Can't wait for this show. Tom Petty is one of the greatest singer-songwriters/ bandleaders in Rock history. I still miss him.

Such a talented and prolific songwriter. The best part is his songs are fairly simple from a chord perspective, but his ability to write melodic hooks are among the best of all time.

As a kid, I would always complain when the local rock radio station would play stuff like Tom Petty instead of heavier, more hard rocking stuff. But through the years, I started to find myself digging more and more of his songs. When Tom Petty died, I started listening to more of his stuff, and it really hit me just how amazing Petty and his band are. So, so many great songs. And Petty remained a hitmaker for a very long time. Now, I wanna go listen to some Tom Petty!

Thanks guys. Enjoyed the episode, Miss Tom Petty. A good ranking of his albums that i thoroughly enjoyed, I see that I dug out Pack The Plantation Live album on vinyl that I have. I was a semi fan of his and enjoyed his music on records and enjoyed for long time You're Gonna Get It album i had the single I Need To Know hooked me in to him. Refugee a song classic I love when I would listen to that and Free Fallin and so many of his stuff. Tom could come up with such great gems of songs that is for sure and all though I had not gotten to see him but enjoyed shows that I would get on cassettes of a few that are quite enjoyable as well. He and the band were so entertaining and a great band to watch and be into. Thanks, I miss Tom and glad that he and The Heartbreakers and the band came around and gave the world the great memories that they did, A Merry Christmas To all Pete. Rick, Jamie, Steven, Scott, and Simon for his appearance at the end, Such good discussion guys thank you! 🎄🎁🎅

Into the Great Wide Open is my personal favorite. "Learning to Fly" has brought me to tears on more than one occasion. It's one of the most genuine and life-affirming songs I've ever heard ... P.S. when you guys were talking about why Long After Dark didn't get much airplay or promotion and has been forgotten - it got me thinking that there was an abundance of great solo artists in this era and only so much room on the charts, particularly John Cougar with American Fool and its two massive hits.

Outstanding show - enjoyed it very much. Without a doubt, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers is the single, greatest American band in the history of Rock 'n' Roll / Popular music. (An 'American Treasure' indeed). There is so much depth and quality of work in their catalogue. It is remarkable how well they successfully endured and delivered during several transitional periods in their own lives and the music industry in general. They kept to being an 'album' band in the early 80s, when hits / videos dominated. They expanded their sound with albums like Southern Accents and yes came back to the top in the 90s with Full Moon Fever, Into the Great Wide Open and Wildflowers. As others have posted and mentioned in the show - their last two albums, Mojo and Hypnotic Eye were so impressive, indicative of yet a second major comeback. How many other artists /bands stayed relevant for so long (40 years) without 'recycling' the same type of material? They kept finding ways to stay inspired, wrote what they were feeling and just plain gave us amazing songs through and through. And I know 'Nobody's Children' is part of the '95 Box Set, but it so excellent.

This was a GREAT show! TP just brings out the best about rock music... in every way... including discussing and reminiscing about his music. I hate when whomever is worried about these shows being too long. For me, these discussions are anti-climatic and over too soon when they're only an hour. Just ask Joe Rogan (king of the podcast) about what is too long for a podcast with his 3 hour shows.

Great ranking guys, I liked how everyone had a bit different ranking, one of my favorite songs is “It’ll All Work Out” on Let Me Up (I’ve Had Enough), definitely not their strongest album, but that song is just great and “Straight Into Darkness” on Long After Dark is another favorite of mine, yes, “Change Of Heart” was a single and played on the radio for a time, I had the red colored vinyl of the single, also, Hypnotic Eye is a great album. For some reason his death hit me harder than any artist that passed around the same time he did, even Bowie’s passing didn’t hit me as hard as Tom’s, I think it had a lot to do with the fact that he came from a similar working class upbringing as myself and he got to live his dream.

Is Wildflowers considered a bit hipster a common opinion? I've honestly never heard that or got that impression. It's definitely my favourite, from first listen in the mid-2000s. I think it intitally stuck with me because it had a prominent acoustic side to it and it didn't bore me. Time To Move On is one of my favourite songs ever, gets me right in the feels. I only saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers the once, at Hyde Park in London in 2017. I was pretty disenchanted with live concerts at the time, but within minutes of this show starting I felt like I were 15 again. They played with such spirit and energy and had the crowd in the palms of their hands. Mike Campbell might just be my model of how great guitar players should approach the instrument. He’s incredibly versatile, can play in any style, is tasteful and always in service to the song, doesn’t showboat and has great technique but uses it sparingly. He provided a masterclass that evening. It was one of the great live music experiences of my life. Three months later Tom Petty was dead.

We have a special appreciation for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers here in Gainesville, Florida. Tom always had something to say or a story to tell in his songwriting. Full Moon Fever is probably my favorite, but my favorite song, "Mary Jane's Last Dance" was only on the Greatest Hits album. When my daughter was 10, she went to bed almost every night listening to that album. The Traveling Wilburys gave Tom a chance to record music with some of his favorite musicians and to just have a good time.

Cool 🤠 So many bands if you ask Pete a few years ago he wouldn't have said no not a fan don't want to listen to them Although his mind has been open to some great stuff he's missed I'm willing to lay a bet though he will never become a Ramones fan😂😂

Will have to investigate his albums, like the few songs I have heard, it's strange but there are a lot of US bands I have never listened to like Journey, Styx, Van Halen, Kansas, Chicago and UK bands like Magnum, Uriah Heep etc. I tend to like very heavy metal or classy pop, just can't take to AOR or soft rock, though I love Steely Dan. Another great show though lads, thanks. Listen every night when I crack open a cider. Heaven :)

Good video Pete. Surprised that you did a video about Petty since I've heard you complain many times about his 'nasly' voice. Shall we expect something about Dylan from you in the future? LOL. Didn't think a 2 hr video would keep my interest but it did. I enjoyed the banter with the guests but if I had to rank my top 5 as you say, they would be in this order (1st - 5th). Full Moon Fever, Damn the Torpedoes, Hypnotic Eye, Into the Great Wide Open, Mojo (I like blues).

Regarding the Echo album Tom was going through the breakup of his first marriage , depression and recovering from heroin issues . His house fire episode took place over a decade earlier in May 1987. Band member Howie Epstein had a heroin problem at the time of recording and failed to show up for the album photo shoot . A very good album nonetheless.

Room at the Top off Echo is my favorite Petty song ever. My brother actually chose it as his wedding song and the band he had never heard it before and had to learn it. The entire band ended up loving that song. From what I read, the song really bothered Tom on a personal level and he stopped playing it on that tour. Gwyneth Paltrow actually begged him to play it at the show she went to and he still didn’t play it.

Pete, I hear you recently found the T.P. album catalogue at a used record store and got them on the cheap. You also once described T.P. as a best of band, so looks like a video is reason enough to give them a chance.

The Wildflowers reissue demonstrates that Petty could have actually issued a volume 2 in addition to still leaving outtakes for She's the One. Both volumes would have been in my top 5 !

Tom Petty was a genius and The Heartbreakers were one of the greatest American bands. On all levels; from performing to playing to recording to writing, TP and The Heartbreakers were standouts from first song to last.

This was a great show. I fist saw Petty in 86 (I think) when he was the opening act and back up band for Dylan. Got to see him a few more times as well and each show was nothing short of great. I don't think I could come up with a list due to my love of the entire catalog. I would have loved to have heard what Simon may have had as a top 5. That is if "Uncle Simon the Invincable" is a fan

I had a similar experience to Pete with Petty. I came late to the Petty Party in the early 2000's. I think it's both to do with what I was into (heavier less commercial stuff), and the fact that I liked his singles but didnt love them. However I was exposed to Full Moon Fever and knew it was an amazing Pop/Rock album. Some day a late night WDHA DJ played the deep cut "You Tell Me". I immediately purchased "Damn the Torpedos" the next day. Been down the Petty road ever since.

Agree with Pete, American Girl never did anything for me. I was surprised, however, that Wildflowers was #10. We're all different of course and have diffferent taste, but for me it's his strongest work. It's magical to me. Also, check out Finding Wildflowers released in 2021, which is alternative takes of Wildflowers.
