@pietrayday9915

I think I loved all their albums pretty much from the start, except "Angel Rat" - which grew on me a lot after I got over the 'but it's not extreme!' initial shock - and the post-"Outer Limits" albums with Eric Forrest taking over vocals from Snake for a couple years, which I really didn't give a fair chance to. The band's entire discography is underrated, and each album really does have its own charm. And it's remarkable how consistent the band's output has been over the last 40 years: most bands who've been around this long have run out of steam at some point, or abandoned everything that made the band fun in some misguided attempt to stay relevant as the popularity of metal waned: Voivod dabbled a little in a little punk, or prog, or industrial depending on their mood, and might take a little adjustment from time to time to keep up with them, but they always sounded fresh without losing touch with what made Voivod Voivod: when I finally mixed some of those Eric Forrest Voivod songs into my playlist with a bunch of other music I didn't normally listen to, I instantly recognized Voivod songs I hadn't heard yet, only a couple riffs into the song... the vocals were unfamiliar, but the music was unmistakable and as comfortably weird and alien as anything the band has ever done.

Target Earth (Voivod's comeback album, the band retract to their roots and Blacky returns to the band.) 11. The Wake (An awesome concept album, Rocky's debut album with the band.) 12. Voivod (Jason Newsted's debut and Snake's return to the band. The band sound picks up after Outer Limits, ditching the industrial metal and returning to prog rock but with more edge.) 13. Katroz (Was consider to be the final album from the band, includes some recorded riffs from Piggy just before his passing.) 14. Good call, Will. Angel Rat is their crowning achievement. A huge brave move for the band too. Some might consider the album a sellout effort but I think it's the band's original vision fully realized. Outer Limits gets a close 2nd and The Wake in 3rd. I actually dig Katorz and Infini. To me Killing Technology and Dimention Hatröss are top two; KT is the perfect hybrid between punk and thrash and DH is probably their most complex. The odd time signatures are just out there and all over the place (1/4, 7/4, 3/8, 7/8, 9/8, 12/8 and... 13/16, which I've yet to understand how to count properly). Surprisingly I find The Wake to be amongst their strongest albums as well, although it's more prog metal/rock oriented. Which brings me to Anget Rat and Nothingface rounding up my top 5. I do not dislike any of the rest that being said, but all these I've listened over the rest. I mean... man Voivod ftw. These guys are unacclaimed, although recognised by their peers as such, legends of thrash.

Nice to hear Phobots get a couple of mentions. That is a hugely underrated album in their discography in my opinion; really dark, heavya nd at times terrifying. I like it far better than negatron. But I agree they don't have any really bad albums. I really like The Outer Limits but for some reason I can't rate it as highly as some. Actually I think I know why -- it's missing something, most notably the killer bass and bass tone thats' on pretty much all other Voivod albums (maybe less so the E-Force albums, but it's still there). Piggy definitely makes up for it with some of his most proggish guitarwork and there's a real nice variety of songs, but that blower-sound that's such a huge part of Voivod (yes, Rocky has it too) is just nowhere to be found. Oh well, look, I still love it more than most albums from most bands haha

In 1990 i joined the BMG or Columbia House Tape club ( i forget which one ) and I was flipping through the monthly magazine looking for something to order. You would sometimes buy one and get two at half price . Im looking in the metal section and Voivod somehow stuck out . I had never heard of Voivod but they had a pink floyd song attached to them and out of the blue I took a gamble and picked " Nothingface " . In 1990 you couldn't sample music off the internet , sometimes you just had to gamble . I get Voivod Nothingface on cassette from the mail , pop it in my cassette player and Good God Almighty !!!! What the heck kinda metal is this ? Damn what an album . I was already into Rush , Kansas , Fates Warning so I was looking for proggy metal but Jesus Christ what the heck is Piggy doing ? I simply was blown away and " Nothingface " is still my favorite Voivod album . Angel Rat with Terry Brown is my second favorite followed by " The Outer Limits " . Dimension Hatross and Killing Technology were a little too thrashy but I still enjoy them . Nobody else even remotely sounds like Voivod . Terry Brown is my favorite all time producer but he didn't produce " Perfect Symmetry " from Fates Warning . Hi Pete, hi Brian, hi Steve and hi Elliott, hope you're all having a great weekend. This is my ranking of the Voivod catalogue, which i consider myself a fan of: -War And Pain-The production works at times (it is very lovely that you can always hear the bass) but it is meant to be dirty old thrash, which is not so lovely at times. It's finely performed, but unproduced -Rrröööaaarrr-This album has a better production, sinking the instruments at times, but definitely an improvement from the debut (in a production stand point) -Angel Bat-This one got very heavier than its predecessor, but it stays behind it because some songs are very weak like Clouds In My House, because of the vocals , they're not very strong. -The Outer Limits-This album left Thrash behind completely, it's very hard rocking and progressive, it really doesn't have a lot of metal (except for some key elements) compared to other albums; but it's very good. -Target Earth -S/T -Infini -Phobos-This album is very complete, but it's starting to grow some dominating hardcore hints in the music, that's why i rank it so low. -The Wake -Dimension Hatross-This one broke a bit away from thrash and speed, (still very heavy) but they were replaced by very *proggy* elements and quirky musical passages (reminds of Mastodon sometimes, they were before Mastodon tho :v) that set them apart from other metal bands. The production i find a little boxy -Killing Technology-This album finds the production totally fixed in comparison to the debut and the sophomore; still a very speedy and raw thrash album, but more elegant and technical. -Negatron-It's very heavy, but not so speedy, featuring some crunching metal guitars and hardcore-ish vocals, as well as it is punishingly technical and proggy. -Nothingface-Great vocals, amazing production (the bass sound is mindblowing) and guitar tones, heavy , proggy , memorable tunes... Very clever musicianship that finds Voivod at the top of their game. The only Voivod album i don't own/haven't heard is called Katorz, i didn't rank it in because i can't even find it on RU-vid. Will Carroll! What a surprise! Hope you're doing better 😎👊

YEP, the Floyd cover is one of the finest covers in music history. 4-Rrröööaaarrr-Actually like this album better than the one that came after it (War and Pain) 5-Target Earth--I know some wont agree, but I think this album is amazing. I am really glad that so many people love Angel Rat and The Outer Limits. "Commercial" Voivod, I guess despite zero mainstream radio play ever. Those albums, and all of them really are at least good and way different than anything else while still all sounding like Voivod. I think the first album (cassette) of theirs I got, Nothingface, was a traded for some forgotten cassette with a college friend. I knew this was something very different and cool. Then I went back and listened to a lot more, and Piggy died, and the band released the albums with his left over tracks. I like Voivod, the album quite a bit. I like the Eric Forrest years a lot. I like the new Chewy stuff. Have never been able to convince my older brother to like Voivod, which I find crazy since he was 100% metal in high school and even saw them on that Voivod, FNM, SG tour. I remember I bought The Outer Limits at the local Best Buy on CD on sale for either $5.99 or $6.99. Either way, that was a no brainer for me, and I played that seemingly endlessly for a long time after I bought it. Old to new, great band that has stayed relevant through many eras.

I think only Will mentioned it as being his least favorite. It's clearly better than Katorz or Infini imo because they were writing as a band and Newsted brought in a fresh new energy. Katorz and Infini are cool for what they are but it basically was just how Piggy envisioned and structured those songs.

Fun! One of the greatest metal bands of all time. All their albums are great, but the holy trinity of Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross, and Nothingface is the sweet spot for me. Really digging Chewy's contributions to the band as well. I thought Piggy would be impossible to replace, but Chewy proved me wrong.

Before I start the video I'll say my 3 least favorites in this order are Voivod - Self Titled(least favorite), Infini, then Katorz. Sorry that's how it is. After that(from least to favorite) there's not an album I dislike I'm just ranking it on fondness for those albums and how much I go back to certain albums. Nothing Face(great trippy album, love it, but it's not as powerful as some of their stuff), Negatron(love this album, its' the album that renewed my interest in Voivod after I had stopped listening to them in the 90's), Roar(love the album, and it's a ripper, but it's a mood album.) Target Earth(great fucking record I just didn't commit the time to become as familiar with it as their early stuff), Phobos(Amazing record that should not be overlooked), The Wake(I'm falling in love with this record, but it's still too new more me to place it higher), Angel Rat(it was a WTF record for me at the time, but I grew to really love it), Killing Technology(love it, just don't go back to it much), Dimension Hatross(monumental...same thing I don't revisit it much), Outer Limits(pure masterpiece I revisit now and then), War and Pain(this album changed how I though about heavy music. It was the heaviest album in the world for me at the time and they did it without singing about Satan. They made Nuclear War the new cool thing to sing about.) War and Pain is still my most listened to Voivod album.

" Nothingface " is the pinnacle for anybody into Voivod since the 80s . Period . Really happy to see Brian Slagel in good health , this man was our God as early- mid teen thrashers growing up in the 80s .

Nothingface to me is the album where Voivod got their feet in the studio and perfected that dissonant, dystopian sound- and really separated themselves from their more hardcore/punk start. But I love pretty much everything they did.

Thanks to all of you for doing this. I am from Québec and a Voivod worshipper. For your info, some of the album titles that you had problems pronouncing are actually bastardized Québec french: KATORZ is actually the number 14 or quatorze, and DIMENSION HATROSS is dimension atroce, or in English ATROCIOUS :)

I started with Dimension Hatröss. Concluding my first playing of it I thought, “What just happened?” I too very much like Angel Rat, not only for how melodic, harmonic, and socially aware it is, but also for how those very characteristics make it easier to introduce metal-reluctant friends to the band. All of whose catalogue is awesome. Stravinsky with a drum kit.

I was surprised that on one picked up on, or even mentioned, the reference to Jack Luminous on the new The Wake album, during the song "Sonic Mycelium". And I feel like I'm the only one who liked their cover of Pink Flyod's The Nile Song more than Astronomy Domine. Also surprised that there was no mention of that cover song.

When I was a kid back then I only wanted to hear really heavy stuff. So, I heard Astromine Domine on the MTV. It was heavy and strange, but I had to get it. I purchased it Nothingface and put it on. I knew NOTHING about Voivod at the time. It starts out all super heavy, DUN, DUN DUN DUN... DUN... DUUUUUN, DUN, DUN DUN DUN... DUN... DUUUUUN waaahhhhhhhhh!!!, DUN, DUN DUN DUN... DUN... DUUUUUN... POLKA BEATS AND CRAZY GUITARS. At the time I thought WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED!!! I hated it so much. But I was a kid and only a few CDs at the time. So I played it over and over while playing Metriod on the Nintendo. After some time, I started to love that record and realize how great it was. It's very strange and awkward sounding. My biggest regret was not getting into other albums from then until more recently. To me the past 30 years I only knew of Nothingface. Now I started listening to Killing Tech and Deminsion Hatross and love them just as much. To me (Nothingface) is the soundtrack to Metriod and an awesome record and I think it's their best.
