Another great video honoring our fallen heroes. Today's ultra soft culture cannot even fathom how brave the men on both sides were.

I doubt many people could carry a musket and their other gear, and march some 20 miles in a day in hard uncomfortable leather footwear (or none as many Confederates) in hot/cold weather, wearing itchy clothing, living on thin rations and dirty water.

Yes I agree with you a hundred percent. I served in the Army medical corps from 1990 to 96 and people in our culture have gotten soft even since then. My dad fought in the Second World War and I'm thankful that he's not around to see what has become of the country his generation fought to save.@@footfiles

We never celebrated Decoration Day. We always honored our Southern Ancestors. My gg grandfather was captured near Macon, Georgia by the invaders from the north, Sherman's forces. He went home on parole back to Tennessee. I got back home from the Republic of South Vietnam in May of 1969. A bunch of USA government criminals ran that conflict.

My 3rd great grandfather Leander Jackson Pace (1816-1893) was a major in the Henderson county militia (Company G) under the 35th regiment of North Carolina. His company saw battle in a good amount of places including New Bern, Seven Days Battles, Malvern Hill, Harper's Ferry and Antietam. If I'm correct he was then discharged because of his age (which being over 40) allowed him to leave the army. Before the war between the states Leander served as a first Sergeant of the third regiment under Captain Marcus Dickerson which helped rally up natives to be moved in the trail of tears but would never march with the Indians. After his military career Leander would become a local postmaster in which he would serve until he died in the year 1893 at age 76. Two of Leander's sons served in the civil war notably Judge Columbus Mills Pace (1845-1925) who after his service became the longest serving clerk of the court in North Carolina state history serving for a whopping 57 years until his death at age 79. If you were interested my 2nd great grandfather Richard Jackson Pace (1857-1939) was born too late to serve in the war. Even though I do not agree nor support the cause some of my ancestors fought for; I will not ignore nor deny their importance in the evolution and greatness of this nation! I saw other people posting about their ancestors who fought in the civil war so I thought this would be a cool place to share one of my ancestors who fought in our nations bloodiest conflict.

How cool, a WNC soldier! I’m just over the hill from Hendersonville, on the Tennessee side. Rugged country round those parts. Wild to think what those fellers went through back then, and to think of a mountain boy from round these parts ending up in Antietam fighting back then. What he must have thought and the stories he must have told back in Henderson county! Thanks for sharing some of his story!

The footage with the audio at the end was in 1932. The man speaking was in General Logan's Corps. That group was a group of Union veterans. However, I believe much of this footage was filmed at Gettysburg in 1932 which would have probably been on of the last gatherings of Civil War veterans from both sides. The footage at the beginning of the clip appears to be older (early 1920s??) and from a confederate cemetary.
@BirdDogg
@BirdDogg 2 месяца назад
Indeed, the footage in the beginning I believe to be from and early confederate decoration day(in the 20s???..) The latter portion is from a national Memorial Day celebration I believe, with both sides present.

His Babson line father (b1880) was Spanish American War and GF of wrong age (b1854) to have had to have been allowed joined CSA. Dad was too young tobhave been in WWII, served as Sargeant and kicked out when home so it says, Private. I read, so can see how it was clearly not just our Vietnam War veterans who were mistreated when wars were over.

The gentleman said 62 years ago his commanding officer said to recognize may 30th for the soldiers that fought in the civil war. 62 years from 1865 would be 1927. The young lady putting the wreath on the headstone had typical flapper clothes on. So I believe this footage was approximately 1927-28.

This is a badly colorized video, but many of these uniforms (not including suits) are obviously not light grey. Is this not a joint Memorial Day celebration? I know they had them, when veterans from The War were still alive. Imagine if we could get along as well as people who actually fought against one another.
@BirdDogg

With 14-15,000 frames for an 8 minute video it’s a challenge, the colors are kinda subjective I reckon, this was a mix of confederate Memorial Day services and union ones, not a joint celebration.

@@arthurbachmann4221 Ehh, I’ll take documentation over opinion most days. This was shot in 1914, average age of soldiers was say 18 in 1861(many were younger, many older, but let’s take that as an average.) So using that, we end up with 53 years between the war beginning and when this was shot. 53 plus 18 puts us at 71 years old as what the average age would have been of these veterans…. I mean, I don’t see many that look much less than that. I’m almost 50.
