3:10 Copy for Study other Artists is an interesting Topic. I stopped using References Years ago as i mostly painted with Oils,because everyone around me always asked if i used one,and i mostly didnt except for little Details.So i got the Impression that its a bad thing. But its like Ed says,its basicly how we all start,as a Kid i always drew Batman,Spiderman and so on,mostly bought Comics just for the Great Pictures.And i think this gave a an intuitive Feeling for how to do certain Things. i also found back to it few Weeks ago as i discovered the Term Master Studies. Im a Book Illustrator,but also doing Covers for Music Albums and mainly work with Inks.All my own Stuff,but now i enjoy doing a little Frazetta or Wrightson Ink Study from Time to time,its a bit like coming back to my Childhood,but with learning Effect. I always watch your Vids in Background while working and rarely comment,but i had to stop by for this.Great Channel Guys !

Watching videos like this show me what students of the art and craft of comics you guys are. Being able to see snippets of a panel from an artist and generally know who it might be, or the era it's at least from never ceases to boggle my mind. I generally come away from these vids with names of artists to look into to broaden my own horizons, if for nothing else than inspiration of new elements to toy with in my own art.

The close up Caniff panels look a bit like Chester Gould villains from Dick Tracy...

The back pages of the Sketchbook, have an entire indicia of the Reference images. Though sometimes Burns admits, that he can't even remember the original Image Source.. I think the Caniff-looking stuff is actually: Bill Draut.. Burns has re-drawn a lot of Draut panels for his LOVE NEST book.

Great book! Burns definitely a master in the game. Chester Brown also messes around with old imagery from DC & Marvel in short stories and zines that he does - sometimes using the original text and other times twisting the text his own way. Worth checking out if you haven’t seen it.

Fuck I picked this up from my uni library, it was so cool to see Charles burns transform drawings in his style. The copy unfortunately had a bit of water damage but it was still an amazing look into his work
