Going through a few things from this week that make me wonder why I bother to do things the right way. I needed to vent. Seems people prefer spending money having things done the wrong way. If you can handle the truth come join us. If not, move along.

Like a ship owner had problems with his engine and nobody could fix it. So they called this specialist mechanic, he tapped the engine in a certain place and fixed it and charged the big shipping company 10,000 dollars. The company complained about the high bill, so he reworded the bill 5.00 for the tapps and 9995.00 dollars to know where to tap. Keep your head up Joe. You are a great tech and customers are the worst, especially that they were ripped off by some one else but that no your fault. Stay safe brother.

Over the years, I have fixed some really complex faults on people’s cars. The owners almost always go back to their original mechanic for their next job......... I totally get you Joe. If you put the time and effort in it doesn’t result in a new customer. Don’t stop the videos Joe. It would be a real shame.

Reminds me of the story of an old engineer. A new boss came in and saw him sitting around doing nothing, so he fires him. His replacement was a recent graduate and could always be spotted running around putting out a new fire, but ever since he joined the plant it was never running smoothly. Even if he was busy fixing things, there were always breakdowns holding up the production schedule. The new boss eventually learned not to confuse motion for progress and hired back the old engineer.

Joe, My name is R.G. Young and I have been an automotive technician for over fifty years. I specialize In electrical and driveability issues. My prices have always been considered high by the local shops, that's ok I like you fix problems others have given up on or to incompetent to repair. I like you I have always charged for diagnosis. Without a proper diagnosis you aren't repairing the car properly. I just wanted to thank you for articulating what I have been saying for years. Thank you for your time in producing your video's. I am a fan and really enjoy and appreciate your work.

Hi Joe, If you see a car coming in with tons of aftermarket crap and the complaint is electrical just refuse to work on it yes you lose business but keep your sanity. Why work at a job you hate. Same reason we all do money. try to find some joy in the fact you do good work and remain calm. There will always be difficult customers looking for something for nothing. I enjoy your videos! Jim
@Jason-cu1jp
@Jason-cu1jp 4 года назад
@@jamesmatthews304 that's actually a great idea. Maybe pointing out to the customer that there is a strong possibility that the aftermarket crap is the cause of the problem and strongly suggest the customer saves their money and gets the installer to basically prove that it's not the problem. This would have two benefits. The customer will receive training in the fact that a crap product or job caused the problem. The other being that you won't have to fix it, unless the original installer admits defeat and then I'd say there'd be a strong chance the customer would be accommodating to you suggesting removal of said crap.

Jerry Kinyon: The dealer installed the Karr security system through a 3rd party. I don’t like the install, it’s flakey sometimes but still (barely) holding up since 2004. I can’t find a wiring diagram, afraid to cut the power cable for fear my door locks will no longer function.

Don't stop doing videos! I like your troubleshooting methodology films the best. I recently bought a used car that had paint over spray everywhere. Ultimately the dealer made it right. When I brought the car to the local (good) paint shop I asked the business owner how shops can do such half ass work. He said we see half ass all the time. Most customers will always go with the low bidder, the only way mom and pop can make money is to half ass the work. What your seeing is normal. Who is more at fault? The customer who wants everything for nothing or the shop who grants the customers wish? I, and you like doing quality work, let's keep it up!

Joe, just wanted to say thanks for your videos and sharing your knowledge, time and skill. On a personal note, I just want you to know how much I appreciate you. Watching your videos took me to a new level of professionalism even though I’m just a DIY guy. The latest example of how you’ve helped me is my knuckle-head sons purchase of a 1999 Suzuki Bandit that he got to enjoy for all of 4 months before it crapped out. He bought it off a hillrod who thought he was cleaver with electrical... Unfortunately his talent came nowhere near his hubris. We had twisted together connections with electrical tape, overloaded circuits, voltage drops, and ridiculously unnecessary modifications. A complete nightmare. Between your RU-vid channel and Scanner Danner and Matt on Schrodingers Box, I was able to properly and professionally diagnose and repair the damage. And the best part of all, I got to spend some real quality time with my kid and teach him a few things along the way. Thanks for everything!

Cars can be tough..... I have one person who is allowed to work on my car. I don't mess around with "modifications". End users are mad that they've been misled by a dealer, or another shop... and I get that. I had a car that was said to be a DNR by two dealerships.... I found that one person who said "We can TRY these solutions"......... I still drive that "unfixable" car five years later, and that individual who tried and succeeded has gotten ALL of my auto business outside of the maintenance I do myself.

I had a friend bring his car to "get fixed" at so many shops they replaced intake manifold and sensors etc. CEL was still on, I reccommended a good mechanic and in under an hour the mechanic had swapped a vacuum hose that was crossed and had the CEL cleared. My friend said he charged too much for the service...I told him you paid way more than that throwing parts at it. Im ok with paying a high repair bill but it must be done correctly, and no butchered work. Unfortunately I have even had sub par work from the dealer. Stripped bolts, and leaving coolant hoses loose. I now do everything on my own. Joe, I love your rants and love your channel.

Joe, don’t worry about me, my repairs and diagnostics were simple for a DIY -selfer. In my 1986 Nissan the alternator was not charging the battery plus the headlights, dashboard gauges and blower fan were not working, only the wipers. The alternator and battery checked out ok. I followed the positive battery cable and two smaller wires from it go to a harness that goes toward the front of the car to the headlights and then back again to the alternator. On this harness is fusible link. I checked for continuity on this link and there was none. I pulled the fusible link and cut open the insulation and the inside wire was melted in two pieces. Needless to say it took me awhile to find the problem.

I have spent 51-years educating my clients AND sharing my knowledge and experience with other techs & shops too. We, TECHNICIANS, have earned our stripes, and sometimes we get drawn & quartered for doing it right. But doing it right successfully includes diagnosing - digging in, sometimes getting very dirty & sweaty towards finding the evidence to fix the problem at hand. Nearly everything on a vehicle that can wear out - just quit working - needs replacement or maintenance, requires time and close attention to detail. TECHNICIANS are NOT compliant with taking short cuts - winging it - or throwing it together with poor quality parts. We know that IF we do, IT is going to come back to us either physically or by word of mouth. TIME and dedication to our craft are how the TECHNICIAN earns his living. Young techs just coming out of an iTech College will still need a GOOD mentor or two. Hopefully, they will have found “us” first . TECHNICIANS do not take the path of the pretender down the block... But we can RANT. RANT on Joe, RANT on.

Keep your head up man you're doing it right and you should never give up your diagnostic feed, that's your time not the clients not the last shop's time... It's yours. The only thing I've started doing is adding an another shop tax or a multiple repairs performer tax on vehicles like you've described. It sounds bad but people/clients don't really learn until it hits them in the wallet, the harder the hit the quicker they learn. As for those that whine and choose to take there business elsewhere you probably didn't want them as clients anyway.

I totally get your frustration. Some people just don't get it that diagnostic time is very real and with cars nowadays a lot of diagnosis involves looking up and at wiring schematics to narrow down a problem. All of that takes time. For the guy that didn't want to pay diagnostic time, ask him when the dentist cleans his teeth and he pays the bill if the dentist mails him a refund check for the full amount.

Take a couple days off brother, I felt the same way about a week ago. When I returned to work after five days off things didn’t bother me as much and actually turned more hours. Keep up the great work!!!

Hey Joe I'm a 20 + year auto repair shop owner retired now. I had same issues as you. Your into repair it right mode which is how I am. Have no idea how these other businesses survive but they do. I miss doing the repairs and some of my clients but do not miss the people your talking about. All in can tell you is get involved with an automotive association and as I used to do, meet monthly with like mind shop owners over dinner and discuss the industry and how believe me are not alone with those kind of problems. Good luck and pat yourself on the back as no one else is going to.

Hey Joe keep up the great work, it amazes me the incompetence that exist in the auto repair business especially at dealership level. The public in general don't realize the complexity of modern day vehicles as well as vehicles that go back to 2000. They are not aware of the additional electronic skills required by Technicians to diagnose and repair these modern day vehicles, and how an easy simple diagnosis can turn into a $2000 computer being misdiagnosed and replaced. These folks are many times are looking for a cheap repair, not realizing the risks they are taking. Plain and simple you get what you pay for, and sometimes that motto doesn't apply cause you pay $2k and the vehicle still not fixed. Hang in their Joe, I've seen your videos and approach to repairs and diagnosis methods. These folks would be lucky to have you as their mechanic.

I am amazed at the places that can't get a simple tester out to check a battery that an autozone kid would have caught. Keep your head up and keep up the video's you're a great addition to the RU-vid tech world

I'm happy that I have two excellent shops I use when I need to. They fix it, I pay the bill, simple. A dealer that can't test an alternator or battery is pathetic, just like the asshat car your dealing with now. Also, you need a few days off, hit the beach. I had to do the same thing myself last week.

I feel your frustration. I had a guy that wanted to drop off his car yesterday, I told him we are doing no-contact repairs and to leave the key on the floorboard when he gets here and I would take a look at it and let him know what it would take to repair it. He said ok, then pulled up, gets out of his car and comes to the office (with no mask).The door is locked so nobody can come in. I waved and said, leave your key in the car! He said he just wanted to say hi and reiterate what he already told me on the phone. He said he bought spark plugs and coils from Amazon and told me to use those parts and that they’re in the passenger seat. I told him I would not. He wanted to wait in the office while I diagnosed his car, I told him he could not. He left all pissed off and said he was going to Pep Boys where he would be treated with respect. I wished him well.

The world is full of “Chancers” . People taking a chance on getting something on the cheap. Totally understand that a quality tech who diagnoses vehicles properly gets fed up of these chancers trying to fleece him . I work at a dealer and I get job cards with ridiculous descriptions of customers faults and no agreed charge for diagnosis.once I tell the service bad advisor that my time costs the job is either gone or given to another tech to see if he will work for free. Chancers behind and in front of the counter . Great to hear a rant from across the pond . Keep the faith Joe...

On top of everything you've mentioned, we must now deal with replacements parts that are garbage as well, making diagnosing and repair that much more difficult. I've recently had two cars with misfires where both cars needed an inition coil, both got new NGK spark plugs. Misfire jumped to another cylinder on one car and the other became a no start in mornings (plugs fouling with fuel). Drove me bananas checking EVERYTHING else (Spark, compression, injector drop, fuel pressure, timing) to eventually find that two plugs on one car and three plugs on the other car were NFG. 🥴 PS: Stay away from NGK plugs (many counterfeits), use Denso plugs instead.
