The colour me part is because it's taken from the film American Gigolo. Debbie saw it before it was released to get some inspiration. The film uses subtle colours hence the lyric. The call me line is because the film is about a male escort who says "call me" throughout the film.
This one time the band wasn't really involved in the release version...most of what they did, besides Debbie's vocal was replaced by Moroder's session players.
This is the first song to hit number 1 without being on a bands album . It was on the American Gigolo soundtrack. Check out her reggae hit The tide is High. Also check out The hardest Part. This is the one that put her on the map
As someone who grew up before cellphones it was only hard to get ahold of someone on a phone when they were on the phone already because there was no call-waiting in the late 70’s early 80’s.
In British English, the phrase "colour me....." simply means to call me something. For example, "I didn't know the state capital of Vermond. Colour me stupid", or "I have to leave now. Colour me gone."
Before Richard Gere was an officer, he was a gigolo in "The American Gigolo" (1980). "Call Me" does not appear on any studio album. You either need a greatest hits, the soundtrack or a live version.
I think you will love Sunday Girl. Also Tide is High, Atomic, Maria, One Or Another, Hanging On the Telephone ( super short, but awesome). And more that I’m forgetting right now.
The first rap I ever heard was in a men's room in Detroit at a Tubes concert. This guy was freestyling and the bathroom was jammed. The guy was so good and made perfect sense like Harry Mack. You could hear people all over asking friends if they heard the guy in the men's room. This was in 1974 at the Masonic Temple. Blondie was from the heroin chic era when fashion models looked like strung out junkies.
To think we almost never had a band named Blondie. When Debbie Harry was a server in NY. Late one night after work, she accepted a ride from a stranger. Once in she realized how much danger she was in. She barely escaped. The stranger was none other than Ted Bundy.
The word “color” has Latin roots that meant “covering, concealment.” Figuratively, people began to use the word color to express appearance, authority, or other intangible aspects of society. It is also used to make something interesting. so color me might mean hide me

The movie , "American Gigolo " with the great Richard Gere intro song. She was talking about the gigolo guy that Richard Gere plays in the movie to color, cover , give her everything , if you know what I mean ?
Fun fact!! Blondie aka Debbie Harry is my god mother!! Her parents played cards Bridge with her parents when I was a little girl!! I haven't seen her since I was 8 yrs ...I lived in mountain lakes her parent's lived in lake Arrowhead in NJ
Blondie is the class act of Punk Rock, that was a crazy time of mosh pits and with real punk a lot of anger and mostly poorly performed, not so talented groups, imho. Blondie was the exception to the rule! Thanks B.P.👍💕
You should really look into Debbie's story a bit. It's quite the story and she's a true path maker for women in music. I'd be here for any reaction to her. Here or in VS the world watching her story. ❤😊
What you really need to do is watch the first opening to the film American gigolo which the song is from with Richard Gere driving down the freeway in LA and a black Mercedes convertible you get an idea how much the song fits the movie if you watch that
Great Song and Band. I grew up in the 70’s early 80’s and she was very Popular back then. Awesome Track. Check out Pat Benatar. Love is a Battlefield. Thanks Brother
This song was in the movie "American Gigolo" about a male prostitute. When Blondie is singing about"color" it was from the many colors that affected her from watching the beginning of"American Gigolo ". I think there's a part where someone is driving down the Cali coastline & so pretty colorful. However, this video is featuring Blondie as the prostitute, hence, her saying "call me. Call me anytime...day or night...cover me with kisses baby..cover me with love....roll me in designer sheets" etc...all things you'd probably hear from a working lady of the night. Lol
Blondie is punk check out her first time on British TV, vids knackered though. Songs called Rip her to shreds. Thanks to Anthony Wilson ( Mr Manchester) i went to see them, got my ticket the day after
Ok but you really owe it to yourself in order to really comprehend the meaning of this song you must do the full version from the movie soundtrack American Gigolo!
AWWWWW MANNN, WELL THAT WAS SURELY CUT! 😮☹BANGERRRR FOR SURE ROBERT! 💯 SO THEY WERE REALLY CATEGORIZED AS ( NEW WAVE ) JUST LIKE THE ( PRETENDERS ) BUT THE BAND THAT WAS REALLYYYY AT THE FRONT OF THAT STYLE WERE ( THE CARS ) 👍 BUT YEAH ROBERT YOU MISSED THE WHOLE SYNTH AND ON IN THE SONG AS YOU CAN TELL, IT JUST FADED OUT!
Yeah, much shortest version like 2-min. The common ones are the 3 1/2 min and 8-min version with instrumentals in..... Even juke boxes in bars offer the long version for your money's worth.
