My candy bar hot take: Pay Day is the only uncoated candy bar, & therefore the only safe choice for the driver in a hot car on a long drive in the South. Nobody wants a sticky steering wheel.
I used to do sales audits for a marketing research company, and it blew my mind that Payday was in the category of Skittles, and not Baby Ruth, etc. (chocolate vs. non-chocolate)
Used to work for a major processed food manufacturer. They had a product on the market that contained coconut - and it didn't sell well. They did a survey to find out why it didn't sell. Turns out, only 20% of the population even likes coconut.
I can't believe that! I love coconut anything! Coconut candies, coconut milk, coconut water, coconut flavors in milkshakes or frosting or whatnot. I love the smell of coconut. Who could possibly not like coconut!?!? 🥥❤🥥❤ Almond Joy and Mounds is amongst my faves of commercial candy bars.
Going to show my age here, but when I was a kid in the 70s, there were "Watchamacallit" commercials where somebody would see another person eating a candy bar and ask them what it was. The person eating the candy bar would say, "Whatchamacallit", and I think you probably can guess where the rest of the commercial went.
I didn't know they still make it. I never see it anymore. For some reason, it brings back flashbacks of eating it at the public swimming pool when I was a kid.
Zero bars are my Maw Maw’s favorites too! They’re becoming increasingly more difficult to find where I live, so she always appreciates when I can buy her a few. (Fun fact: The date that I’m making this comment is her 74th birthday!)
I always bought these when my kids were young because they wouldn't go near them. Then one spring break, there wasn't any other junk in the house and Both of my kids found out they love em. Dang it. Fast forward 10 years...I literally sent a box of them to my kid who lives in the Northwest for Christmas last year. He said it was better than the year he got the go-kart. Y'all sleeping on Whatchamacallits.
As a man who loves dark chocolate, I can confirm, it's pistols at dawn. However, my favorite candy bar is also Pay Day, partly because it doesn't have chocolate at all. Because a lot of candy companies just straight-up don't use good chocolate.
That’s the thing with videos like these(not just him, but other creators). They go with a pre conceived notion that they won’t like it before they even try it. They let their bias dictate their decisions and that’s not right. Mounds are in my top 5 favorite candy bars. Zero being number one.
Got a Whatchamacallit for the first time since about 1981 the other day. MAN! I agree. WHY is that not a more popular choice! I'm going to put it up to the fact that there's no fun sized Halloween Whatchamacallit bars for us to steal from our kids.
We have nothing on the Japanese when it comes to the variety of Kit Kat flavours. They even have regional ones that feature something associated with that area that you can buy to take home as gifts when you travel (something you're expected to do).
I bought some at Narita on my way back from a 2 week vacation a couple of years ago. One of the flavors was Hokkaido Melon And Mascarpone Cheese, and it was pretty good. I shared some with my mom and she told me to hunt some down if I ever go back - which I hope to do again someday.
I've noticed a lot of food companies have been "improving" recipes this past year, even if they're tried-and-true. I suspect it's not actually "improved" ingredients, but rather improved profit. In other words, they're making stuff cheaper (but charging us the same or more) because of the pandemic causing issues in factories and with getting supplies they were getting before. It's sad.
Butterfinger actually has better ingredients and healthier, the problem is the cheaper stuff tasted better. You would think declining sales would make them go back.
@@Tratios Not what's taught in "management" today. You give the people not what they want, but what you want them to have, and the stupid consumer will keep on buying from you.
Can we all acknowledge that he missed out by being sent stuff like Mounds and Skor instead of a 100 Grand? I remember the 100 Grand being a pretty dang good candy bar. It's like if they said, "Milk Duds taste nice, but maybe we shouldn't make a candy that can rip your teeth out of your skull." It's just chocolate, caramel, and puffed rice, but man do I remember it being tasty. But then again, I haven't had a candy bar in 5-ish years, so they very well could have changed to have lower-quality ingredients or a recipe tweak that makes it bad. Or maybe I'm just misremembering it because 5 years is a long time.
Fun fact: over here in the UK if I want a "3 Musketeers" I have to shop for a "Milky Way" and if I want a "Milky Way" I have to buy a "Mars bar" (Also "Smarties" are candy-coated chocolate like M&Ms instead of little chalky tart tablet candies in a tube)
Potatoes would easily be the number 1 vegetable. It's the only vegetable that's enjoyable to eat whether it's baked or turn into french fries and hash browns.
@@jamesjames6601 sweet potatoes would be #1.. you can mash them, fry them, french fry them, hash brown them, make them into pies, bake them, and make candy out of them.. yummm.. they win
@@saoirsacooper3436 sweet potato souffle is the only good thing with sweet potato, otherwise potatos are better. Sweet potatos are not good at all for anything in my opinion.
Left out so many great ones. Fifth Avenue, Chunky, Clark, Mars, Oh Henry. The Watchamacallit is the best one out of the ones you reviewed in my opinion.
I love O Henry's! And you are right, they ARE hard to find! One time, I found them in our local Hardware store, but they don't carry them all the time 😔
I really don't understand why some people don't consider chocolate to be candy. I agree if you don't count Hershey's a candy bar then a payday shouldn't. Plus while they're cups Reese's Cups are still candy bars in spirit at the very least. lol
I think the 'take 5' is the closest thing to a candy bar that reeses makes. It has 5 things for when I can't decide what I want in my candy bar. Twix is at least bar shaped.
Mars Bar, the American version with almonds, was the greatest candy bar of all time. But the misguided folks at Mars/M&M killed it off. Rest in peace my friend.
Matt was right on with the Payday and Dr Pepper combo! Before I found out I had diabetes, I would have a Payday and Dr Pepper for my afternoon break at work. Now that I think about it, that might be why have diabetes. Lol
Gotta say I love Milky Ways. They are pretty much Snickers without the peanuts, but the Milky Way saves you the picking peanuts out of your teeth. Also, Snickers are pretty good when you freeze them. Lastly, even though (understandably) they weren’t included, Reese’s Sticks are the bomb!!!!
Matt is just being himself, but he is so funny and spot on with his assessments. But Hey, who else is concerned about his health? He often does these sugary taste tests.
I’m old so I remember when Butterfinger was good, some time in the 70s they started messing with the peanutty crumbly filling, so it became hard and chewy, it’s never been the same
it's also acceptable to eat half of the candy bar and then throw the rest in the freezer until you're in the mood for ice cream.. as long as 1/2 the bar is reserved for ice cream
You have to try the WHOZEEWHATZIT Candy Bar. WHATCHAMACALLIT has a creamy caramel layer with a crispy peanut-flavored rice center while WHOZEEWHATZIT has a creamy peanut butter layer with a crispy chocolate creme rice center.
Zero is also my favorite, a lot of people I know have never even heard of them. Gotta like white chocolate though and I feel like most people prefer milk or dark.
Whatchmacalit was always my favorite and it's completely unadvertised and underrated. I remember the original commercials, maybe in the 90s and then it stopped. Glad to see they're still manufacturing it.
Gotta do a Bless your Rank with Matt ranking as many different KitKat flavors as you can get your hands on. There are a ton of different flavors out in Japan.
I had the original 3 muskateer bar, it was originally packaged with 3 bars. the bars were filled with chocolate, strawberry , or vanilla. They were too hard to make, so they just discontinued strawberry and vanilla as the chocolate was most popular. However, the strawberry and vanilla ones were delicous and I wish they would bring them back! Also the best candy bar is a Take 5
I know this fact and would love to be able to try an original 3 Musketeers candy bar. It sounds like it could potentially be top tier, and with as many crazy varieties of candies that exist today, surely we have to be past whatever problems made manufacturing it so difficult.
Not gonna lie, I hate midnight milky way not because of the candy itself but because someone I knew loved it frozen and I have a love/hate relationship with them. Haha
Thanks to international sections in shops, I've had a payday in New Zealand ^.^ Also, the American milky way bar sounds completely different to the ones we have in NZ
I was deployed to Bosia-Herzagovina while in the USAF in 2002, and was there on my birthday. I asked my mom to send me my favorite candy bar, Mounds, for my B'day. One day I went into the French Exchange where I discovered mp3 players and Bounty candy bars. Bounty is made by Mars, but not sold in the U.S. They are so much better than Mounds that they ruined Mounds for me. I raved about them so much that I have a friend from France that I worked with in Bosnia who still sends me Bounty candy bars on my birthday, 20 years later.
Bounty initially was sold in the US when they were brand new but didn’t last. They were and remain heavenly. Mounds were like that when they were new but less coconut. My local grocery store carries them in their British food section and I pick one up every so often
@@MaryM232 The place I get gas has a basket with unusual candy in it. Occasionally it has Bounty in it and I buy them all. I also order them on Amazon. They're that good.
I have seen Bounty at Meijer sometimes, in the British part of the World Foods section. I guess it depends when and if that particular store orders them.
You didn't do a zero candy bar. They are pretty top notch for a white chocolate bar. I agree that payday is by far the best there is. Simple and awesome
I've loved skor since i was little. Whenever I go for chocolate, I always get a skor. Even if I'm thinking I want something else, I buy a skor with it. I don't mind that other people aren't big on them lol I'll eat all of them!!!
First of all am I the only one that thinks Matt is a psycho for biting the almond in half on the almond joy? You eat that whole almond and then you eat the other one…
Did you ever notice the candy bar evolution? Start with a Musketeers. Now add caramel. Now you got a Milky Way. So now you take that, then add peanuts. Now you got a Snickers! Or instead of peanuts, add almonds. Now its a Mars Bar!
The nougat in a Musketeers is different than the others. It's fluffier and more chocolate taste. The original 3 Musketeers had 3 parts a chocolate, vanilla, and a strawberry piece
@@alphagt62 Its the same as a Mars bar. The Mars Co. discontinued their signature bar and rebranded it as Almond Snickers. Outside the U.S. its still a Mars Bar though
Love these Bless Your Rank vids. Matt does a great job and they are always enjoyable. It does show why there are so many different bars though since we all have such different tastes. Skor, Mounds, and Whatchamacallit are three of my faves and I don't like peanuts mixed with other things so I can't stand Payday or Snickers. My rankings for those would have been the complete opposite but that makes our uniqueness that much the better.
Okay, seeing as these are personal choice rankings, I would put Mounds and Almond Joy much higher. I do however understand your issue with the dark chocolate. It has a sharper slightly bitter taste to it that some people just can't get on board with. I understand, because I know that palates are different. I'm so very happy that you put 3 Musketeers so high in the rankings as it's one of my all time favorites as well. As to the Heath and Skor bars. You really have to be a fan of toffee to like those. I have a bestie who loves the Heath bar, but I'm more partial to the Skor bar as it has a stronger flavor to it. There again, it comes down to a difference in how your taste buds receive and process flavors. I do get your point about leaving out the Reeses as you are quite right about the large number of varieties that they have! By the way, did you know that Kit Kat has a chocolate/strawberry version? I don't think that you would like that one very much as it is a dark chocolate variety. I am however with you in that they should make the lemon ones more often! These videos are so much fun and I had a good time watching this one while I ate my dinner!
Yes! Finally someone spoke about the butterfinger change lmaooo They made it taste more like peanut butter which honestly changed it so much and took away the nostalgia
Okay, so it wasn't my imagination. Not to mention that he is spot on about the fact that the bars are considerably smaller than when I was a child.....you know, back in the stone age according to my children.
You know I though take 5 was a candy bar already, I got the ads and was so confused like "Reese's take 5? Isn't take 5 already a thing?" this explains a lot lol.
He should have done a subset of all the Reese's bars (since he complained there were too many) and chosen the best of the pack. Then rank the best Reese's bar with the rest of those candy bars.
Nothing beats a frozen 3 musketeer. I keep the mini size in the freezer all the time. Edited because who remembers the mound and almond joy commercials. Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't.
I remember for a very short time, they made chocolate covered paydays. To die for! Any payday bar was my favorite, until I developed a peanut allergy. Bummer!!
I'm sure others have said this, but I can't place a candy bar in first place without chocolate in it. But bless your heart for preferring Payday. That means more Snickers for me.
Matt: goes through another sugar rush Me: *Flashbacks* Well said, coconut is delicious. *It's the coco fruit, it's the coco fruit! Of the coco tree, of the coco tree! FROM THE COCO PALM FAMILY*
@@caseygibson7266 The man would mainline Mountain Dew and eat candy bars until his wife decides to save us by taking all that sugar away from him forcing his butt into cold turkey withdrawal.
Any time white chocolate is brought to the table it nulls everything. I firmly believe you could dunk a dog turd in white chocolate and it would be "scrumptious" 😂
"New and improved recipe" is marketing spin for "We made it with cheaper ingredients"... Many cheapen out by using a "chocolatey" coating rather than actual chocolate. Basically it's made with chocolate but has fillers that make it technically not chocolate by definition. Sort of how processed cheese is made with cheese but has other ingredients that make it not cheese in a technical sense.
While I agree that it's a marketing ploy, it seems to me that they are just emphasizing something that already was because it sounds better than just saying that they have peanuts. I mean, they have always been dry roasted peanuts. It's like oat and rice cereals capitalizing on the fact that they are 'gluten free'. They always have been, it's just that they are now emphasizing that point to capture sales.
I could tell everytime they changed the recipes All through the years Some of my old favorites are inedible these days Way too sweet, just cheap imitations. Someone..please make some of our favorites with the OLD recipes Of course each candy bar would cost about $5. Lol.
When I get employed again I'm joining the Potluck and paying to make Matt rank veggie burgers and other meat alternatives. Not a Vegan or Vegetarian, but damn would it be fun to watch. Not sure if he'd enjoy it or not, but I've had good non-meat foods that blew me away and I think that would be fun to watch him experience. Feel free to steal my idea. Likely a month out from buy in.
speaking of messing with the recipe. Does anyone remember the New Coke back in the 80's?. Coca-cola was trying to compete with Pepsi but got such a back lash that they finally brought the original coke back as "Classic Coke" then they slowly phased out the new coke. I sure remember that. I could take the new coke or leave it but when they brought back the "Classic Coke" i was happy. The Classic was the real thing..
Right. I mean, Matt, I love ya but.... People who like dark chocolate like chocolate. People who don't like dark chocolate like sugar and milk. That said it doesn't hurt my feelings a bit. Never have to worry about ya'll stealing my chocolate. 🙂
I am trying a "no artificial sugar diet" and made it a week so far... And now why am I watching all this temptation !?!?!?! To support the channel, of course.
My favorite: Kit Kat Duos Mint + Dark Chocolate. I _may_ have once bought an entire case of them from Sam's and eaten the entire thing in a couple of months. 🤫🤐
I agree! Payday is indeed the best when it comes to Ameican candy bars. I happen to live overseas and travel Europe quite a bit and well, let's just say that it's a good thing you're not comparing U.S. candy bars to the candy bars found in other parts of the world or you would indeed be disappointed. But hey, we do what we can with what we've got, right? Cheers from one southerner to another.
Zagnut is the best. They are still around but, they’re hard to find. For those of you that don’t know what it is, it’s like a Butterfinger with toasted coconut instead of chocolate. It’s similar to a chick a stick only better. I don’t know how it works because I’m not the greatest fan of peanut butter and not really a fan of coconut either. Payday and Take five are second and third on my list, at least.
Butterfingers are hit and miss for me. In some, they crumble and melt in your mouth. In others, they try to rip your teeth out and wedge themselves like a tick on your teeth.
My favorite is top 3! I love a Snickers bar! A Snickers and a Coca-Cola is my go-to combo for concessions stands right now. Sometimes I get real food (aka hot dogs or nachos), but yeah.
