I am not a Chinese, but still listening to Hua. Believe me, regarding his songs, even if there's no lyric, you'll still get the feelings he wants to convey. His despair, sadness, loneliness, joy, his ambition, crave,... all are in his music alone. Cant stop listening again and again~~

He said Jessie J even though she sings English and some people don’t understand the lyrics they feel the melody/music. He said he is just an instrument, part of the music completing it. He said you don’t need to understand the lyrics you just need to focus on your own feelings ☺️❤️
The lyrics and the story behind them were so inspiring and meaningful. ‘Equal to Heaven’ was related to the epic story of Monkey King (Sun Wukong as his name) fighting against evil forces , seeking truth and Buddhist scriptures in a classical novel called Journey to the West. At the beginning of the story, he called himself ‘Great Sage Equal to Heaven’ leading a group of monkeys located in Flower and Fruit Mountain and dared to challenge the authority of Jade emperor of heaven. Then he got defeated and trapped under Five-Finger Mountain transforming from fingers of Buddha. After 500 years, Tang Monk of Tang Dynasty came to save him, so Monkey King and other 2 guys helped Tang Monk fight against evil forces , seek truth and finally obtained the Buddhist scriptures. It was a really moving and inspiring story.
This is his original song. Hua Hua composed it for a movie. It's a epic. His emotional expression is so real and touching. Absolutely one of my favorite song.
The Film is called "Wu Kong", adaptation from Chinese Classic Literature "Journey to the West". Wu Kong is the name of the Protagonist, a Monkey who was born out a magical stone. Wu Kong became a monkey king of his courage among the monkey of Fruit and Flower Mountain. After he realize the concept of dead, he set out to look for the secret of immortality. He then found a sage who is willing to teach him magic as a mean for him to reach immortality. Wu Kong succeeded in mastering a powerful magic ability, and as the stories progress, he shred the Book of Dead owns by the King of Hell and force the King of Hell to never takes his life and all of the monkey in the Fruit and Flower Mountain. This act gain the attention of the Celestial Kingdom, in which the King of Heaven send an army to capture him, but Wu Kong fight them of and claim himself as The Sage Equal to Heaven (hence the name of this song). Wu Kong also have a weapon he took from the Dragon Sea King, a Golden Staff, it's also mention in this song. Eventually, Wu Kong was capture by the Buddha, as powerful as he is, Wu Kong couldn't escape the Palm of Buddha (literally), this also mention in the song. After that, the Buddha imprisoned him under a mountain, and he awaits 500 years before being freed from it by a Monk who is traveling to the west to obtain Buddhist Script. To control the wildness of Wu Kong, Guanyin (a Goddess) gives the monk a Golden Collar to put on Wu Kong's head (this is also mention in the song lyric), whenever he lose control, the Monk will recite a mantra that will make his head very painful, therefore he had no choice but to obey the monk. The Monk became his master, not in the meaning of a ruler, but a teacher. In the end, Wu Kong learn the teaching of Buddhist and became a Buddha along with the Monk and his two other disciple. The Collar actually means a way to control ones emotion or desire. This is a very simple explanation, didn't cover much of the actual story, but I hopes to help you understand a bit more of the Lyric. The way Huahua put it, he is using this story to talk about life. For those who doesn't understand Chinese and never knew the story of Journey to the West, it's very hard to understand what he is saying in his lyric.
I'm glad more and more people are discovering Huahua.. but I'm also saddened sometimes as well because I truly believe he deserves more attention. He is freaking amazing.

He is like an artist than paint me lots of pictures with the way he portrays emotions through singing. Hua Chenyu is incredible and this is his original song. He usually do not write lyrics himself but he is very picky and will reject lyrics that not up to his standard and made the lyricist rewrite it many time. Thanks for your nice reactions
This is the first song from Hua I listened to. There were many singers I liked before I came across Hua, but he is the only one I love. Love his music and him as a human being.

To fully understand this song, you need to read the Chinese Classic Novel "Journey to the West" (西遊記). It is a novel written by Wu Cheng'en (吳承恩) in the 16th century during the Ming Dynasty. The novel is an account of the pilgrimage of the Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk called Xuanzang (玄奘). He travelled to the west (Central Asia and India) to obtain the Buddhist sacred texts (sutras). During his journey, the monk Xuanzang (玄奘) was escorted by three protectors who helped him as atonement for their own sins. The three protectors are Sun Wukong (孫悟空. The Monkey King. This is the mythical monkey figure this song is all about), Zhu Ba Jie (豬八戒. This is the mythical pig figure), and Sha Wujing (沙悟淨 or 沙僧. He was originally a general in heaven). In addition to the three protectors, Xuanzang (玄奘) was given a white steed to ride on (The White Dragon Horse, also known as Bai Long Ma 白龍馬). This song, Qi Tian (齊天), is a soulful cry of Sun Wukong (孫悟空, the Monkey King) for freedom and the atonement of his sins. Until his sins are completely forgiven and his freedom granted, he cannot escape the palm of the Buddha, which to him, is bigger than heaven and earth. The Golden Fillet around his head, which he cannot remove, is the magic headband designed to reign in his unruly, rebellious nature. Whenever he gets out of line, Xuanzang (玄奘) can make the headband constrict and cause Sun Wukong (孫悟空) tremendous pain. This is how Xuanzang (玄奘) keeps Sun Wukong (孫悟空) in line and under control. The rap parts of the song perfectly depict the chaos and violence during all the battles that he fought to protect Xuanzang (玄奘) from harm. I hope this little explanation helps you all understand the background and gain a better appreciation for the song, which is phenomenal. On a side note, the name of the song, Qi Tian (齊天), is rather oddly translated to "Equal to Heaven". Qi Tian (齊天) is normally used in Chinese culture as a form of blessing or to describe the wealth of a person. For example, you would say that a person is so rich that his wealth reaches up to the heaven, or that somebody's ambition is so high that it reaches up to the heaven, or that a mountain is so high that it reaches up to the heaven. The idea is to convey grandeur, something so majestic that it rises up so high that it touches heaven.
