In the light novel, Ranpo's parents are the only ones who can understand how he thinks and are humble people despite being smart. So Ranpo thought that since his parents treated him the same and were smart, everyone was the same. He is frustrated thinking that everyone must hate him so much by playing tricks on him by pretending to be dumb. Hence Fukuzawa making Ranpo think his intelligence is due to an 'ability' is more humble than spelling to him outright that 'no, he just happens to be a super genius with crazy intelligence'.

As someone on the autism spectrum, I feel Ranpo on a deep level, I teared up and started crying when he talked about how scared he was because I understand that...

As a person who's on the spectrum, (ASD,) Ranpo's character feels just so thought out for me. I'm sure that the author's intention wasn't to make Ranpo neurodivergent, but at the same time he has so many characteristics that lead me to believe he is. Even if not intentionally, it's well done in my opinion. He has difficulty with volume, isn't able to form connections that well, as well as other general symptoms. But more importantly, It shows how he doesn't understand social cues, and how he misunderstands what others are trying to convey to him. He's scared because he can't comprehend all of that, and it's one of the few things he doesn't understand about the world. Ranpo is such a brilliant character, in many ways. He can see past people with just a glance, so you'd think he isn't afraid of these people. But not at all, the thing that scares him most is the society around him. A detective who's scared of the unknown is such a great narrative in my mind. I went on a bit of a rant, but I just HAD to talk about the silly guy.

Oh Danny, see, in the lite novel, we DID get to hear Fukuzawa's internal monologue in the moment that he decided to tell Ranpo that he has an ability. Here: "Raising Ranpo like an ordinary person. What an astounding feat it must have been. To have Ranpo perceive his own world as ordinary, to have him think of himself as absolutely normal, without a single thing to distinguish him from others, how incredible of a challenge it must have been. Ranpo's parents managed to accomplish that, despite all the odds. With the transcendental mental skills both of them possessed. What on earth can you call that, if not love? The two of them - long before Ranpo could mature properly, long before he could stand up and face the world with enough resolve, they left this world, as if someone plucked them away. After that, his cocoon torn up and stripped off, what remained was just an underage, genius larva. Fukuzawa's clenched fist was sweating. No matter how strong of an enemy he had been up against in the past, he had never feared his opponent as much as he did right now. Holy shit he's finally watching the fourth season This is the best season I'm not even kidding I'm so excited there are so many moments where I cant wait to see Danny's reaction Tho he might be annoyed cuz the first part mostly focuses on ranpo

i feel like the whole 'monsters that only i dont understand' thing is a great example of ranpo as an autistic character, like its been clear all along with his lack of understanding of social cues, bizarre range of knowledge, and obsession with sweets, but this moment and honestly these whole episodes feel like more of an internal look at an autistic person. they give the feeling of the fear, struggle, and emotional turmoil that comes with it, rather than an external annoyed allistic point of view. really the whole feeling of having no idea why the whole world isn't behaving the same way as you when what you do feels completely natural and normal, and why theyre condemning you for acting this way, as if everyone else is just pretending and you were somehow unable to. it's kinda like no one letting you in on the joke but still hating you for not laughing, making them 'monsters'. its a really scary thing to have to figure out on your own and most of the time you do need someone like fukuzawa to point it out to you (making it no easier a realisation). anyways this has been the ramblings of an autistic person who cried at these episodes because wow. uh yeah. that's the feeling, the traumatic realisation of it all.

Ranpo is honestly my favorite character. To me ( and a lot of people ) he reads as autistic, which is why i relate so much to him

these episodes made me think that ranpo and dazai might be pretty similar. too smart kids that feel alienated from others. but fukuzawa helped ranpo but dazai internalized the idea that something was wrong with him. there even the same age when they get taken in by their respective guardians.

Ranpo is literally my most favourite character in the show. I love that the scene where he gets the glasses kinda reads as an autism diagnosis and he's super happy after cos he finally gets validation for why he feels so different compared to the people around him. But I think the light novel does a much better job at portraying Ranpo's breakdown because it literally shows Fukuzawa going into panic mode and not knowing how to calm this crying child lol (the glasses basically being a last resort). Looking forward to the next ep!

Ranpos speech about people being monsters is sad in the anime, but it’s so much more emotional in the LN. also the reason Fukuzawa coming up with a lie had such a pause is because he did have an internal dialogue, the anime just cut it. He was panicking while lying. But, season 4 is finally here! I’m super excited, I love this season

About the better writing, these episodes are the adaptation of the Light novel written by the author of the manga(Asagiri) It’s told in the persepective of Fukuzawa(the president). The light novels are probably better written since the author actually has time to think about and refine his writing, as opposed to trying to pump out new chapters on a deadline. Anyways, glad you now appreciate Ranpo’s character, he certainly is complex, though I wouldn’t dismiss Dazai as ‘surface level complex’. I feel his character is hard to pin down and that’s why he gets misinterpreted so much.

Telling Ranpo that he's a gifted was a brilliant move. Because it means he can switch his ability off! And pretend to be an ordinary person. Also, other people will not be afraid that he sees them through. Because if Ranpo does not wear glasses, it's like "it's ok, he doesn't know anything about me". 😄

Ranpo meets Oda here. And then later again just before his death. Bungou Stray Dogs is a show most enjoyable in hindsight.

Ok, but can we all appreciate how cool it's for the show to go from black&white to colorful Like we were actually looking at the world from Ranpo's perspective all this time and now that his mind is clear, we also get to see colours. It wasn't just the show pulling the black&white aesthetic out of nowhere.

Reading the part of Ranpo's breakdown in the novel had me sobbing, definitely in my top 3 bsd novels. I love how complicated and layered his character is. THE COLOR TRANSITION MADE MY MIND BLOW IT WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFULLY ARTISTIC AND CLEVER TOUCH TO RANPO'S EPIPHANY I CAN RANT ABOUT THIS FOR HOURS. Fukuzawa is just a tired single dad dealing with his obnoxious adopted son with undiagnosed autism. You're absolutely right, bsd is the epitomy of "cops are evil". Bet you everything Asagiri would go public screaming ACAB if he wasn't from a country with so many taboo subjects. You haven't seen character complexity until you reach Yosano's backstory though. I'm so deeply attached and related to her character that it hurts in so many levels. You're seriously not ready! Can't wait to see the rest of the season's reactions, it is a RIDE, definitely best season so far that can only possibly be topped by the oncoming 5th

These flashback chapters are an adaptation of the novel "the untold origins of the detective agency" that I highly recommend you read, it goes much deeper into the story of ranpo and his relationship with his parents who are not mentioned much in the anime

Ranpo is so important to me, as someone on the autism spectrum. So many characters in BSD (especially if you read the manga and light novels) are autistic-coded (in my opinion), but Ranpo is one I truly relate to, especially knowing his backstory. I was a kid having breakdowns in movie theatres, to the point where my parents didn't take me to a movie for years (understandable). As for deepness of characters, Ranpo is a very deep character. Many of the characters are a lot deeper than the anime portrays because they obviously cannot animate every manga or light novel scene. You'll see it with Yosano (and Ranpo again) later in this season. I do disagree with you saying that Dazai is only surface level complex, but again, he is more developed especially in the light novels (same with Chuuya, they are both very complex characters). Asagiri did an amazing job of creating complexity for most of the characters. As for Ranpo's romantic subplot that you want, you'll get it later in the season once Poe shows back up /hj Anyways, I'm very excited for your reactions to this season, as it is by far the best and it definitely delves more in to a set plot than it did in the last three seasons. I find it very similar to AOT, where the first three seasons, while there seems to be plot (especially in season two), it's really been building up this entire time to breach the true plot, which we're finally scratching the surface of in season four (I may be completely wrong, but based on the manga I do think we're delving into the true plot, or at least this is the plottiest that the manga/show has ever been). Anyways, I can't wait to see the rest of your reactions to BSD, it's my absolute favourite show (special interest goes brr) and you and your reactions are definitely my favorite as well. (Sorry for the long winded comment, I'm just super hyped)

So Ranpo as a 14 year old had both genius parents and was also born a genius, but his parents were smarter then him thats why he thinks that most people are pretty much making fun of him or there is some sort of rule that he doesnt know about in the world.

i said so, the ranpo fukuzawa backstory is impeccable! though i do remember you saying you liked ranpo at some point during s2 or dead apple too lmao the flashbacks throughout this series are actually animated light novels! season one was "osamu dazais entrance exam" (it was SUPPOSED to be a flashback), season two was "osamu dazai and the dark era", season three was "dazai, chuuya, age fifteen", and now season four is "the untold origins of the detective agency". right now the only ones that haven't been animated are "55 minutes", "Beast" (though thats an alternate universe), "the day I picked up dazai" (how dazai and odasaku met), and "stormbringer" (the chuuya light novel we ask you to read). when season 5 comes out they'll most likely animate another light novel, my personal bet being 55 minutes or the day I picked up dazai because bones loves dazai content just as much as they love giving characters ass shots.

Season 4 is so good! Any of Asagiri's light novel adaptations (untold origins, 55 mins, beast, 15, stormbringer, etc.) are just beautiful works. He brings such depth to characters you originally would never think are important. Also s4 is where things start becoming less predictable so it will be fun watching Danny try to figure out what will happen 😂

i’m writing this comment to explain dazais character, deeper than the surface. The character in no longer human portrays himself as a clown no matter what he is feeling his only goal in social settings is to make people laugh. rhe book says, and i quote: -“I thought, ‘As long as I can make them laugh, it doesn't matter how, I'll be all right. If I succeed in that, the human beings probably won't mind it too much if I remain outside their lives…’” Which would explain why the BSD dazai is always goofing off and being a complete clown. It’s his whole act. another quote in no longer human that i beleive suits bsd dazai is “-““I know that I am liked by other people, but I seem to be deficient in the faculty to love others. (I should add that I have very strong doubts as to whether even human beings really possess this faculty.)” (page 107) To further explain things about dazai, i believe he doesn’t actually want to die, but moreso wants control over something, as well as a means to feel a bit of humanity. Being able to die must insinuate you are living, right?

Season four will be AMAZING. I loved it so much. I love that they animated Ranpos light novel as flashbacks because it gives so much insight about his character. (I hope they'll animate some more light novels too because they give the character so much more layers. Especially Stormbringer with Chuuya. I rlly hope it'll get animated as a movie or something)

Ranpo is such an important character to me, because as an Autistic person I feel he represents the same exact struggles I and many other autistic people have. I think he's a brilliant example of an autistic coded character, the way he talks about how he feels scared and how everyone else feel like monsters because he is not understanding how other people aren't seeing whats so clear to him. He assumes everyone knows the same things hes figured out but theyre just pretending to be oblivious, where in reality they really are not seeing those things. Thats a very on paper autistic trait to have, like how I just found out people dont scream on rollercoasters voluntarily but because thats just their honest reaction but I dont understand why, I always thought people screamed by choice bc why not? Theres definitely more to it, with his ego and his lack of 'common sense' (not being able to understand how to take public transport without someone with him. Truthfully public transport like trains are so confusing, theres so many steps to it so how do people just know that??) that comes across as annoying to a lot of fans unfortunately (its just him being autistic, ableism I call it) His stubbornness is also another trait to point out. I just love his character so much, and whether or not it was intentional he's incredibly well written in the sense of being autistic. Quite frankly I dont really like you for some of the stuff you say abt him, like how he shouldn't be taken anywhere. It's very questionable 💀

RANPO MY FAVOURITE GIRLBOSS !!

Honestly one of my favorite parts of BSD is how well written and deep nearly all of the main side characters are. You can really tell the author loves these characters and has ideas for all of them. Can't wait to see stormbringer animated eventually, you're gonna love that.

Anwyay I definitely agree that ranpo is a very deep character, and one of my favorites, but Dazai's honestly not as surface level as you think. The anime makes him seem a lot more silly definitely, but the light novels really show he's got a lot more Issues™ going on in his little brain.

SEASON 4 IS SO HYPE AS HELL

Ayeeee season 4 here we go. Personally I prefer the original Light Novel this flashback was taken from because you get to see the story from Fukuzawas POV and he was pretty much done with Ranpo because well he is Ranpo. (He was very annoyed with Ranpos eating habit and was also ready to dump him in the ocean). What changed Fukuzawa's heart was Ranpos backstory where the Anime missed a very important point. Ranpos parents were highly intelligent individuals (his dad was like a famous detective) so he basically grew up thinking everyone was the same as his parents. So when his parents died Ranpo was totally lost and frustrated at everyone thinking that he was not smart enough to understand how and why the people around him were acting so oblivious and dumb. So the whole glasses scene really helped him to understand gradually that he was not at the wrong but everyone else was dumb. Thats why he has this high ego it was partially because of Fukuzawa. So even later in S2 EP (Poe and Ranpo) Yosano asked him that why does he still pretend he has abilities Ranpo told it would be stupid now if he discontinued this act

Speaking of Fukuzawa’s “anime internal monologue that we didn’t get to hear” that’s actually exactly what’s happening in the light novel! I remember you saying you were interested in books in the past few seasons and I’d also beyond recommend reading up on them

As someone with autism, these two episodes about Ranpo's backstory -- him thinking that there's something wrong with him because he sees things that no one else does, and that he feels like everyone hates him because of it -- that all hit me so unbelievably hard. I was not expecting to adore Ranpo the way I do now after these episodes.

The story is great, so is the animation. this flashback was one of the light novels and god damn is it my fav bsd light novel. I'm happy to see ranpo growing on you. Honestly, the main reason I got so hooked on bsd (after catching up to the manga) was bcoz I'm a literature whore in general. So a premise like this was a god's gift for me. I loved thinking and finding out little hints and references to irl works and literary history in the storyline, like a treasure hunt. Also this series got me into Japanese literature so I'm thankful for that too. And seeing how Danny puts thought behind these characters and try to come up with his own theories and analysis makes me want to just sit with him one day and chat about anime and literature for hours. The only time I wish I lived in America.

14:53- This scene is AMAZING! It explains Ranpo's character in the best way. And the symbolism of the world turning to full color once the President accepted and affirmed Ranpo, whereas, before it was all grey with only a few colors reflecting how isolated and dejected he felt from the world for not understanding it and the world not understanding him. This is a fantastic portrayal of neurodivergence.

One thing that I really like about Ranpo as a character is that he is incredibly autistic coded. it was left out, but in the original backstory, Ranpo has a full meltdown in the theatre about not understanding others. Just thought it was interesting.

Y'all it's actually kinda sad how Danny DOES NOT get Dazai's character writing at all! Atp I think some of us need to send him the light novels for him to read so that he actually realise how incredibly deep everything in Bungou goes and how not even a single character from the Mc to the side characters to the villains is "surface level" at all! As someone who's read all of the light novels and keeps up with the manga it's kinda hard to judge ppl who don't get the kep points after just watching the anime only knowing how weird of a direction and delivery studio Bones had taken with the previous seasons messing up the other flashback arcs that had more or less been heavily centred around Dazai too! Anyway I loved this reaction sm and I really hope Danny does eventually get to reading the pieces of art that the light novels are after he's caught up with the anime.
