The weather was so bad during this whole campaign that everything was just mud. In the Sabaton history episode (I think it was from there at least) they have a comment from one of the surviving soldiers saying something along the line: "The worst thing was when you all of a sudden got a solid footing in all that mud, because you knew that the only solid things there were the corpses of other soldiers."
This song really captures the horrors of trench warfare in WW1, where advances in war machinery combined with the total stupidity of the generals resulted in a stalemate that was a meat grinder to the common soldier. Sabaton songs have the ability to just reach in and twist your heart in despair while at the same time making you proud of the heroism and valor of the soldiers caught in this insanity. For Christmas you have to do "Christmas Truce" by Sabaton. Another Sabaton song that takes place at Christmas is "No Bullets Fly." Do the animated story video as it explains the backstory to the song quite well and has a nice twist at the end. Great reaction, stay safe, keep rocking.
It heights the question of just why did they keep on attacking the same way in the same place. Everything was destroyed and due to the amount of chemicals many of these battlefields are considered toxic for the next 40 years atleast.
yeah this is a fan made video using footage from "Passchendale" (2008) a Canadian War movie this battle was also known as Third Battle of Ypres the fighting was extremely tough esp do too the mud and water filled craters. another Sabaton History worthy to watch. some of the fan made video's are real good esp for the songs that Sabaton doesn't have video's for.

Sabaton has no problem with fans making their own music videos for their music ( The music video for the song 40 to 1 was created by a fan before it became the official music video ) . But back to the topic. Fragments of the film PASSCHENDAELE: THE THIRD BATTLE were used for the music video. 2008 Canadian Film. One of the themes of the film is the trench legend that the Germans crucified one of the Canadian soldiers in their positions. What happens in the film following an accident. But how, what and when I recommend watching the movie.
I don't know about that particular thing, but it sounds like propaganda. Given what I've learned, the soldiers would've executed everyone involved in said crucifixion (assuming it's a normal soldier) and presented that information to the Canadians

Great credit to Sabaton for teaching history! As a suggestion, try *The Warning* - 3 sisters with deep roots in classic hard rock, with great lyrics and songwriting. Try 'Evolve', 'Disciple', and 'Error' for some of their new stuff.
Do you remember the 50s Western Movie Star Audie Murphy? He was a 1st. LT of 3rd Inf. Div in WWII and received the MOH...the original Video of "to hell and back" by Sabaton is hard to watch, but one of their most iconic songs so far!

This is the battlefield in Ukraine right now. Miles on miles of open farm fields and trench lines in the mud. Advancements are usually half a mile by half a mile, on both sides. Artillery is more precise and devastating, but far fewer of them and much less shells available. The videos from spotter drones of the battles are quite horrifying, soldiers of opposing sides just a few feet from each other at times. Defence of your homeland and people comes at a steep cost still.
I have relatives from my wife's family fighting for Ukraine right now near Ternova. They tell me the fighting there is more fluid but they are having to dig in as the Russians counterattack.
Hopefully peace will be made soon. But at least there's no chemical or gas weapons being used. Just normal people being bombed and shot and left to bleed to death.

World War 1 - Meat Grinder. Literally . The incompetence of commanders who were mentally still in the 19th century in a clash with machine guns, artillery and tanks often led to the death of hundreds of thousands of soldiers. In order to move the front by 2-3 miles, the commanders lost between 100,000 and even 1 million soldiers. In the Battle of the Somme in just one day, the British lost a total of nearly 57,500 men. At Arras they moved the front a few miles at a cost of a total of 150,000 men, while the Germans lost 100,000. In the summer they made an attempt to capture the Belgian village of Passchendaele. After 3 months of an offensive in sticky mud full of craters from shell explosions flooded by deep water, in which thousands of soldiers drowned, they took it. In November, the attack took place at Cambrai. The Allies advanced about 10 miles. The attackers and defenders lost a total of over 85,000 soldiers.
This video really captures the brutality - just expanses of wasteland and bodies, fighting with shovels, bayonets, fucking rocks whatever you need to survive to fight the next person as you endure a real life infinite enemies scenario.

Hi, greetings from the Netherlands. I enjoyed you reaction. Sabaton is a great band with many interesting songs, alway accompanied by some good melodies. Your reaction made me wonder if you've ever listened to Nightwish. If not, you may want to check them out. They are a band from Finland with a Dutch singer, Floor Jansen. She has one of the best female voices in metal today. Fun fact: Floor is married to Sabaton's drummer, Hannes Van Dahl! 😊 None of the Nightwish songs are alike. There are epic and melodic songs, but they can also go really heavy on you (like in the one I’m recommending now) and the next song could be very celtic sounding or even jazzy. Their music is exceptionally well composed and arranged. Their musicality is outstanding and so is their lyrical content. Nightwish is best appreciated LIVE. Give the song ‘Romanticide’ a try. It was recorded at Wacken 2013, in front of 82 000 people. Sabaton are masters in storytelling. Every song they make tells a story about a historical event. Sometimes it hits you hard cause the subject are tough.
Everything I have read about WW1 think I would rather take my chances in a fighter plane. Neither was a great place to be. But at least you where not living in a mud pit.
It's estimated that roughly over 600,000 troops died trying to take that mile; and that mile was lost the next day. Passchendaele went down in history as one of the biggest military screw ups in world history because of how many men died over such a pitiful stretch of land. And what's worse is a decent number of those men died, not from combat, but from drowning in mud. Between the heavy rain and the damaged water pipes below, whole patches of mud acted like quicksand. I have the movie Passchendaele. One thing that was addressed was the media claiming enemy troops crucified people to trees and the sides of barns. There was never any proof of that happening in the war, and was dismissed as fake news. Here, one Canadian made it to the German trench, but an artillery blast from his own side knocked him into barbed wire that bound him against a shattered gangplank. It looked just like a crucifix. The sight of it stopped the battle for several moments (in the movie), and the Germans allowed one man to cross over and carry him back.
Flanders,somme and other conflict with close quarters combat where hell I know at the somme which I've visited my great grandfather faught at they took less than a mile some days only a few feet before being pushed back and it went on like that for months of course gas broke the stalemates at certain points
This is the battle of Passchendaele this is where Canada first saw action in World War One. fun fact the Canadians were known as storm troopers of World War I. They were so efficient in killing Germans. They never took prisoners and they were told that they cannot kill wounded so instead they would make sure to kill them before they could surrender also, many of them did not care so the killed the wounded and many generals of the Canadian army Actually bragged about the ruthlessness of their soldiers. Also, the Geneva convention is highly put in place because of Canadian World War I soldiers in the world war one truce of Christmas of the second year when Canada first showed up they shot to Germans in the head when they were trying to show the truce and then threw over canned food. Eventually they threw over grenades which were already pulled within those canned food, and when the soldiers ran up to grab it, they would open fire whatever food they had grabbed, it would blow up and kill them.
Passchendaele really was a horrible place during the first world war. The conditions of the area were obviously terrible, and only photographs of Passchendaele could indeed illustrate just HOW awful they were. Early on during the Battle of Passchendaele, there were torrential rains that would go on for ages and that rain caused the trenches to flood and become extremely muddy. Soldiers were often knee or waist-deep in the mud and water and it would take several exhausting hours to travel short distances. It was so heavily bombed by artillery that the entire village of Passchendaele was completely wiped from the map, and the bombing was so severe that maps were generally unhelpful because the actual terrain looked so different from what was on the map. While it usually took two men to carry a stretcher, it would take anywhere from 4 to 6 to carry a single stretcher in Passchendaele because the conditions were so awful. There were many instances of the wounded and dead just...falling into the muddy water and never being seen again. Those who sank into the depths of Passchendaele's battlefield were never recovered and are still there today, and an estimated 42,000 to 43,000 men are still there. According to the Sabaton History channel (sabaton's official channel where they discuss the IRL history behind their music), there are accounts from soldiers who say that you would KNOW when you stepped on a body that sank into the water because it was more solid than the muddy ground. It was said that you could feel the surface below your foot "sink" as air from inside the stomach was pushed out and you could hear a gurgling sound as the air left the body's mouth. Now for some math. According to Sabaton History, the distance advanced during the Battle of Passchendaele was just 6 miles. All that endless fighting in some of the most terrible conditions you could imagine, for 6 miles of progress. Honestly, by the time the battle ended, the Germans and the British were exhausted and it likely ended because neither side could physically fight anymore. According to the website of the Canadian War Museum, the British forces (which included soldiers from Canada, New Zealand, and Australia) had an estimated 275,000 casualties while the Germans lost 220,000. This adds up to approximately 495,000 deaths from both sides. If we did the math, the literal "price of a mile" mentioned in the song would be 82,500 men PER MILE. If we calculate this with the 600,000 casualties mentioned in the video that you watched, then it would be 100,000 deaths per mile. WW1 can only really be described as a meat grinder, and there are several other battles that, in similar vain to the Battle of Passchendaele, were incredibly devastating with little to no progress made at the end of it. The Battle of Gallipoli and the Battle of Verdun being just a couple which Sabaton have also made songs about.

East from Ukrainian city Bakhmut it happens again. Two sides in trenches, gunshot from each other, knee deep in mud doing deadly wrestling. Russians spending waves of conscripts into meatgrinder. And artillery hammering day and night. Equipment is diffrent but warfare almost same. Ps: in battle song is about there was one day when 40 000 British soldiers died in try to break German lines. So, in the end there was probably lots of lives lost for each inch gained. Do not know how big were US loses in whole Vietnam war but probably few days of Pashendale offensive would equal that with ease.
Little tidbit of note. Because the German army were the invaders to be pushed out, they were able to choose their ground to dig in. This meant, unfortunately, that the British and French got the worse terrain to dig in to defend. The Germans got to choose land above the water tables, so while the trenches did suck, the other side ended up further down and as a result their trenches were filled with water and mud. I don't remember what section of France it was in, but the Germans had dug in and made trenches leaving the British to dig in to defend. The area they were in had been marshland in older times and was finally emptied by drainage canals, and once these had been destroyed by the shelling the land reverted to the marsh it once was leaving the British almost literally drowning in mud
