The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

It always amazed me that Sullivan would put acts on his show that had no relevance to his own values and tastes. But he knew what was popular and what the audience wanted. He was the greatest showman since Ziegfeld.

Sullivan's ratings went sky high after he started having rock and roll acts on his show. While they may not have been his cup of tea I think he realized times and tastes were changing in the late 1950s and throughout the 60s. so he went along and had many acts on his show.

These guys are a great example of good old kick ass rock and roll. Back when people got on stage and played their instruments with feeling, that feeling went out into the audience. That's what's missing in a lot of current music.

# 1 Rare Earth fan here but there may be a few new kids on the block that still play arse kicking rock n roll. They’re not Rare Earth Style but still make me play them over and over and they are: Black Stone Cherry and Joyous Wolf doing a very impressive versions of Mountains Mississippi Queen. There might be some new light at the end of tunnel for old rockers like us. I always listen to bands incorporate their own versions of time less hits, most fail. These two bands are “ NO JOKE “ I’m 71 yrs old still playing guitar professionally, I’ve seen em all. These guys are great

What group is Peter playing with ? Is it a regular band or a Rare Earth type band ? A big thank you to anyone that can hopefully answer this question. As far as his voice is concerned it was the most powerful in his era and probably still today. No screeching, screaming or gimmicks, just pure, plain unadulterated rock n roll. A drummer that could belt it out and still keep perfect time. A rarity then and non-existant today.

I have seen Rare Earth at least 4 times in the early 70s. They were the opening act for most of the head-liners back in the day. However, they were just as bad ass. I used to play this song in my past cover bands over the years and its still a groovy song.

Saw them open for Sly and the Family Stone at Madison Square Garden. Of course, Sly was late so this opening band got to play over an hour instead of the usual 40 minutes. Of course, they could run “I’m Losing You” for 20+ minutes, which they did. Ditto for “Get Ready.”

Peter Rivera told me once that he was within seconds of missing His cue on Ed Sullivan to get on stage. He told me he was going to the bathroom when the stations were already pushing the risers out on stage for the performance. They were knocking on the bathroom door going “Peter, get the hell out there you’re supposed to be on stage now!” Riviera literally had to run across the ice and jump onto the riser before the song started. Sullivan's final season on the air. When rock and roll came along and he started having such acts on his shows in 1956 his ratings shot thru the roof. Lead singer Peter Rivera was recently on Mike Huckabee's show and his voice hasn't changed much in 53 years. A gift for sure. This is rock and roll how we remember it. The Color Barrier of acceptance on BOTH SIDES had their toes drawn in the sands and while the time winds have eroded SOME of that away, it will remain there forever. End of story. Sue me; I need the money in the countersuit.

Old school music is timeless, it never gets old , 100% pure talent. and quality, today’s musicians rely on technology auto tune. There is no talent here if you have to depend on auto tune,

Oh god, I thought we were going to get through the comments without the ever-tiresome reference to autotune. But you forgot to say that “today’s music is crap”!

The choreography is stunning and the costuming is Oscar-worthy. And, to put them on ice is pure genius! Hey Ed, how about just putting the performers out there and letting them do their thing. At least they didn't put one of those lava lamp kaleidoscope lenses on the camera -- that week, anyway.

I listened to this yesterday and wanted to know what they looked like. I had no idea the singer played drums and was white. Lol. They are awesome.

Temptations did this great. Rare Earth went above and beyond with it.
