makes sense, but i dont think it should've been first, a place in this world would've been amazing!) 10. I Forgot That You Existed (good vibe and transition from rep, but it doesn't set the theme of the album, and cruel summer would've been way better)

{My Ranking & Reasons} 10: Tim Mcgraw - to be honest, I'm not a huge country fan. This one's at the bottom because of that, and because it's just not a strong opening song like some of the others. 9: I Forgot That You Existed - this one didn't really feel like an opener to me. It gives you the sound of what the album is going to be, but there are other songs on Lover that could've done that. 8: Fearless - This one definitely sets up the album well, lyrically and sonically. The only reason it's ranked so low is because there are stronger contenders in my opinion. 7: Mine - Those opening adlibs and first few notes are iconic. I agree that the song as a whole didn't necessarily need to be the opening track, but I can't imagine listening to Speak Now and not hearing the beginning of that song. 6: Willow - this song really brings you into the world she's creating. It sets up stage for the rest of the album. This is the first one in my ranking I feel like absolutely needed to be the first song on the album. 5: State of Grace - the feeling this song gives me is incredible. I can picture everything she's saying so clearly. Opening with this song almost makes Red feel like a coming of age movie. 4: The 1 - beginning with "I'm doing good, I'm on some new shit" and then giving us the most different sounding album she's ever released, and one of the best albums, was the work of a mastermind. 3: Lavender Haze - that "meet me at midnight" followed by the synth background just does something to me. I also find it interesting in the context of the rest of the album. The "Lavender Haze" is that feeling of false euphoria, ignoring all of your problems and just staying where it feels good. I view the rest of Midnights as her coming out of the lavender haze, and finally having to deal with the issues she had been avoiding. 2: Welcome To New York - she really wrote her first all pop album and just decided to perfect the genre of pop on her first try. 1989 had such a strong cultural impact, I HAD to rank this one high. This song is a perfect opener to me. The sound and the lyrics make me feel like I'm in New York living out my dreams. Absolute perfection. 1: Ready For It - I was, in fact, not ready for it. Absolutely iconic. Flawless. No notes. The way that beat just hits you in the face in the beginning, everyone knew we were about to witness the most iconic thing that has ever happened. Like, ever. It was the baddest bad bitch moment and I will not explain myself any further.

I'm curious if you're doing an album closer ranking, and if it'll be standard edition or deluxe edition closers (for example Mastermind or Dear Reader?) Maybe 2 seperate rankings?

I read a comment once that suggested that every one of Taylor's albums has one line that acts as a sort of thesis statement about the album as a whole, and that Red's is "Love is a ruthless game unless you play it good and right" (you could even include the two preceding lines). So State of Grace really does set the whole album up perfectly (and Ready For It would be a very close second for me as well)!

State of Grace not only is Taylor best opener, but also One of the best opener ever in any albums. The adrenaline rush from the instrumental intro, the impeccable lyrics, the arena rock vibes, the connection with every Red tracks just literal PERFECTION. It might be her best song for me, there's nothing like State of Grace in her discography.

This is so fun to think about! I love that you ranked the songs not just based on personal preference, but truly how they perform as the opener. I'm a rep stan, so when I saw the video title my mind immediately put Ready For It on top, but after some critical thinking- 'Welcome To New York' is just sooo hard to beat in terms how much excitement it generates for the rest of the album. It feels so genuinely optimistic and sets such a vivid scene, I literally feel like I'm in the process of moving to NYC to pursue my dreams whenever I listen to it. Also - I completely agree about 'the 1'. I am obsessed with that song and will never forget the feelings I had when I heard it for the first time.. but I was pondering what else might work as folklore opener instead.. would ''this is me trying' be crazy or what? Justice for Tim McGraw!!! I think that's a really great album opener if you think of her talking to the listeners, rather than to the boy in the story. I doubt that was her intention at the time. But she does stuff like that now (like it mastermind, when she says "I'm a mastermind and now you're [the audience] mine"). So if she's saying to us, "when you think Tim McGraw, I hope you think of me", she's asking us to make her a big name. She saying, 'soon, I will be one of the known greats, I will be a household name.' And that's an insane way to open your first album.

I felt like she ended Reputation with a palette cleanser with New Year’s Day - so I don’t think the opener for Lover makes a cohesive sense with the flow.

I have always felt that A Place In This World could’ve been a great opener for Debut. If that album was to have a concept, I think it being an introduction to Taylor as a person (Hence the title Taylor Swift) would’ve been really interesting. Starting the first album with “I don’t know what I want, so don’t ask me, cause I’m still trying to figure it out” could’ve been a really good introduction to Taylor as a young up and coming artist. Also I 100% agree Sparks fly would have been a great opener to Speak Now

Sort of what you touched on Emily, when you were talking about "Fearless" and how it ties into imagery and the message for the rest of the album, that's what "Tim McGraw" does as well. The whole of Debut is music and using music to express emotions. And having the album start with a song about how she hopes that a specific artist will always make her ex-lover think of her and the love they shared? Not to mention when you connect it with the standard closing track "Our Song"?? How Debut starts with Taylor expressing her emotions through others music to finally being able to express herself with her own voice??? It's a full story and you can't have that story without the beginning! [can you tell that I'm a Debut defender?]

Glad we all generally agree that State of Grace and Ready for it are iconic album openers. I disagree with your rankings of Lavender Haze though, it is truly iconic and such a great way to open that album with her trying her hardest to cling onto the delulu love bubble before her relationship breaks down. My ranking is: 1. Lavender Haze (meet me at midnight, helllooooo + reasons above) 2. State of Grace (some of her best lyrics and the greatest guitar riffs of all time. See twin fire signs, four blue eyes. We learn to live with the pain, mosaic broken hearts. I can't with this song) 3. Ready for it... (the edgy verses contrasted with the dreamy chorus, perfectly captures the vibe of Rep to me. This is definitely bolstered by the iconic Rep tour performance) 4. The one (Emily said it. This is simply the one so must rank highly among track 1s) 5. Fearless (just perfectly captures this doe-eyed, optimistic, country era of Taylor) 6. Willow (we love the witchcraft) 7. Welcome to New York (i really love the lyricism and feel like it sets the scene perfectly, the production just holds it back a bit for me as it's not my fave) 8. Mine (pretty much agree with everything you guys said. If she had picked sparks fly as the opener it would have been top 3 for sure) 9.
