It wasn't tedious, the pointsman was new to the job, so she was fumbling in the coupler attachment. The process is very basic: 1. Lift the locking pin 2. Open up and align the coupler knuckles 3. Back into the open coupler till the coupler folds itself into the opposite knuckle and the pin locks into place. 4. Check that the pin dropped into place properly 5. Connect the hoses for the air brakes In fact, screw couplers are a much worse torture for the pointsman in comparison to CBC couplers. They have to do up the screw assembly in addition to the air hoses.

Nah, the pointsman was new to the job. You could clearly see she was struggling to understand how to fix the air brakes and to open and align the couplers to attach. These type of jobs are taught directly on the field, as the couplers are robust enough to withstand a few bashes, and it is not a theoretical job. You could see an experienced pointsman do the same job in less than 5 min, as they have the work experience to put the couplers together.
