No there Not the greatest ever. Too young to make that claim.’ Stop trolling with the rabbit-hole mental. Shits.🖕🏿.just one of many Great Bands! Soia ia kouke faáfiakauli.’ 🤪
All music is, subjective. But I suppose Tool could be considered art rock as they include deeper artistic expression and more unconventional influences.@@dirkguijt2810
@@dirkguijt2810 I fucking love Tool it's one of my fav bands ever, and they have played some of the best live shows I've ever seen in my life. They are not for everyone. Other music is absolutely art, including pop, and everything else. Just because it is ubiquitous does not mean it is bad. When I was younger, I thought pop was trash music, now I can appreciate it when my wife is having the time of her life to it lol, even though I prefer things like Jazz, Rap, Classical, Funk, Rock, and Metal. I think Tool is mind blowing, she can hear that it is very intricate and complex, but she just doesn't like it. Totally fair.
I compete in stereo shows and design home theater rooms, and Tool is what I use to set gains as my reference sound. Their recordings are that spatially accurate and so highly dynamic in clarity💯🔥🔥
It's crazy how they manage to make "four" sound like it isn't... As this piece is one of their few basically in 4/4, except for a couple of long breaks that are in "three". But yeah: they utilize all time signatures, and every other rhythmic trick in the book, and some that aren't in the book. Peace and love.
@@primateinterfacetechnologi6220They really do a great job with this song in making you feel it's not in 4/4. Part of that is the few bars of 3/4 and the rest is their dancing around the 4. Meshuggah is a bit like that. They almost always have a 4/4 on the high hat and the rest is doing an extra beat here a polyrhythm there, a half measure etc.
@@laurabuer4714 lucky you, I can't spare the $369+ fees a ticket here! D'oh! Glad I saw them years ago with Maynard in alien makeup and hiding. Some people were mad. I'm like "it's Tool" if you expect them to do what you want and play rock star for you, you kind of don't get it!
Tool Army! I think your analysis was pretty on point. Hypocrisy in the government against drug use, mostly pot. My favorite line..."Weeping shades of cozened indigo....got lemon juice up in your eye" Crying fake tears, crocodile tears. They stand on their soapbox shouting about wrong things everyone is doing when they do it themselves. Perfect poetry.
Please do more TOOL you won’t be disappointed. This band is intelligent and masters at their individual instruments. Together they create an experienced unmatched to any other. Welcome to TOOL if you keep reacting the TOOL army will surely follow. Spiral Out!
Your comment about not being able to find the time is spot on. Tool is a group of exceptional musicians. Their drummer, widely considered one of if not the best in the world. To challenge themselves and make composing fun, they do crazy time signatures, changes, drops, and just about every other cool musical trick in the book. They're so tight, that when they come back on the 1, it's scary how in sync they are.
... And, ironically this piece is one of the few of theirs that is, except for a couple sections in 3/4ish, basically in 4/4... though they manage to make it sound like it isn't... Got to love that. Peace be upon you.
You got it. They play in freaky time sigs that I don't even think they count, I think they just learned it by playing and writing together for a long time. How Maynard makes melodies out of it is what's so remarkable, even if his voice weren't so amazing, he makes these math tempos accessible. It's pure art. Sometimes I think they are an evolution of the band Yes with a little Rush thrown in. But they are just Tool. They exist in their own orbit.
@@rimskykorsakov2892 yeah its a secret formula they broke into Geddy's lab one night and stole it. It all makes sense now. but by your theory they'd sound like Rush and Tool sounds absolutely nothing like Rush. So there goes your stole theory. Next.
I dunno Carey has a degree in music from KU. Pretty sure everything they do is planned and they totally know what they are doing and why they are doing it. Peart from Rush was one of Carey’s idols. Lots of progressive elements but with a groove all their own.
The second you knew the saying, "the pot calling the kettle black" and your personal connection to it I had to subscribe! You should definitely check out more Tool, the tracks Parabol and Parabola played together are truly spiritual, but any of their tracks are worth a listen for sure!
I personally think it is about capital punishment and how the people sentencing people to death are as guilty of murder as the murderer is. But that's just me.
you nailed it with the "stutter step". Depending on the song, with Tool, sometimes in the chorus and/or sometimes in the verses, you may need an extra "step" every 2 bars. you also nailed it regarding DMT and their album cover art. Their last 3 album covers are by artist Alex Grey.
Makes it fun to move at shows, especially with extendeds. Got to see the live debut of descending and invincible. The downbeat got lost on me a few times!
Great comparison about Tool and DMT. Saw them last night in Austin, 17th row, front and center (mind-blowing). It was like a non-chemically induced, 3-D version, of a DMT trip. It was like a healing sound bath that united hippies, headbangers, young and old. Simply amazing, inspiring (and I've seen them 5 or 6 times since 1996).
Drums and the rest of the band are on different time signatures, which occasionally come together at certain moments. That’s why you fight with yourself trying to catch the beat. They use polyrhythms and such in most of their deeper tracks, and even on their hits. My two favorites are “H.” and “Aenima”.
Seeing Tool on Monday at Ball Arena!! Best show ever!!!❤❤❤ They have the craziest tempos ever!! Maynard is amazing!! Colorado has a huge “Tool” fan base!! Please keep riding the spiral🔧
It was amazing as always!! Even better than last year. They NEVER let me down. I even ran into Danny Carey before the show sneaking in the back stage entrance!!! Big boy!!❤️
My favorite bands, Tool and Pink Floyd. I love both for the same reasons: great musicianship, attention to detail, thought provoking lyrics, and mastering of sonic soundscapes that create atmosphere.
Tool is well known for changing their time signatures. So if you're finding it difficult to tap your toes to it, it's because the time signatures are constantly changing to throw you off and change the mood and tempo. Tool is one of my favorite bands live.
Fun fact: Maynard(lead singer) is also in 2 other bands, "A Perfect Circle" and "Puscifer". Next may I suggest, the song "Pnuema" first the studio version, and then the Danny Carey(drummer) drum cam version! Absolute fire my man!
Their album art is done by the artist Alex Grey, who is definitely a wizard of translating psychedelic experiences into visual art. Tool concepts are a blend of psychology and spirituality. Check out their song Lateralus They incorporate the Fibonacci sequence (a mathematical formula in which each number is the sum of the two preceding ones 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21, into infinity found in all nature.. pine cone, sea shells, flowers, broccoli, etc.) into the syllables of lyrics and time signatures of the song. The concept expands on our own nature of growth thru life and being willing to transcend and evolve. It relates to the nature of the Fibonacci sequence. This song is a mind bending way of educating us thru a masterpiece of art. Psychological Bars await 🔥🔥🔥
I'm glad someone suggested this band to you. If you like this song, I think you're really going to love Tool. It only gets better from here..and it never stops! I'm here for it. Spiral out! Tool army is here❤
Tool plays in unconventional time signatures. Pneuma is a great song to see that in. They don’t use conventional 4x4/4x2 patterns. It’s very difficult to play in and requires so much creativity and precision to get it all to flow. Truly unique
Polyrhythms ( many rhythms ) Danny can play a different rhythm or “time signature “ with each hand and foot, so four at once. It’s rumored he could do five if he wasn’t wearing his pants 😂. He is known as the octopus for obvious reasons. Nice reaction 👍
Raw! Blistering! Fricking EPIC! Mathematical geniuses! Get angry go ahead this is HARDCORE! You’re not tapping you’ll be headbanging, my friend! Get your ass into that MoshPit! 🔥🔥🔥🎸🎤🔥🔥🎶
Lol the look on your face toward around 12:20 is exactly how I feel listening to Tool most times. It's the expression of oh man, this really is making me think. Tool is just one of those bands who will get your gears turning.
One of my fav Tool songs. He breaks down the hypocrisy of politicians and courts using pot to blame for all social problems when we should be looking at them and ourselves.
Welcome to the Tool party. Maynard James Keenan of Tool (Puscifer & A Perfect Circle) is a lyrical genius. Yes, he fronts 3 bands.... at once. Writes and sings for all 3. AND, runs his winery in Jerome AZ. Lateralus, Jambi, Descending, 7empest... the Tool list is long! Start off with "Pneuma, Danny cam live". The level of drumming you'll witness will leave you in awe. End of The Pot actually has it right there.... Danny Carey in the Boston jersey.
and, new sub'r here brother. Every time I see someone react and hear a Tool song for their 1st time I love it. Wait until the Tool Army catches ya, your views and comments should explode.
I'm really excited for you to go on this journey. The fact that you and all your friends seem to work in production of music in one way or another I think that you will all truly appreciate the production level of the mastering of this music.
Been following for a year. Discovered you & REN @ the same time. I've thoroughly enjoyed the ride, but you know what? Can you hear that? That's the incoming stampede of the TOOL Army. Your subs are about to go through the roof. 🤘🤘🤘
Tool use polyrhythms in such a specific and smart way. You get this almost uncomfortable feeling as it begins to feel things are falling apart, yet there is enough of a groove to keep you engaged, and then the various time signature reunite in a glorious drop that lands harder than any you’ve ever heard, because of the friction building in that uncountable comfort. in many aspects of their guitar is very simple, but done in such a unique artistic way, it’s like another voice in the track. It’s just great music.
BP, I'd love to see you react to Tool's songs "Wings For Marie" and "10,000 Days (Wings part 2)." They should be done together (Like Ren's Jenny and Screech). Maynard wrote these songs about the death of his mother after a long battle, and I think they would really resonate with you. If you do them, please find lyric videos or have the lyrics pulled up. Maynard's mother was paralyzed for many years. She always maintained strong faith throughout her life, even though her congregation was very cruel to her and implied that it was punishment for something she did wrong. Maynard was very angry about it as a younger man, but this is a more mature Maynard. It's a beautiful piece, and I think you would really love it.
@15:50 I missed it for years, too... I always thought it was "Pissed all over my black halo..." One day it just hit me when I heard the lyric correctly... 'Pot calling the kettle black..." The Pot... "pissed all over my black kettle"... yeah. That's OK though... no matter how many times I listen to anything they do, something new pops out. Enjoy the ride!
The mixed meters do make it tough for 4/4 6/8 head bobbers. That is a reason most tool fans are musicians themselves. Musicians appreciate how difficult it is to groove in these atypical time signatures.
Watched Tool last night in Austin, Moody Center. This was the second song on the setlist. So much better live if you can believe it. Spiral out, my guy.
You got the meaning correct. It’s about hypocrisy and the war on drugs. The lawmakers who put these laws in place to criminalize those that use drugs, but in turn do it themselves. It’s definitely “The Pot” and the “The Pot calling the kettle black.” The singer, Maynard, uses some very different ways of breaking up syllables and it feels more like hip hop in that respect. He uses his voice more as one of the instruments in the band and not as the frontman who is trying to stand out above the rest of the band. Everything from his inflection, to the notes he chooses for each word help paint the picture. Definitely venture down the Tool rabbit hole. You won’t be disappointed. Also, the genre is “Progressive Metal”.
Most of the art that people associate with Tool is Alex Gray's art. Adam though did special effects for the movie industry. Jurassic Park and some other things iirc. The Art in alot of their music videos is his. Claymation type stuff very cool in its own way.
@@6ic6ic6ic Alex has talked a lot about how DMT and LSD inpired hit artwork and spoke about it in DMT the spirit molecule book. His artwork is spot on for that experience its pretty wildly accurate
Here we go again!! Welcome to one of the greatest bands of all time. Tool, made up of Vocalist Maynard James Keenan, Guitarist Adam Jones, Bassist Justin Chancellor, and the Octopus on Drums Mr. Danny Carry. In general Tool can be divided between their early years which had a more aggressive, angry tone and their later years which is more spiritual and reflective. Each member are elite musicians, Tool only sounds like Tool and are a genre all their own. Maynard writes all the lyrics, and his performances are on par with some of the greatest vocalists in history. He is also a vocalist for A Perfect Circle and Puscifer both of which I highly recommended to dive into. Tool fans will tell you to stay away from reacting to any of their official videos as they distract quite a bit from the songs and lyrics, I typically recommend to just listen to their music first and then on a second go around pull up the lyrics, we promise, it'll add dimension and depth to the entire experience. Tool fans are devoted and love to watch reactions of people’s first time listening, to say they are unique doesn’t do them justice. Take your time with reactions, we don’t mind if you pause and analyze, a lot of their music is open to interpretation which is fun for all of us. Spiral out and have fun on your journey...oh and YES headphones are a must! The Staples The Pot 46 and 2 Lateralus The Grudge Sober Schism Pneuma 7empest Right in Two Vicarious The Patient Deeper Cuts Jambi Hooker with a Penis Pushit Pushit (Salival Version) Eulogy Disposition / Reflection / Triad (All in a row) Invincible Culling Voices Decending Swamp Song 4 Degrees Parabol/Parabola Ticks & Leaches No Quarter Maynard’s Dick Songs related to Maynard's mother. Judith Marie Keenan, a devote Baptist, suffered a paralyzing cerebral hemorrhage when Maynard was just 11-years-old. Judith would remain paralyzed for 27 years (approx. 10,000 days) until her death in 2003. Jimmy Judith (A Perfect Circle) Wings for Marie (Part 1) 10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)
How can you say they are a genre all of their own when Dream theater have come before and then the godfathers of odd time signatures Rush where the originals. Get a grip
@@rimskykorsakov2892 I'm not just talking about odd time signatures that's been done in classical music for hundreds of years...if you remember back to when tool came out people tried to lump them in with the grunge wave...that didn't fit, people tried to label them heavy metal...nope again. Hard rock? Ha! And as they've progressed they are a blend of multiple styles thus creating a genre all by themselves. Just listen to the vast majority of RU-vid reactors listening to Tool for the first time, they've never heard anything like them...they are unique and in a genre all their own.
