Wildhearts are the most under rated band in history. They should be global. I'm an Aussie who was living in London in 1995. Got into Wildhearts - best thing that ever happened. Well done Steve for the review and your passion. Not sure i would be able to rank their albums... all great in their own unique and diverse way. (Same can be said of Ginger's solo stuff!)
In the UK, the Wildhearts are legendary. As debut albums go, theirs stands up there with the best. They've done tours for the 15th/20th/25th anniversary of their debut album, and at those shows, the audience sing their hearts out to EVERY word. Wildhearts fans are so devoted and really are the best band fans I've ever encountered. For the benefit of people unaware of the band. Think Rock and Roll, Metal, Punk, Pop, melodies, anthems, riffs, The Wildhearts absolutely RULE. Thank you Steven
I was looking forward to this- but I had no idea it was gonna be nearly 50mins long!! Even better! With enough brilliant songs to pack in arenas worldwide, and more rock and roll feuds and frenzy than you could write a book about , the Wildhearts should have been one of the biggest bands in the 90s. Imagine the Ramones and the Replacements being steamrolled over by Motorhead and then stomped on with classic rock swagger and lots of sugar coated spiky pop sensibilities peppered on top. Whatever rock music you like, the Wildhearts will have something for you. From the Beatles to Metallica. Cheap Trick to Husker Du,theres bits of everything in there. "Earth vs the Wildhearts", and "Fishing for Luckies" and "PHUQ" are brilliant 90s rock albums that should be in peoples collection. Many thanks for getting this video together, Pete. Really enjoyed it,and if you get to listen to them, Id love to know how you get on with them.
Remember buying the suckpunch ep when I was 16 and playing those 4 classic songs over and over,I agree Earth vs will always be in my top 5 forever always. They are probably the most underrated band of all time ,they Always play in wales and ginger if you ask me is a fucking genius songwriter. Thanks for show Steven always nice to hear From fellow hardcore wildheart fans
I remember seeing the Wildhearts at the Marquee Club in London in 1993 and being totally blown away. I thought the debut album was one of the best things I'd heard in years and was convinced they were going to be enormous. Great to watch this; Steven did a fantastic job at describing their music and history.
If they had been given more airplay and they got hyped up by the critics then people all around the world would have discovered a brilliant rock band that have so many different styles in there album's really good musicians. Great guitars lead and rhythm
I LOVE 'The Wildhearts must Be Destroyed'. Even he band doesn't really like it. But the song 'There's Only One Hell' is one of my all-time favourite songs.
As an American, I found out about the Wildhearts in 1998 when Devin Townsend released his Infinity album and on it was this killer song called “Christeen” that was co-written by some dude named Ginger Wildheart. A quick Yahoo search later (it was 1998!) and I found myself on a mission to find Wildhearts albums. Finally tracked down a copy of Earth Vs at a Tower Records in Atlanta and the rest is history. Great band with a unique catalog. Steven’s list is pretty spot on in how I would rank them as well. RIP Mark Keds.
Hi Taylor, I just listened to a podcast with Ginger and he says "I didn't actually write it with him, he just credited me because I was hanging out at his studio I think. I don't know why he credited me, maybe he was inspired by something I had wrote but I never wrote a note in that song. I was in the video as well :-) He's a generous fella that guy, to a point" it's 2min in and the link is- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bX_NMKVrLZY.html I was always under the same assumption, I love and hate the internet
@@neilmclaughlin2347 I hated it for a long time purely because it was so different to anything that came before it, but i sort of 'rediscovered' it a couple of years ago and absolutely love it now.
One of the best bands i've ever heard. It was kinda neat that they associated with Cardiacs/Tim Smith a good while back too, as they ARE the best band i've ever heard : ) Personal opinions of course, and i'm predominately metal based : ) But yeah, great video, very informative, learnt quite a few more things about the band too. As to a tune that sums up, as to just how catchy, and heavy, and as to a brilliant pieces of songwriting to boot....the mentioned, Sky Babies!! Nice one, Pete and Steven!
Really enjoyed Steven's passion for this band. I had never heard of them but will be watching this again and listening to this band. Thanks, Pete for such great content and allowing your co-hosts to shine and thanks, Steven, for your passion and great discussion of a band that sounds like one I shall enjoy.
Nice to hear some in-depth Wildhearts talk. I've picked up a handful of their albums over the years, but this has encouraged me to go in deeper. Nice to hear one of my all-time favourite bands The Quireboys mentioned too - maybe a Quireboys show soon?
Love this video. They're a great band and are brilliant live. They're my youngest sons favourite band. We both saw them last November at a small club gig in Cambridge UK. They were fabulous.
Cant believe I seen this. I've lost count of the amount of times I've seen the wildhearts spanning over 25yrs. When they're on it. it's like a hurricane. I'm glad they've calmed down the soap opera side of the band but it wouldn't be the wildhearts without it. Such a great video. Thanks.
Love The Wildhearts and have only just come across this. I have a story relating to their late 90's/early'00's 'drug' years. I saw them at a club in Dudley, UK called JB's. Danny was in the thrall of a terrible heroin addiction at the time. After the third song, someone passed him a bottle of Jack Daniels. He proceeded to swig it all down in one massive gulp. He then started to offer to fight members of the audience, before being escorted offstage by his bass roadie and his girlfriend. They took him outside and walked him around the car park in order to try and sober him up enough for him to continue. Fortunately, the bass player from one of the support bands (AntiProduct) had previously played in a Wildhearts tribute band in his native Japan, so he joined the band onstage for the next few songs. Eventually, Danny came back. Halfway through the first verse of the next song, Danny collapsed into the drums knocking it flying. Ginger ws that angry, he threw his favourite Les Paul against the back wall and stormed off stage. The band broke up before we were out of the venue. The thing is, I've met Danny on numerous occasions, when he was with his post-Wildhearts band The Yo-Yo's (check out their only album; Uppers & Downers - The Clash meets The Beach Boys) and he's a lovely guy. Drugs are bad, mmkay?
I met Danny a few times over the years. I asked for an autograph on my TV Tan EP cover. Ginger had already signed it the previous year in response to my quip that it would fetch a fortune on eBay "Do not pay more than 50p lv Ginger x" Danny wrote on the same cover "50p is 50p...Dx" This was at a Yo-yos gig in Sheffield - Danny invited me to sit down for a pint with him, Neil & Tom before they went down to set up! For time context The Hives opened the show in front of me and the members of the other bands. They acted like they were playing a stadium, absolute stars! Since then one of my oldest friends Ginna & a newer but very dear friend JJ were both in the Main Grains with Danny so I ended up hanging out with Danny by proxy. The best was when I went out for a staff party, ended up in hospital with a mild brain injury. I check out went straight to Wolverhampton from York, got lost & missed the gig - The Professionals & The Main Grains. I was just about to go to bed & Ginna wheels Danny into the hotel bar in his wheelchair with a crate of Red Stripe on his lap "Eyup Dave, is the bar open?" The rest of the bunch was just mental, I ended up with Paul Cook from the the Sex Pistols calling me a cunt then buying me drink. Danny's brother Chris, Toshi (he invited me to stroke his trousers, I did) Ben Marsden (current Wildheart), Mark Haldor who did their videos & his ludicrously hot girlfriend - dude was a really good looking dude but he was still batting well above..& I met two of my best friends JJ & Lynsey. This all while at a Halloween gig & I got loads of people saying "cool look..." I was dressed as I always do but after the concussion, my right eye had haemorrhaged I was literally crying blood...
In an alternative universe somewhere, there's a version of me that doesn't love the Wildhearts - but I doubt it! Greatest band on the fuckin' planet, full stop.
Haven't even watched yet, but I am SUPER EXCITED for this one. A band that no one in the USA knows that should be at least Cheap Trick Famous! Am I right? I love The Wildhearts! If I had a list of underrated rock bands, they are number one!
I'm late to this party, but wanted to add 'Thanks' and 'Respect' to both of you. If I was trying to negotiate an overview/guide for The Wildhearts it would be so difficult. I completely relate to Steven too. This presentation made me smirk, smile and jump with joy, squirm, raise an eyebrow and much more. Cheers. 🎶🤟😊🎶
Incredibly underrated band. Seen these guys so many times and I've never walked away from a gig disappointed. Saw ginger and cj doing an acoustic gig in Sheffield and that was fantastic, wasn't sure what to expect with that one but it was still great. Really don't get the credit they're due
Really good, fun band! I got into them a bit late (2001, or so) when I overheard Matthew Pierce from The Unband talking about them. All of these are worth owning, but for list purposes: 8) Fishing for Luckies 7) Endless, Nameless (I actually really like this, but it's a tough listen) 6) The Wildhearts 5) The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed Stop Us If You've Heard... would be here if included 4) Renaissance Men 3) Chutzpah 2) P.H.U.Q. 1) Earth vs the Wildhearts Thanks for this one, Pete & Steven!
THank you for doing this episode guys! I'm from Canada and consider myself their biggest fan here (I dont know anyone else who owns as much of their stuff as I do). I did a ranking episode of The Wildhearts about a week ago... lol Seems we have similar tastes Steven :) i only saw them once when they came to Canada and opened for The Darkness (Must be Destroyed tour) and never heard The Wildhearts... came out of that show a bigger fan of the Wildhearts... lol
Wildhearts have been crucial (to me) for decades. Awesome video! Some fave songs : 'Just in Lust', 'My Baby is a Headfuck', 'Lake of Piss', 'Weekend'.....
OMFG !!! Never in a million yrs would I have expected this on SEA OF TRANQUILITY ! Ok first things first, I've just finished my last shift & have 2 days off so I'm off to buy some bourbon & some mother nature before I kick back & watch this epic episode ! :)
Also! Being Irish, I really liked the shout out in the video to Kerbdog! They were from Kilkenny, which is justabout 40 mins from where Im from. They had elements of Helmet, Nirvana and again they were tipped for pretty big things at the time, but it just didnt work out in the end. As for Ginger Wildheart- fascinating chap. Never stops writing songs. Alongside the immense collection of Wildhearts music we see in the video here, there is a mountain sized amount of solo material, side projects alongside all that. Its hard to know where to start with him, because theres so many songs and albums to go with!
@@TranquilityFireReid Kerbogs debut was released when I was about 15. Learning guitar with friends at the time, playing along to "End of Green was encouraging. My mates and me thought it was so cool seeing them in Kerrang! and Kilkenny getting mentioned aswell, cos we lived close to it!! "On the Turn" seemed set to take them off and running, but alas it didnt happen. Cormac Battle got another band going shortly afterwards. These days, theres the occasional Kerbdog show-Christmas gigs. Cormac himself has been a DJ on the main Irish radio station here for years,so I hear his voice all the time. Therapy? are another band that, had a great run in the mid90s. Still going strong, too of course. "Troublegum" is a great album that I think some of Pete's US audience that are into alternative rock might have missed out on. Again- many thanks for the entertaining Wildhearts video!! I was glad to see Renaissance Men held highly- that album is a BLAST!!
@@kylereece1979 I used to play my drums along to Kerbdog back in the day as well. Maybe we should form a tribute band!!?? Therapy? are another superb band. Yes Troublegum is a genuine classic in my opinion. Thankfully their new album Cleave is a stormer too!
I saw Kerbdog on this tour all those years ago. Saw them several times over the years since. I followed them almost as much as the Wildhearts. Good to see they got a mention.
The Wildhearts are THE best U.K. band of the 1990’s bar none...everything they did in that decade is absolute gold. They are still around and producing good work. Any viewers who are unfamiliar, I would urge to to listen and discover the best band you’ve never heard.
I'm chuffed to see one of my favourite ever bands featured on this channel. I hope Pete has had a chance to check them out. I generally agree with the guys ranking. Endless Namelss was always my least favourite, never was completely able to get past that production. Though live versions sound good. And at the end of the day Earth Vs is probably their best. It's joint 1st with PHUQ. But gun to head it's Earth Vs. The bands story is classic and it's a shame they never really exploded. I'd love to see a video like this for Manic Street Preachers. Don't know if you know them Pete, but their story is classic also, tragic in points but equally hugely interesting.
I saw them on the Almighty tour too! It was literally my first ever gig. I remember that the kick drum at the start of Kerbdog's opening song felt like it was hitting my stomach and id never felt anything like it.
HAHAAA.... I totally get how obsessed SR is with collecting WILDHEARTS gear. I was exactly the same with THERAPY? who toured numerous times with THE WILDHEARTS. Gathering all the single variations for bands like them was all part of the fun at the time. :-D KERBDOG mentioned were class, too. Went on a collect everything binge with them, also. :-P
Great watch, thanks! I strongly empathise with Steve's obvious passion and excitement for the Wildhearts, he needn't be ashamed - seems many of us feel the same! My own collection is not quite as extensive, but not far off either :) my list is different though. I've been dreaming for years about getting some kind of PHUQ/FFL playlist or reissue to experience the originally intended double album. There's motifs that pop up in places on both albums - and on some of what become the (astounding) B-sides of the era - that suggest what could have been that rarest of things; a mind-blowing double album. 1. PHUQ 2. Fishing for Luckies 3. Chutzpah! (Japanese version) 4. Renaissance Men 5. The Wildhearts 6. Earth Vs. 7. Endless Nameless 8. ...Must Be Destroyed When you factor in that every studio album was accompanied by at least a mini-album's worth of B-sides and extra tracks of at least equal quality... it's a genuinely astonishing catalogue. Ginger Wildheart is the real deal!
Thanks Nathan. I know I got carried away but it's The Wildhearts! haha! As you say, they deserve it! And you are so right about Ginger. The man is nothing short of a genius. Thanks for watching!
I heard the Wildhearts first on Top of the Pops when the played Caffeine Bomb, about 93. Bought every single/album since and have seen them four times. Best UK band since the Clash. Love em to bits.
Really enjoyed this show. I'm always amazed at how consistently good the material that the Wildhearts produce is. Actually went to see the Almighty on the tour with Kerbdog and the Wildhearts. I didn't know about the support acts and ended up missing them and just seeing the headliners. Still regret it to this day.
One of my favourite bands, my favourite album is Earth Vs. I used to my a magazine with a cd every month, had loads of bands I discovered through that. I actually got Earth vs from my sisters boyfriend at the time. He was working for a company that reviewed albums.
I've seen The Wildhearts live multiple times; great live act. Most memorable performance for me was Reading Festival 94 when they had Devin Townsend on guitar.
Brilliant stuff, even though I'm not really a fan of the Wildhearts. Steven's enthusiasm makes me want to revisit. Any plans for a Clutch albums show Pete?
Earth vs is the greatest debut ever. Seen them 70 plus times and they never play the same setlist twice. First time I saw them was supporting the Manic Street Preachers and if memory serves me right back then they were called The Wild Hearts. Still have the tee shirt somewhere. All the offshoot bands were all pretty good too. Jellys, Honeycrack, Clam Abuse,Supershit 666,Silverginger 5,The Yoyos etc etc etc now there's another show even before you get to the Ginger solo stuff.

Just catching up with this. 😞 Fantastic edition with Steven's enthusiasm at its most infectious. Also dug his review of The Wildhearts live in my hometown of Edinburgh. I was at that gig and if anyone doubts Steven's review I can safely say that, if anything, he undersold it. Same goes for this rundown of the band's albums. They're even better than this!
1. Earth vs. The Wildhearts 2. phuq 3. Fishing for Luckies 4. Chutzpah! 5. The Wildhearts 6. Renaissance Men 7. The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed 8. Stop Us If You've Heard This Before,Vol. 1 9. Endless, Nameless

Hey Pete, Thanks so much for the Wildhearts feature last night.. Your show has become a welcome breath of eagerly anticipated fresh air for my day. Every dayI find my self wondering to myself what band you will featuring.. Because of you, I reconsidered Deep Purple and Rainbow.. Now I have all of their Lps and have become a total convert.. my question to you is.. Have you listened to the Wildhearts yet, and what do you think?
I had a lot of those Rock CD magazines...I thought it was called Metal CD, but maybe that was a sister publication. It introduced me to some great bands... Cynic, Clutch, Melvins and I also had an advanced version of Refuse/Resist from Sepultura on one of the discs.
Hi Pete and Steve, thanks for a brilliant run through the Wildhearts. One quick comment, I believe that the greatest debut album was Never Mind The Bollocks by The Sex Pistols and it remained so until 1993 when Earth Vs The Wildhearts was unleashed upon an unsuspecting world. I now honestly believe that there will never be a better debut album than The Wildhearts. What do you think?
@@TranquilityFireReid the best came out just one year later and can be found right next to the wildhearts in the record store. it's blue and it doesn't have a title.
Completely under rated here in the states for sure! been a fan for decades because of a great friend and several time collaborater infamous here in Seattle Elvis Christ (GRADIE!) who I know did some fill in on tour with Scotts band Sorry and the Sinatra's. I remember they came here to Seattle and headlined at a great but small Club and the local opener was a local favorite and much of the crowd new it was their last show so they had a good turn out. But since Seattle crowds are often fickle.. unfortunately only a small number of crowd stuck around for the Amazing Headliner from the UK! it was a few open minded people, the band members of the opening bands who knew em & let me tag along and meet theWILDHEARTS! , and us who knew of them basically hollered out our favorite songs and they played em and we all sang em together.. it was amazing and felt so candid, but obviously the band was pissed and they havent been back! DAMNIT SEATTLE! its not the first time Ive heard a touring band say FUCK THIS TOWN! NEVER COMIN BACK TO THIS HOLE IN THE MUD! But anyway! I will always be a huge fan and will forever be ROOTING FOR THE BAD GUY! amazing songs often brilliant words sung with power and melody! diversity and unique style! I love em as much as you Steven !! and Yeah GINGER is a great dude and just a genuinely funny and inspiring motherfugger!!
What should be said is that 'Endless Nameless' sounds so different and so brutally distorted as it was basically Ginger flipping a huge middle finger to EastWest records (who he had major problems with because they kept trying to nail down his creativity) as he was able to finally do what the hell he wanted to do with the band's sound after they moved to an independent record label.
Ginger is the greatest songwriter in the last 30 years, been a fan since 1992. A lovely fella to boot well they all are, lucky enough to have spent time with them all over years. Lost count of the gigs 40, 50? I don't know. 1) Earth vs (yes they're demos released on shitty tape) 2) FFL (Fan club version) "Back on my planet" 3) PHUQ - CJ played on all the tracks, Mark Keds played on all 3 b-sides ref Just In Lust 4) White Album (self titled) 5) The Renaissance Men 6) Chutzpah! 7) Endless Nameless 8) Chutzpah! 9) The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed 10) The Renaissance Men 11) The Debut EP's bundled together
Love your passion Steven thanks for introducing me to the Wildhearts. Are you a Sensational Alex Harvey Band fan? I have the same passion for them that you have for the Wildhearts.
TranquilityFire Reid Thanks Steven yes that first Captain Beyond album could be sighted as the blueprint for prog metal. Enjoyed the Europe show today going to explore their catalog.
@@captainbeyond7469 Yes, that's an excellent description of that first Captain Beyond album. Hope you enjoy the Europe vid. Let me know what you think of their music.
Top Ten Songs - Every fan will give you a different answer. So many diverse styles. For me - 29 times the pain, I wanna go where the people go, Sick of Drugs, Mazel Tov Cocktail, Caffeine Bomb, Anthem, Sky Babies, Let Em Go, Vanilla Radio, The New Flesh. That's 10 but would be easy to pick another 10! Personally i'd suggest getting a copy of 'Earth Vs' and blasting it!
Hi Jose. I'm sorry to say that I simply couldn't choose a top 10, so I've chosen a top 24 (I started with a short list of more than 40 songs!)! So, in no particular order... Suckerpunch - TV Tan - Love U Til I Don’t - Crying Over Nothing - Dangerlust - Inglorious - Sky Babies - Sick Of Drugs - 29 X The Pain - Sky Chaser High - Just In Lust - Woah Shit, You Got Through - Stormy In The North Karma In The South - Vanilla Radio - Nexus Icon - Top Of The World - Action Panzer - Rooting For The Bad Guy - The Jackson Whites - John Of Violence - Dislocated - Let ‘Em Go - Diagnosis - Splattermania

No one asked for mine, but I'm gonna post them anyway: 1. Geordie In Wonderland 2. 29x The Pain 3. Sick Of Drugs 4. I Wanna Go Where The People Go 5. Red Light - Green Light 6. Suckerpunch 7. Nita Nitro 8. My Baby Is A Headf+ck 9. Inglorious 10. Just In Lust Honorable mention to their cover of "Time To Let You Go"
I think you should have maybe included the ‘Don’t be happy just worry’ combined EPs. I sort of treat this as their first album and might also be my favourite. Followed by Earth Vs….which is also incredible
Endless Nameless is a work of art and in my opinion is the creative pinnacle of the band. Doesn’t sound like anyone else. Sonically mind blowing. “Great songs wrapped up in an awful sound” (I’m paraphrasing as I can’t be arsed to scan the video back) makes it sound like they didn’t know what they were doing, or that the mix was shit, but it couldn’t be further away from the truth. Do yourself a massive favor- if you don’t own this album BUY IT. Ideally get the 2 cd version with all the b sides if you don’t fancy searching for all the single versions. Sit down, turn your phone off, lock the doors and crank it on a decent stereo. Then if you want to venture further down that road go out and buy a copy of ginger’s project MUTATION. Its all genius and a layer cake of madness, distortion and augmented sounds.
I absolutely love The Wildhearts. My collection is much less impressive though. My ranking is totally different too! 1. Earth vs The Wildhearts 2. The Wildhearts 3. Fishing for Luckies 4. PHUQ 5. Renaissance Men 6. Endless Nameless 7. Chutzpah! 8. ...Must be destroyed
@@TranquilityFireReid Absolutely true Steven, "21st century Love songs" is another absolute gem. To Early to rank it, though it feels like a grower. Might even edge out Fishing for Luckies.
A few corrections: Mark Keds (RIP) DOES play on the b-sides of Just in Lust. His vocals are very prevalent on S.I.N. and Friend for Five Minutes. Also, Scott Sorry does not sing lead vocals on The Sweetest Song. The Wildhearts were angered by the label's plan to release Fishing for MORE Luckies. The version with the fish on the cover IS the version that was endorsed by the band, and as you correctly state, included some previously unreleased songs. Lastly, "Shut Your Fucking Mouth..." has more lyrics than just the title.
Thats a strong statement . My favorite band is Fates Warning on Mondays and Thursdays ......Rush the rest of the week lol. Wildhearts better be kinda proggy or they probably wont be my favorite. I will definitely check them out .
Ok , ive now heard 3 cuts from the band and my first impression is they remind of a cross between Nirvana and The Offspring with some Green Day throwed in as well . It was from the album " Phuq" . Im not gonna give up on them but im more into Pink Floyd , Rush , Fates Warning type stuff .

I have to say I bought 'Endless, Nameless' when it came out and found it totally unlistenable to my ears and subsequently sold it. On the other hand the first 2 albums are equally great and are well worth owning. Those 2 albums alone should have made them major stars
