Because of the decisions by King Frederick, his daughter Rapunzel became tied to ancient magical entities and over the years since her birth she has slowly began to learn about those connections. Through her discussions with members of the brotherhood and her discoveries in the temple of Zhan Tiri, Rapunzel has discovered the dark powers that lie within her. Even though at one point she was capable of sustaining life, she now has the incantation that can take it away.

I have a teaser for you, what if shes actually a means to end ancient magic in her time. And the moon drop and sun drop incantations are in reality a duet to heal using the energy around her instead of using her own energy. (An anime called The Lost song, has a healing song and destruct song that's actually a duet, and what made me think of this)

Through the healing incantation we see the golden light from from her head through hear hair outwards. Through the hurting incarnation we see her hair turn black from the ends and pull energy into her. Maybe repunzle still has the ability to heal through her hair only now to access it she needs to absorb life through the new incantation. Like to fuel the life she gives she needs to remove it from somewhere. Just like how the flower was removed from its spot and it's sacrifice fueled the power inside her until her hair was severed. Plants evolve many ways to protect themselves and adapting it's opposites defence isn't impossible to conclude. Just my thoughts.

That's exactly what I thought! "1) I think the decay incantation is incomplete. The healing incantation has two recognizable verses, while we've only heard one for the decay incantation. (We saw the full translation of the heal song, but never saw whether the decay one was as well.) Things that are incomplete are often inherently unstable, which could explain why it was so potent - effecting everyone rather than an individual - and why Raps couldn't control it."

Did anyone else notice the green energy getting absorbed into Rapunzel's hair before she herself absorbed them? I had a thought that this could symbolize her obtaining the energy and life force of others in the opposite way that the healing gave youth and extended one's life force. Thus possibly the sun flower could've taken some of Rapunzel's energy and life force to heal others, while the moon drop gathers energy and life force giving it to her.

I think this only applies to magic (The Tree's Heart), as well as the amber Varian's father was in (alchemy-altered Black Rocks from the MoonStone). My reason for this is because we saw something similar when Rapunzel first used the Moon Incantation - through her black hair, we saw purple/dark energy flowing outwards from the roots of her hair. This is the same as the Healing Incantation as when it's used, the sun's energy flows outward of Rapunzel's hair. The healing powers of the Sun are shining outward, just like the dark powers of the Moon are shining outward. However, whenever the Moon comes in contact with magic, or let's say other forms of energy or light, the Moon can absorb or more accurately, destroy it. This doesn't mean, however, that the Moon is evil or symbolizes death or decay. In fact, I believe the Moon symbolizes change and renewal, as well as spirituality - ideas of letting go of material things and ascending or connecting with spirits. This comes from how the Moon is always waxing and waning - always different, always changing, and how the Moon is usually associated with magic, the dark arts, and all things supernatural.

Legends. "Mother" Gothel was very, very, very old and used the Sundrop's magic to stay alive and considering the fact that we don't know since when did she started using it, that scroll could've been written around the same time she was growing up

Well since Adira wants to neutralize the moonstone I think Rapunzel and possibly Varian(since Rapunzel's hair became similar to his hair color, so he could possibly have a bit of the moonstone's magic) together they could revert the moonstone's magic to not be used for hurting others but healing instead. This would allow Rapunzel's hair to return to its healing ability and giving the moonstone a greater purpose then just darkness.(who says the moon has to be dark, the sun can just be as dark) Also, the reason I think Varian is connected/or linked to the moonstone, is his father being affected by the moonstone blast, his black/blue hair that looks similar to the rocks, him going down a dark is similar to the rocks being dark, neutralizing the moonstone could represent him reforming, and him being the opposite of Rapunzel.

(I don't remember what episode) But when the moonstones show Rapunzel a path, which I think it might be a way of her getting a healing incarnation back, (but this was before the wedding with Eugene) so maybe she will loose both incarnations because someone (probably someone close to her) but her hair, but I think that she will have both incarnations but will also randomly loose it, So she follows the moonstones to find something because it's telling her to find something that will probably be important.

Lavender Rose I agree with your theory, but I think it's not just Varian that's conneted to Rapunzel's magic but also Cassandra. Since both she and Varian were adopted, it is possible that some how, some way, could hold the key to help Rapunzel fix this mess.

Lavender Rose also, you know how Demanitus had to make a machine that's powered by magic and science. Well, you know how the creators purposefully made Rapunzel and Varian the total opposites. Rapunzel uses magic while Varian, respectfully, uses science. Demanitus' machine only contains Zhan Tiri which is why I believe that both Rapunzel AND Varian are the ones who can truly stop him once and for all. I didn't believe that Rapunzel was the only one with a destiny since there's so many foreshadowing and hints.

Yea she ia totally a vessel for both entities and I believe she would have to choose to continue corrupting the dark kingdom or save it. Once she saves it would be revealed they were actually the sundrop power origin place that got corrupted by evil when the moondrop was introduced. After Rapunzel saves the kingdom a enitiy in the form of a angel will grant Rapunzel a wish being to end this Destiny and giving up the power

I like to think that even though the SunDrop is gone, along with the Moonstone, returning to the heavens, that Rapunzel still has some of the healing magic from the Sun Flower as she was essentially born from/with it when she was still in her mother's womb. Yes, she may not be on God Level power like she was in the finale, but I can see her, the princess of Corona, still being able to heal those who have been harmed.

You keep calling the powers of the moondrop evil, but does it have to be? If you listen to the lyrics of the moondrop incantation, it doesn't come across as a definite evil, but more of an opposite to the sundrop. (Wither and decay, End this destiny, Break these early chains and set the spirit free) The end is a natural part of every journey. To me, it seems like the sundrop is a way to prolong the journey (by backtracking perhaps, like with the de-aging of Mother Gothel), while the moondrop shortens it (by fast-tracking, like with Cassandras hand?) In a more litteral sense, I'd say the sundrop preserves the vessel, keeping the spirit chained to the body (like when Rapunzel brought Eugene back at the end of Tangled). The moondrop, on the other hand, releases the spirit from its vessel. Normally we'd choose the suns power, but what if the vessel was corrupt and worked more like a prison for the spirit trapped inside? Then the power of the sun would only help keep the spirit trapped. Either way, we've already seen that the suns power can be abused (Mother Gothel showed us that), so both powers can be used for evil deeds, but that doesn't necessarily make the powers themselves evil.

Death is just as natural as Life. It's only frowned upon because it would mean you would have to let go (loved ones, sentimental objects, memories, even yourself). The SunDrop has been seen as the ultimate force of good because it could heal injuries, grant health and longevity, and for Eugene (in the Tangled movie) it was capable of saving him from death. But eternal life isn't as good as its been made tk look, just like death isn't solely a bad thing nor is it something to consider as evil. Death is release, letting go and moving on. And by doing so, you grow wiser, maybe you'll grow colder or bitter, but you still learn from death. And you realize, we all value life because death gives it value. The pain, the sorrow, the lost, they all exist because they're meant to teach us how to live, what it means to live, and why we should live. And they teach us why, after many trials and errors, we should keep living, even if things will never be the same. The Sun may be a beacon of light, but the Moon will always guide those who are lost in the dark.

Rapunzel singing that incantation was so creepy... I loved it. Although I don’t think Rapunzel has any healing magic left in her, she used the last of it to save Eugene. Although I did notice he was definitely the weakest when she was singing, he literally collapsed. Maybe the moonstone also has the power to undo the effects of the sun drop.

The Sundrop heals what has been hurt, it changes the fate's design. It has power to bring life to the body and form. The Moonstone (Or drop? Opal) has that cheeky line in there "break the earthly chains and set the spirit free" which sounds like its priority is the soul, the immortal, which it rids of its always decaying and aging vessel. If the sundrop change's fate, and the moonstone brings it to an end, is it fate of all things to end? Instead of bringing back what has been lost, you get lost in it? Thats my opinion anyways. To me, they preformed the duality of the sun and moon themes pretty well. Ps. I, personaly, and i could be wrong, took the tear from the movie as the sundrop powers end, but not its permanent end. We had learned that the sundrop was literaly a drop akin to light that fell from the sun onto the earth, taking organic form. In that way, when Rapunzel's tear fell on the dying nose guy XD, the light was greater than ever before with amazing shapes. The sundrops final release into the atmosphere? Idk im just blabing as i go XD

tbh i think you’re right. when you think about it the sun incantation doesn’t actually heal, it reverses things to a former condition. delaying the inevitable, pulling it back to be controlled. this new moon incantation seems to accelerate things to a newer condition. accepting the inevitable, progressing it, opening a cage and letting a bird go free. it’s the difference between traveling up a river versus down a river; same medium, different path.

I think those who have been granted or healed by the sundrop will be affected by the hurt incantation badly since its basically the moondrop's essence overpowering the sundrop's in Rapunzel's body. She's a vessel and one power can affect the other if she chooses to use the other.

The moonstone kills whoever touches it right? How exactly would he ever *realistically* go about doing this? I'm not saying it's impossible, but that sounds like something that would require someone of Lord Demanitus' caliber and knowledge to pull off.

@@NightoftheLivingcookies10 I suppose that's possible... In regards to his blue streak, it's possible that it simply came from previous alchemy experiments. If I recall, during the episode "Quest for Varian", Cassandra and Eugene started messing with Varian's chemicals. One of which blew up in Eugene's face, and after it does, he had similar looking strips across his hair as well. Grant it, his hair was also completely pink, and the strips were light pink, but they looked incredibly similar to the highlight in Varian's hair in aesthetic (much moreso than the moving, pulsating blue energy that could be seen along Rapunzel's hair). Additionally, blue is often used as a color to highlight black things in stylized cartoons and comics. So it's also possible that it's just a highlight/reflection of the light and not actually blue at all. Really, I'm just trying to say that their are several possible explanations to the art choices rather than just something that's hugely significant in the lore of the show.

What if the moonstone takes life because it fuels the sundrop? Life near the stone drains and that life force is sent to the flower, which redisperses that essence. But the stone may need to be close enough to life for it to work and it eventually ran out of nearby life to drain. The sundrop was being used by Gothel for so long that maybe Rapunzel's healing of Eugene was what was left. Healing from death itself may have cost a lot so she didn't have any more essence left to heal others when her hair came back. And, if that's the case, maybe Gothel using the sundrop made the moonstone drain more and more until it couldn't reach any further; so Gothel was indirectly responsible for the devastation the moonstone caused. If that theory is correct, that would mean Rapunzel can heal others again, but she would have to drain life to do it.

Perhaps the reason the dark kingdom is so corrupted is that the Moonstone is never moved so the area never gets a chance to recover (makes sense from real-world land degradation perspective)

Its not Dark magic! Just because the sun drop's incarnation light's up the hair, doesnt mean the moon drop is darkness. Its life/death, heal/hurt. Some fans have a theory that the moon drop's power is good, cuz of the philosophy of life being suffering and sellfish to wish to prolong it(Gothel) and death being a release. Sorry for bad english :-)

I don’t think the Moon drop is necessarily evil. While it can be destructive, how much so depends on who or if anyone is controlling it. Many comments for the videos with footage of the incantation say that this may be more of a yin and yang situation, not a good and evil situation. When it comes to light and darkness, each needs the other to exist, and too much of either can be equally bad. The Sun and Moon in fiction have always been my favorite topics to talk about. And I agree, both are capable of good and evil, creation and destruction. The Sundrop has been known to heal, but later in the show, we see that it can be very powerful, and just as destructive. With the Moonstone, we've only seen its destructive capabilities, but it was never explored in the show what else it was capable of. We've only seen the black rocks and the red rocks, but that was kind of it. I wished the show had explored it more

There might be a hidden battle between light and dark raging inside her. Maybe always had since she grew her hair back, but evil has grown stronger because of her reciting the incantation. I think that this battle is going to show and will play a big role in the new conflict with Cassandra, who could be purely filled with the moon stone's hurt magic.

Light and dark need to exist, but darkness dosent like that. So my theory is that the moon stone is drawing rapunzel to destroy her since she is now the "sun drop" But we all know light overcomes dark, but she wont distory it but in a sense suck in the darkness of the moon stone creating a balance of dark and light. Rapunzels father took it from the earth so the balance was unbalanced, wotch would explain why the rocks are distroying everything. So reuniting the sundrop with the moonstone balnce will be restored. Oh and also think aboutit, the monn and sun are very important to life on earth. Okay this just went in a completely circle. So in a nut shell shes gonna be the balance of goodness and darkness.

I disagree, I think the moon drop is trapped in the dark kingdom, I think that zantiri (not sure about the spelling) corrupted the moondrop, trapping it in the kingdom. I think that while the moondrop's ability to take life is not a useful gift, I believe that the incantation can be used to free spirits such as the corrupted great tree spirit. The way it takes over Rapunzel kind of reminds me of a wounded animal, lashing out at everything nearby. I think this is going to take an approach like the goddess tefiti in moana, wounded and attacking, but will calm once the sundrop (Rapunzel) is reunited with it.

@@RikkuTakanashi not anymore than possession is giving life. "Free the spirit from these mortal chains" could just mean separating a trapped spirit from a prison. But maybe because the moondrop is lashing out it isn't bothering to seperate the soul from the vessel (keep in mind the only times that we have seen the hurt incantation has been in times of fear or stress, so not a good baseline)

@@felixgrosse5093 Her stress level seemed nervous at best to begin with, and it was super high the second time. I mean, I guess it could free a trapped spirit but at what cost? The first time it was clearly sapping the energy of everyone in the room, save rep. The second time she had more control and awareness since she was expecting it and was able to channel it specifically to her hair. Though, even touching her arm got cass burned so not complete control. In fact, why didn't Adiri get burned when she tackled rep before? Maybe because it was less concentrated then later.

@@RikkuTakanashi I think you're right, but moreso I think the difference was that Rapunzel was absorbing the energy of the green flower the second time, I think with that energy she became a sort of conductor for the spirit which then burnt Cass, as opposed to the first time where it was just a generalized sapping of energy

@@RikkuTakanashi also that was only the second time that Rapunzel used the hurt incantation and other than cass, there were no casualties, even Hector seemed to be spared, only the flower and the corrupted spirit were destroyed. I suspect that Rapunzel will get much better at controlling the moondrop and eventually may not even need to destroy a vessel to free a trapped spirit.

I have a theory that this episode basically confirmed that Varian is the moon child just as Raps is originally the child of the sun. That’s actually why I got so excited seeing the moon incantation for the first time. Think about it, when Raps harnesses the sun incantation, her hair doesn’t turn a different color, it just glows. Now look at Raps hair when she recited the moon incantation. Black with streaks of blue right? That looks kind of familiar doesn’t it? There’s no way that is a coincidence. I believe that Varian will eventually also be able to harness the sundrop’s power, turning his hair blonde as well as the moon. The name Varian means variable which means he has sides so this means he may not just be evil or just be able to hold the moon incantation. Raps and Varian will probably have to work together to achieve one big ultimate goal probably regarding the dark kingdom. The rocks are also calling to him, not just Raps which is why I believe Quiran was trying to keep Varian away from the rocks. Quiran was trying to keep Varian away from following his destiny towards the dark kingdom because he knew that he and Rapunzel were the keys to destroying the moon opal. The letter Quiran wrote likely contains the information Varian needs to know about him being the child of the moon powers and his destiny with these rocks/the dark kingdom similar to Raps along with the moon incantation. Your assuming the power is "evil" rather then simply misunderstood. It's very weaponized. Destructive, hard to destroy, like a well made sword. But a sword is not evil unless used for evil purposes. The first time she used it, she was overwhelmed by the power, but she was clearly still aware. She could hear them begging her to stop and thus was crying when she couldn't. The second time, she was MUCH more aware and while she had no direct control, all she had to do was stop singing for a length of time to end it. Far, far more control then she had just, likely, hours before. The Moondrop power is a weapon, the Sundrop, a healing spell. A healer can do evil by choosing not to heal those in need, and a fight can do good by choosing not to kill when the time isn't right for it. I do agree she likely has some Sundrop power left in her. Even if her hair was a catalyst for her power, it clearly wasn't the only one; i.e her tears. It really makes no sense that she'd lose the power entirely, simply because she cut her hair. I mean, we lose and regrow hair ALL THE TIME. If the power was simply in the existing hair she was born with, well, she certainly didn't have the same hair as an adult as she did when she was a baby. I get the feeling her hair was like a overflow bank. When she was full, it would fill her hair and bits of the power would naturally be shed when some fell out or was plucked loose with all her hair shenanigans. The Sundrop likely aided in strengthening her a great deal and aided in it's growth as well. Growing hair takes resources which is why malnourished people tend to lose their hair over time. That her hair was so strong, healthy, and long, spoke to either a lot of personal resources being used, OR the sundrop taking the place of those natural resources. Since a rather significant bank of that energy was lost with her hair cut, and since she didn't have as ready a medium to channel it into anymore, I feel like she didn't lose her sundrop power at all. She just didn't have a convenient means or need to use it. And, once she touched the more potent and fresh Moondrop, it overtook her Sundrop power AFTER using some of it to regrow her hair. Otherwise, if the Sundrop wasn't involved at all, her hair would have regrown black, not blond. I feel the sudden over abundance of Moondrop forced her hair to regrow just so her body could handle this sudden surge in power, and it pushed all the Sundrop left on the surface down into the newly grown hair. I feel like Rep can generate Sundrop power; that she's the source of it now. But, because her stores are so low, and because she's also now generating Moondrop power, her production of Sundrop has likely be paused in favor of the Moondrop power.

I think they’re still going to find more about the incantation and that it is somehow going to involve an evil spirit. The healing incantation ended with “Bring back what once was mine” and therefore healing by bringing the health back to a previously balanced state. This incantation has a different goal (besides killing) because: “Break this earthy chain, And set the spirit free” is clearly saying something about freeing a spirit. And the way she gets possessed and can’t stop singing must be somehow related to that. And also, this new incantation is smaller and there might be something missing. I think that the beginning might be missing, as there are parallels in the second part: “Wither and decay” - “Heal what has been hurt” “End this destiny” - “Change the fates design” I think that’s why she wasn’t completely possessed and didn’t actually kill them all, because the incantation wasn’t complete. And honestly, the music is amazing! Congrats for Disney! It feels so much more powerful than the healing incantation, and it's so creepy it gave me goosebumps...

I don't watch this series myself so take my opinion with a grain of salt. While I love the way the Moondrop incantation sounds and adore the scene where its learned, it feels sort of shallow that the Moondrop is just unarguably evil. I really liked your earlier theory talking about how darkness is the natural inverse of light and not necessarily evil, and it seems like the show had a really good set up to make that point, but then cheaped out and went the evil edgy death route. TLDR; love the aesthetic, hate the generic evilness when there was a great opportunity for something else
