Raphidaphora Tetrasperma Care and Propagation (with updates)

In this video I go over the care and propagation of the raphidaphora tetrasperma or also known as the mini monstera. An accident broke my plant in half, but no sweat because I know I can propagate this into multiple plants and in about a year time I’ll have 10 of these at full size. I show you a 5 weeks update on the propagation and you can see just how fast growing this plant is! They are an easy houseplant with minimal care and can tolerate a wide variety of conditions. They also look good for styling your interior space.

My Tetrasperma is huge. It just keeps growing. Even though I have neglected it many times.. No water for like 4 months. And yet still it just keeps going. No brown or yellow leaves just lovely green. Strongest plant I EVER had by far. It's like a monster! Right now it reached 3 meters. I've had it for maybe 3 years. Never changed soil either poor plant. I do give it rainwater that I collect instead of tap water. I had to screw in hooks on the ceiling and used old copper wire (from wired lights that stopped working) to keep it all hanging properly. Now it looks like a tall creature that wants to grab you 😂. I will propagate it soon. I heard its best to do in summer. I'm in Western Eu and it's still cold here though inside it's warm of course so I don't understand why the seasons make a difference if the weather inside the home is always about the same. Kinda nervous about propagating. Hope I don't mess it up.

Hi Sophie, I don't know where you from, but in Germany they go fo 10€ -20€, and I had in 10 years no pests on it, and they can handle mostly everything. They can take full south sun if you water them enough, it grows very fast then, they survive in low light, but they get laggy then. And a interesting thing is, if you let some vines grow horizontal, you with time from the grow points new vines !!! And they get thicker then too. I propagate them allways in water, i just put them in water and forget about it, thats all, how more light you give the cuttings, how fast you get roots. Shipping works pretty good too. So I really would say give this nice plant a try, you will love it, I'm sure. 💚💚💚

Hi Seaaan!!! Rewatching your videos again and again on a sleepless night. 😅 I have a question I've been meaning to ask after hearing you talk about roots: What are your thoughts on root pruning rootbound aroids? For instance, when space is limited like small apartments and despite badly wanting to upsize a pot, would it be a bad decision to prune roots? Will this shock/kill aroids like the RT, MD, rare philos, etc? Let us know if you've experienced something like this 😅 I've been looking up to your videos the most and really love hearing about your insight. 😅🙏🏼

Hi Sean .. ive been following u for quite a while and loving all your videos. Ive got some qustion though ... firstly , in moss propagstion how do you water them , just flow the water throughly or u spray it ? Cos moss tends to keep the water in moss .. so it wont get root rot .. and secondly in shade and semi indoor area with ypu aroid mix , how often would you recomend on watering ? Thx a lot bro .. really apreciate it !!
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Hello, first of all I leave my moss propagations out in the rain... so I must admit they are overwatered all the time and dont recommend to anyone to do this. You should only mist sphagnum moss and keep them on the dry side but humid and slightly damp as this is what will encourage the roots.

I don’t want to kill them 😁 I keep the RT inside my apt, next to a balcony window, facing east. - How often should I water them? - Is 18cm diameter pot big enough? - Any recommendation in fertilizing them? (i.e how often, what brand). Thank you so much, love your videos!
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
How often you should water them depends on your temperature, light levels, humidity, airflow, potting mix used, pot size, pot type, and age of plant 😀 I would pay attention to their leaves and media to see about watering. The media need to be bone dry between watering. Dry crisphy leaves or droopy leaves would suggest underwatering. Yellowing leaves or excessive “sweating” of water from the leaves will suggest overwatering. Check out my fertilizer video to see some guide on fertilising 😀

The tetrasperma has been on my wish list for months... i regret not buying it before the pandemic, the prices went up and it become kinda hard to find ='(. Anyway, the roots from the water and spaghnum prop were beautiful! Do you ever use root hormones for cuttings? or just let the plants do their thing

Their leaves get larger when they climb. Also good light and some nutrients help ❤️

How often did you water the ones in sphagnum moss during that 5-week propagation period? thank you! 💚🌿😊
@onlyplants

Lightly every day unless it rains. Do not let the moss get compacted with water. Keep it airy and fluffy.

Would it be possible to hang this type of plant? Super helpful video! 🪴

You can but if they hang down their new subsequent leaves will diminish in size. Which is not a bad look I think.

will sphagnum moss propagation work as a rooting method for a plant that i just saved from root rot? had to cut a lot of its root system off (including a node root), and i've used rooting hormone on it and put it back in aroid soil mix. only been a few days so far, but after watching this video, your success in sphagnum moss has got me thinking. what are your thoughts?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Sphagnum moss is safer than soil for sure. Though the most sterile medium is still the perlite. I have never needed to propagate anything in perlite though... Do try out sphagnum moss propagation the moisture and airiness of the medium will surprise you.

@@onlyplants thanks Sean. So given that the plant (a small monstera deliciosa) has been in soil for four days now, should i uproot it and move it to sphagnum? Or do i do it after a few more days? Thanks so much!
@peacegirl164
@peacegirl164 3 года назад
sean could you explain those node growth points a little more in detail? i bought a brasil cutting a month ago and just potted it up but there’s no new growth (only roots) and the petioles are flat, not round. does that mean they already put out that new shoot before and can’t again?

Hello!! I have a few questions. Can you propagate a tissue culture one? Also does it matter what kind of peppermint oil you use?
@onlyplants
@onlyplants 3 года назад
Yes you can propagate TC plants. Propagated plants have the exact same genetics as the parent plants. I’m not familiar with different types of peppermint... I just get the generic ones sold by my essential oil supplier.

How often do you water? Mine is in a 6in terra cotta pot. Its doing pretty well. I've had it for 4mos now, and it dries out quickly. I water it weekly. I must be doing something right!

I have one that I water daily, and one that I water every 2 weeks. It really depends on their environment, pot, media, and plant age.
