I was singing this new song from this new band in the 80s trying to be cool and Mom laughed at me telling me they were so old they had changed their name twice already. It was Jefferson Airplane, then Jefferson Starship and then just Starship.

There are a couple of reasons. First, it was a huge departure from the look and style of the band that played at Woodstock. In particular, moving to synth pop felt like the band sold out, trying to keep up with what the new generation was doing rather than having the self confidence to stay true to themselves. My own opinion is that bands evolve over time, or they become stale and irrelevant. Second, that radio DJ insert in the middle. -eyes rolling-. One list I saw of the worst songs of all time put this at number two and that ridiculous insert was the reason it went from being disappointing to being the second worst song (according to them). Personally, I see both sides. It is definitely catchy, and as a kid, I enjoyed it when it came out. As an adult, I understand the complaints and they are legitimate. And even if I don't change the channel right away, as soon as that radio DJ starts up, it's off. It's the sort of stunt I'd expect from middle school students trying to be a rock band, not from veterans of the musical revolution of the sixties and seventies.

Jefferson Airplane changed name to Jefferson Starship to Starship. They started in the 60s and ended in the late 80s. Grace Slick retired in 1990. She said that rockers over 50 look stupid. I think Jagger and others would disagree but she just didn't want to perform anymore. 😊

One of those weird cases, where a band that had a successful career in the 70's, shortens their name from Jefferson Starship, to just Starship, reinvents their sounds with the synths of the new 80's, and does it all again into another successful career with an entirely different sound.

It sounds to me like they're seeing corporations take over the music industry and saying, 'you didn't build that!' WE built this city (starting with Elvis Presley, in a way). Yes, the young build, the artists make something new, the corporations see dollar signs and take over. Oh, and I'm so old I still think of this woman as Gracie Slick from 'White Rabbit' days.
@kympeplau1635

Remember when you did a reaction on Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit with a very young Grace Slick looking scared? Long dark wavy hair with a long dress? Well this is her about 20 years later with 2 personnel and name changes of her band. The DJ referred to in this song was actually a famous DJ from the SF Bay Area. A DJ from the 50’s I think. The band went from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship and finally to Starship. Being born in the 1950’s myself, she was one of my idols as well as Janis Joplin.

Written by English musicians Martin Page and Bernie Taupin (best known for writing most of Elton John's hits). According to Taupin it was about the demise of clubs and live venues in LA, meaning that musicians no longer had anywhere to play live, whereas the city had been 'built on rock and roll'.

I thought they were actually signing about Portland. Then later in HS, I was up near Seatle and it came on the radio where they were singing about Seatle. 🤔 Odd. Then I moved to Orlando and sure as 💩, a voiceover about Orlando. I think every radio station had that voice over about their city. I can't say that I've heard it here in Denver since I moved here 17 years ago. And got to see them in the 90s (don't remember if they were still going by Starship, but maybe they were back to Jefferson again) in a small club in Honolulu when I lived there. We were just going down to play pool and low and behold, they were performing.

They originally started out as Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band based in San Francisco, California, that became one of the pioneering bands of psychedelic rock formed in 1965. Jefferson Starship formed as an American rock band from San Francisco, California by a group of musicians including former members of Jefferson Airplane. In 1984 Starship, Initially a continuation of Jefferson Starship, it underwent a change in musical direction, the subsequent loss of personnel, and a lawsuit settlement that led to a name change. Starship's 1985 album, Knee Deep in the Hoopla, was certified platinum by the RIAA, and included two singles that went to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart: "We Built This City" and "Sara". Hope this information gives you insight into the bands history.

They're song is a tribute to the '68 "Summer of Love" that happened in SF. Ironically they sing of corporations changing their names while they themselves changes their name several times.

Mickey and Graces voices blend so well together! You gotta check out Fooled around and fell in love by Elvin Bishop. Mickey sings lead on that one.

Mickey Thomas has one of the most incredible voices. Listen to him singing lead on Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell In Love”. As a Bay Area native, we take our local rockers serious ;)

After the name change I checked out on Starship and Rock in Roll for a while. I became a single parent and Disco had brought a bad break in Rock and Roll and when it came back it wasn't the same. It was plasticized and fakey to me. I stayed gone until someone played a Stevie Ray Vaughan song (Little Sister) in my headphones. I bought my first SRV album that day. He saved Rock and Roll. At least until he died. Then Hollywood killed it.
