Your biggest mistake was not to watch the Anesthetize live from Tilburg.. It is even better than this album version. So React 2.0 on that one? ;) ** EDIT ** If you do not want to do a second viewing of this entire song live (even that you really, really should), you should at least check out the drummer, Gavin Harrsion, playing the middle part of this song on Modern Drummer festival 2008: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6suv3mraIhw.html At least for your own enjoyment. Video would be nice though. ;D ** EDIT 2 ** That guitar solo was by Alex Lifeson from Rush.

@@gabriellacsarsen7814 I'm 70 (closer to 71), so have been through a lot of different genres over the years. I've not been able to get into Dream Theater. I do try every now and then though. Opeth...until I discovered their last two albums (In Cauda Venenum ((English version)) and (Sorceress) I couldn't listen due the the harsh growling. Their last 2 albums though, I can't get enough of. Same with Gojira (Magma); couldn't stand them until I googled which album had clean vocals, so now I can listen to those, and they're really good. I think you should give those a try. You may be as amazed as I still am. The other day I discovered a band called Wheel, and their album Moving Backwards, and Lucid Planet/Lucid Planet. If you're like me, you'll enjoy those as well. A shorter PT work but to the same quality: "Trains". The guy behind this is Steve Wilson, who runs PT and plays his own stuff. SW / PT are all ab out heart and feels, not the $$ which dominates most music today. That's way this feels so good... Try "The Raven that Refused to Sing" - topic - what if you get old old, but realise you had lived all your life in fear. Brilliant work. I'd say there are two complete bands: for shorter, radio-orientated works: The Who (60's band, hard edged version of Beatles / Rolling Stones, try "Baba O'Riley") and SW/PT who are on the prog Yes / ELP side. These bands produce works of genius. If want some Yes, try "Siberian Khatru"; for ELP, try "Knife Edge".

If you do another PT song, may I recommend "Arriving Somewhere but not Here" (live from Octane Twisted-audio only, but a great live performance). And as far as I'm aware, the band never said where the name came from, but it seems like an inside joke!

Welcome to Porcupine Tree. They are my favorite band other than RUSH. Got literally addicted to them in 2005 to now. Gavin Harrison is amazing, very musical drumming. Plenty of material for ya'll to review. Shout out to you guys from up in Gainesville, GA. Check out Even Less from Octane Twisted live tour.

The solo is by Rush's guitar player btw:) Please check Arriving Somewhere But Not Here as well. Great song. And as a matter of fact it also features a solo by a guest guitarist - Mikael from Opeth. A masterpiece like Anesthetize is.

Porcupine Tree, my favorite band along Tool. Steven Wilson (singer and guitars) now went solo and has other incredible musicians on his roster. Check out Ancestral or Home Invasion/Regret #9. And if you are feeling down sometime, dont listeb to Routine... its only the saddest song ever written.

Steven Wilson is amazing. Multi talented. First saw Porcupine Tree live way back in the 90's (yes I'm old haha) You might actually enjoy some of his solo stuff too. Check out "The Raven Who Refused To Sing" or more recently "Pariah"

If your gonna go down this rabbit hole then the next stop is King Crimson. The drummer for Porcupine Tree is Gavin Harrison. He is also one of the 3 drummers for King Crimson. King Crimson started in 1969 and are still around today. They inspired Tool. The song you need to hear is Starless. There is a live version from a couple of years ago where all 3 drummers are playing. Its Tool esque with the build up and the crescendo at the end.

One thing about prog is it is a broad classification of genres stretching from the 60's to today. You have very melodic and psychedelic bands like Caravan and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, more jazzy groups like King Crimson (who porcupine tree's lead singer Steven Wilson did all the remasters for), lighter groups like Gentle Giant and Spock's Beard, more technical groups like Rush and Emerson Lake and Palmer, and heavier groups like Dream Theater. While things like polyrhythms are not universal what is consistent is a willingness to play technically, not having to stick to basic song structures, and not being worried about its audience "not getting it."

@@yomo1690 ugh, shut up hahah. Gavin is most probably more well rounded than Danny. I've been drumming for 11 years, I listen to them both meticulously. Danny is brilliant, but there are drummers better than him. You haven't seen enough Gavin Harrison clips.
