He and Annie had a mad fight over his womanizing and heavy partying. He wrote this to get back on her good side, didn't really work. Very good film/biography on him.
@@frankk8018 If you're talking about the movie staring Chad Lowe, take it with a grain of salt. That film was completely inaccurate. They didn't even come close to getting the timeline of events right and his family was apparently quite pissed off about the film. It did not portray him as he really was.
My husband of 37 years died in December. I held him in my arms as he took his last breath. I was by his side since his 20th birthday. This song melted me. It’s true. He filled up my senses and he is still loving me. I know I’m loving him.
True Story - in 2005 - two women were getting on an elevator in NYC. The elevator was playing a song - and the younger woman said to the older woman - "This is a really lovely song - do you know the name of it?" The older woman replied - "Yes - It's called Annie's Song. John Denver wrote it for me when we were married back in the early 70's."
@@katsterling8266 John was a huge star. Traveling around the world performing concerts for millions, as well as for environmental efforts, a TV show, a couple of movies. Like most in this type of life, he cheated. A lot. Although I do think he loved Annie deeply.
John was famous for his environmental activism. One of his loveliest songs is called "Calypso" written about the famed underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau and his ship Calypso.
He has the clearest projection of his voice. He was a supreme songwriter and musician. It’s too bad he passed the way he did. He is so missed 😢❤RIP John Denver.
You are likely tired of hearing it, but once again, another artist from our generation with no autotune, not lip synching, just playing his guitar and singing with a band backing him up, live. Remembering people like this is why music today does so little for most of our generation--the difference between something cooked from scratch vs a vending machine product.
I was listening to another guy that says most all music is now autotuned. So sad. I think it's wings of pegasus that does the comparisons. He did Willie Nelson and the Highwaymen the other day. Autotuned. Sigh.
@@lisdk1732 Wings of Pegasus may single handedly kill autotune. His comparisons are fantastic. And introducing people to the classic artists, like these reactions do - it shouldn't be much longer before kids want to hear real voices again. Both my teenage nephews are into vinyl record albums and love the old artists. There is hope!
Don’t try to over think John Denver and his beautiful delicate vocals. His passion for nature and home resonate with every song. It is simply John Denver full stop.
"Rocky Mountain High" and "Sunshine On My Shoulders" are wonderful songs. They pull on the heartstrings. Also, cannot forget "Leaving On a Jetplane". John Denver was such an amazing singer. Much missed....❤
Saw John Denver in the 80"s, and when the intermission came in the concert..the band left the stage, and John stayed with his guitar...He sang songs through the break, and then was there when the band came back..finished the 2nd half of the concert. He spoke and sang during that break time...and it was WONDERFUL!
Chris Isaak...same, in Austin late 90's. Bryan Ferry, same, same. Lindsay Buckingham, first FM tour back together, San Antonio Alamodome.... Never stopped playing his guitar and singing.
Similar experience with his concert except he didn't bother with the guitar. He sang a capella. Despite no flashes, no great light shoe, it was the best concert I have ever been to
This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. My Dad loved listening to John Denver so I grew up hearing him constantly in our house. He didn't just have one style - listen to Grandma's Feather Bed for something completely different. John Denver was way ahead of his time. As early as the 1970s he was one of the biggest stars to voice concerns about climate changes, the environment and what we are doing to the planet. RIP JD
Yes. And for me it’s, oddly, as emotional as Annie’s Song. I was number 17 of 19 grandchildren. In the 70’s and early 80’s we spend so much time at grandma’s house with the cousins, and we even sang this song a lot. But, obviously, my grandparents were older by the time I came along so I didn’t have them as long. This song always makes me smile.
The song was about his wife. He was a folk singer! Neither country, rock, or pop would claim him. He didn't need them, he had the fans!!! At 70, I saw him live numerous times and owned all his albums!
This was my wedding song, it’s so beautiful. Unfortunately I lost my husband to brain cancer last Christmas after 28 years. You’ve managed to have me bawling my eyes out but I still loved it Thankyou
We lost John Denver WAY too soon. What a gift he had. We will never know the extraordinary things he might have done had he been permitted to live to be an old man. It's great to watch you discover this amazing talent. Thank you for reacting to him.
That is how a man woos a woman. John was a environmentalist a great lyricist musician and performer, he had been playing on the road for 2 decades by this show
Since you are now the proud father of two baby girls, I think you should definitely react to Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance". It is just perfect for a girl dad.
and on "Calypso", I recommend the video to see the ship which this song is about and the crew- This is the one ( Calypso John Denver Jacques Cousteau )
This song always gives me goosebumps like I'm having right now. One of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung. Songs like this will always be around.
The song Calypso was written in honor of Jacque Cousteau’s oceanic research ship. It’s a beautiful song. Jacque Cousteau was a oceanic researcher and is know for traveling the world studying the wild life of the world’s oceans. Jacque, along with a partner, developed the first open self contained under water breathing apprentice also known was the SCUBA.
I think back in the 60s-70s when he was coming up it was the "Folk Music" scene... he was in the "Chad Mitchell Trio" for awhile...essentially an Vietnam protest group...then went solo and then obviously was a MEGA super star...
Yes, Annie was his wife and he wrote it for her following an argument. After his death, Annie was asked in an interview what her favorite John Denver song was. She said that most people would assume it was Annie's Song, but she said her real favorite was "Perhaps Love." He recorded it as a duet with tenor Placido Domingo. If you really want your heart gently ripped from your chest, you should hear him sing his song "Seasons of the Heart," about their relationship falling apart.
I was in college when this hit and one of the girls that lived on my hall fought the line was "You fill up my senses like a night in the toilet!" She could not figure out why John Denver wood write such a lyric or why we thought that was such a romantic song! Poor child!
John Denver was actually a pilot and died testing out his brand new plane 😥. This song is about his wife and I must admit it’s not my nature to go for something this sweet but, like you, it grabs me. I’m 70 so I grew up with this along with Beatles, etc. He’s just an amazing artist gone too soon. 🌺✌️
Like you, BP, i lost my mother to cancer. I was 16 years old. As you know, it was devastating. Im 47 now, & it still affects me. I got married when i was 26 and this was our wedding song. Imagine how bitter sweet it was just a couple years ago when i was going thru my mom's record's and discovered "Annie's song" on 45 among the collection. It was like her way of letting me know she's always been there, even thou she's not. 😢😭🥲 Thank you BP. Sometimes we don't realize when we need a good cry. Sending love, always ❤
John Denver songs you may like: "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", "Take Me Home Country Roads", "Calypso" and "Leaving On a Jet Plane". He plays the fiddle in Thank God I'm a Country Boy.
I might add another suggestion... later in his career, shortly before he died... more mature, more reflective... maybe a bit more melancholy... 'Some Days are Diamonds, Some Days are Stones"
Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm really shocked at the music you've never heard!! My head is exploding! John Denver, one of the greatest folk singers ever! If you go down this rabbit hole, fair warning.... you will love his voice forever. I used to put my children to sleep to his greatest hits. Sunshine On My Shoulders worked so well t that my baby fell asleep getting a cast off her leg at a year old. She passed away at 1 year and 17 days. 37 years later it still brings tears, but it's such great song.
Oh I am so very sorry for the loss of your precious little daughter. No words can express the sadness felt in such an event, but you are in my prayers. God bless you always.
I love John. He was a military kid too. He was born in Roswell when his father was stationed there. Sunshine on my shoulder is another song with the same type of pace. Looking for something fun from him? Try Grandma's Featherbed. I'm glad you like him.
This is pure poetic folk music sung by one of the greatest, purest vocal artists ever. IMHO. John had incredible talents as a lyricist and 12 string guitar player.
If a person ever writes lyrics like this for you, you know it is the "real thing". There are very few love songs that are as vulnerable and as sincere as this.
He was technically a folk singer, but was mostly celebrated as a country artist. He probably had the purest voice of his generation. It was a great loss when he crashed his plane. He was also an accomplished pilot. "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" is probably my favorite of his. "Leaving on a Jet Plane" is also a wonderful song, but makes me sad because of how he left us. Great reaction BP, keep it up.
Technically he's right, he was an accomplished pilot. The plane he crashed in was an experimental model that had design flaw. There's a channel on YT that talks about well known failed flights and what caused them. They covered the issue with the plane that failed John Denver. Well worth a watch.
John was a likable guy. He was on TV alot in the 70's and even if you disliked Folk music, you liked him. He crossed over to acting and had a hit movie or two.
I've loved John Denver since the early 70s. I was devastated when he died. He was perfection. It still hurts my heart and soul that he left us so young.
Take Me Home Country Road is played in stadiums in the NFL and other sporting events. Everybody in the stadium sings along and bond together. Gives me chills every time.. So awesome!! ❤❤❤❤
Had a similar experience at the Cellar Door in Washington D.C. He was still pretty new so had a light audience. He invited us to stay for the second set. What an experience!
Yes!!! I knew u would love this! It's one of my favorite songs by him! If u end up checking out more, listen to This Old Guitar! He tells a little story before he performs! And yes, this song was written for his first wife, Annie! There's actually a biopic about his life if u want to learn more about him! The movie is called "Take me home : The John Denver Story! Definitely worth a watch!
Must continue with Denver. So many incredible songs. His voice is pure gold. Rocky Mountain High, Leaving on a Jet Plane, Country Roads, Calypso, Sunshine on My Shoulders, My Sweet Lady, etc etc Annie was his wife. ❤️❤️❤️
This song John wrote for his wife well on a ski trip after a big fight with his wife and when he came back from the trip he had the song of apology for her And it became one of his number one hit songs.
I was in Boston for my 30th birthday in 1997 and ended up at a bar called the Black Rose. They had a live band and John Denver was there. He got on stage and sang a few songs.
At 69 now I still believe the 70s had the best music of every kind. Still would like a reaction to Lady Sings The Blues by Billie Holiday! Great song and great movie!
Annie was his wife. This hits 🎯 in the feels. YOU adore your wife and babies, this is about deep, ETRNAL LOVE.😊 He is a "Bard," a storyteller, an entertainment with a message. It is "Folk Music 🎶" and it is a ballad. "Homegrown Tomatoes 🍅!" Great song. "Grandma's Feather Bed." He was an activist for the environment, animals, and sea life. "CALYPSO," is about his friendship with Jaques Cousteau, Oceanographer, conservationist. And One of my faves, "HIGHER GROUND!" You will love it.
Loved John Denver, RIP 🙏. He died too young. This is one of my favorites that he did... Thank you for playing it. He sang and did the song for his wife Annie
It's not country. John was his own genre, a mix of folk, bluegrass, country, pop, and his own personal touch of magic. Annie was his wife. It was benefit for wildlife, he was a conservationist and did a lot to protect the natural world.
Got to see John three times in concert. He was perfect, always. Annie was his wife. He died so very young, and in one of those ways possibly preventable.
There is something about the chime and tone of a twelve string guitar that I absolutely love!! So much so that I own 4 of them! But if I ever get a chance at one of those beautiful Guild 12's like John Denver's, I will be all over it! Funny how so many overlook it or just don't realize what they are hearing. As far as other songs, check out Poems, Prayers and Promises.
If you want to be blown away by John Denver's voice and if it hasn't been suggested: "Calypso." The message is very powerful, too. His real name was Henry John Dutchendorf, Jr.
John wrote this so after he and his wife had just had a terrible argument. He went outside and regretted the whole thing. He sat down and poured his heart out trying to describe to Annie how he really felt about her. He’s literally sharing his soul to her … and us!
