He was 17 seventeen when he passed in a plane crash. Also on the plane was Buddy Holley and the Big Bopper. The song American pie was based on this tragedy.
Richie was only 17. Buddy Holly was tried of the drafty cold conditions on the tour bus and hired a charter plane to take his band (consisting of Waylon Jennings, Tommy Allsup, and Carl Bunch) and him to the next town. The Big Bopper had the flu, so Waylon Jennings gave him his seat. Richie had a bad cold and flipped a coin with Tommy Allsup; Richie ironically won. Thus the infamous "The Day the Music Died". Waylon Jennings (the Outlaw) went on to become a major Country singer and part of "The Outlaws": Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, and Tompall Glaser.
He died in the same plane crash as The Big Bopper and Buddy Holly which spawned the song American Pie by Don Mclean (1971) which in turn spawned the song Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack (1972), (original not the beatbox version) which describes the experience of watching Don Mclean sing American Pie. It's all connected. Thanks for another great reaction.
Richie was still a teen when he died alongside Buddy Holly (aged 22) and the big bopper (28), in the plane that came down at Clear Lake Iowa. To add to the sadness, and loss, Eddie Cochran who was a friend of Richie and Buddy, died in a car travelling between gigs near Chippenham England just a year later. He was just 21 when we lost him. Some fine old rock and rollers, and great talents lost too young. Far far too young. Quite the musical legacy they left behind for us to enjoy though. A joy to watch you dancing to the old classics. Have fun, and a great week. Be well.
Love this reaction. He was so important to music in such a short little time. First Mexican American musician to hit the USA charts, plus with Chicano flare. He was a rock pioneer that had all the cards for success stacked against him during his era. Other Mexican artist like Carlos Santana were heavily inspired him and provided hope to be successful. Valens only recorded a dozen songs or so in 18 months before he passed... that's all we have and yet his legacy is huge. Says so much about what his accomplishment meant to people since the volume of his professional work was small. Definitely check out the movie of his life with Lou Diamond Phillips portraying him off you haven't already.
Crazy that he was only 17 when he passed and he already had these bangers. Imagine this is why you can't find a live performance. This song would fit in any Oldies playlist.
Boy, oh boy, BP. This is my late husband’s- we belong together, our song. Was an in love teenager. You made my day BP. Love you for this ❤️❤️❤️👵🏼Gmaw❤️❤️❤️
Ritchie was 17 when he died in the same plane crash as the Big Bopper and one of my heroes, Buddy Holly, who chartered the flight. Ritchie was fantastic. You gotta watch the movie.
Richie Valens actually passed away at the age of 17. The song "American Pie" was all about the day he died. Him, and two other artists were headed to a show and got into a plane crash. They said that was the day the music died. So, so sad!
Not a link but if you go to classic hits studio they have a video in 4k of Ritchie live. That's what I had, I searched after this and there is a Ritchie Valens fan page. There's two videos one on the 4k and 1 of clips of him combined.
Crazy that you did this song today. I was hanging out with the writer, director, music director, and some actors in Labamba last weekend. They are my best friends in-laws. I also hung out with Bob, Richie's older brother, a handful of times before his death in 2018. One thing I don't see mentioned is that Richie's name was Valenzuela, but he was told he had to change it or he wouldn't be able to sell records or perform in some venues.
You should check out some Freddy Fender (Baldemar Garza Huerta). *Before The Next Teardrop Falls* 1974. He was later in a group called The Texas Tornadoes on the 80's
He was just a couple months shy of his 18th birthday when he was in the plane crash with Buddy Holly and Big Bopper. I’ve seen footage of him on the Ed Sullivan show performing “Come On, Let’s Go”. (Highly recommend it!) If you would like to see a biopic on him, Lou Diamond Phillips played as him in the movie “La Bamba”. (It has some rough moments, but is overall a good movie.) The day of the crash is known as “The Day the Music Died” and was referenced in Don McLean’s “American Pie”. Ironically, Valens wasn’t supposed to go on the plane but beat the roadie/ backup Waylon Jennings at a coin toss. Jennings got stuck riding on the tour bus, which had no heat and kept having things go wrong and Valens “won” the chance to ride in a plane.

As a true brit, I do Knight thee "Sir Black Pegasus" for your dedication to amazing fantastical music ie-- from La Bamba to Murderer by Ren. I Salute you Sir!!!
Richie was fire for sure..Love the movie LaBamba...😢 sad loss of him and his flying guitar 🎸 The song Come on Let's Go by Richie shows him live in parts..❤
Great show you have - Feb 3, 1959 Ritchie was 17 when he died- I was 15. Like him I am a California born, Mexican . 3:27 American . I recommend you listen to 2 GUITAR instrumentals - “!fast freight” was done in one take - “ Malagueña “ was the follow up to La Bamba - both show his ferocious masterful guitar playing , a self taught guitarist , he had an angelic tenor with several Levels as are heard on “ Little Girl”. Best of luck !!! Louisv
I was 18 in 1959 and still remember that first radio broadcast of the plane crash that took the lives of Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. All America Cried that day. Donna Ludwig ( his girlfriend ) is who Richie wrote his hit Donna for. There is a song Called the Three Stars recorded by Tommy Dee in 1959...It is a song dedicated to Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper...I still have my 45 RPM single I play now and then. You might want to take a listen..
The song American Pie is also a reference to this event. “The day the music died” was in reference to that plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, the big bopper and Ritchie Valens
Last summer I went to Clear Lake, Iowa to visit The Surf Ballroom where Ritchie, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper played their last show hours before the plane crash. So much memorabilia of theirs and other artists. Went to the crash site as well. Such a tragic loss to their families and music itself.
We lived bin San Fernando valley when he did. I was the youngest of the family and a toddler when he was popular. He was only 17 and still in highschool. My oldest sister went to schoo jr. high with Donna.
Loved this song the first time I heard it!! SO NOSTALGIC!! I would've loved to have seen what he came out with!! HEARTBREAKING!! SO TALENTED. Didn't even make it to his 20s....ugh....just SO SAD!! RIP, RITCHIE!! Thanks for reacting to him, BP!!
Checkout an awesome group of the 50's .The Platters and a great song titled " Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" . Other great songs by them : the great pretender, my prayer, twilight time, the magic touch, harbor lights, with this ring, just t o name a few.God bless you and your family. 🙏❤
He was 17 when he died in a plane crash with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. The crash is called "The day the music died" which was the basis of Don McLean's American Pie Song. If you haven't heard that song, you should give it a try!!
He was only 17 when he died in a plane crash with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. I always think about all of the music we'll never hear because he left us so early.
Tragic story, Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens perished in a plane crash. The song "American Pie" by Don McLean was about them. So, you should also check out all these artists! "True Love Ways" by Buddy and "Chantilly Lace" by The Big Bopper along with Don McLean American Pie"! You won't regret it! Love your channel! 🤠
Another song you may want to check out is a song called American pie. That's what the song is about when all three of them died in the same plane crash
In February 1959 while riding in a small plane to the next town in a concert tour The Winter Carnival,Richie Valens 17, Jules Richardson The Big Bopper 27 and Buddy Holly 23 and the pilot crashed and died soon after takeoff. A 13 year old found out about the death of his heroes the next morning while delivering papers. 12 years later now a singer/songwriter Don McLean would immortalize the event and the major music, cultural.political events that followed he named it American Pie and it immediately became one the greatest songs of all time.
Would still love to see your reaction to Appollo 57, the video of Gary Busey as Buddy Holly appearing as the first white act. Being from a suburb of Detriot I can relate to the bridges that were crossed in music being universal and colorless.
Every mexican household has seen La Bamba starring Lou Diamond Phillips a gazillion times😂 Great movie, great casting of other musicians in it. Great representation of life in america at that time for the mexican culture. My family used to go to California every pickin season for work and my father would tell me, " man, thats exactly the way the camps were" I still cry at the end everytime 😢😢
The reason it captured the culture is because the writer/director, Luis Valdez, and his brother Daniel Valdez who was the musical director and played Richie's uncle, grew up as children of migrant workers. Before making the movie they were part of the United Farmworkers Union movement with Cesar Chavez and would put on short plays to bring light to the workers struggles. A really good family that I'm lucky enough to be friends with.
February 1959..... The Day The Music Died (as Don McLean put it in American Pie). Ritchie (17 at the time) was in the plane that went down with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Is Richie's version of La Bamba what you grew up on or Los Lobos' version? You are a few years younger than me, I know both but I've known people that didn't realize Los Lobos was a cover.
Watch the movie Labamba.. it's about his life story..exactly movie. I love that error of music. Listen to "Let's go" I had the soundtrack to the movie. Lol. That is a faster one, and great also! Blessed be.❤😊
Richie 17 years old, Buddy Holly 22 years old, and The Big Bopper 28 years old, were killed in a plane crash. The incident was the main idea for Don McLean's song The Day The Music Died.Despite having his most popular hit with "La Bamba", an adaptation of a Mexican folk song with a rock rhythm and beat, Valens did not speak Spanish.Holly's band members Tommy Allsup and Waylon Jennings were supposed to ride on the plane that crashed, but according to several reports, Richardson (The Big Bopper) sick and convinced Jennings to let him take his place, and Valens won against Allsup in a coin toss for a seat on the plane.
Don Mclean recorded the song " American Pie " ( the day the music died) the tragic death of ritchie valens, buddy holly and the big bopper from a plane cradh.
Ritchie was a great talent, but he was only 17 years old The Day the Music Died (The plane crash that killed Ritchie along with the Big Bopper and Buddy Holly and their pilot). That's a big reason there is so little live video of him. Interesting fact... although he became a pioneer of Spanish-speaking rock for La Bamba, he actually did not speak Spanish and learned the song phonetically.
