Sheesh, I’m pretty new here in Wyoming, and have been getting into some hiking in my region. Just earlier today, while out for a short hike, I kept thinking that I should at least have a knife on me, to slit the throat of a mountain lion in the off chance of my being attacked by one.

The thing about cougars is that they are nearly impossible to detect. I grew up in cougar territory and spent a lot of time outdoors and saw cougar tracks and scat now and then, but only once did I see a cougar in the wild (not counting flashes from cars at night). I'm sure many cougars saw me though.

No doubt about it. Cats of any size can move around in almost complete silence. Up here in New England the bobcat is the only thriving population of wild cats we have. Our ancestors in the eastern states were so fearful of the mountain lions that they were hunted to extinction. I have only seen one bobcat in my 67 years, and that was almost 50 years ago when i was a young man. My dad had a sawmill, and this bobcat was in the dirt road driveway. It looked like a good sized healthy male to me. We stared at each other for a few moments, and then he went on his way over a stone wall and into the woods. I used to spend a lot of time in the woods in childhood and into early adulthood cutting a lot of firewood. As you say, i would bet the farm that i was seen many times by cats i never saw. Black bears are much less elusive. I have encountered several of them over time.

My husband was hiking in Glacier with our son on his pack 22 ish years ago, when our son was roughly 3 years old & our son started babbling about a doggy kitty & then he started saying, OHH THATS A BIG KITTY … DADDY. It still gives me the shivers. When my husband recounts looking up on the ridge above the trail & seeing that Mountain Lion stalking & watching them.😳 Acting loud & big & not running but moving w/ a little purposeful swiftness I believe helped. He wasn’t carrying a pew pew, bear spray or much of anything, which is insane in hindsight. Always being hyper aware of your surroundings, listening for that dead quiet moment & having a healthy dose of understanding that in that moment you’re in their home territory helps too I think 🤔 .. but sometimes ya never know. Amazing work Tsuki, as usual. You are very appreciated. 😺

Many years ago I was visiting a friend who had "tame" cheetahs on his property. I took to brushing them, as he did, and they'd patiently form a line and wait for the royal treatment. One day, while sitting outside drinking coffee, some persistent head-butting clued me in to a straggler who wanted some attention. The brushes were already there on the table, so I went to 'er. When my buddy came out of one of the sheds, where he'd be pounding away on something, the big cat up and left me at a trot. "Haven't seen this one before," I remarked. My buddy sat down with a thoughtful look on his face and said, "Neither have I."

Cougars/Mountain Lions may seem really scary. But at heart, like most predators, they're cowards. Make a lot of noise and make yourself look bigger than you are by waving your arms. And if attacked go for the eyes, the ears, or the nose. Use a rock, a stick, or anything else you can reach to make your blows hit harder.

Cougars / pumas are no joke.. Back in 2007 when a friend and I purchased property in East Texas, I had heard talk about a black jag was killing cattle close to me.. I blew it off as inbreeders gossip.. However, I was walking the fence line one evening, and for some reason I did have the G27 on me like I usually did.. No biggie (I thought)... Coming back down the fence line, where it was dirts and almost sand from heavy rains washing the area out, I noticed BIG paw prints... What seriously almost unnerved me is they were NOT there when I walk past before.. And these prints were literally in line with my own boot prints. My "radar" went max and I was scanning all around me, and up into the trees.. We're talking maybe 15 minutes at most since I had previously been in this spot. Reached for the G27 that wasn't there.. I had probably 500 yards back to the house and I was absolutely on guard.. Before we finished up the project (I was living out there at the time to oversee it) I finally saw one while glassing around our neighbor's property. I found it laid up in his hay bailer.. Pulled my rifle out and put crosshairs on it, but ole' "Wayne Ray"'s house was right behind it / in line, so no joy.. By the time I got in touch with him it was gone.. Cats are some seriously sneaky fkrs.. Having one stalk / walk right behind me with huge pads (for what I'm used to seeing) really got my attention... RIP to the brother that died which you listed here.. Probably scared it somehow..

@frisk151
@frisk151 5 месяцев назад
@@Mary_Beth_Reimer Honestly, with regard to my experience above.. Even if I had the Glock 27. or a shotgun on me, I don't know if I would have even heard it coming and attacking me outside of probably a fraction of a second prior to impact / contact. Like Orcas, I am glad most cats don't consider us their food source.. IF theu did, we'd be seriously in touble for a long time, and eventually all cats would be 'removed' by "hunters".... As for Orcas.. No human would step food into an ocean for a very long time.. Glad people are not allowed to shoot these cats by permit (etc) in a lot of places.. Don't mess with them... Generally speaking, the don't care to mess with you / us..

@@frisk151 The cat that those young women eventually fought off was a 110 pound female, and one of those women was severely injured. When she was asked what it felt like when the cat pounced on her, she said it felt like the same force as being hit by a car. And that same cat killed a man earlier that day who was also biking, and dragged his body into the bushes to eat later. The only reason the woman survived was because she was not alone. People should not go hiking or biking in cougar or bear country alone, especially biking. If you are armed, alert and on foot, at least you have a chance. Riding a bike you are completely vulnerable to an attack.

A cat of the same size as Arnie meets Arnie. It's the cat who will eat the tasty dog. Cats are pound-for-pound stronger than dogs, plus they are faster they have a better weapons arsenal etc. Cope...

I wish we had a more diverse array of creatures on this planet. If u really think about it the largest land animals u gotta think about are Bears and Tigers/other Big cats. Ya there is other animals but when we look at what was around during the prehistoric ice age eras then it really starts to show just How Many different types of Animals we've lost in our relatively recent past. We had tons of different mega fana and all sorts of fascinating creatures roaming around. I know certain things would make things unsafe but sometimes I'm just bummed out that we've thinned out the animal population across this planet in order to replace it with... (drum roll please 🥁) More Humans!! Yay. Imagine, imagine what life would be like if we basically had mostly humans on this planet and hardly any animal life? Sounds like a Dystopian horror movie that ends in cannibalism lol

What do you think of some zoos taking cheetahs on walks with their emotional support dogs around the park? is it ethical?

In the ancient world Cheetahs were the pets of the rich and famous, Kings and princes walked them often.

@@gordonwaldner9792 they shouldn’t be pets but i guess if they need it in zoos probably to bond with their emotional support dogs who need walking they probably should be walked but at times when there isn’t a lot of guests bc it’s still a cheetah

Mosquitoes would be number one. They kill more people than any other animals on the planet. The only creature that kills more people than mosquitoes would be other humans.
