I feel like in terms of casting, there is a big difference between a cis woman playing a trans woman and a cis man playing a trans woman. The former is at least a confirmation that they see trans women as women. That said, I'm sure there were trans actors willing to play all of these roles who would have been great but they just weren't famous. I'm a trans actor, I'll grow my leg hair out for a role, where's my The Danish Girl?
I feel like it depends on what's the caharacters transition status, like in the danish girl it made sense to cast a man bc she wasn't transitioned in the beginnig and live her life as a man, so unless you can find trans women who only realized they're trans now, then a men is fine for that role
Do you transpeople really want to relive immensly dysphoric times for a role? Don‘t you think that could be a reason for not looking for transpeople? Maybe they didn‘t want to give that possible pain to a transperson?
I feel Nomi from Sense8 is a character that definitely deserves to be on the list, and probably an icon. A trans woman played by a trans woman (Jamie Clayton), in a show produced and directed by two trans women (the Wachowski sisters).
Nomi is Iconic, Amanita is an iconic partner of a trans person, and Bug is an Iconic ally~ If we all had partners like Amanita and friends at least as good as Bug,... *gets lost in fantasy realm*
I rlly liked the one about a trans person like at school? It was an aussie show. It was called first day, like it was about this trans girl going to school and like teen life. there were only like 4 eps tho also elle from heartstoppers is amazing
Thanks so much for this list! Video was so fun! I've got to speak up for my girl Elle in the Netflix adaptation of Heartstopper. Amazing character, lovely trans actress, and one of the best shows I've ever seen from some of the most heartwarming comics of all time.
The whole time watching I'm watching this I'm just thinking "Please don't put my girl Dreamer in jail." And yes, "Rent free" is the right place for her. 'Cause, I mean, that's where she is for me. Like, all the time. This is gonna sound made up but I swear, every time Nia wasn't in an episode on Seasons 5 and 6, when I'd really fully fallen in love with the character, I'd be like "Hey, where's Nia?" I've talked about her (and her actress) so much that a Discord server I'm on asked me to stop. *lol* I'm still a bit miffed I had to resort to Redbubble to get a Dreamer shirt since WB never sold any official merch with her. Also really glad she's part of the comics now (as of Superman: Son of Kal-El #13, for those who don't know;,and Nicole Maines co-wrote her debut issue).
Buffalo Bill is not trans. This was a point in the movie. There is a trans character in the show Clarice, about Clarice Starling, set in the Silence of the Lambs "universe." If you do a part 2, here's some recommendations: Eva from Nip/Tuck (series) Chandler's father from Friends (series) Sleepaway Camp (and old movie; I don't remember the character's name. Watch it and be surprised!) The Crying Game (a 90s movie) Patrick Swayze's character in the 90s movie To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar
Iconicc Bracket Hikari Kuina played by Aya Asahina in Alice in Borderland. While she is not played by a transgender woman, the character is straight up a bad ass.
I see no problem with a cis man playing Lili in The Danish Girl. This was before HRT even existed, and it also shows the character before transition. So it would not make sense casting a trans woman who has been on HRT (I guess it's probably hard to find a trans actor who choose not to go on HRT). Also he has a very androgynous look, in my opinion he is absolutely perfect for the role!
Check out Hillary Swank's portrayal of Brandon Teena in Boys don't Cry (1999). It's a really great biographical film and Hillary won an academy award for the role.
I’d give that movie a fair bit of sideeye if I were you. It casually erased the third person in that case who got murdered, who was a black man who was a friend of Brandon’s. I haven’t seen the movie, but… yikes
Mathilda, what are you doing not watching "Dispatches from Elsewhere"? Eve Lindley is the protagonist. You can't miss it, and it's a great show to begin with. It's on Prime.
Excellent video! One caveat: if you say a role should've been played by a trans person, I'd ask 1) Which person?, and 2) Would that trans person's acting be as good or otherwise meet the quality of the cinematic role asked of them? Outside of that, I look forward to checking out these shows you recommended and commented on.
Wikipedia's summary of Myra Breckenridge "In social satire, Myra Breckinridge (1968) explores the mutability of gender roles and sexual orientation as being social constructs established by social mores"
Mathilda didn't watch Nip/Tuck? I'd love to see her review I Want What I Want, Ed Wood, She Male ( black & white movie from the 60s ) or that movie where Rex Reed turns into Raquel Welch.
I know these are your opinion, but I feel like The Danish Girl got disrespected. Not only does it have historical significance, but I also feel like your forgetting that every transgender person was born the opposite gender that they are. Without the The Danish Girl we in the transgender community wouldn't have known if Reassignment surgery was possible at all.
You forgot one of my favourie shows, Sense8 and character Nomi, played by a trans actor Jamie Clayton and directed by trans sisters Wachowskis 🥰🥰🥰 definetly in iconic for me, in my book, jules is iconic, and danish girl should move up one notch.. and a swedish movie "Min pappa Marianne" shoud get a note too, some where in between feth and in my head rent free
Got to be jules for the win. I never thought of the sotl guy as trans, just a cross dresser. Good to see you again Mathilda. Your hair looks lovely today. Missing the funky nail polish though 😢😂. Have a nice evening 🤟
@ oh I just shrug off what strangers say most of the time. I had actually went thru a very traumatic experience just last week over discrimination and I want this to get out and be literally known so it doesn't happen to more people like us ever again I went to this inpatient facility for help and because someone didn't like me they started horrible rumors which caused me to be thrown out. Even staff members were crying for me. It's when things that extreme happen that I can't even hold it in. My most recent video on RU-vid tells the whole story... normally NJ is one of the better states with trans laws but what they let happen was illegal and flat out evil. I am just praying this story gets into the right hands so I get some form of justice.
I read ghat the actor for Unique was a (gender non conforming) trans man,, I'm not sure if it still counts as a good casting since technically the actor is trans. But that doesn't erase the trans rep of the character ofc.
Ok. Your opinions on characters are yours; No beef. But I am from Alabama and take offense to your usage of my state and region in such a manner. We do not date our siblings or cousins.
You are amazing mtilda love your intelligent videos you are an awesome person love you so much you are such a sweetheart you are someone i look up too you are a goddess
Buffalo Bill is not transgender, they've openly talked about it in the film. Why did you put him in the tier list? Great video btw!

Actually the person Buffalo Bill is based on suffered with gender dysphoria. Also Buffalo Bill shows signs of Gender Dysphoria throughout the movie, however the filmmakers have decided in later days to tell people they weren’t transgender to avoid criticism. I do believe however that it’s okay if Buffalo is trans, since Jeffrey Dahmer was gay, and being a part of the LGBTQ doesn’t protect them from any wrongdoings, if that makes sense. Thank you so much! I’ve worked really hard on it, glad you liked it ❤️❤️❤️
@ I agree, but his gender dysphoria may be caused by mental disorders or rooted in autogynephilia and trauma, all that. It doesn't necessarily make him transgender. Thank you for sharing your point of view! I hope you have a great day :)
I just watched one of your earlier videos and you mentioned plastic surgery on your nose. I almost cried. Your nose is adorable. I understand your reasoning, but don't Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing actress) yourself ;) .Also, sorry about the delay of your wedding, but best wishes about moving in together.
Matilda I do love Elliot Page like you do but also as far as Nicole Amber Maines that plays dreamer she's got to be living in my head rent-free number one 1st Spot!!!!
Your analysis should get off youtube and be an explaner on other channels. It will precipitate further discussion. There is a very long timeline of visual media on this topic. I'm older so I remember more. You left out Myra Breckenridge (Movie 1970 Book by Gore Vidal 1968), Ricky Jones in Boy Meets Girl and how did you miss To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995 with Patrick Swasee and Wesley Snipes as a drag queens. I live in Patrick Swasee's character ❤Vida ❤
The video may have been a bit long but I enjoyed a lot. I have a movie I'd like to recommend for you to watch. Or perhaps anyone of your fans Mathilda would enjoy this. It's called BOY MEETS GIRL (2014) Staring MICHELLE HENDLEY. The staring role is played by a transgender girl. I think everyone can enjoy this movie. I liked the story and the actors thru out. Let me know what you think please. Take care luv 😘 👇👇👇👇👇
Buffalo Bill WAS NOT TRANS!!! did you actually read the book? Even in the film we are told he's not trans. He had autogynephilia, a condition where a person becomes aroused by the thought of themselves as the opposite gender as opposed to actually being trans. This tied into Bill's desire to control women, by becoming one, I.E. like becoming his own messed up sex doll. Saying Buffalo Bill was trans does great harm to the image of trans people in media and culture.

Saying tjat someone is trans who is evil is not damaging to other trans people anymore than one cis woman being evil doesn’t affect every woman. There are evil trans people, evil gay people, evil straight people, evil cis people. Other than that, no I’ve not read the book. Only seen the movie and since the person Buffalo Bill was based upon in history was thought to be trans. If they wasn’t trans, then they wasn’t and I was wrong. Don’t have to be angry about it.
You did Dreamer a dirty one by not putting her as iconic. For one, she's the first trans super hero to make the big screen, and not only did they cast a trans actress, they got her story so right. Even though she's already transitioned when she's introduced we see her struggles with acceptance, tension and jealousy between her and her sister, and never once does the writing question her for being enough of a woman. Not to mention her amazing costume and she's just such an amazing character.
I find it annoying when trans women still have a male personality: postures/cusses and says only things a guy would say. a lot of femine cis women are the same. drag queens are so chic but do they have feminine mannors? it's all a blur. i wouldn't waste my time watching those movies.
silence of the lambs was actually made about me. the FBI made it to try to flush me out of the bushes with it. they thought I was my step father who to FRAMED me for a very similar crime that only I know. they embarasses and won't give me credit for solving it years after the movie - I caught em sping on me and still do. it is an iconic film like girl down the lane.
@ Ok thank you for that, but this dosen't answer the question.

@@bfontaine566 If society collapses (unlikely) a lot of people will not survive, cancer patients, people with liver, heart, bone, diseases, etc. Most people on earth will struggle a lot. I'm healthy and will be doing just fine, booo. It always makes me laugh how hard transphobes try to make up arguments. First of all, society is doing just fine, then even if it did by some random chance collapse, everyone will struggle. Satisfied? Lol. Next time, Instead of coming up with random hypothetical scenarios that won't ever happen. Study, work or do something else productive.
@ Between the war in Ukraine, the clsoure of a lot of businesses (post pandemic), the rising prices, the crash of the Daw Jones, the upcoming food shortage. Do such a collapse still look hypothetical ? People can do what they want, I was just saying that it is probably not the best time to transition or to promote it.
