To avoid the cutter from falling through the collet, just put some rubber ring (like an o-ring) on the bit above the collet. This is what the RapidChange manufacturer recommends.

Unfortunately almost none of my bits have enough shank to stick above the top of the collet to get an oring on them. Many of the smaller ones are actually below the surface of the collet top.

Great job on the reviews on the ATC. We had them on my show when I found out about the product and am really impressed. We will be talking about your videos tonight

Great review! I just got mine up and working yesterday. I have an 8 pocket on my Shopbot PRS I converted to Centroid. Shopbot has the same issue of spindle reversal and speed control so I had to go to Centroid to use Rapid Change ATC. I wonder if this catches on, like I believe it will, if Shopbot and others might be willing to do the add on relay etc. to allow for it. As these catch on I think anyone who does a volume of cnc woodwork will feel their machine isn't complete without one. Thanks again.

Thanks. So how do you like Centroid? AVID is now switching over to that from Mach4 and the ESS board (for stability reasons mostly). I've ordered an upgrade kit so I will be trying it out soon. I haven't had much time to put the RC ATC to use after I did the testing, but Centroid seems to have some good ATC support built in so I think it should be easy to use once I get my new controller on line.

@@JNWoodworks I do like Centroid it seems very stable and capable. Having been in Shobpot land for 20 years its a bit like learning a new language, but I'm wrapping my brain around it. For me it involved getting a spindle and VFD and setting up water cooling, building a control box etc. So a lot to juggle all at once. I ran into a glitch on the ATC install (due to a 2nd party probe app I had installed) but Don and James helped me track it down. Their customer support is amazing. Waiting on a longer cable so still haven't hooked up the dust cover and infrared. A friend asked if I was "in production" yet. I told him, heck no, it's a kinetic sculpture, I just watch it change bits! LOL Thanks again for the great info on your channel.

Using the RapidChangeATC with dust shoe is quite difficult because the slots in the magazine are to close to each other. I asked for having each slot sold seperately so that the user can mount them in a distance that dust shoe can remain on the spindle. I am almost not using the RapidChangeATC because the dust shoe topic.

You are correct, the dust shoe compatibility is the biggest issue that I mentioned. It is possible to design an undockable dust shoe, but I have not had time to do that.

XL CNC, I think in South Africa, is helping to develop the RapidChange ATC Sidewinder, has a dust shoe loading and unloading station for his CNC.

Is that the one that did a video on one that was made out of plywood? I am thinking about something along those lines.

@@JNWoodworks Yes, it is made out of plywood.

Thanks for the great-and thorough-review. So, other than buying the unit, are there any other purchase you need?
@JNWoodworks
@JNWoodworks 4 месяца назад
You may need a few more collets and nuts so you can load it up. And then maybe a relay and wire (depending on what CNC you have) to get your spindle to run in both directions.

@@JNWoodworks thanks. I have an Avid Pro with their 4h spindle. Do you know if this setup needs a relay and wire?
@JNWoodworks
@JNWoodworks 4 месяца назад
@@Richard-yr5zjyes, that's the one I have. I added a link in the description section to my Google drive with the instructions.

Jim, I have a 1/2 collet that was very loose and caused the bit to drop out , so I used an automatic center punch and punched the collet a couple times at the grove that holds the collet in the nut and that tighten it up enough to keep the bit from dropping out.
@JNWoodworks
@JNWoodworks 4 месяца назад
I was a little worried about doing anything that creates a bump on the surface of the collet. That can cause bits to break, or the collet to not get tight enough.
