So just heads up Knox, the music and lyrics were written by Andrew Loyd Webber for the stage play of Phantom of the Opera. Nightwish simply did an awesome rendition of the original track. If you ever get the chance you should listen/watch the Albert Hall Performance of this amazing piece of art. Much love, always enjoy your reactions!

The phantom of the opera in general is one of my favourite Andrew Loyd Webber musicals, so many outstanding songs and this track is no exception. Nightwish do such an amazing amazing version of it! Glad you seem to like it! If you love the rock and opera combo Nightwish have loads to dive into.

The matching is no accident, she could do that on purpose and did. On some other songs she has a different vibrato or none at all, whichever fits best... what an outstanding talent. But it's really the warmth of her voice that gets me every time, high and low.

My favourite adaptation & performance of this song! It has the phantom's monstrosity on clear display, unlike most versions - more Nosferatu than Dracula - and their voices in one combined, just awesome! A side note: the lyrics were co-written by Richard Stilgoe, who is best known to Brits of my age for regularly writing and performing skit songs on current affairs programs back in the 70s. He ploughed his royalties from the musical into charity work, and runs (or ran, I'm not sure) a centre for young disabled performers.

I remember seeing the movie when I was around 8 years old, and I watched it twice in a row because it was the most hypnotizing movie to me. That was my first introduction to "opera," and it's one of the most beautiful love stories in my opinion. The balance of good versus evil, love versus hate, and how you can find a little of both in each other at times.

As others may mention, this is not an original Nightwish song. This is a cover/adaptation of the "lead" song from the original stage show written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and iirc performed by Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. Hence why all the references you were correctly picking up, they are the original lyrics. Sir Andrew is also on record as saying he absolutely loves this version. And no doubt you'll get lots of requests to listen to the more recent Nightwish version with Floor and Henk Port. A word of warning if you do decide to react to it.....don't get drawn into comparisons (as it'll no doubt trigger certain people in the comments!) Floor and Tarja have totally different voices, just sit back and enjoy them both.

Great reaction as always. As incredible as their cover is ,Nightwish's original songs are even better. Any song from their set at Wacken Open Air 2013 is epic and features Floor Jansen rather than Tarja. For epic, try Ghost Love Score For pure hardcore symphonic metal try, Romanticide For the best example of the Poetic genius that is Toumas Holapainen you'll be blown away by , The Poet and the Pendulum. It's a nod and an intentional refernce to Edgar Alan Poe

It’s a really hard song to sing you really need to have experience to sing this song and they both are doing it incredible. When the musical first was performed some of the songs were not finished and they used others if I remember correctly. This song was written with Sarah Brightman in mind and the song demands a lot from a singer. From the musical Chess the song Anthem was written for the singer Tommy Körberg, he is not trained as a singer at all. The musical chess was realised 1984, you can find a mv with him when they recorded it in the polar studios in Stockholm 1984. The musical was written by Benny Andersson, Tim Rice and Björn Ulvaeus. Tommy has done a performance with Celine Dion with the song Beauty and the Beast that one is fun to watch, her reaction to him singing is interesting the background for it that when they did the sound check he was very raspy and it didn’t sound that good because he was sick and wanted to save his voice for the performance.

Great reaction, but for possible future Nightwish reactions I'd recommend getting recommendations for their songs with deeper lyrics (given your expertise), as the band has some great ones. For example, The Poet and the Pendulum (live at Wembley Arena for my favorite performance).

The Poet and the Pendulum is one of the most important, if not THE most important songs for Nightwish and their army. You won't do it justice if you make a casual wednesday react out of it without knowing the background of the song. I HIGHLY recommend to do some research on that song and its history before reacting to it.

What in the siren song is happening? A classically trained singer with a 3 octave range is singing a song from an opera. This is not an original Nightwish song, this is the song Phantom of the Opera, from the opera Phantom of the Opera with the music changed from the original to rock music. No shade, bands do covers all the time and this adaptation is perfect for Tarja to show off her vocal talents.
