This was a fascinating example of how we all hear music differently. I could never have imagined Doug’s vocals could turn some people off - for me his voice and the amazing stuff he does on the bass (12-string and the like) is a major part of what I love about this band. Great show!
Good episode but he seemed to oversell them quite a bit, perhaps due to them being considered very underrated. Not that King’s X isn’t a great band but he’s only recently gotten big into them and he’s gushing over a lot of it calling it genius and what not. He also contradicted himself a few times. In the beginning he said the early productions could’ve been better and wanted them to sound heavier but then later when talking about the first album he said it had big thick riffs. Hmmm. And those early albums are quite heavy for the time. He also said Mr. Bulbous isn’t a very heavy album yet it’s tuned in drop C. Those riffs on that album are crushingly heavy. It’s just a weird more experimental album but still maybe one of their heaviest. And then he said Dogman probably has the best production even though among longtime fans the early stuff is usually rightfully considered the most well produced and Martin even said they had great meticulous productions. Just seems like he’s too agreeable at times and doesn’t form his own opinion and stand by it. Those early albums sound so unique and especially the guitar tone. Dogman by comparison sounds quite a bit more generic. Just a few things that came to mind throughout the video.
Gifted musicians all around. Criminally underrated band. Ty’s tone is unparalleled. 1 - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska 2 - Faith, Hope, Love 3 - King’s X 4 - Dogman 5 - Tapehead 6 - Ear Candy 7 - Out of the Silent Planet 8 - Orge Tones 9 - Please Come Home… Mr. Bulbous 10 - XV 11 - Manic Moonlight 12 - Black Like Sunday
I am much more with you on this list. King's X (self titled album) is a classic and I agree with putting it ahead of Dogman. Just a pity it never got the attention it deserved at the time.
Kudos on this ranking show! So regardless of ranking I enjoy all of these albums.... 1. Dogman 2. Gretchen 3. Ear Candy 4. Tape Head 5. Out of the Silent Planet 6. Faith Hope Love 7. Please Come Home Mr. Bulbous 8. XV 9. King's X 10. Ogre Tones 11. Manic Moonlight 12. Black Like Sunday
Kings X are a lot like BOC. Great songwriting. Great musicianship. Far better than many of their more successful contemporaries. Can’t really be placed in a box. Greatly under appreciated, yet adored by their fans.
@@davedecker1725 What a great song that is, could've definitely been a hit. I've had Ear Candy on for a little and it's hitting the spot. For this band not all their stuff hits because of the varied styles they do. That's what I've found but I love when they get melodic and accessible like that.
@@mck7646 It's definitely a jem, Looking for love, sometimes, Jerry's pianto American cheese etc etc etc I think one of the reasons KINGS X didn't hit it big was the prog Try to dance to Lost in Germany or Talk to you or Black flag.... All massively epic jams but....
I'm so happy. Stopped what I was doing and watched all the way through. So much love for these guys. The industry never got them but the fans are here for them.
THANK YOU!!!!! My favorite band of all time. I've seen them live, over a dozen times. The highlight of my musical career, was getting to open for them, on the Tapehead tour. 1. Gretchen Goes to Nebraska 2. Dogman 3. King's X 4. Faith Hope Love 5. Ear Candy 6. Out of the Silent Planet 7. Tapehead 8. XV 9. Ogre Tones 10. Please Come Home...Mr. Bulbous 11. Manic Moonlight 12. Black Like Sunday
OK, you guys are now ready for the Galactic Cowboys - another Houston band. By the way, you all should check out Junior's Gone Wild from Bill & Ted Go to Hell by King's X. An excellent track that should have been on an album. Top 5 is #1 Faith Hope Love #2 Gretchen #3 Out of the Silent Planet #4 King's X and #5 Dogman. Martin was throwing daggers in my heart on some of his picks.
Galactic Cowboys should have stayed The Awful Truth. David Von Ohlerking was a beast of a player and songwriter. We played several shows with him back in the early 90's and he was always astounding. That one album Awful Truth did was ridiculously good, but unfortunately wasn't released until after they broke up.
One of my favorite bands of all time. Saw them live many times and had the good fortune of meeting them. I came to them very early when many did not even know about them and have stuck with them ever since. What a great balance of styles and technique throughout their catalog. Despite not getting the popular recognition they deserve, many of their peers have a deep respect for them. I will always support them and look forward to any new music they choose to unleash. Long live the King!
1. Dogman 2. Gretchen Goes to Nebraska 3. Tape Head 4. Please Come Home...Mr. Bulbous 5. Ear Candy 6. King's X 7. Faith Hope Love 8. Out of the Silent Planet 9. XV 10. Ogre Tones 11. Manic Moonlight 12. Black Like Sunday
Great show! To me, the 4th album (self-titled) has the best production of the bunch. Dogman is definitely the heaviest, but that 4th album perfectly captures that early King's X sound. The first four albums are magical.
Popoff and Pardo are at it again with the (until recently unexpected twist of) ranking the Kings X albums. Thanks to Martin for being one of the influences in brining Pete to this ranking and thanks to Pete for recognizing in himself what he preaches to us - it's never too late to revisit a band's catalogue. Haven't listened to this band in years but Faith, Hope Love was my favorite of the early albums with Gretchen Goes To Nebraska a close second. A particularly enjoyable show, gents. since it involved discussion and talking about the same material by each of you. Thanks again.
Maybe not the most commercially successful, but certainly one of the most beloved amongst many well-known musicians, and for good reason, to my ears; Excellent band, and not exactly the easiest to categorize. 1. Faith Hope Love 2. King’s X 3. Gretchen Goes to Nebraska 4. Dogman 5. Ear Candy 6. Out of the Silent Planet 7. Tapehead Even though I’ve heard bits and pieces from the others, I never did get around to buying the rest of the catalogue.
I honestly like all of these. I got into them pretty early and have been a fan since. 12) Manic Moonlight 11) Tape Head 10) Black Like Sunday (Not sure if you guys will include this) 9) Please Come Home... Mr. Bulbous 8) Ogre Tones 7) XV 6) King's X 5) Ear Candy 4) Dogman 3) Out of the Silent Planet (I love the book series, too) 2) Gretchen Goes to Nebraska (The first two are pretty equal to me) 1) Faith Hope Love ("Mr. Wilson" is my favorite song of theirs) Thanks, guys! Edit: Wait... did Pete just name drop Jellyfish?!? They're one of my favorite bands ever! Also, I love the idea for the new show.
We are quite opposite in our lists! The Holy Roller albums, your #1 and 3 are near the bottom for me. With the exception of Tape head, I agree with 12 to 9 though.
I've been a fan since "Gretchen Goes To Nebraska," and I couldn't be happier that King's X finally "clicked" with Pete! It has taken me *decades* to really get into certain bands and artists that I now love, so I get it! When it comes to King's X though, I may be the ultimate contrarion, because while I love the early albums, "Manic Moonlight" is actually *close to the top* for me, and most fans seem to hate it! :-)
I actually know nothing about thsi band really; heard a lot about them since the 90s and I remember that song "over My Head" as being this weird and catchy progressive grooving thing with a gospel-sounding break! And also one or two other mellow songs. But I'm definitely interested in checking out these albums, especially after this show. I really like how Pete took the time to get to know the band and form strong opinions about them after not reallyb eing on board at first -- the enthusiasm on display for some of these tracks is really nice to see.
Fantastic stuff guys glad you got to the ranking. A very unique and eclectic band also maybe, a musician's favourite band. They were really popular with some of the legends in the genre like Ritchie Blackmore, Joe satriani and Mike Portnoy My top 10 1) Gretchen goes to Nebraska 2) XV 3) dogman 4) king's x 5) out of the silent planet 6) please come home mr bulbous 7) faith hope Love 8) ogre tones 9) tapehead 10) manic moonlight
Anyone into king's x should try galactic cowboys. Similar style, but still their own band. They even have song on their debut entitled "sea of tranquility"lol
@@morebeer7673 thanks. I had never heard them. Just checked them out & dug it quite a bit. I always like getting turned on to stuff I hadn't heard before. Especially in a specific style that few bands can do.
@@joecurrier4086 We played several shows with David Von Ohlerking in the early 90's around Houston. His show was always fantastic. We played that Awful Truth tape to death, lol. It was so good, Metal Blade released it even though the band was already broken up!
I really appreciate the musicality of King's X,but I can only rank the album's I'm familiar with : #1. Gretchen Goes To Nebraska #2. Dogman #3. Faith,Hope,Love #4. King's X #5. Out Of The Silent Planet.
Besides all of the talk about them being so underrated and under appreciated which is completely true, they were and are always more talented than the bands they opened for and were overshadowed by in the 90s especially. And they are completely and totally unique. Can you find another band that combines Beatles, Metallica, Black Sabbath, gorgeous three part harmonies, gospel, soul, and complex melodies. No you can't. No other band like them and never will be, and you won't find another 3 piece band live better ever! And one that still hangs around to sign autographs after every show. the most loyal fan base ever. Love these guys!
Finally! I personally think the first 7 albums are great. I tend to rank them in order of release...Silent Planet is my No 1 choice. For me King's X go off the boil after Tape Head. I am a huge fan. I've seen King's X 19 times and met them. I'm lucky to be able to be in touch with dUg via email...something I don't take for granted.
I'm sure Pete is aware that Ritchie Blackmore gave Dug Pinnick the vocal slot in Deep Purple in the early nineties. Pinnick turned it down due to his commitment to King's X, but Blackmore wanted him with no audition required.
@@jaysonraphaelmurdock8812 Yes sir.Thank you. Dug personally told me this story of Blackmore and Purple offering him the lead vocalist position. I'm sure it was flattering to be asked to sing in Purple, but I think Dug made the right decision to stick with Kings X.
Another interesting piece of DP trivia: when they played San Antonio years ago, Ritchie was ill so they recruited a young Christopher Cross to play guitar that night.
ZZ Top is still on tour. I have tickets to see them tonight in Tuscaloosa Alabama. I consider myself lucky that the show wasn't cancelled. Rest In Peace...Dusty
I was looking at tickets for their Savannah show in November when Dusty died. At first I was apprehensive about buying tickets, if they even decided to continue, but now that it’s known that Dusty wanted it to continue AND hand picked and gave his blessing to his replacement, I’m back on board. Sure it would’ve been nice to see them with Dusty, but with this being exactly what Dusty wanted, I’m all in
Been a big fan of this band for over 30 years and I've seen them live a handful of time. I'll never understand why this band didn't achieve more success over the years. I enjoy all of their albums so I don't think there is a clunker in the discography. 12. Black Like Sunday 11. Ogre Tones 10. XV 9. Please Come Home... Mr. Bulbous 8. Ear Candy 7. King's X 6. Tape Head 5. Manic Moonlight 4. Out Of The Silent Planet 3. Faith Hope Love 2. Gretchen Goes To Nebraska 1. Dogman I guess I'm one of the few here that has Manic Moonlight ranked so high. It is their one album that sounds completely different from the rest but I actually dig that. My top four was tough to come up with. All four of those albums are just incredible. I went with Dogman because I find myself listening to it the most over the 27 years since it came out.
All releases I love. I was introduced by FHL…Love it. Then then new ones thru Dogman (Heavy and love it) I circled back and then forward again on baited breath of every release. The first 5 awesome. I love Ear Candy and Tape Head next. I totally dig Bulbous and Moonlight as what it is…read the books! The music is is awesome, vocals great and lyrics challenging. Perfect mix for a great band. Looking forward to new album and new side projects.
great episode... interesting the link between King's X to ZZ Top wasn't mentioned and that is the fact that Sam Taylor got his start work ZZ Top... also it no one sounds like King's X... The Galactic Cowboys maybe came closest ... or Atomic Opera..
It's an integral part of the richness of those early albums "living martyr, truer than the seasons, no more place for lies, Cast a seed, push aside the reason Reign of terror dies" - amazing lyrics like poetry.
I'm Christian, and I had no idea at first that they were until I was reading my Bible one day and went, "Hey, that's in a King's X song!" and then "Rolling Stone" did an article about them and said they were. As for Doug Pinnick being gay, which he revealed in the late 1990s, that's his business.
Thanks, Pete. I'm happy for your sake that you finally have come around to the genius that is King's X. As Martin and you pointed out multiple times, this band had everything going against them throughout most of their career and still managed somehow to emerge as one of the most beloved among their fans of any band out there. Like many, I gravitate towards their earlier catalogue but even with the latter offerings, there is no mistaking these guys for any other. This "Ranking The Albums" has been a long time coming and I'm glad you have finally arrived.
Very underrated band. One of my favorite bands. I love all of their albums. Would be hard for me to list in order. I have seen them at least 7 times in concert and they never disappointed me. Love this band. Good job Pete and Martin.
One of the absolute greats. Too smart for the general public. And, in America, having a gay black dude as your "front" person probably scares the hell out of folks. Dummies. Seeing them live is what it's all about, first church of rock n' roll. Pete, dawg, how could you ever not love Doug's vocals?! Anyway, ya turned around. Thank you, this band deserves nothing but accolades.
When Gretchen Goes To Nebraska was first released, Megaforce Records ran an ad that had a quote from Benante saying "In five years, there won't be arenas large enough to fit them."
Thank you for picks. All the damn time. My Picks King’s X Picks: 1. Gretchen Goes to Nebraska 2. Out of the Silent Planet 3. Faith Hope Love 4. Kings X 5. Dogman 6. Manic Moonlight 7. Ear Candy 8. Tape Head 9. Please Come Home Mr. Bulbous 10. Black Like Sunday 11. XV 12. Ogre Tones 🎤🎸🎵🎹🥁 Life is better with music.
Been waiting for this episode! been a fan from the beginning, a hard ranking for me. Another great show Guys!!! 12. Manic Moonlight 11. Mr. Bulbous 10. Black Like Sunday 9. Tape Head 8. Ear Candy 7. Ogre Tones 6. Gretchen 5. XV 4. Silent Planet 3. King's X 2. Dogman 1. Faith Hope Love
It’s pretty cool how people that get King’s X have a similar pattern when talking about the songs and the albums. This was a really good video and I must say I was quite surprised to see that Tape Head was one of the number ones. I’m really looking forward to hearing their new album when and if it ever comes out.
I was nine years old when I saw the video King on MTV'S Headbanger's Ball and loved Kings X ever since. It really looked like Kings X was going to break big in 1990 when It's Love came out. MTV was really giving it many plays on a daily basis, and my local rock station 95.7 WXRC was doing the same. This band should have been huge.
I was so bummed that Pete previously said he wasn't a King's X fan! I mean this is Pete Pardo not liking MY favorite modern hard rock band! I kept thinking that with Pete's incredible love of music, he just HAS to be part of our King's X club! This video put a big smile on my mug, listening to Pete review all their albums and all the praise he throws their way.....all is right in the world of music! Having Pete jump on the King's X train to music heaven just makes total sense - welcome aboard brother! ...
Being a big King’s X fan as I am, Pete you did a fantastic job on yer ranking. You are much closer to my list than the big fan Martin. Thank you again for that in depth look at a band you couldn’t get into. Best channel on RU-vid!
Im kinda like Pete with this band, never fully gotten into them. I own Dogman and i havent spent enough time with it. Definitely a band i still plan on investigating further.
Absolutely incredible band! I pretty much love all of their output with just a few hiccups along the way. 12. Manic Moonlight 11. Black Like Sunday 10. XV 09. Ogre Tones 08. Mr. Bulbous 07. Tape Head 06. King’s X 05.Dogman 04.Faith Hope Love 03.Ear Candy 02.Out of the Silent Planet 01. Gretchen
I am a fan of their classic early stuff, their first six albums: upto Ear Candy I think part of the reason that they didn't make it big is that they all over the place. But I liked them due to the very fact that they really did have an unique sound.
Yeah they really did incorporate a lot of different sounds so they are tough to categorize. That and also I think most of their albums don’t carry all the way through for me. Dogman is an example of that. It’s too long and loses me in the back half. Great title track though, I just don’t see them as being able to make a real statement of an album the way a lot of their contemporaries did. I’m also not crazy about some of those “Beatles harmonies” the way others are. The early stuff is unique and heavy for the time though.
1 - Gretchen 2 - Dogman 3 - Ear Candy 4 - Tapehead 5 - Please Come Home dot dot dot Mr. Bulbous 6 - Out of the Silent Planet 7 - Manic Moonlight 8 - Self-titled 9 - XV 10 - faith hope love 11 - Ogre Tones 12 - Black Like Sunday (Ranked by how much I like them, not by what I think of their quality. And the gaps between them are tiny.) (I made four tweaks before hitting "Comment." Probably could have made more.)
Do it. Seen em' open for Kings X in the summer of 92' and been a fan ever since. A big sleeper. Still putting out great hard melodic rock. Another one of a kind.
I thought I didn’t like Doug’s voice at first but damn did it grow on me so many different styles and inflections he’s one of my favorite singers. I could see why he was offered the deep purple gig back then
Best. Band. EVER! Dogman sounds like King's X sounded live. The first time I saw them ('92), I was standing 10 feet from dUg's rig & his tone & their volume/mix melted my face.
Welcome to the Kings X fold Pete! Excellent show and I'm impressed with how quickly you managed to review the entire catalogue. Good job! I revisited the entire back catalogue after seeing this. How on earth could anyone not like this band!
This video was epic, thanks Martin and Pete! I kept this video for last, until I caught up on my YT videos that I missed over my vacation. I've been a fan since the S/T release. Black Flag was played on a local hard rock station (KNAC) and I caught the video quite a bit before school on MTV. I got to see them live during the Manic Moonlight Tour, such a fun and amazing band live, a must see! I'll be listening to a lot of King's X today!
I always like their Black Like Sunday CD. Re-recording all those old songs from the 1980's was a cool idea. I always thought it was odd that Van Halen did the same thing a few years later with ADKOT....
This was fun to listen to! Discovered them in 90 here in Germany, and remained the only person to really know them until Dogman, which opened a few Grunge doors. I stayed obsessed all the way thru the 90s. Still love listening to them. 1. Faith Hope Love 2. King's X 3. Gretchen goes to Nebraska 4. Dogman 5. Out of the silent planet 6. Ear Candy 7. Tapehead
I have also avoided this band forever, and I had a friend that always tried to talk me in to them. But I gonna give them a try now. Found five CDs in a box ( Original album series 1988-94) for just about 10$
I’ve heard everything two or three times over from this band, just can’t get into them for some reason, I can’t wrap my head around the reason why either
@@gabecorreia1670 Well, when Pete and Martin started to talk about grunge I feel this is not my cup of tea. But it was no mony for five CDs and some times it's fun to buy CDs without listen to them before.
@@KevinOrtega1980 I feel the same. The first album is mostly really cool and unique for the time. The rest either just don't land or not my thing. Dogman I especially don't get. The title track is pretty good but most of the others I find bland, something about the vocals and melodies don't sound great to me. Not as heavy or catchy as many have claimed.
It's a sign of a good music reviewer when they can talk about everything they dislike about an album and still make you want to listen to it. I really like Bulbous, and now I wanna check out Moonlight.
My favorite band. 1st 9 I think are essential. 1. Dogman 2. Out of the Silent Planet 3. Gretchen Goes to Nebraska 4. Tapehead 5. XV 6. Manic Moonlight 7. King's X 8. Please Come Home… Mr. Bulbous 9. Ear Candy 10. Faith, Hope, Love 11. Orge Tones 12. Black Like Sunday
I own them all, in my top 10 bands of all time that I love & enjoy. My list is: 1. Gretchen Goes To Nebraska 2. King's X 3. Faith, Hope & Love 4. Dogman 5. Tapehead 6. Out Of The Silent Planet 7. Ogre Tones 8. Manic Moonlight 9. Ear Candy 10. Please Come Home...Mr.Bulbous 11. XV 12. Black Like Sunday
Incredible show! Pete deserves a lot of credit and respect for doing this. He obviously did not give the catalog a cursory listen to make the topic go away, but really dug into it. My top albums from the band are. . . 1. Gretchen goes to Nebraska 2. Out of the Silent Planet 3. Dog man 4. King's X 5. Faith Hope Love Great Show as always.
So glad you decided to do this, Pete, and glad you got into them in the end. I always thought that, considering the other stuff you really dig, that these guys would be right down your alley. Like Martin said, they kind of defy categorisation. A little prog, a little grunge, a little power pop, a little Beatles, a little folk, a little Sabbath. They almost sound like a supergroup with Robert Fripp, Geezer Butler, Matt Cameron and 3 different singers!
Great show! King's X fans and Martin Popoff: Three King's X CDs (Tape Head, Manic Moonlight, and Mr. Bulbous) are being released in remastered Gold Disc Editions with Japan only bonus tracks and exclusive trading cards.
For decades they did nothing for me, until I saw them live in a a tiny german club a few years ago…what a great band. Thanks for another great show, guys !
Great video and it's great to see King's X getting some love on the channel; I was like Pete and didn't check them out for the longest time! At the end, Martin mentioned some ITV documentaries he is involved with here in the UK - any info on those?
That was an AWESOME episode Pete!! I agree with your ranking pretty much!!! You talked about the production, who do you think should have produced them & how would you have promoted them? Love all the stuff you do!!! 🎶🎶🎶🎶
As for a producer, that I'd have to think about, but, they were always promoted as a 'metal' act or a 'progressive' act, and quite frankly, to my ears, they aren't really either, though what they are is up for debate. I'd have thrown them on tours with Soundarden, Alice in Chains, Metallica, hell, even Black Sabbath, but without a doubt they had so many songs, the less heavier ones, that should have been pushed as singles and made videos of for MTV. They always seemed to be the buzz band from people who were really into music, but their labels (Atlantic, this is aimed at you)never seemed too interested in getting mainstream attention for them, perhaps because they didn't really know what to do with them. Weird mix of styles, kind of weird looking band, weird album covers...it's a shame really. You have to wonder what someone like a Rick Rubin would have done with them?
Yea Pete, I think you could be right. I think Atlantic didn’t know what to do with them because they did sound so different!!! It’s just a real shame actually!!!! Thanks for responding back to my comment!!!
