Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, and Layne Staley of Alice in Chains are widely considered to be the “Big Four” of Grunge music. Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots was another big voice of the era.

@@soude85 Yeah, it was mostly born out of the resentment for Nirvana I think 😄 The grunge movement took a lot of attention away from the bands that were big at that time (like Guns 'n Roses etc.). MTV Unplugged... should have called it Midas, 'cause almost everything it touched turned to solid gold. Pearl Jam is one of the big four Grunge bands from the early 90s, all of which shared one thing in common: each had a once-in-a-generation sort of voice leading them - Kurt Cobain for Nirvana, Layne Staley for AIC, Chris Cornell for Soundgarden, and here Eddie Vedder for Pearl Jam.

The song itself is gorgeus, but Ed's voice and raw emotion in this performance just takes it to a whole other(wordly) level. If you'd take some suggestions for Pearl Jam: Jeremy, the official ucensored video for the music and the message, and Porch live at Pinkpop '92 for the sheer lunacy of the live show (still an amazing song). Eddie Vedder saved me from seriious harm. Iin 1993 I went to see them as a 16 year old. During the concert the crowd moved forward and i got trampled. I was on the floor and people were standing on top of me. Ed saw what was happening and called to rhe audience to get me up. I was crowdsurfed over to security with nothing more than a few bruises. This was even before Roskilde, and only when that happened, I realised how lucky I had been.

Experiencing Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam live is something you never forget. They’re incredible live. And they’ve all done side projects and/or solo stuff over the years but always return to the group to create this kind of magic. PJ’s original singer died from an overdose. As I remember the story Eddie was living down in San Diego and doing a lot of surfing. I think he heard they were looking for a new singer and he sent them a demo cassette. He got the call and went up to Seattle and the rest is history. In addition to PJ stuff check out Eddie’s Ukulele Songs and his soundtrack work from Dead Man Walking and Into the Wild. And don’t miss Hunger Strike with Eddie and Chris Cornell from their side project Temple of the Dog. I saw that as a live acoustic performance at Lollapalooza and it was incredible.

Eddie actually stuffed up the second verse, which is when he shakes his head but being the professional he is, he just goes with it.

We had some pretty amazing talent in the vocalist department around this time. Eddie Vedder in Pearl Jam, Layne Staley in Alice in Chains, Chris Cornell in Soundgarden (then Chris did some awesome stuff with Audioslave). And all of those bands (as well as Curt Cobain in Nirvana) knew how to write fantastic music with poetic and profound lyrics when they wanted to. I think you would appreciate hearing Eddie Vedder performing the song he did for the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert/album. He did “Masters of War” and it is sooooo good! It would also be great to see you dive into some more Alice In Chains. Unlike most people, I do not recommend the Unplugged versions of these. To me, watching Layne was just sad and he lacked his usual power. We were watching a dead man walking on that show. Just go with the regular video or album versions instead. Some good ones to get you started are: Rooster Down In A Hole (talk about some poetic lyricism…this definitely has that in spades) Would? Them Bones Rain When I Die

Grew up on his music through my Mom, who sees him any chance she can get. He's finally coming back here in the summer, and I know my Mom will love it. Bought one of his best albums for her birthday later - Vs. has some of his best music in my opinion. I recommend Indifference or Daughter
