A recording of Jack and the gang rehearsing for "Bob Hope and Jack Double Date," which was broadcast on April 17, 1955. It is uncut and you can hear all the breaks in between. At around 17-18:00, Bob tells Jack after a line that he'd like to have a good line following. In the real broadcast, however, Bob seems to have ad-libbed some lines in that space (I can't really tell, because Bob could make Jack crack up all the time). The episode included Jack Benny, Rochester, Mel Blanc (Prof. LeBlanc, Polly, cow/zebra), and Bob Hope (guest star). The actual show can be found at www.otr.net/?p=... (it's the 606th episode; just look at the numbers on the left column). In the rehearsal, the epilogue is Jack telling everyone (as usual :D) to watch his TV show later that night (Sunday nights at 7 pm!), but in the actual show Jack did his "I was going to tell you about my TV show, but we're running a little late, so watch it and good night!"
Thanks for watching!

Also, by this time, Mary Livingston never appeared live due to stage fright. Jack and Mary's daughter Joan would attend the live rehearsal and taping and later Mary's recorded lines were added.

Most of the time, Jack's script secretary (and part-time "bit player"), Jeanette Eymann, would read her lines during the taping.

This must have been one of his last radio programs.

Wow, I didn't know that they did a teleplay of the "Anaheim, Azusa and Cucamonga" radio show! I'd love to see that!

Whenever Bob appeared on Jack's radio and TV shows, he NEVER stuck to the script- always had something in reserve to ad-lib. At the end of the "Road To Nairobi" TV episode in May 1954, Jack confided to his audience that, even though they'd had two rehearsals, "Hope changed every other line!". Jack's radio show was on Sundays at 7pm(et): his bi-weekly TV show appeared at 7:30pm [how could he do both IF he was on radio and TV at the same time?].

As was the custom, this initial rehearsal was taped without a live audience or Mahlon Merrick's studio orchestra in attendance. Later, a full "dress rehearsal" with an audience was staged, then the final version was recorded. Joseph Kearns is the "Milkman"...incidentally, the TV episode airing that night was a live "Preparing For New York Trip" story, with Jack going to the train station, and meeting the "crying cab driver" {Mel, also the "P.A. announcer"} and "The Tout" [Sheldon Leonard].

@fromthesidelines Cool info. Never realized the dress rehearsals had audiences as well.

@krledu Yes, I'm a member of the IJBFC which runs the site you mentioned. If you could email me at "jenny@lijenny.co.cc" I would be glad to give you a copy of this file (I think I might have the audio file stuffed into a jump drive somewhere...)

Its weird not having the usual roars of laughter from the audience

@krledu I got it from a friend who collects OTR memorabilia. It's cool to hear the gang rehearsing and then listening to the actual broadcast. :)

Are there more rehearsals out there?

Who played Gertrude in this rehearsal? She sounds kind of flat.

Jack's daughter Joan. You can always spot her monotonous "performance". At the end you can hear someone ask Mel Blanc if he heard from Bea Bernadette, who usually plays Gertrude Gearshift.

Two brilliant comedians, both at or near their peak. *This* is entertainment. Marred only slightly by them not going 'all-out' for the audience.

I'd like to see the "live" version, too. But it isn't in circulation...although the 1958 filmed version of the episode is.
