He was 33. She was 18. She's not crazy. This is an anthem. She tapped into the well of rage just below the surface in every woman ever f*d over by an older more powerful man when we were young...told to shut up and be "nice". She gave us all a voice.
Did she not choose her situation? Could she not say no? Just asking. Have teenaged daughters. Where is the responsibility? They are both adults? I didn't know we got points for years over 18. I would be approaching GodTier.
@CottilionTheRope how was she a victim more than anyone that got used by someone? Guys, girls, we all get used all the time. Money, looks, what you can give them. Their age has nothing to do with it, I've seen guys and girls both get used and left dry.. myself included. You have to learn your lesson and learn the red flags and make different choices in the future
@@shadowproductions969 I don't disagree. But the comment was about this particular instance. Alanis did indeed move forward as we all well know. But she was used and abused. Simple.
True lol. After my husband was cheating and we split up, I found myself listening to Jagged Little Pill one night, signing my heart out, packing & throwing out his shit. It was like a closure ritual, it just helped me let go of those emotions. I then drove to the beach & waded in the warm waters as I watched the sun come up & drove home like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. It's strange but I legit feel grateful to Alanis for giving me that outlet.
Jagged little pill was one of the greatest albums of the 90’s. This Canadian girl wrote a masterpiece of an album. With 33 million copies of the album sold it’s one of the biggest sellers of all time. 🖖🏼
She's not crazy. She was used by an older man (Joey from Full-House). She was a teen. He was in his 30s when he "dated" and then dumped her. This song was the result. It was the anthem for us 90s GenX girls.
Facts! ❤ High school 1998, I was at her concert in NY.. it was amazing, she was AMAZING! 99.9% of musicians today suck and so does their auto tune crap..
I get the whole story but she's not a victim. She got her heart broken like everybody else at some point. It makes for great songs, but "Joey from Full House" isn't a monster who wielded power over a hapless victim. He tried it out, it wasn't what he wanted, he moved on. Guys have as much ground to just say no as any female. She's not a victim. That's the point. I'm a woman. I'm not interested in the sisterhood nonsense. I love the song. I love Alannis. Wasn't a big FH fan either way. But the drama that this caused with the "who's the secret lover" was retarded. He dumped her. Sh*t happens. He's not the villain so don't make him out to be. GenX girls are nuts anyway and still neurotic to this day......hence where "Karen" came from. And don't come at me with your pitchforks. Not gonna change a thing.
Think more Canadians need to be inserted .... Bryan Adams....Summer of '69, The Guess Who...American Woman.... Bachman Turner Overdrive.... Taking Care of Business The Stampeders...Sweet City Woman. Foreigner, Trooper, Tragically Hip, RUSH And on and on.....🇨🇦
Saw Alanis live back in the 90s when he was still drumming for her. We had crap seats in an arena stadium so we were stuck staring at Taylor's ass crack for almost the entire show. She even acknowledge it and came around to the other side the stage to give us some love.
The song is written about Dave Coulier (He was in the original tv series Full House) he was 33 and she was 18 and they dated for 2 years. He said that he listened to the whole album in his car and was stunned to hear unmistakable references to their past relationship. After listening to, 'You Oughta Know' he said that he first thought was, 'Ooh, I think I may have really hurt this woman.'
How can you have never heard this?? This was THE break up anthem of the 90’s. All these years later, you could wake me from a coma and I’d still know every word, every note. ✊🏽
I saw her live almost a decade after this came out. Started the song and somebody messed up, she stopped the song and said "it's hard when you're not angry anymore" then tore back into it. Freaking awesome.
That makes perfect sense. In this video you can hear the venom in her voice as she spits those words out but times changes us. We heal. We let it go. I’m happy she did just that ❤
I was 13 when it came out, and I sang it at the top of my lungs. Now, a preschool mom in her 40s who had her heart stomped on but now happily married, I still sing it at the top of my lungs.
Fuck yes! Alanis Morissette is a monster singer (and despite her other great albums) Jagged Little Pill is just a phenomenal album that marked a generation! Will never forget those great school times!
I hated Jagged Little Pill on the first listen and enjoyed it on the second. I bought it because of this song, like “yeah, this chick rocks,” and then there’s not a single other song on the album that’s even remotely similar. So the first time through was just disappointment, then I was able to go back and appreciate the rest as good songs, just not what I was expecting.
You hurt me, I'm angry, and I want you to know it. The song in one sentence. This is the first song that gave the impression to me that it's ok for a woman to be angry rather than just the 'I will survive' scenario. You may recognise the bassist as flea from the red hot chilli peppers
This whole album is loaded with bangers. This song featured the amazing bass played by Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Dave Navarro (Janes Addiction) on guitar.
This is from the era where musicians/artists/bands weren't afraid to be utterly vulnerable, speak plainly, honestly & bluntly....It was very cathartic for them & so relatable for a whole generation of listeners. I miss that freedom of expression, emotion & just pure honesty in music. There's some nowadays but back then it was everywhere & accepted by the mainstream. It helped untold millions get through so many difficulties in life. For example, this album sold 33 million copies worldwide, was nominated for 9 grammys, won best album of the year & is one of the best selling albums of all time....She was 21... Check out the song Uninvited. Alanis was a teen pop star from Canada & is versatile in what she can do & emote. Uninvited is probably my favorite song from her.
Jagged Little Pill came out of nowhere in 1995,probably one of the best debut rock albums of all time by any artist(artists)...song is in reference to her relationship to Uncle Joey from FULL HOUSE(Dave Coulier),she was 17 and he was 35. It has Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) on bass, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters) on drums and Dave Navarro (RHCP,Jane's Addiction) on guitar. what a line up!...
False, it has never been confirmed who the song is about. Dave has said some aspects of the song could be about him. Alanis has hinted it's about multiple exes.
Best people she could have possibly had behind her for that vibe to fully come through. She was purging angry demons, artistically and emotionally therapeutic.
@@BrandonWestfallYou’re one of the few that chooses to leave it ambiguous. They’ve both admitted that she wrote it two years after they broke up when she was still heartbroken and he had moved on.
Totally agree and I've always got on well with you good folk. Musically, The Tea Party is one of my favourite bands. Not sure what you're going to do with that PM though. Good luck with that. Cheers from downunder.
@@achebwahs1111 Hahahaha!! Cheers!!! I don't know what to do about our PM!! I voted for him, but I am more than disappointed. I watched him grow and quite respected the programs he was involved with for young people. That being said, I guess power corrupts. Have you heard of The Tragically Hip? Australia has put out some of my very favourite bands and musicians!! Anyway, Cheers, again!!
@@PJAC1 It's not just you folk with leadership dramas. We're suffering our fools too and a quick look abroad show's it's definitely trending haha. Yep the Tragically hip are awesome. We've had some cracking home growns over the years. Ren has been refreshingly timely. He goes a bit better than alright. Have a cracking day and keep that brass monkey weather away. Still scorching here and flooding on weekends, but I wish these fecking flies would bugger off already. They become part of our staple diet in summer. One a week easy where I live. always mid conversation. Hilarious when it happens to everyone else. The different ways people react and the things folk try to get em out is too funny. This summer is off its chops though. Old Klausy Schwab should jet over and put his money where the bugs go. Cheers
In my teens i was super fan of Alanis. This album was very important for the 90's because her songs helped pave a way for women to tell some truths about abuse, young women were empowered by her courage. In the video you can see the young Taylor Hawkins, Foo Fighters drummer who passed away in 2022, he was previously playing for Alanis. RIP.
Yeah as Dave tells it, they were playing at the same concerts and while other bands were on Dave and Taylor would chat back stage. Dave straight up told Alanis that he was going to steal Taylor and well... That's precisely what he did LOL!
It was Dave Coulier, who was one of the hottest actors in Hollywood at the time. She was 18 and just getting started. In any event, he was driving somewhere, listening to the radio when the song came on. He said the voice sounded familiar, and as he listened, he recognized some of the phrases... Mr Duplicity during the middle of dinner.... because that had happened. He then said it occurred to him that, 'I might have hurt that girl'. I also recommend 'Uninvited'. Funny how she scares most men..... and how most women identify to the song/sentiment.
This whole album was the sound track of my early 20s. She and other female artists if this era allowed woman of our generation to be angry and pissed off when our whole lives we were told to be quiet and respectful no matter how we were treated. Because to speak our feeling out was unlady like. This still gets blasted in the car at least once a month. It has more than stood the test of time. Chinchiila reminds me a lot of Alanis, in her willingness to put it all out there. Raw and honest and beautiful.
It's not like she's the spokeswoman for empowered females. In fact, she's the opposite. She's the kind that falls apart over a simple breakup, and ends up with multiple restraining orders against her. If this song speaks to you as if she's got some line to your inner thoughts, then you might want to consider seeking help.
@@Mr.Ekshin you should really do a bit of research before you make assumtions of how some woman must be this or that in your lame thought process. Read her bio *sshole, do the work before you mouth off, or just do us all a fav and dont say anything!
@@Mr.Ekshin Thank you for that perfect example of why Alanis and other artists who give me and so many others the power to embrace and express all our feelings, dark and light are important. Your insight into my mental health and your opinion on how I should process my own feelings based on a small paragraph in a RU-vid comment, show the depths of your empathy, self awareness, and understanding of the female experience. ❤️
I absolutely love that she said what we are actually feeling 😂 I sing it at the top of my lungs, with feeling, and I haven’t been “wronged” in decades. 😂
Jagged Little Pill is one of the very best albums from the entire decade of the 90's. You can't overstate what an important piece of work that was. I'm so glad I lived through the 90's and saw some of the very best musical talent in history.
Uninvited is her best song it’s sooo haunting it’s about a stalker. U could react to her live performance at the Grammys or just the lyrics don’t matter it’s fire
This uninvited live performance will change any doubts u have about her amazing talent! She also did an acoustic version of you oughta know later on Howard Stern show that’s beautiful! Check them out BP!!!! ❤✌️
She wrote this for Dave Coulier (Joey from the show Full House) when he dumped her. She nailed the Lifetime Movie-level crazy woman vibe the way she jumps around with her thoughts throughout the song.
You'll be happy to find out that "No Scrubs" from TLC is also about Dave Coulier (as confirmed by Chilli in an interview in 2020). And while this song is totally crazy-woman vibes (as is Your House... the untitled track off the end of the CD... which is next-level crazy-pants), the fact that Coulier inspired two #1 singles with antics tells me it might not be totally her fault.
I have the CD and still play it in its entirety at least once a month. When the album was released in 1995, I was 37 yrs old and, as a fellow Canadian up here in Toronto, I am VERY proud of our Alanis Morissette.
She sings the anthems of a LOT of women out there. She put into words what is going through someone's mind who has EVER been dumped unceremoniously out of nowhere.
Alanis is from Canada and she was first a tv star on the show You Cant Do That On Television before she went into music. She once told Madonna to go screw herself when Madonna offered to 'connect her to the right people' so that she could earn as much money as possible if she only had a makeover and get more sexy. She also wrote a song about Kevin Smith called In The Front Row that is about how they almost got together during the filming of Dogma, where she plays God.
@@user-cf1ul6nm2d Yeah, there's a clip somewhere where Kevin talks about it during one of those q and a shows he used to do. And the tv show she was on was a variety show for kids; she was about 12 or so when she was on it.
I turn 40 in July and my nickname in high school was Alanis because I constantly sang the songs off Jagged Little Pill ❤ took me a few years to fully understand but I can’t believe this album slipped you by. You come home and your girl is listening to this you need to head out and buy some flowers 😂
I got to see Alanis on the 25th anniversary tour for this album, she sang the whole thing front to back. It was one of the most euphoric experiences of my life. Just imagine thousands of women screaming this chorus together. Amazing.
It’s always interesting to hear music from the 90’s now and realize how much raw anger was tapped into and how much iconic artistry came out. Alanis was a movement. Jagged Little Pill was a masterpiece.
Each decade had its aura. The 90s were about truth and honesty and really finding power in a story. The thing with this song is it is probably the most powerful voice of a woman and her feelings since Janis Joplin.
She has such an amazing voice that when I saw her Jagged Little Pill concert, her voice carried to the upper balconies crystal clear and reverberated off the walls. No speakers were necessary.
Alanis dealt with some pretty traumatic stuff in her younger years and she had to work through some pretty bitter feelings. It seems that she has steadily found peace and healing through the years. I'll echo some others to check out a live version of uninvited. Her voice will give you chills like no other.
She is intense and extremely talented. She gave voice to the things women were told to hide a generation ago. This was a great, breakthrough song. Thanks for “getting it” and sharing.
Alanis Morissette is Canadian 🇨🇦 She does have that lilt in her voice like a number of celtic singers have. My favourite song by her is Uninvited. Very haunting.
It’s hard to reconcile the fact that Alanis was a teenage bubblegum pop singer in Canada back in the day. Her music is so much more interesting now. She’s straight fire!! 🔥
she actually wrote this for one of the guys from the show Full House. The blond uncle. and he says he had no idea she was so pissed off. and he says she was really nice to him after they broke up.
alanis is canadian. as a canadian i watched her grow up on the tv show "you can't do that on television" and then go on to have two dance pop albums. the single before this one was in the summer of 1992 and was called "no apologies", from her second album _now is the time_ . next i saw of her was this video. she shablammed us all.
It’s so hard to think this is around 30 years old. I played the fool out of this cd. This album/cd started a whole side genre in rock, angry chick took in the 90’s. Her drummer is legend. Taylor Hawkins. He left playing for her & joined FooFighters. Sadly, he passed a just a couple years ago. He left a big hole in the band and with family + friends. Others will fill you in on the candidates for whom this song was about. Thank you for what you do, I always appreciate you authentic views.
Jagged Little pill with the first CD I ever bought. I was in middle school and i still have it about 15ish yrs later...lol I didn't know when I bought it that it would help me get through a lot of 💩 in the years to come. I actually didn't even know who she was until somebody told me that I kind of looked like her. I listened to it so much that i also mimicked her voice singing it. I absolutely love this woman. She gave me strength and confidence when i needed it. I used to have dreams about meeting her to thank her.
Alanis is Canadian and fun fact, she went to my high school with my older sister and she recorded a singing of the National Anthem which they would play 2-3 per week every morning, even when I went to the same high school year later. She had quite a run for about 5-7 years in the 1990s when she was one of the biggest stars in the world. Fun fact about this song, Dave Navarro (guitar) and Flea (bassist) from the Red Hot Chili Peppers were also on this track.
OMG! This made my day, my week! I literally grew up only listening to hiphop, and in my group of friends if you said you listened to rock (or other) you'd be laughed at and ridiculed, so I never really knew any other music. Then when I was 16-17 we moved to Europe and it was just around the time Alanis came out big on MTV, and I somehow ended up with her album Jagged Little Pill..... and I loved it! I played it over and over. It was the first time in my life I didn't listen to hiphop and my mind opened up to listening to other music. I can thank Alanis for opening my mind to other music actually. As a teen we loved this angry empowered "boss girl" music, haha.... it was the Anthem for girls growing up in the 90s, and especially after a break up, along with the lesser known "Nobody's Wife" by Anouk. That's why there's a whole generation of us who were in totally dysfunctional relationships, haha. We thought that it was what relationships were supposed to be like. It's funny because in those days listening to angry songs like this was normal stuff, and now in hindsight, and the way the world is today, I'm like: "wtf, this is some seriously disturbing stuff" haha. That being said, one of the greatest albums of all time imo.
She is actually a very nice nice calm person and she says once she made this about her breakup she put it away . She is great in concert 😊Saw her during one of my remissions and she is soooooooo good
She's my age and I loved listening to all her songs and CD's. I always thought she was beautiful too! I always crushed on her lol. Thanks for watching this one, we are proud to have her as a Canadian!❤
I love this song and the video for it. Since you've recently started getting into Foo Fighters, the drummer for Alanis during her tour for this album (and you can see him in the video) was Taylor Hawkins who went on to be the drummer for Foo Fighters. At the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert after he passed away, she came and sang this song with the Foo Fighters in memory of him. He really liked Alanis, and made a really beautiful from the heart speech for her when he presented her with the Icon Award for Women in Music.
one of my favorite singers please do more of her music she from Ottawa Canada she has so many great songs please do thank U next then one hand in my pocket. head over feet . you learn . not the doctor
I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan by any stretch, but she has one of the best true voices (not altered or pitch corrected) in the world today. She can sit with someone playing acoustic and will blow you away.
I remember driving & this song would come on the radio. I'd crank up the volume & sing right along. Jagged Little Pill is 1 of my favorite albums. ML&R
