Had a truck compliance officer pull me over a couple of years back when I had’ Highway Patrol’ playing on CD. Replayed it for him and he loved it so much he let me go without an inspection.
...that worked like the 'ol Bible up on the dashboard thing used to.... LOL ! Agree 100%, Highway Patrol is a one of a kind song - - nobody out there has Anything that fits in that slot, it *Stands Alone* !
Saw Junior about 20 years ago in Jacksonville FL and its still the loudest show I've ever been to. Super underrated and a genuinely swell guy to be around.
Junior isn't underrated at all. He's regarded as one of the greatest guitar players in the world. You either know who he is or you don't. Nobody that knows about Junior would ever say "Ehh, he's okay".
Where in the hell do come up with "underrated"??? Any person with good taste and knowledge of guitar knows better. Is he not FM radio rotation or his music should be piped in to all buildings??? Oh, they are awesome people, I did not know they were your personal friends. He said "Chink" so he is a racist? Well "chink" is the stuff between logs in a cabin or knee length chaps.
Junior was a professor of Country Music in Oklahoma, invented the Gitsteel (electric and steel guitars combined) and is one of the best guitar players in the world. A Legend! 🎸
Junior met Tanya Rae when she was a student in one of his classes. As Junior once said in an interview, "She got different homework assignments than the other students."
One time...and to this day, one of the best shows I've ever seen. In the ballroom of the mansion of the guy from Newport KY who invented the Tommy Gun. Because of course you would see a guy like this in a place like that.
I saw him, hung out a bit, he signed my shirt♥️ Absolutely Amazing on stage!!! The more we screamed the harder he played!!I’ve never seen or ever will see anything that can compare to him playing that GuitSteel 😁♥️
@@rhondaharden4779 His live concerts bring that out, full grown adults, almost acting like they are at a Beatles concert in 1964. I saw that crowd reaction here in St. Louis also. Infinity, and beyond!
Years ago, my wife dragged me to a Blake Shelton/Toby Keith concert... to my delight Jr Brown opened unannounced for both the headliners... Junior was the best artist on stage that night and blew away Shelton and Keith.
How do you become a legend? You invent an instrument nobody else's playing, and you get as good at it as others are on the conventional instruments. This guy is amazing.
i first saw Junior on CMT videos 30 yrs ago. i have been a die-hard fan ever since. i carried my Junior Brown cd's with me everywhere and i played them at every job i had. Mr. Brown has a lot more fans due to me.
Junior Brown is amazingly good! I love all his songs and his style from the past. His wife Tanya is not only a strong asset to the band on rhythm guitar and vocal, but is also very easy on the eyes...what a beautiful woman!
@Kurt Sloop I have been a country music fan since being introduced to the real country of Waylon Willie, Billie Joe Shaver, Don Williams, Guy Clark, back in the 70's. I cannot believe this is the first I've heard of Junior!! I now have to make up for a lot of good music I've been deprived of. Thank you RU-vid algorithms
Early 1990’s they played Junior Brown on the local oldies station. I wasn’t really allowed to listen to modern music so I fell in love with old music 1st and only found modern music because friends listened to it.
I lived in Travis Heights in the 80s when Continental Club opened, in the 90s I was one of those 10 that come in to hear Junior Brown. Heard a lot of greats at that club, both true Austin treasures…
I might have been there with you. I recall being at the Continental Club on South Congress. The other 9 people were guitar players trying to figure out how he was doing what he was doing.
I love Juniors music. I've been listening to him since 1990! He truly does have a great sound. It sounds classic county with a tint of true rock in roll. Keep on Rocking Junior your the best
This song will be played at my Wake. I was a State Trooper in the 90’/20’s, b4 I went Federal. Working for the State Highway Patrol is without a doubt, the Best, Hardest and most Fun job I’ve ever had! Thank you Junior, The former 1150-HP in Missouri 🚓.
I retired from a life of OTR about two years ago. This guy used to keep me going at 3 am! Now me and my dog can listen to his tunes on my front porch on a Sunday morning! Thanks Jr! CYA. Down the road!
What a great talent Junior is and his wife also, We need someone to carry the torch for the great old style country music and Junior does that very well.
What a unique and great talent he is. Excellent musician and great baritone voice. He's mostly gone unappreciated. What a great couple they are too. You can see the love and respect.
I’d say the world needs Junior Brown’s music, period. May not suit everyone, but to anyone that gives it a chance, his artistry is worth their time. I think of him more as Rockabilly, though he plays mean blues and some great swinging jazz too. He and the band are great.
They're out there............let's hope more of them become a little more successful........ sometimes we (music conasures...lol) need to look for and, spread the word, to help'em out. 🍻✌️
I first saw junior brown in 1993 on cmt singing highway patrol. i was 12 at the time and my cousin and i thought it was the funniest song ever. we would walk around singing it all the time. man i miss those days.
I have almost totally quit listening to what is called country music. Thankfully Junior Brown is still around playing the music I grew up listening to as a kid.
I’m a bit of a metalhead, but I appreciate music in any form. A good buddy of mine introduced me to Junior here about a month back and I’ve been playing a lot of him ever since. you just gotta stand in awe of him and his picking. He makes it look easy and you gotta admit he’s having a lot of fun doing it.
Met Junior through his good friend Mercury Charlie... worked on a couple of cars for him and he is one heckuva nice guy. Absolutely phenomenal talent with his music.... this vid barely touches the surface of his wit and skill on the guit-steel.
This is what country music should be! The first time I heard Junior was the song my wife thinks you're dead. I thought I was listening to an new Ernest Tubb song! Knew that couldn't be so l looked up who was singing and also found many of his other songs which have provided many hours of happy listening. Keep on doing what you're doing! I love Ernest Tubb's music and I love your music every bit as much!
I’ve had the pleasure to see Junior Brown in concert many times, including at the Continental Club during a visit to Austin. His live shows are excellent and I enjoy his music.
I saw Junior Brown at Ram's Head Annapolis ~15 years ago, sitting no more than 10 feet from him. I was mesmerized! He was absolutely amazing!! Only had bass & drums, and the drummer only had a kick, snare, & cymbal, as I recall, and the dude took a solo that sounded like 2 drummers at once!
Love it, believe it or not I yelled bingo when his club owner buddy mentioned how people not into country get hooked on Junior. Just one month ago I found him on Pandora via "Chester & Lester" feeding into one of his hits. Wow instant fan. I can't figure out how I totally missed knowing of him till now...geez I even spent 15 years in the music biz as a live sound engineer mixing Rock, New Wave and Chicago style R&B ! Now Im going through his library on Pandora. Lovin' it.
I was in law enforcement when "Highway Patrol" came out. We'd have to both respond to and occasionally just drop in for a walk through of local bars, and one DJ at one bar used to also be a cop. Ol' Bonnie, God rest her soul, used to have that song cued all the time and that would start before the door closed behind us. That was always very cool.
I'm a metalhead but my buddy dragged me to see Junior at a small club in Chapel Hill, NC about 20 yrs ago or so. He blew the roof off the place and kicked my ass all over it! I'm still a metal guy but Junior has a place on my playlist and he gets turned up a little louder when he comes on.
I used to bodyguard Junior Brown at 3 tear drops off of the industrial boulevard in Dallas Texas it was a nightclub and he is a real nice man and one heck of a singer and musician I had the privilege to carry his guitsteel and that thing is heavy
Not a big country fan, but I know talent when I hear it. Was lucky to see him live at Cat's Cradle, a small venue in Carrboro, NC. It was just him and a drummer whose complete drum kit was a snare and a high-hat. Hahahaha
I first heard Junior Brown several years ago at the Doheny Blues Festival in Dana Point. I don’t think any of the crowd was expecting this. It was a blues festival, after all. The crowd loved him, and I went out the next day and bought four of his albums. A wonderful entertainer and a superior musician!
This man and his wife and band are amazing. Way better if you are there for the concert. I saw them in St. Louis at Old Rock House, it was beyond sick, It is not mostly country. He plays about equal amounts of the main guitar styles, and mixes it all in, sometimes even in the same song! The drummer made more drum sound with one drum and a cymbal, than a lot of drummers do with 20 drums. Tanya could teach a clock how to stay in time.
I have had the opportunity to see Jr Brown literally hundreds of shows at The Continental Club. I would say that Jr Brown is the most talented Guitarist that is alive today.
Even us east coast college educated liberal elites love junior brown. Well I never went to college and worked in factories all my life but we got country folks here to. Check out marty Stewart and the fabulous superlatives for more keepers of the traditional country flame with a touch of rockabilly.
Saw him while living in New Orleans as a birthday gift in 1997. He was on the bill with Keb Mo. Two of my favorites under the same roof. It was perfection. Best birthday ever. Seeing him made me so homesick I moved back to Texas shortly after that. One of the most surprising and unexpected moments was seeing him in a role on The X Files. He was fantastic!!
When my boys were teens and fighting on a long drive I played my Jr Brown tape, which they hated because it was "cornball country". Punishment for them... I'd rewind "Highway Patrol" again and again, marvel at the guitar solo, sing along in my bass voice, "Justa doin my job... on the highway patrol." Good times!
Thanks for posting this excellent interview. My wife and I were fortunate to first see Junior and Ms. Tanya play at a neighborhood bar here in Austin, about 1990. I had never heard of him and only went to meet a friend for a couple pitchers of beer and some free music. Boy was I in for a treat -- one of the best music performances I've seen -- and I've seen many. There probably weren't more than 30 people in the place -- but they were all going nuts by the end of the first song.
I once opened for Junior and got to meet him. The club manager said that he'd never seen him get off his bus to check out the opening act. I was proud of that.
Saw Junior Brown in NYC years ago at a place called Tramps...it was a snow storm night as well, but made the show with my date...we got to meet him back in his dressing room with his wife Tanya after the show...just sat talking like we were old friends...thanks Junior for your time and respect.
Wow !!! Thanks for posting this - I love Junior Brown. I’m very eclectic in my music tastes (everything from Gregorian Chant to modern Hip-Hop!!), but have always had a weakness for great guitar playing. First heard his “Surf Medley” on an internet surf music playlist and chased it down. Been hooked ever since. Great to see this video about him !!
One of those people that’s so musically talented that they can embellish their musical performance with theatrics and humor. The master of such craft possibly being Roy Clark. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
First time i saw Jr Brown was on Austin City Limits many years ago. I had never heard of him at the time. It blew me away and have been a big fan ever since.
Damn Straight or as I call it “Pop music with Steel Guitars” Sucks anyway you Look at it Try these Cats “ Hillbilly Moon Explosion” Start with Brown Eyed Boy then My Love Forever More and the Wize Guyz “Try Do it Slow” and if you Love Pycho Billy Surf Guitar you HAVE TO Cheque out Messer Chups Try “Call me Zombie “
In the summer of 2000, Junior Brown played in Morgantown, WV at 123 Pleasant St., and my friend and I went to see him - on rumors alone. The band started playing "Yakety Axe (or Yakety Sax), and segued into "Broke Down South of Dallas," and my jaw dropped. I mouthed "goddamn," and it was him influencing me from then on out.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful music 🎶 and your great song's are my favorites thanks for the great song's still playing these awesome song's in 2024
Been to some great concerts over the last 50 years but I never had more fun at any of them than watching Junior Brown....the guy knows how to put out the happy....
Junior is a great talent. I'm sure he is flattered by the commenters getting upset because someone called him underrated. Junior isn't exactly blowing the country music world up. He actually is over looked too many times. Hang in there Junior.
Junior's music reminds me of a time when I played in a rock band in the 60's. We some how got booked at a club out in the country and I knew when we drove up we did not belong here. We walked in and I saw about four men sitting at the bar with trucker caps, white t-shirts,black shoes with white soxs and the song "My red neck, white soxs and blue ribbon beer was playing on the juke box. I knew this was going to be a long night! Love Juniors music though !!!!!!
I've had similar situations. Walk in like you said. hard core country playing. What are we doing here. But at times they turned out to be the best gigs we ever had. We learned not to judge to harshly
He is what I would call an unknown legend. He has played with so many if the greats, and is the guy that the greats listen to. Like John Hiatt, the songwriters song writer.
I remember seeing Junior Brown play the three teardrops in Dallas way back in 94-ish. Not a lot of folks there but yeah, we were all guitarists or musicians of some variety.
Your the best junior!!!! Please play in northeast Pennsylvania again!! Like come here 5 times a week!!!! Lol I could never ever get sick of Junior Brown I own all of his records I wish he'd make more!!! I love this guy he is a true gentleman I've met him & he was kind enough to take a picture with me and give me his autograph!!! I love junior brown and his original songs but I have to admit I love when he plays a cover song also! Junior is the real deal people! True country!! long live the Browns!!!!!!! Junior Brown an American original!! What an understatement Junior Brown is a phenomenon and a living legend!!!!!
