Ranking the Most Powerful Waterbenders in Avatar 

You have to realize everything we saw katara do was with less than a YEAR of training…. Within a year she became the strongest water bender a live and she was only 14….. all of these other water benders are full adults. It would be safe to assume that katara is stronger than them

We all know Katara is a master… She did it all by herself. Imagine her in her 20s or 30s.

It's often overlooked that Hama is the OG bloodbender

putting katara in #4 was a crime, shes literally master of every waterbending aspects. water, healing, bloodbending. she even adapt technique from another bending form of fight.

Hama was a beast. Inventing a new bending is far more difficult than learning it.

Katara is my number 1. If she was power hungry, she would've been unstoppable 😊

Ming Hua is such an underrated character...Its crazy how strong she is, without even having arms...Honestly Ming Hua is one of my favorite water benders!!!

I once heard a theory that Yua was supposed to be the next avatar instead of Korra, but due to Aang being frozen, she obviously couldn’t accept Rava’s spirit, which is why she needed help from the moon That is all to say in another life she probably would’ve been a powerful bender from birth 😌

Honestly, the benders from Legend of Korra are so underrated. The way they’re animated is so beautiful and combat techniques are so interesting to watch! The fight scenes in Legend of Korra are so action packed!

Actually Water Bending Skills of Kya is really commendable, she trained to be a Healer and there's no war during her time growing up and still she was able to fight that way. The Twins kombat with Ming Hua should have been more a good fight, animated did them dirty.

Kya should be ranked higher, in the series she was not taught combat waterbending only healing but she is still extremely good, if Katara trained her well on dueling she could be very excellent.

hama should have been alot higher on the list because as you put toph as no. 1 for creating metal bending hama created blood bending as an idea no one else thought of and not only that pulling water from any source. no other on the list was so creative. at least 3 or 2 if not first place

Tarlock, Amon and Yakkone are top 3 not counting Yue. I'd put Unalaq between Pakku and Ming Hua. He's good but not above Amon's family or Katara. Unless you meant Unavatuu

For me selecting Katara in 4th place is a crime, she literally mastered waterbending + the 2 sub bending elements in less than a YEAR, Amon and Unalaq are grown adults, imagine what Katara could be at her 20s/30s, but ofc she can't stay at the 1st place, Yue is literally the moon and can create giant waves without even an effort, more more than Katara, and by the way she can bend while being a spirit is just insane. Katara should've been at the 2nd place for me.

Ming Hua is such a terrifying character. She scared the heck out of me.

Number 1 was clearly an honorary mention... That said, i think this list is actual about water benders and the amount the threat the seemed to pose... With the flawlessness of toph at her prime, one can assume that katara, if she were willing to fight, would take out a lot of all these characters, even Amon, one by one or perhaps multiple at a time. The fight properly needs a clear head, one thing most if these characters doesn't have and katara has in abundance 😊😊

Not to mention when katara did that octopus, tentacle 🐙 like, stance/ move. She also adapted earth bending into her water bending. Katara was unmatched.

In The Legend Of Korra, Katara was regarded as the best water bender. We only saw Katara as a young teenager who had just been a master for about a year. I would imagine she was way stronger in her prime. I think she should hold the number one spot.

Katara's waterbendeing style is more unique than you might think. Her basics are self taught which already makes it unique, was taught northern style and mastered it. I don't think she mastered or even got close to mastereing southern style since she spend not even a week with Hama. Her bloodbending is basic, but being one of only two bloodbenders at the time already makes you unique. What people seems to often forget is that while she learned northern style properly, she is still mostly self taught and spend more time among earthbenders. Her movement and technic is closer to that of an earthbender. Her dual with Hama is a great example. She blocks and strike most of the time rather than using her opponent's strengths against them, while Hama fights like a proper waterbender by redirecting Katara's attacks. This could explain why Tarlok's and Korra's style of waterbending is also aggressive compared to their relatives in the North. Seems like the South Pole was affected a lot by this.

With no bloodbending, the only character that could defeat Unalaq is probably Ming Hua. With bloodbending, it's Amon.

How I wish Katara was power hungry so we would've seen how she beats these other waterbenders in the ranking to a pulp. I want to see her bloodbend while in rage. 😂

Im glad to see someone finally give unalaq credit as the best base combat waterbender. As a villian he is by far the worst and that makes many people write him off, but his skills as a waterbender cannot be overlooked.

Actually in the anime, Yue said that she feels her bending stronger in a full moon. It is a hint that she is a water bender herself

people always underestimate kya simply because she lost to zaheer and minghua even though she was 55 years old during the fight, was rusty cause she spent most of her life traveling the world, etc... kya could probably be higher on the list in her prime

I think Amon should take the number 1. You are right about everything you said about Unalaq but It's not fair count his feats as the dark avatar and if you are going to count this version of him you should also include in the list everyone who had access to Avatar State... That being said Amon > Unalaq but Unavaatu > Amon..... Amon is by far the greatest water bender prodigy of both series....

Ming-Hua is just on another level IMO, Hama is psycho, Katara is so well rounded and versatile (can heal and bloodbend), and Kya uses water as if she was using air.... but Amon is truly in my opinion the best, he technically cannot be defeated unless it's by an avatar.

I love how you gave everyone their props and u were actually objective in ur outlook, personally Katara will always be the strongest in my eyes. (she healed the crimple🤭), I also loved how even the least rank felt represented and their strengths were highlighted

My goodness! Watching this list makes me want to watch the entire Avatar series. I have yet to see it. Though I’m kind of familiar with some characters I’m no where proficient in the hows and knows dealing with benders.

Katara in her prime is the most powerful waterbender. She is the best healer in the world, learnt blood bending in minutes and overpowered the creator of blood bending… Her big scale waterbending feats are comparable to avatar state korra’s feats… And she started from absolute zero. She is absolutely the most talented and skilled waterbender of all time. Of course she didn’t develop blood bending due to moral reasons, but I believe if she had, she could’ve been a bloodbender at the level of Amon and Yakone. Actually, blood bending won’t work on a stronger waterbender, that’s why the avatar state negates blood bending. So I think not even Amon Yakone or Tarrlok could blood bend katara because she is just the better waterbender

I never thought about Ming Hua was simultaneously doing like 5 kinds of water bending whenever we saw her fight. I would have tied her with Amon. I know blood bending is the pinnacle technique in water bending. But her ability to do all of that while having no arms is incredible.

Still waiting for a Waterbender to completely master temperature control and Steambending. We've seen Katara bend steam when she helped to destroy the Fire Nation drill. We even saw her create fog when she acted as the Painted Lady. However, nobody ever frequently incorporates steam and water vapor into their Waterbending except for Hama, who only uses it to convert water vapor into water to extract water from thin air. This requires a waterbender to condense and cool the water vapor, and obviously turning water into ice also requires cooling water. Katara creating fog during her Painted Lady act would have required her to heat the water up. Based on that, we know that Waterbenders should be able to control the temperature of their water. Nickalodeon would have never done this because it would have been too violent, but it would be much more deadly in combat for Waterbenders to wield scalding hot water against their enemies so that the water wouldn't only deal blunt force damage or cutting damage, but also heat damage. Related to this, if one were to master Steambending to the point where they could flash enough water to steam at once, they could use this ability to generate pressure explosions as destructive as Combustionbending since steam takes up much more volume than liquid water. Steambending also opens up many more sources of water to the user. Hama demonstrated this by bending the water vapor in her immediate vicinity into small amounts of water, but seeing how the most powerful Waterbenders are able to bend water from great distances, it should be possible to bend the water in the clouds from the ground and then condense them as a water source. A Steambender would also be able to wield hot steam as a deadlier version of airbending, creating gouts of steam capable of burning victims, or gathering a large amount of invisible humidity and then condensing parts of it into water or ice for unpredictable attacks. One could even just freeze a person instantly with invisible water vapor. And then you could take this even further, so long as your morals are more questionable, by combining temperature control, Icebending, and Steambending with Bloodbending. A Steambender who can also Bloodbend would be able to make their foes simply explode on the spot, and a Bloodbender can also freeze their foes' internal organs. In fact, Avatar Kyoshi actually froze the heart and lungs of one of her enemies to instantly kill him, so we know it's possible. And to maybe use Bloodbending for something more ethical, a Bloodbender with healing abilities could theoretically heal someone using the liquids already present in that person's body, healing them without the need for an external water source.

If you count Unalaq as dark avatar, then count Korra as Avatar too. Plus Katara is unbloodbendable she said; "my bending is more powerful than yours hama, your technique is useless on me" Katara's bending is like superior. She is the only one who can bend two sub bendings at the same time

no problem about Yue, but Katara is the real master of water bending, she deserves to be on top. She was only around 14 during her journey with the avatar. So she is the strongest, she can even beat Unalaq in a battle following with Amon.

To people defending Katara: That someone is a main character doesn't mean they are (one of) the strongest.

I want you guys to think about this real quick, bloodbending requires an extremely high level of water bending, that’s why most waterbenders cant bloodbend without the moon, here’s another thing to think about, psychic bending is the ability to bend without any movement, that also requires a high level of mastery to pull it off, yakone and Amon are psychic blood benders that doesn’t need the moon to blood bend why are they not number 1 & 2? With tarrlock right behind him bc let’s not forget that he blood bend 6 ppl at the same time knocking them unconscious, yakone psychic blood bend a whole courtroom(without moon) and blood bend aang which aang needed avatar state to break out, and then there’s Amon who brought it to a level that he could take away bending.

What Katara did in a year alone was so impressive Icebending, Healing, Cloudbending, Mudbending, plantbending, and mastering waterbending itself then going on to be one of the few bloodbenders ever, and she even used her own sweat in book 3 and perfume in the first book seeing her progession was awesome. If she ever learned spiritbending she'd be one of the most diverse and resourceful benders ever not that she isnt already.

Katara is restricted in use of the bloodbending that it can only be used during a full moon and it effects the mental state so she doesn't use it often. The father and the two brothers were known to use it without a moon. Those three also did not hesitate to lose their minds over the bloodlust of being killers. Not only that Amon found out a way to take away bending using his bloodbending ability.

Yakone and his sons should be top 3. They can do everything a waterbender could do, plus bloodbend effortlessly.

That fight between Kya and Zaheer had me gagged bc like the level of detail within the fight alone. The little water ring that she shoots ice out of, actually diminished. Obvs like it was an unfair battle but sis did her thing!

I’d argue Kya to be higher on the list as her water bending was crazy. Where as Tonroq’s waterbending seemed to be more limited as we really only saw him use icebending, showing his lack of knowledge over his bending and the fact he had a terrible connection to spirits which is vital in waterbending.

People dont seem to realise that katara took out AZULA, a firebending prodigy who had been training since she was little, DURING SOZINS COMET. Her only advantage being Azula went mad and wasnt thinking clearly.

Blood bending family is clearly top 3 and it is not even close. How you could put for example Katara a head of Yakone? He controled at least 60 people at once.

It’s crazy to think that all katara accomplished was in under a YEAR, Katara in the comics is a FORCE, being able to use Plantbending, take water from seemingly Nowhere (Probably the skill she learned from Hama), her defense was able to block an attack from a spirit that went toe to toe with AVATAR STATE Aang, she’s also insanely durable, being able to get right back up from a blast straight to the stomach by Azula’s fireball and knocking straight into rocks, she’s able to cut through metal, rock/boulder, wood, she was stated to be the finest waterbender in the world by Pakku, and also stated to be the most powerful person outside of the Avatar himself by Iroh!
