Axenrot is a great straight forward heavy drummer. Lopez is heavy but filled with a ton of intricacies. These intricacies are full of Lopez's Latin influences . I freaking love his touch on the cymbals. Little crashes, big crashes, light touches here and there, I just find myself focusing a lot more on all the sounds coming from Lopez's playing than I ever did with Axe's

I think Axe’s work with Opeth shows that he’s not just a heavy drummer. He was showing his versatility right away on Watershed in songs like Lotus Eater, and then he recorded four progressive rock albums after that. His feel was definitely different from Lopez though.

Thank you so much for doing this song. This is most certainly in my top 10 favourite metal songs of all time. 🤘 As a drummer who used to play 8-12 minute metal songs with lots of riffs, I can tell you that I have no idea how I remember how to play a long ass song. Lots of practice and repetition, I suppose. I used to map it out on however many pieces of 8x11 paper I needed for a given song, then play the song over and over again in rehearsal. Eventually I could just play it without the cheat sheets.

Every morning in Afghanistan/Iraq would listen to these bad hombres and lamb of god, and white chapel, all the truly epic, hard, hard core metal of the time and slightly older, cause that era is the only time you get hardcore metal and death metal. Pumps you up, to do go do work. And yes they’re ‘prog’ metal…but they are death metal from their lyrics and style, at least half of it, the rest is prog.

But legit they were far better for this than now…I’ve recommended for years now, as long as I can remember reaction vids to music, so like 4-5 years now, everyone else only does newer stuff, or at least not as far back… and is lame, as they ignore the best music ever done by a group, so congrats and is amazing that you two finally broke the cookie cutter mold, I applaud you.

Metal vocalists can easily blow out their vocal chords, but many have learned to do it without straining the voice, but it usually requires a vocal coach to help. I know for a fact Randy from Lamb of God and M.Shadows from Avenged Sevenfold have used vocal coaches in the past, but I suspect most of the modern metal vocalists have learned the same methods.
@flightgravity7483
@flightgravity7483 2 года назад
Also consider that this is a live version, and Lopez is not playing it the same way he did in the studio. All the basic framework is there, he lays down the familiar grooves, but almost every fill he played here is not in the studio version. There are even tons of little flourishes and accents here that he didn’t play in the studio. There were even tempo changes that may or may not have been intentional, but the band still remained cohesive. As for remembering everything, practice and repetition. It’s just like having a favorite song and listening to it so much that you know it like the back of your hand.

I’m a singer more than a screamer. Hahaha. But anyway, I do know that if your throat hurts when you’re doing the scream-o thingy then you’re doing it wrong. It’s basically like a vocal fry type thing. I can do it a little but it’s better if I don’t. 😂
@perhvarnes
@perhvarnes 2 года назад
As a screamer, I can say that you're right. But, to get to a certain level, you'll go through stages where you hurt your throat for not knowing better 😏 And when you know how, you still need to warm up, just like clean singers do before singing really high notes.
@NooDLES411911
@NooDLES411911 2 года назад
@Per AHF Hvarnes I'm not a musician at all, but I'm a fan of music ever since I can remember. How do you do the growls without messing up your throat? I always hear people say it comes from the diaphragm but it doesn't work for me. I try to mimic any deep vocals I end up coughing after 5 seconds lol
@perhvarnes
@perhvarnes 2 года назад
@@NooDLES411911 I really haven't studied the physical theory behind it, but rather learned by trying out in the car. The lowest growls aren't my strength though. If you start with the high pitch non voiced growls (like black metal vocals), you can try to make them lower (more gutteral) as if if you were trying to speak or sing in a lower voice. Begin with clearing your throat, making a harking sound that doesn't damage your throat, but still makes a sound. Try to make a little resistance as you let the air go through your pipes, and see if you can make it last. For high pitch screams (I guess it's what they call "fry vocal"), just try to sing some notes and loosen up your throat. I don't know how to explain it specifically, but it's as if you do the clearing of the throat as you let your voice continue. This is where you should always avoid to put strain on your voice, which is typically the reason for a sore throat afterwards. Learn to know your own muscles, use your stomach for pressure, try and fail, repeat and succeed. I guess 😁 Low gutterals are probably easier for bass singers (I'm a tenor), but as I said, one can expand the screams, as long as it's done without strain. Good luck! There are several good videos in this on RU-vid, where you can learn more theoretical techniques.

That being said Martin Lopez has a nice style, his groove and fills is very tasteful.
