Rare Heritage Pig Breeds

January 19, 2017 - Little Buddy, my sister, and I visit a farmer who is raising rare (and even an extinct - yes really) heritage pigs - Mangalista pigs
Senna Gray pigs
Red Wattle pigs
Swabian Hall pigs
Hairy Hampshire
After leaving the farm, the farmer sent me a message saying they changed their minds about wanting to be on RU-vid. I edited the video to remove all references to names, locations, and censored the farmer's face in order to respect their wishes. The flow of the video isn't a smooth because of these changes but the content is still informative and interesting.

Here in Germany Magalitzas are not that uncommon among homesteaders and small farmers. We used to have two Magalitza x Turopolje sows. Magalitzas and Turopolje are similar, hairy heritage breeds. Just as Bob said, they're great on pasture and very hardy, so they used to stay outside all year (with an open shelter of course), and we have very snowy and cold winters where I live. To anyone interested in this breed: the meat is VERY different from what most people are used to in pork. Here they're also called "Speck-Schwein" (=Bacon Pig) because their meat is very fat. Now, in the olden days, that was needed to get the calories in during winter. That's also why they are no longer widely used, most people want lean meat. But the meat is exceptionally tasty and I've heard that the fat is somehow healthier - probably along the lines of your "grain fed homestead video (have no data on it though, sorry). Another thing to consider, is that these pigs have relatively small litter sizes - at least compared to more commercial breeds. Ours usually had 4-6 piglets each. "Normal" pigs will have twice that. And they take longer to grow. So, less piglets, longer growth and less weight than conventional breeds. So when marketing, you should always sell it as a speciality. It took us a while to get the marketing right, because people at first were put off by the high fat content. After tasting the meat, almost all of our customers would become regulars and pre-order almost a year in advance :) Just some more inside information if anyone is interested :) Greetings from Germany

Loved the interview, what a great farmer!! Loved how he's using the deep litter method for farrowing, and it was interesting to hear about these 'new for me' rare, heritage breeds. I'm happy that you found a respectful method to share the information with us that the farmer was happy with. Tell him thanks for us. :)

That's awesome! We're starting with American Guinea Hogs due to size and that they graze like ruminants (don't need grain). What are you leaning toward?

We have Guinea Hogs and they are great pigs; you really can't go wrong with them and they are docile, which is key if you have kids or petite women looking after them. They can go in the pens without getting bit in half.

Dan, I'm loving these videos where you visit farms/homesteads and learn about these "homesteading breeds" of animals. Particularly this one as we just started homesteading last year and I'm going to be getting my first pigs this year. I also live in Iowa. :-) Keep this up!

The Grass-fed Homestead I'm thinking about Berkshire at this point. I've heard people say to not get too concerned with a particular breed the first year as long as it's not a confinement hog. I'll have to see what I can find here in a couple months.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
Berkshires are great! They will root if you don't keep them moving frequently (sometimes the rooting can be helpful - depends on the application) but they make great pork. We've been buying Berkshires the last couple of years for our pork and we are really happy with the quality.

You did a great job with the video! And your barns...man! They are awesome! Thank you for the video topic idea. That would be an interesting comparison. I'll see what I can put together. I have a short answer regarding the milk/meat sheep - my sheep breeder breeds Friesian (dairy sheep) into her Katahdin (meat) lines to boost milk production in the katahdin. I also know another shepherdess that is milking katahdins for a dairy/soap operation. But I know she has been breeding for milk production for a while to get to this point.

The Grass-fed Homestead Thanks Dan! We got really lucky finding a place with such great barns. I'll be excited to see what you come up with if you decide to do that video idea. Thanks for the short answer on the sheep breeds too!

I liked hearing about the deep litter method & it totally makes sense. I've watched alot of videos on growing pigs on pasture & how they like to keep their sleeping areas clean...made me appreciate them more! Loved the curly coats & really enjoy seeing the movement on trying to preserve heritage breeds of all kinds of livestock. Thanks for the great editing and you can always just show the livestock & farm while people are talking...not an issue for me to see faces. :)

That deep litter method may work with small 250 to 350 lb sows but when the sows grow to 450 lb to 600 lb and fall over on the pigs he will find he looses too many to smothering and crushing. I always found I needed to keep my sows until the size of her litters got below 8 pigs born alive. Once sows got to the larger sizes it stressed them to learn the farrowing crates so for me it was easier to start out using them even though they do make for a lot more work on the caretaker. You have to water and feed each sow and clean out her crate and that is a lot of work. But every live pig you can raise is money. Hope this helps new raisers but HEY, whatever works for you!

As a Hungarian it is funy to hear and see how American farmers/breader call the magalica mangalista or mangalitsa. I know hungarian is one of the hardest language to learn and pronounce. That video is so cool! I don't know much about pigs, but my husband (a chef) just got a red wattle hog that he split (1/2 for home and 1/2 for the restaurant) and I'm hoping that he can get some footage of the sausage making and curing. He took a bunch of pics of the cuts and the marbling was amazing! If this farmer says that the red wattle chops aren't as good, I'm going to have to have him get a Mangalista next (I know there's a farm nearby that has them). The chop I had was amazing!

great video, however a slight disagreement about "deep litter" comment. when you have a sow that's only 300 lbs, crushing isn't a problem regardless of bedding. when you have a 2 yr old landrace that weighs 5-6 hundred lbs, no piglet is gonna crawl out of that suffocating mass. I still don't use crates, just giving you more information

Isn't it funny how many of us suburban, young, but not too young, guys get a few years into the rat race and decide that there must be something better. I moved out (not as far as you) and got into permaculture and we also now homeschool.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
Awesome! Are you homesteading too?
@RandyKleinman
@RandyKleinman 7 лет назад
Yes, we just bought 14 acres in October. Our previous garden, orchard, and chicken habitat was growing too large for our neighbors and wasn't big enough for us. I work from home as a software engineer and so we are afforded geographic freedom like you guys. Got any recommendations for permaculture books/training?
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
Almost all of my book are in storage so I'm going off the top of my head here: Restoration Agriculture (Mark Shepherd), Gaia's Garden (Toby Hemenway), Nourishing Homestead (Ben Hewitt), The Resilient Homestead (Ben Falk), The Holistic Orchard (Michael Phillips), Paradise Lot (Eric Toensmeier), Dairy Farming: The Beautiful Way (Adam Klaus), Salad Bar Beef/You Can Farm and all the others by Joel Salatin, The Small-Scale Poultry Flock (Harvey Ussery)... I know I'm missing several. As for training, I know Geoff Lawton just launched another PDC. I don't know if registration has closed or not. I took his class in 2013 and it was really good. This new one is supposed to be significantly better.
@RandyKleinman
@RandyKleinman 7 лет назад
I have read several of those and have been partial to Ben Falk because his climate is essentially identical to mine here in Minnesota. I have been a little surprised at how many permaculture books speak at such a high level and I have struggled to find more detailed information. I just got Gaia's Garden from the library and it had more encyclopedic-style information which I am excited about. I have Peter Bane's book coming from Amazon pretty soon too. I am glad to hear that you liked Lawton's course. Did you find if it was difficult to translate what you learned in the PDC due to difference in climate from Australia to Idaho? I have a friend that took Lawton's last online course and recommended against taking it for this reason. Just wondering if you had thoughts on this.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
He doesn't just focus on the tropics. There are sections on other climates but those parts of the PDC weren't the big takeaway for me. The bigs things were the change in the way I look at things...thinking in whole systems, pattern recognition and the like. For me, I knew almost nothing about permaculture when I took the course so all of it was so earth-shattering. I first heard of permaculture a few weeks before Geoff launched the course in 2013. I read Mollison's Intro to Permaculture (good book) and then I took the PDC. Anyway, I came away with better understanding the principles and understanding the basics of main-frame design.

The animals are so sweet, just hate that the reason is for breeding them is to eat them. The baby piggies are soooo cute, how precious!
