A less popular request but given what you said at the end of this video, I’d thoroughly recommend listening to sabatons ‘diary of an unknown soldier’ and ‘the lost battalion’ back to back. They actually used the sounds of pistols, rifles, machine guns and I think some explosives to create the music along with instruments. They’re truly underrated imho. Side note only recently started watching you but am thoroughly enjoying your content. Keep it up mate.

To this day, Passchendaele is considered one of the biggest military disasters in history. Over 600,000 died; many of which killed not in combat, but by drowning in mud made from the heavy rainfall and wrecked underground pipes. Regarding war, I share in the heartbreak of loss of life, but if I were to describe war, I'd say "unfortunate, but necessary." Countless evils have risen throughout history again and again, and the only thing that stopped them from consuming the world was when people fought back. Imagine if WWII never happened; that people like Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini and Hirohito were just completely unopposed when trying to conquer the world.
@davidnau2626
@davidnau2626 2 года назад
And the most tragic about Passchendaele is, that it was completly useless, they won 6 miles, which they lost to the next counterattack again... there are battles meaning something and there are battles who were just point- and useless

This is one of their best songs, so thank you for reacting to this. The sadness and despair in Joakims voice hits me every time. The quote in the beginning is from the book The Art of War by Sun Tzu. The song tells the story of Paschendale in the trenches of WW1. War is a horrible part of life... but it is part of life. More often than not it's the politicians who want war--- not the ordinary people who go to fight them.

This song is about an actual event where they fought for months and hundreds of thousands soldiers died. All they achieved was one mile. Just one single mile and a house. For what? Hundreds of thousands men died for one single house and a mile that they lost the day after. All because the generals and politicians refused to stand down. So was the mile worth it?

I'd like to add to that Sabaton not only objectively (as possible I'd say) sing about "macro" events of each side in war and showing consequences like here. They also tell you about groups of people in their situations and struggles, again no matter the side: There is for example "Uprising", about underground resistance against all odds, but there is also "Wehrmacht" in which they try to understand the mindset of soldiers in the Wehrmacht back then. Also also, they show great deeds of humanity and selflessness from individuals in war, "No Bullets Fly", "Inmate 4859" and "The Ballad of the Bull" come to mind, as well as struggles of people who try to deal with the aftermath of what they experienced in war, "To Hell and Back" and "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" are good examples. To me, keeping these stories, these examples of goodness so to say alive, is not the same as glorifying war. ...good reaction, too. I really liked the part about musical storytelling! Oh an btw, the songs I mentioned here that you haven't checked out already, I can definitely recommend :)

I'm a little late here but this song is about the Battle of Passchendaele, it was a major compaign in World War 1 between 31st of July and the 6th of November 1917. This campaign was to take a vital railroad junction from The German Empire, it was an absolute failure for The Allies (even though they did take it in November) costing more than 500,000 lives for more or less 6 miles worth of land.

@@JoJoLewis if anything, their take on Gallipoli is more wholesome, while still being a heartbreaking one at the same time. They take the pov of a speech attributed to Mustafa Kemal Attaturk, at the time commander of the Ottoman force at Gallipoli, where he too regarded the battle as pointless and accepted the ANZAC soldiers as "their own sons" and somewhat console the mothers who just lost their children in that futile battle

Taking the question literally, it costs millions in munitions, millions to rebuild the wrecked area, millions in missed taxes due to the 80,000 lives it took to take a mile.. But honestly, the money doesn't matter, it's the amount of people that's staggering. Surely you know a town/city/neighborhood within which 80,000 people live? Imagine you'd have to sacrifice that entire place for 1 mile gained? It's just so much death for so little gain. And what did they gain? 6 miles of razed terrain on which no house stands and no crops can grow? Great..

If you think that was upsetting, you should see the Sabaton History video on it. Passchendaele was just such a spectacularly pointless meat grinder. Over half a million casualties in some of the worst conditions imaginable, even by the standards of World War I, all to move the front line about six miles. To put that in perspective, for every one man killed or wounded, the line moved a little over 0.72 inches on average (at least based on the numbers I used). It was insane.

New to the channel, but i agree with what you said; Sabaton do not glorify war. They are CHRONICLERS of history and music is just their medium for talking and teaching history. You hit it on the head. Well done Sir. And as a veteran myself, i can confirm there is no glory in war, but there IS honor in wearing a uniform and serve so others don't have to. Making that sacrifice so it does not fall on your own loved ones, there is honor in that. Sadly, its just a very thin margin between the two.

He met a tragic end unfortunately) Blood of Bannockburn (Robert the Bruce's victory over an English force that far outnumbered his own Scottish forces. Banger of a song with actual bagpipes!)

As always, great reaction, my man!) regarding this Sabaton song, it is one of my absolute favorites on The Art Of War album ( take into consideration, that The Art Of War is one of my favorite albums in Sabaton's whole discography) and musicianship are over the top in Sabaton))) And over the years (I discover Sabaton in 2016) I developed a pretty bizarre way of listening to Sabaton's music: I always prefer listening to albums from the latter part of discography, from The Art Of War (2008) till The Great War (2019) and then such albums as Fist For Fight (2001) which is a compilation of two demos that Sabaton made in 1999 and 2000, Primo Victoria (2005) which was the Sabaton's first war-themed album and Attero Dominatus (2006). I often exclude their album Metalizer (2007) from this list because it is just a rework of some songs from their 2001 album with only two new songs 7734 and Thundergods (my only favorite songs from the Metalizer album) and one cover - Jawbreaker (JudasPriest cover). My next suggestion will be Japanese metalcore band Crossfaith with their songs Monolith, Omen, Countdown To Hell, or Jagerbomb) Believe me, you love this band straight away)) Their energy is mindblowing))

Or, for that matter, Great War, En Livstid I Krieg, Cliffs of Gallipoli, or half the rest of their discography?! They do a great job of honoring the legends on both sides that deserve honor. Glorify the great men that did good for their land and their people. But the damn well condemn the wars themselves for the pointless bullshit they were.

So, here is the wiki article about this battle, you will... well, you won't enjoy it. :) About the "Roads and houses - all is gone" part, there is an aerial photo before and after the battle about the village of Passchendaele ("At the fields of Passchendaele" part). In short, this was the third battle of Ypres (in the second, they used poison gas for the first time in history), and it is infamous for it's battlefields covered in very thin, and very deep mud, where countless young soldiers drowned, and died in. That was mostly caused by the very long artillery fire, what teared the land, and destroyed the soil, like no ploughing could ever, and the weeks of gunning and mortaring caused so much dark clouds, it nearly constantly rained. So 1+1=2, it created so much mud, it was like a horror-swamp. Just check the pictures in the wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Passchendaele

If this hit you then you couldn't watch the Canadian WWI documentary called "For King and Empire." It can be found on RU-vid. As it follows Canadian soldiers through the Great War in PAINSTAKING details from first hand accounts of Canada's unsuspecting soldiers. The Price of a Mile to a Canadian such as myself hits really hard as Canadian soldiers where in the Ypres Salient from day 1 and was where a Majority of our 61,000 casualties would meet there end. It hits as hard as Sabaton's rendition of Canadian Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields. As Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae the writer of "in Flanders Fields" died in 1918 and never made it back to Canadian soil.

Just ran across this. Sabaton popped up on my RU-vid about a month ago, Being a Veteran, I was amazed at the story these guys tell. What an awesome way to make music by getting a History lessen. Don't forget to watch their Sabaton History . It explains the songs.

“And as the men crawled/the general called/ and the killing carried on, and on” that’s my favorite line from the song, showing how no matter how much death was happening, the leaders kept pushing their men on, leading to even more senseless death.

And they say it in the video from Bismarck at the "war knows no nation this song is dedicated to all those who lost their lives in the battle of the Atlantic" they don't pick sides because at the end of the day they both made great losses not a single soldier wanted to be there on the battlefields

This is the First World War, in The Third Battle of Ypres, the Battle at Passchendaele that they mention in the song, the Price of a Mile was 848000 lives, British/French and German.

@@JoJoLewis Well, a guy called Gavrilo just had to shoot a man and his wife in Sarajevo in 1914. Passchendaele is bad, but the worst of it was the Battle of Somme. 1 Million Sixtytfive Thousand Men died there, in a battle, history within 10 years of it having happened deemed valueless. That's over the entire nine months that is 4500 men a day dying, by being shot, by get caught on the razorwire, blown by artillery to vapor, gassed, drowned in mud, and more. We've seen two of these bloody things, this is why 90% of Europe doesn't want anymore war.

Glad to see someone really enjoying sabaton. Seems like you have done some of their more emotional songs. If you want a headbanger and somethign that sweeps you up on your feet, try: Ghost Division, Screamign Eagles, Resist and Bite, Sparta.

I like how they specifically pointed out that there was no price for a mile. As long as the general thought that he could capture a few dozen yards with 1 more trench, he was perfectly ok with expending the whole male population of his country.

We're the lucky ones to have lived during "The Long Peace" as it's been called. Revel in it. Get drunk. Skip a rock. Fly a kite. Laugh -- for the millions. That's my perspective. But, then, I've been around longer than the beetles -- not the band, but the insect. ••• Thanks! PEACE!!! (-:

Good that another rector understands that sabaton is basicly antiwar, only showing either the human side in wars of heroes and the typical soldier, or the insane stuff they were made to suffer through.

What i love about sabaton is they are not trying to glorify things (even though people think that) As you said mate. It's more about paying respects to the people that lost their lives and the things they had to do. I think there is always a divide/misunderstanding with a lot people, war is shit but it doesn't mean it can't bring out the best in people, or show people were people on both sides.

The battles of World War I were bloody. In one day, 40,000 people could have died. And it has cost as much as 1,000,000 people to shift the front line 6 miles. And it's all in mud up to the waist. Where the dead bodies were under the layer of mud. For months people stayed in the trenches where the water reached their knees. And the landscape was gray and plain. After 6 weeks of artillery fire, there was nothing. Even the stumps of trees

Thing to remember about WW1 the equipment out paced the tactics used. Some how expecting to beat a enemy by throwing your men into the sights of a machine gun would change much. Not mention always being wet. Fighting off the rats feeding off the dead, and leaving with the lice. We as Americans have been privileged to not have modern war fought on our home soil.
