Rare earth metals are the most important elements that most people have never heard of or even if they have heard of them, they know very little about them. Without these unusual metals - the rare earths, your life would be totally different - in our technology, we use them every day. Today we will talk about prospecting for Rare Earth deposits: the minerals, the geology, the mining and how the metals are extracted and purified. And why the whole world is slave to China to buy them.
For those who want to learn more about Prospecting and finding gold check out my book, Fists full of Gold. It’s an encyclopedia of everything on the topic of prospecting. It’s available on from High Plains Prospectors. (Affiliate) You can find it at:

Makes me wonder how many I actually have held or tried to hit a Lizard with (and missed) LOL i probably should just stick to gold and silver but platinum would be nice also. I always enjoy your content Chris and I'm glad to see you cover this topic. I collect the elements of the periodic table and I have all but three of the rare earth metals which I'll end up buying eventually. I've extracted and purified some of the rare earths on my own from old broken rare earth magnets, ferrocerium rods and a few other sources I'm saving up in storage into a hopefully economically viable volume to process eventually. It's a personal hobby, so it only needs to be economically viable one time really.

@@ChrisRalph REALLY! Dad was Superintendent up to mid '80's, Ray Gray. It wasn't operational a lot longer. (my handle here is joke name) He had fantastic career, started by taking ore samples in 1950's after brief stint in Butte Montana. Chief Engineer by time I can recall, masters in geology from Berkley. Finished by locating, drilling, developing and mining one particular large ore body, over many yrs and job titles. His proudest achievement. Also proud of the Easy Going Tunnel which he designed, and was ridiculed for "Gray's Ditch", the tunnel had a DRY ditch for about 2/3's the way, making the project bigger and harder, then they hit water and it filled up all within few hundred ft out of 3 miles. He calculated the ditch capacity based on averaging flow rates per distance in multiple established tunnels. That ditch was *barely big enough in the end* , always maxed out. :D

@@ChrisRalph Back in Cold War days, we didn't know exactly what Russia and China had, but Pine Crk was biggest tungsten mine in "free world" for a long time. Had my own personal tours but was relegated to working in the mill only, given dad's rules on conflict of interest. Went to grade school with grandchildren of one of founders of the mine, Bauregaurd's (I can't spell crap), old man sold his interest for something like $35k, million todays money, and lost it all when the banks collapsed 1929. Later ran into them again as a contractor at their small mine 'behind', South of Mammoth Mt., funded by McCoy who had some sort of long history, loyalty with the family. And at a bar one memorable occasion in Bishop, HA! (they started a big brawl, about a dozen involved, one busted a Bud bottle on another's head, he was wild back in 2nd grade too, 5 redhead brothers plus their bro in law against "the Indians", I guess, (sheesh) no one even got tossed out of the establishment for it, I only got involved to guard one on MY SIDE who was on his back on the floor already, damage control, those were the days...)

This video just came up tonight so my comment is late, but, I think it's important for prospectors to know about the hazards that can accompany working with certain minerals and elements. I worked with beryllium 50+ years ago, there wasn't as much knowledge about it back then. In the last few years I've dealt with the after effects, but consider myself fortunate compared to some of my coworkers. Do your homework before you start prospecting, the life you save might be your own.

I'm guessing You were not mining Beryllium ores and minerals but working with fabricating Beryllium metal alloys?
@jeffreywhitmoyer860
@jeffreywhitmoyer860 Год назад
@@ChrisRalphNo, I worked with Beryllium Copper alloys and powder metals. It's safe enough when in combination with other materials, but when it's released into the atmosphere as pure beryllium it becomes dangerous, inhalation and skin contact both cause problems. Back then they didn't know about skin contact which is only an issue for people with sensitivity (about 2-3% of us).

@ChrisRalph
@ChrisRalph Год назад
IT depends on a lot more factors than just ppm. The size of the ore body is also critical. It could be 500,000 ppm (50% RE) and not economic if its not large enough. Mining a few hundred tons is not worth it. It needs to be large enough to set up a milling and refining plant.

Orange stained rocks everywhere, worse since the mine shaft blow out after that earthquake (I suspect) damaged some shafts in the worlds wettest coal seam few years ago. Was very loud, fault lines near me. Was also very loud couple of months back when our street turned orange thanks to our new geyser from all those shafts. We live on the Neath disturbance apparently, in UK info is very censored and local governments concerned that educated public might be thieves, even though its all perfectly legal with no protected sights. The changing geology between Drummau mountain and the Neath valley in a short distance is shocking every 100 yards or so. It seems I might be living in a very interesting geological location, what's the most valuable substances I aught to be looking out for in your opinion? We have many coal tips, slag piles....also orange, red and purple staining in many rivers. Big glaciers in the past and huge tectonic pressure creating our huge coal field endless valleys and a couple of tectonic boundaries and thrust faults. I thought this might be an excellent new hobby for stimulation and exorcise for our whole family, but I was hoping you might be able to tell me some good tips to make day trips worth while :)

@@ChrisRalph that's ok, I was after a shortcut because I was a bit exited to re-start an old hobby of mine. Studied science before and I should know better than to only seek the information that gives the right answers. Been watching your vids and learned so much. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with the rest of the world. Have been digging out my old geology books, buying some new ones with a test kit like you said. I think my back has had enough of the samples I keep bringing home, same goes for my husband. But I will have plenty of time through this rainy week to study them and learn all I can :) thanks again x

Thanks a good overview. Essentially rare earths are not that rare but viable mines/sources are rare... outside of China which does not care about the degradation of the environment or health of its people and pays them peanuts. However the west is going to have to step up and start mining them properly - USA, Canada, Australia in particular.

@epincion
@epincion 10 месяцев назад
@@ChrisRalph Under current political and economic conditions yes, but the west has woken up to the way China is using its dominance of a vital resource as a weapon for its strategic aims (and much of the rest of its trade as well) and I sense a realisation n the west that like it or not we are in a long term struggle to resist China's plan to be the new world's only superpower and as such sourcing, mining, processing and reprocessing rare earth metals in the west have to be a protected priority.
