This set actually had some issues beyond the gears which caused it to run poorly. Once I figured them out though, actually fixing them was pretty easy!
Fantastic video. It helped me tune up my Turbo CN1 that I was finally able to unbox this year as had nowhere to run it until now and was originally bought when Rapido first produced it.
Good information to know and very informative video. I just purchased this same set at an estate sale, and now I know what to look for. Usually a cleaning, lube and wire conductivity are always the main issues but knowing about the tight axles and worm gear housing is very helpful and I will check that. Shame that this set has these problem considering the price it was selling for.
I am intrigued with the thought process that goes into repairing... there is an understanding, of design as intended , recognition of function , then what has failed in function, then what measures needed to restore to original design ..I find it fascinating to watch.
If you ever do need to replace the decoders, rapido sells loksound ones with improved sound files that they used on the N turbos. I may upgrade mine to the loksound ones if I can get it running well enough to warrant the expense.
I have been wanting to get the old Athearn 0-4-2T, but all their steam engines are rare enough that it can be hard to find one for a decent price. Maybe someday though!
@@DarthSantaFe Thanks so much. I've cleaned and lubed my head end unit and found gears moved freely. I'll see how end unit is shortly. Again thanks for your response.
They made some mistakes early on, and that did cause quite a few headaches on both ends with the Turbo Trains and maybe a couple others. I hear they've gotten a lot better though, so the newer models may be worth a try.
