You said it! I do really like the heavy blues sound of Rock Rolla but Sad Wings is diabolical (in a good way of course). One of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time and one of the genre's most important
As a serious Purple fan, I was considerably p*ssed when Ritchie departed. Rainbow's debut was a good effort. I bought Rising solely on the strength of the brilliant cover, which was beautifully painted on a classy Goldwing motor bike. As soon as Tarot Woman kicked in I was happy that Ritchie moved on. All 6 songs are crafted high class. One of the greatest 2nd albums for sure. Camel's Mirage, Led Zeppelin 2, Black Stone Cherry; Folklore and Superstition, Black Country Communion 2, ELP; Tarkus, Genesis; Trespass, Black Sabbath; Paranoid. There's a lot of very good 2nd albums 🎶👍
My favorites are: Boston - Don't Look Back The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed The Cars - Candy-O Foreigner - Double Vision Led Zeppelin - II Tubeway Army (Gary Numan) - Replicas (Electronic/Punk music) Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping Electric Light Orchestra - ELO II (Roll Over Beethoven) Bad Company - Straight Shooter
@@jamesrudd8705 if you think about it all that blues/rock is taken from others ,ripped off perhaps .But i dont know how old you are but to be 17,18 back in 68-69 when Zepplin came out . With thoes albums ...It was new and different.a ripp off who gives a shit ...i saw them at MSG in 1970 WOW what a show....
@@limomangeno Dude, we are talking literally doing cover versions. Exact same music, exact same lyrics. Are you really not aware of this? Really? It's as if I put a band together and we did songs like Do You Feel Like We Do, Sweet Home Alabama, Detroit Rock City, Jet Airliner, and others and claiming we wrote those songs. That is what Zep did. They literally stole those songs, all previously recorded, and claimed they wrote them.
My Top 60 sophomore albums (I don't consider EP's as debut albums): Def Leppard - High 'N' Dry (MY #1 BY FAR) Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny Iron Maiden - Killers Black Sabbath - Paranoid Metallica - Ride the Lightning Billy Idol - Rebel Yell Voodoo Hill - Wild Seed Of Mother Earth (GLENN HUGHES on vocals) Megadeth - Peace Sells, But Who's Buying Nirvana - Nervermind Led Zeppelin - II Motley Crue - Shout At the Devil Dio - Last In Line Bruce Dickinson - Balls To Picasso Aerosmith - Get Your Wings Queensryche - Rage For Order Manowar - Into Glory Ride Blaze - Tenth Dimension Kiss - Hotter Than Hell (CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED) Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger Anvil - Metal On Metal Radiohead - The Bends Halford - Crucible Sepultura - Beneath The Remains Saxon - Wheels of Steel Tool - Aenima ACDC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap Van Halen - II Iced Earth - Night Of The Stormrider Live - Throwing Copper Mastodon - Leviathan The Cult - Love Meat Puppets - Meat Puppets II Anthrax - Spreading The Disease Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman Bad Company - Straight Shooter The Police - Reggatta De Blanc Rush - Fly By Night Budgie - Squawk Depeche Mode - A Broken Frame Dream Theater - Images And Words Alice In Chains - Dirt Ramones - Leave Home Lenny Kravitz - Mama Said Scorpions - Fly To the Rainbow ZZ Top - Rio Grande Mud Korn - Life Is Peachy Black Flag - My War Accept - I Am A Rebel Danzig - II Slayer - Hell Awaits Silverchair - Freak Show Primus - Sailing The Seas Of Cheese Tears For Fears - Songs From The Big Chair Queen - Queen II Rage Against The Machine - Evil Empire Rainbow - Rising Crowbar - Crowbar Dark Angel - Darkness Descends Linkin Park - Meteora Diamond Head - Borrowed Time The Tea Party - The Edges Of Twilight (INCREDIBLE CANADIAN POWERHOUSE TRIO)
Some GREAT pics there, and more than a few I overlooked which are no brainers like VH, ZZ Top, Danzig, Police, Anthrax, Zeppelin, Tool, and Def Leppard. WAY TOO many good ones to choose and fit on one show!
Thank you for pointing out High and Dry. Im not a fan of any Leppard after Pyromania but High and Dry is a masterpiece. Another not mentioned is Tommy Bolin Private eyes. Incredible 2nd album.
Led Zeppelin II is one of the greatest sophomore albums of all time. Better than anything on this list thus far. Also Ride the Lightening is the greatest thrash, metal albums.
Kerry Livgren wrote the lyrics to Song for America while on a flight to LA. He never took music lessons & couldn't read or write music. So he composed all those complex prog songs in his head & taught them to the band in the studio. Wow! Obviously my favorite musician and a great man.
01) Rainbow - Rising 02) The Band - The Band 03) The Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold is Love 04) The Doors - Strange Days 05) Black Sabbath - Paranoid 06) The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next 07) ELP - Tarkus 08) The Beatles - With The Beatles 09) Queen - Queen II 10) The Black Crows - Southern Harmony and the Musical Companion
The Doors-Strange Days, Led Zeppelin-Led Zeppelin II, Boston-Don't Look Back, Ozzy Osbourne-Diary of a Madman, Aerosmith-Get Your Wings, Jimmi Hendrix- Axis Bold As Love, Rush-Fly By Night, Black Sabbath-Paranoid, Metallica-Ride The Lightning, Cream-Diserali Gears, Queen-Queen II, Pink Floyd-A Saucer Full of Secrets, ACDC-TNT, Paul Mccartney-RAM. I could go on.
My choices would include (no particular order): Led Zeppelin - LZ II Radiohead - The Bends Jimi Hendrix - Axis Bold As Love Neil Young - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Nirvana - Nevermind Rush - Fly By Night Midnight Oil - Head Injuries Peter Gabriel - Peter Gabriel (Scratch) Van Morrison - Astral Weeks David Bowie - David Bowie (AKA Man of Words/Man of Music) The National - Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers Iron Maiden - Killers Pink Floyd - A Saucerful of Secrets Lord Huron - Strange Trails Jethro Tull - Stand Up The Who - A Quick One The Rolling Stones - 12 x 5
@@markhunter8554 Don't think so...I think Moondance (his first album released in the 70s) was the third album. Astral Weeks was released in 1968, one year after the 1967 debut, Blowin' Your Mind!, which contained "Brown-Eyed Girl."
@@MrDuneedon You are correct. Should have consulted my copy of Encyclopedia of Rock before I posted. Ps Bang Records released a best of album after Blowin but that doesn't count.
Yeah, I was thinking of MO - Birds of Fire was the 1st LP of theirs I bought, but after hearing it ran out & bought Inner Mounting Flame sight unseen (or unheard?). I might also include the 11th House. Their eponymous debut was good, but Level One blew me away. Also Weather Report - the sophomore LP had Unknow Soldier & Crystal, really spacey stuff leaving Earth jazz behind.....
Missing out here would be bands like: Judas Priest, MSG, Saxon, Death Angel, Testament, King's X, Van Halen, Helloween, Tool, Flotsam & Jetsam, Magnum, Def Leppard, Candlemass, and many more....
As I went through my album collection, I gave up when I got to around 62 sophomore albums and as I did that, it began to occur to me that actually, the norm seems to have been that the sophomore should actually be an improvement on the debut, even if the debut was a barnstormer. There are all kinds of theories about sophomores and I think life and history is more nuanced than theorists often give credit for. Also, in my life, when I was getting certain discographies together, I rarely heard a band's material in the sequence in which they were released, which may also affect the way I'd see a sophomore or, for that matter, a debut. For example, I was well into Mahavishnu Orchestra's "Birds of fire" for a good 6 years before I heard "Inner mounting flame" and as much as I think the debut is a stunner, the sophomore was so ingrained in my love that it would be difficult to be supplanted, even though there are a couple of songs on the debut that are superior to anything on "Birds." Of course, it doesn't always work that way but it does on so many occasions.
My favorite Sophomore albums 1- Dairy of a madman - Ozzy 2 - Sad wings of Destiny - Priest 3 - Hotter then Hell - KISS 4 - Rising - Rainbow 5 - Last in Line - DIO 6 - Shout at the Devil - Mötley Crüe 7 - Paranoid - Black Sabbath 8 - Van Halen ii - Van Halen 9 - Tooth and nail - Dokken 10 - Cant stop rock and roll - Twisted Sister ( This isn't in order )
Motley Crue : Shout at the Devil , Sad Wings of Destiny - Judas Priest, Van Halen II , Black Sabbath - Paranoid , Iron Maiden - Killers....to name a few of my fave sophomore albums.
agree on Axis Bold as Love and BTO II... I would add Absolutely Free by the Mothers of Invention, Sailor by the Steve Miller Band, Procol Harum's Shine on Brightly, Steppenwolf's The Second, For Your Pleasure by Roxy Music, Fun House by the Stooges, and the Ramones Leave Home.
Very true about Tull -- a completely different band from when they started (that I liked!) but "Stand Up" may very well be their greatest album. I believe "One Way or Another" was Cactus' third release. And when I saw the title I immediately thought of two that I can't believe you missed ! Zeppelin II, and YES, A Time and a Word.
"Closer" by Joy Division is a damn masterspiece, and was influential as hell! "With" by The Beatles, rough, punky album was a times stronger than their girly, puppy-poppy debut. "Louder than Love" by Soundgarden was HUGE masterspiece. It cought me with seconds. They never repeated it.
My two favourite Marillion albums are Script and Fugazi. Fugazi takes it ever so slightly but it's insanely close. LOVE the other two Fish era ones as well, but those are my top 2 favs.
A very well thought out, and extensive list, Pete. I was crossing them off from my own list as you mentioned them. (I was sweating out 'Idlewild South' until the end!) Only a few that I might have added including: Tommy Bolin's 'Private Eyes', CCR's 'Bayou Country', The Outlaws 'A Lady in Waiting', and Crosby Stills, and Nash's (This one had Neil on board) 'Deja Vu.'
Love the channel. A few I would add. Springsteen's Wild Innocent and E Street Shuffle is a masterpiece in my opinion. Dire Straits Communique is superb. Graham Parker and The Rumours sophomore album is brilliant..as were as his albums in the 70s. Pearl Jam Versus is amazing...to me their best album. Dirty South by Drive By Truckers is southern rock classic. This Years model by Elvis Costello and The Attractions is another classic.
This album is way too similar to their debut. A man a city sounds like a cliche of 21st century schizoid man, and the title track sounds alot like Epitaph. That album was not a step forward for this band. Only Cat food - which is more like a musical joke - sounds really fresh. Lizard was much more interesting and innovative album than the second one.
This was a really tight, diverse and outstanding list of 2nd albums. I'd also include Boston's (Don't Look Back), STORIES (About Us)(1973),Ramones (Leave Home), Little Feat (Sailin Shoes), Saxon (Wheels Of Steel), Cheap Trick (In Color), King's X (Gretchen Goes To Nebraska), Motorhead (Overkill), The Cars (Candy O), Twisted Sister (You Can't Stop Rock N Roll), Whitesnake (Trouble or Love Hunter depending if you count the E.P), DEF LEPPARD (High N Dry), MOTLEY CRUE (Shout At The Devil), VAN HALEN (II), CAMEL (Mirage), DANZIG (Lucifuge), W.A.S.P (The Last Command), TESLA (The Great Radio Controversy), Night Ranger (Midnight Madness), Ted Nugent (Free For All),Dokken (Tooth And Nail), MAX WEBSTER (High Class In Borrowed Shoes), ZZ TOP (Rio Grande Mud), JOE SATRIANI (Surfing With The Alien), ALAN PARSONS PROJECT (I Robot), SAGA (Images At Twilight), Triumvirat (Illusions On A Double Dimple), OINGO BOINGO (Nothing To Fear),DIXIE DREGS (Free Fall), HEART (Little Queen), STARZ (VIolation),MOXY (II), FORBIDDEN (Twisted Into Form), UNCLE SLAM (Will Work For Food), and finally KING CRIMSON (In The Wake Of Poseidon). Sorry for the long list but I thought about how great these also were for 2nd albums. Keep up the great work :)
Ben Rogers - *Heart - Magazine* album (released unfinished) on Mushroom Records was released before CBS/Portrait records *Little Queen* album. Heart sued Mushroom to get that album recalled so they can finish it. So *Magazine* was their *TRUE SECOND ALBUM.* Sophomore jinx got 💓 2.
Funny you said nobody wanted an hour long video and I would watch it for 2! I believe that about Kiss too, and Queensryche or King Diamond released like 5 incredible albums in a row.
Yes, Helluva Band" rules. Love the first, but this is the one. What are they? Many things, but also heavy metal. That is what we called it in the 70's. Plus "Cream," "Circus," "Rolling Stone," & Playboy." Heavy metal was all over the airwaves, magazines, & people's descriptions in the 70's." Shows my age, but the term heavy metal was widely used since 1973, & really since, "Hendrix's time." We did not call it "proto metal." But that is a whole new argument...
Great list. For me, I gotta add: High n Dry Def Leppard Surfing w the Alien Satch Don't Look Back Boston Tooth and Nail Dokken Pornograffitti Extreme The Great Radio Controversy Tesla
You can't name them all. The dark from Metal Church it's pretty good as well, but my personal favoriete second album of all time is 'The big Price' by Honeymoon Suite.
Great stack of Sophmore albums! Some I never heard of, yet I wanna check out asap. That's what I dig about your show Pete. You educate me and get me into cool bands/albums. Zeppelin 2 and Van Halen 2 are in this conversation. Zep 2 in particular. Zep debut is incredible. Killer track listing, many classic songs on there but same goes for Zep 2. The difference is 2 is wayyy dirtier, gritier, heavier uninhibited more variety more more more. I mean the opener Whole Lotta Love alone is a perfect example and sets the tone for the rest of the record. Very influential album too.
What about: The James Gang: The James Gang, and Rides Again. Boston: Boston, Don't Look Back Badfinger: No Dice, Straight Up Steely Dan: Can't Buy a Thrill, Countdown to Ecstasy
Def Leppard, first album was less than average in song quality but did show small flashes of brilliance in places . . . . but their 2nd Album "High N' Dry" totally knocked it out of the park and permanently put them on the map (. . . . and their 3rd album "Pyromania" would change everything, but we're not talking about 3rd albums - so I won't go there)
Pete Great Job! It's always interesting to listen to someone else's opinions. I had to chime in here, was kinda shocked to hear you stating that ELP's Pictures was actually their second album, it's not. Tarkus is definitely the second. Tarkus released in June of 1971, and pictures released in Nov. 1971. Also Echolyn's As the World was not their sophmore release either, Suffocating the Bloom was, released in 1992, As the World was released in 1995. 4th release.
My "excellent sophomore albums" list... Paranoid -- Black Sabbath Shout At The Devil -- Motley Crue Killers -- Iron Maiden Hotter Than Hell -- Kiss Abraxas -- Santana Van Halen 2 -- Van Halen Diary Of A Madman -- Ozzy Osbourne Ride The Lightning -- Metallica The Last Command -- W.A.S.P. Invasion Of Your Privacy -- Ratt Slave To The Grind -- Skid Row Cherry Pie -- Warrant Long Cold Winter -- Cinderella Images & Words -- Dream Theater Queen 2 -- Queen Hell Awaits -- Slayer Pleasures Of The Flesh -- Exodus You Can't Stop Rock And Roll -- Twisted Sister Tooth And Nail -- Dokken
I have never been a Metal fan but we cross over a bit in taste of course. Supertramp, Crime of the Century, not their first album but after that incredible album they followed up with my second favourite album is still Crisis? What Crisis? (I really don't like Breakfast in America). And I know Al Stewart would not be on your radar and he put out a lot of albums before Past, Present and Future (great) and them Modern Times (great follow up)
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind Motley Crue - Shout at the Devil Ratt - Invasion of your Privacy Cinderella - Long Cold Winter Bloodgood - Detonation Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder Devildriver - Fury of our Maker's Hand Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane Fear Factory - Demanufacture Hatebreed - Perseverance Motorhead - Overkill System of a Down - Toxicity Tesla - Great Radio Controversy
Brilliant , love your enthusiasm ,you must eat, sleep, drink, breathe music a guy after my own heart How much time do you set aside listening to music ? Your hifi must be worn out !!! Anyway I just love your rants & reviews ,the great thing is that after I've watched one of them it makes me want to rummage & dig out my own stuff Amazing keep up the good work
Thanks for the kind words Brian! Yep, music has been my passion for 45+ years! Between listening to music while I work, in the car, at the gym, and while cooking dinner, I easily get in a few hours a day.
Led Zeppelin - II Bad Company - Straight Shooter Black Sabbath - Paranoid Rainbow - Rising Kansas - Song For America ELP -Tarkus DIO - The Last In Line Rush - Fly By Night Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman Dream Theater - Awake Whitesnake - Lovehunter BCC - II
Dust - hard attack, zero hour - towers of avarice, Robin trower - bridge of sighs, symphony x- damnation game, dead soul tribe- murder of crows, queen 2, Judas priest- sad wings of destiny, king's x- gretchen goes to Nebraska, dream theater- image and words, budgie- squawk, angel helluva band
A lot of great choices on here. Nice to see you included Megadeth-Peace Sells which in my opinion is their best album and Slayer-Hell Awaits which in my opinion may be a better overall album than Reign In Blood although Reign has what are two of their most classic songs in Angel of Death and Raining Blood. But the one I'm really glad you included is Armored Saint -Delirious Nomad, it is a criminally underrated album, it is a top 20 album all time for me and possibly even top 10.

I'm glad you mentioned Hotter Than Hell. Now I'm waiting to see if you mention Motley Crue Shout at the Devil. I think that was a very good second album.
zeppelin releases their FIRST rock album with II. it's got the fancy song-connect that sgt.peppers and abbey road has. forget that one is good enough, but new yardbirds played some of those songs for a little while. doors strange days is an excellent example. rush fly by nite as well. hey: howabout the jefferson airplane? "takes off," with signe anderson pales in comparison with "surrealistic pillow," with grace slick on vocals.
Graveyard-Hisingen Blues (One of my favorite albums of all time) Stoned Jesus-Seven Thunders Roar (The Harvest is brilliant) Electric Wizard-Come My Fanatics Uncle Acid-Blood Lust Darkthrone-A Blaze in the Northern Sky Tool-Ænima
Great rant! Here's my list of favorite sophomore albums: "Led Zeppelin II" The Allman Brothers "Idlewilde South" "Bachman Turner Overdrive II" Billy Joel "Piano Man" Bruce Springsteen "The Wild, The Innocent, and The E Street Shuffle" Dixie Dregs "What If" Doobie Brothers "Toulouse Street" The Doors "Strange Days" Elton John self titled 2nd LP Emerson, Lake and Palmer "Tarkus" Jethro Tull "Stand Up" Kansas "Song for America" Steve Hackett "Please Don't Touch" Ted Nugent "Free for All" Talking Heads "More Songs About Buildings and Food"
Some others for consideration (your mileage may vary): Alan Parsons Project: Follows up "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" with "I Robot" Moody Blues: If you consider "Days of Future Passed" as the debut of the Justin-Hayward Moody Blues (and I think that's fair), then "In Search of the Lost Chord" is an excellent sophomore album. If you consider Renaissance with Annie Haslam as a different group than Renaissance with Jane Relf (and I think that's fair, given all the personal changes!), then "Ashes Are Burning" is an impressive followup to "Prologue". No slump there! Maybe Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? Pink Floyd? Elvis Costello? (not sure if you're a fan of ElvisC) Eagles? For me "Desperado" is much better than their debut. And for a more obscure group, perhaps Icehouse. I could be in a minority on this one. If you move into something more like Adult Contemporary, Mike + the Mechanics. I loved the debut, but "Living Years" is an excellent album. I'll also suggest The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, given that "It'll Shine when it Shines" is a great album. I'm not sure that their debut is strong enough to put them in this category.
Definitely agree with your choices, especially Stand Up. Great album from a great band. Ian Anderson is a genius. Glad you saw the error of your ways missing Zeppelin.
The Black Crowes..Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, Motley Crue..Shout at the Devil, Kings X..Gretchen goes to Nebraska, Skid Row..Slave to the grind,
Both Camel albums could have been included here Bruno...arguably though their best 2 could be their 3rd & 4th. I debated Judas Priest...ultimately decided against them cause their debut, while decent, isn't really a great album. Sad Wings of course is legendary!
I think Rocka Rolla is underrated you've got a couple of amazing epics in Run of the Mill and Dying to Meet You, The Winter suite, Never Satisfied, Cheater, the title track, I mean c'mon!
Not saying it's bad by any means...just not a 'classic' debut in my opinion, especially when comparing to debuts from Sabbath, Zeppelin, Maiden, Hendrix, etc.
I've never seen you talk about Captain Beyond, forgive me if I just missed it but would like to hear what you think of their second album ' Sufficiently Breathless'
Great lists for the debut & soph albums. It's a technicality, but Chicago's sophomore album was titled "Chicago", but everyone does indeed refer to it as "Chicago II". Same way as everyone calls it "The White Album" instead of "The Beatles".
Dream Theater - Images And Words, Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever, Riverside - Second Life Syndrome, Ekos - Otra Dimensión, Premiata Forneria Marconi - Per Un Amico, Stryper - Soldiers Under Command. Tarkus is the sophomore album from ELP, Pictures At An Exhibition was recorded live before but was released after the legendary armoured armadillo.
