That is Steven Stills on lead vocals and this song is about folk singer Judy Colins whom he was dating at the the time. Our House another one of their songs is about Joni Mitchell whom Graham Nash was in a relationship with. Joni Mitchell is a Canadian folk artist. Joni Mitchell's song The River is about the breakup of her and and Graham Nash's relationship. Graham Nash is British Steven Stills and David Crosby are American Neil Young Canadian (from my hometown of Winnipeg) A suite is a set of songs that can either be played together or separately. Love this song! Their harmonies are second to none! Cheers
The version by Jefferson Airplane is even better, and more pointed politically. It was co-written by David Crosby of CSN and Paul panther of Jefferson Airplane.
Such a great song. Regarding the title: it's a play on words. In music, a "Suite" is a collection of different shorter pieces combined into one work, just like this is. And they are using "Suite" as a homophone of "Sweet", so when you say it out loud it sounds like "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes".
Stephen Stills wrote it for his former girlfriend, singer Judy Collins, after breaking up, it didn't get her back as he hoped, but the song was a big hit.
He showed up at her door on her birthday with flowers, a bottle of wine, and his guitar. He sang her this song and asked her to get back together. She told him no, but also said it was a great song.
@@ob1wagonobiI’m sorry you feel that way, but I do wish that people would cut them some slack sometimes. They are VERY nice guys, have kids, work multiple jobs and have things going on in their lives that they’re not always going to discuss on camera. And yet they still manage to put on happy faces and put out videos every day. Yes, they could very easily look things up and they sometimes do. But asking people for information in the comments is how they engage with their viewers. They enjoy the discussion. The beauty of RU-vid is that we are not forced to watch content that we don’t enjoy. Maybe another channel would suit you better. A little positivity goes a long way. I hope you have a great rest of your day 😊
@@ob1wagonobi if you hate it so much, like I said, you don’t have to watch it. It’s silly to subject yourself to something knowing that it’s going to irritate you. Why do that to yourself? You’ll be a much happier person if you spend your time on things you enjoy. I really do hope you have a positive rest of your day 😊
@@ob1wagonobibrother cut us a break. We went through 500 songs last year from around 350 bands. We try to do things we've never heard of because most people prefer a reaction to something brand new. If you prefer expert reactions, I'm sure there's a lot of channels out there who know the entire history of CSN.
Potentially the GOAT of vocal harmonies and their songwriting was absolutely on point. Wooden Ships or bring Young in and do Teach Your Children but the live version.
A suite is a separate parts of a song played in order. Terrapin Station from the Grateful Dead is considered a suite. They can play one part as the song or play the whole suite.
Late 70s in high school, driving around in my pickup truck blasting this song with my best friend and singing at the top of our lungs. Great memories....
CSN(Y) was a "supergroup" - all of them were known from earlier bands, so their names had clout with the public. The song is in bits, like a suite of different songs, and it's also a pun "Sweet Judy Blue-eyes". Written by Stephen Stills after he split up with singer Judy Collins, as a way of saying "sorry, please come back." Her reply was "Great song, but haha - no." I always love it when the Spanish bit comes in. Try their "Marrakesh Express" next! :) RIP David Crosby.
There are SO many CSN(&Y) songs you should do. Such an epic band. And Hollywood just said it's so chill, and their whole catalog is like this. So good.
......'suite' means 'set'. In this case we have a set of songs about Judy Blue Eyes. A hotel suite is a set of rooms vs. a single room. The word 'suit' comes from suite. A suit of clothes is a matching set of pants, jacket and vest all cut from the same cloth and matching in colors, etc.....😇
A suite is collection of musical compositions played together. So this suite is called Judy Blue Eyes. It’s also a play on words sounding like Sweet Judy Blues Eyes. And I don’t think young guys realize how short of a time the Beatles were together. They only made music as the Beatles from 1960-1970. The amount of music they put out and the range of musical styles they went through in one decade is absolutely insane! Probably one of the most productive and versatile band of that era.
One of the first "super" groups - David Crosby from the Byrds, Stephen Stills from Buffalo Springfield, and Graham Nash from The Hollies. Their harmonies were among the best ever put to vinyl.
If you watch the movie "Woodstock", this is the song CS&N sing. After which Steven Stills and David Crosby tell the crowd "This is our second gig, man. This is the second time we've ever played in front of people. Were scared shitless."
"Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" takes the unrequited love song to new places. Sweet Judy with the Blue Eyes is Judy Collins, a singer who took the Joni Mitchell composition "Both Sides, Now" to the top of the U.S. charts in 1968. Song birds and angels supply apt metaphors for describing her singing voice. Collins also has intensely blue eyes. They seemed to sparkle when she sang her songs on television way back when I was a kid. Classic song.
Young was them on and off for years. This song is about Judy Collins (prettiest blue eyes ), she and Steven Stills dated. When they broke up he wrote this for Judy. They remained friends even have toured together. The middle guy is Stephen Stills, one sitting on back of couch 🛋 is Graham Nash, and won on thr right is David Crosby (he passed away this past year). I still have my album that I bought in 1969/1970 Graham Nash is from England
The drummer is Dallas Taylor. A studio musician, that appeared on a couple albums and toured with CSN. He is even named on the front cover of the Deja Vu album along with added bassist Greg Reeves. CSN (&Y) always hired a back-up band. Later tours added keys and a percussionist to the bass and drums. @Smokey You seem to be a reader. Check out David Crosby's autobiography Long Time Gone. An insiders look at the music industry in the late 60's to early 70's and a personal tale of what happens when your demons take control.
The last part of the Suite, roughly translates as follows: “¡Que linda! Me la traiga a Cuba La reina de la Mar Caribe Quiero sólo visitarla allí Y que triste que no puedo. ¡Vaya!” Roughly translated means: “So Beautiful! It brought me to Cuba The Queen of the Caribbean Sea I just want to visit her there. So sad I can't. Let’s go!”
A suite is a song with multiple parts. The song is about Stephen Stills then girlfriend singer Judy Collins. Crosby, Stills and Nash uses a drummer and usually a bassist, but Stills played most of the bass on this. The band was the names so anyone could be added (Young) or subtracted (Stills Young Band. Crosby & Nash). They were definitely a supergroup. CSN was founded after Buffalo Springfield broke up (included Stills abd Young), Nash quit The Hollies, and Crosby was fired from The Byrds. They were all then living in the Laurel Canyon neighborhood of Los Angeles at the time. They may or may not have harmonized together for the first time at Mama Cass' house. Different members remember different things. They immediately knew their voices meshed beautifully. The Beatles broke up in 1970.
I have played guitar. Since I was 15 and this song still is hard for me to play because I get too emotional in it. I am 62 now and it makes me cry because it is such a perfect written song.
CSN sang this at Woodstock, telling the crowd that it was their second gig and that they were scared sh*tless. Helplessly Hoping is another song that showcases how incredibly unique their vocal harmonies are. Someone once described David Crosby as "water" Stephen Stills as "fire" and Graham Nash as "Earth"...together, they could not fail.
You were on the right track with some of the stuff you were saying about the band name! They had absolutely raging egos and frequently argued, fought, etc.. over the course of their lives. Neil Young's relationship with Stephen Stills is even more fractious! They made some beautiful music though.
Yep just chill cool great music I was lucky enough to see them back in the 70s. I also saw Neil Young back in the 70s doing his rest never sleeps tour but it was a great era a great time for music, it was a great time to be a teenager and in my early 20s. keep it up guys.
Their 2nd playing live as a group was at Woodstock in front of 400,000 plus ✌️🙂 If you want a real treat check out CSN&Y w/Tom Jones playing... Long Time Gone David Crosby can't stop smiling as Tom Jones blows them all away with the strength of his vioce and the rest of the band joins in and also marvels at Toms amazing voice. Its an all around great performance
They had decided to become a group just before Woodstock, their first gig was Woodstock, and they did this song. They are masterful at harmonizing. This was their first album, which every song is incredible. IMO the best song they did was 49 Bye Byes .. this album, incredible harmonies.
Graham Nash had a huge career in the UK and USA as a member of The Hollies, part of the British Invasion. He met David Crosby, who had just left The Byrds and Stephen Stills who had just left Buffalo Springfield in London and after one session with them, realised he had to chase this dream. So he left the band, packed up and went to California, where they made the first albums. Their voices melded so perfectly. They were one of the first supergroups, where every member had a successful career with a big band before they got together. Neil Young came along, and they became Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Their session at Woodstock, the second time they'd ever appeared together (the first in a small club) was eagerly anticipated because of their previous reputations and they were a smash. Young actually appeared with them, but refused to appear in the movie, so they had to cut his parts.
A "Suite" is classical musical structure typically consisting of three (not always) separate but related movements or musical ideas played in together in sequence. This song has three parts the beginning, the middle and the end with the Latin vibe. It's brilliant and one of their best songs of which there are many. Big rabbit hole to go down if your interested. They had some of the best vocal harmonies ever recorded and don't forget about C,S,N & Y. That came later when the great Neil Young joined them.
Hey Hollywood it is funny you mentioned the Grateful Dead when discussing the CS&N harmonies, because CS&N actually did do a little coaching with The Dead on their harmonies, about this time. And it worked out quite well for all concerned.
A musical "Suite" is a song made up of several different pieces. Tempo and feel changes several times in one composition. "Judy Blue Eyes", is Judy Collins. A former girlfriend of Steven Stills. The lyrics of the song are basically a love letter written to her after they broke up. He was trying to get back together with her...but no luck.
Yes this was a super group. The songs of my youth blessed to have seen them twice. CSN& sometimes Y is the way my brain puts them together. Would love to hear more "Our House" or " I almost cut my Hair", there are so many great ones to choose from. Enjoy
impeccable harmonies and instrumentation. this is the first time i think i have seen some of the lyrics in print and been able to figure out what the hell they are actually singing. thank you.
60s folk. They played this song at Woodstock, in August 1969, and it's called a Suite because the song had multiple distinct movements in how the song went, as far as tempo, and how each section of the song was a different section, as how the song went.
Crosby, Stills, and Nash were all coming out of important bands in the late 60's. Crosby was second fiddle in the Byrds, Nash was part of the Hollies, the band with the second most hits in the 60s after only the Beatles, and Stills was the leader of Buffalo Springfield which broke up because he and Neil Young couldn't get along, which makes it ironic that Young sometimes played with them. The three of them were at a party in Haight-Asbury at the house of Jefferson Airplane when they found out they could harmonize very well. And so they formed a band. But they are not like Rush in that they were not a self-sufficient band. None of them played drums. But they all wrote songs, and they were probably the greatest harmonizers in rock. Here "suite" seems to be a pun on "sweet Judy" and the fact that the song comes off as a collection of songs, and so a suite. One of their first shows, if not their first, was Woodstock. They were so excited about it that they gushed to Joni Mitchell who wrote it up as a song, which they then recorded as Woodstock. Later Neil Young wrote the great protest song Ohio about the Kent State massacre. Their prettiest song is Guinevere. But they have other big hits like Wooden Ships (which they wrote, but was first recorded by Jefferson Airplane) Our House, Teach Your Children, etc. I have been puzzled by the ordering of the names. The Hollies was the biggest band, but Nash gets named last. He even wrote their first hit. Crosby was second fiddle to Roger McGuinn in the Byrds, while Stills was the main writer (although only slightly) of Buffalo Springfield. And yet Crosby gets top billing and Nash is at the end. Maybe it has to do with where their voices lie in the harmonies. Or maybe Crosby just had the biggest ego, and so they had no choice but to let him go first.
These guys were the cat's pajamas back then. Grab the album - the one with the guys sitting on a couch on the cover - kick back and enjoy. You're welcome. (I think the song title is a play on words. Suite/Sweet. Yes, on the supergroup. Funny you should mention the drummer. That's him on the back of the album cover.)
In short, when Judy cut him off, Stills was in morning and tried to write a song, he wrote three, but could finish none, so his mates was like, hell lets combine them and Call it Suite Judy Blue Eyes, as in you can get one room, or a Suite that has two or more rooms in a hotel.
They performed it AT Woodstock. So 1969. They all played guitar, piano, and sang. Stills alone played guitar on this at Woodstock. They told the crowd it was their 2nd, 3rd or 4th gig, "man. Were scared shitless."😅 Check out 'Woodstock' by them, 'Wooden Ships', 'Carry On', 'Teach Your Children', and 'Ohio'. 😉🤙🏼🎶❤️✨️🕊
Suite: Judy Blue Eyes is actually a suite in music terms, a group of self-contained movements or musical ideas of varying character and length, usually in the same key. The title is a play on words as well, because it sounds like "sweet Judy blue eyes" a song aimed at Judy Collins as others have noted. Its a masterpiece in harmony and vocal orchestration, very much in the genre of folk-rock that was stretching the norms of music at that time.
Where do y’all find the funny short videos you play at the beginning of your reactions? So great! ☮️❤️ Also in music suite means a group of self-contained instrumental movements of varying character, usually in the same key.
3 guys who are skilled song writers, acoustic guitarists and singers who worked with many groups before and after their time as a group. They performed at Woodstock with Neil Young for the first time in front of people.
Brand new to the channel.. Love!!! Your MJK journey is the best outta all the YT reaction vids..Curious, if you guys have reacted to APC live at Red Rocks? Wasn’t able to find it. thx 🤘
In 1965, STEPHEN STILLS auditioned for THE MONKEES. he didn't get the job but his roommate PETER TORK did. PETER also gave DAVID CROSBY $25,000 to buy a sailboat in 1968.
The reason that it is Crosby Stills Nash is so that they could preform in any combination they wanted. Try as you next songs by them Cathedral, Southern Cross, Deja Vu. Love following your reactions
The original album cover had a picture of a man looking through a window. It appears to be Neil Young. It is rumored that Neil played on album but did not want credit. Which is unbelievable considering CSN appeared for the first time publicly at Woodstock. Neil played with them but, according to Neil,he yold cameraman not to film him. Why? Because he did not want the camera man getting in the way. That is why he appears no where in the film about Woodstock.
According to sources and liner notes I could find, Stephen Still played many of the parts in this song including the lead guitar parts and the bass line as well. Quite a talent.
Hello guys I just love the whole album Crosby, Stills , Nash are really great together but when Neil Young joined them it got even better. So many great songs from them all. Thanks again guys for this song. You both stay cool stay awesome and real, love ya both ❤ see you soon. Dueces ✌️✌️ everyone.
Stephen Stills brings the Caribbean vibe to CSN. He grew up in the south, including Louisiana, and lived in Central America. One of his greatest songs is "Go Back Home," with a super solo by Eric Clapton. "Stoner rock" is perfectly fine for their vibe!
I've read that Stills was trying to write a song for Judy Collins (they'd recently split), but it was coming in fits and starts. He had pieces, but they were unrelated, weren't cohesive, and didn't work as whole songs on their own. His song just wasn't coming together. Then he thought to put the disparate chunks all together as a suite, and a masterpiece was born.
Nice reaction! I do have a question. Why do you try to put a name on their genre, folk, rock, etc.? You try and do it every reaction. The greatest musicians and groups don't limit themselves. Wherever their creativity goes, they follow. They jump categories, sometimes even in the same song. Music has only two groups to me, good or bad. And that is even personal. My "good isn't your good." I don't Yuck someone's Yum.
There was sooo much creativity in music during those years we didn't "label" it, we just enjoyed it. There's awesome music you'll never hear if you limit it to certain genres.
