I bought one new in 1966, in .30 carbine. It was my first useable centerfire rifle (first rifle was a Swiss 1911 Karbine, for which ammo did not exist at the time). For years it was my do everything rifle, from ground hogs to deer. At the time I debated between the .30 carbine and .256, and am glad I went with the .30 carbine. Ammo has remained plentiful and for my dense 2nd growth woods it is more than enough rifle. Despite its fairly heavy usage in my teens and early twenties, it looks like it did when it came from the factory. I have no idea how much it is or is not worth and couldn't care less. My son and granddaughter are both standing in line to get it when I leave planet earth.

An old gentleman in our sportsman club had one in 30 at the range one day. He allowed me to shoot it in exchange to shoot what I brought. Action wasnt bad but the trigger was clean and crisp. Thank you for sharing.

Thats awesome man! Yea the trigger is much better than I remember it being. Totally not used to that short action stroke though.

That had to be one of those fantastic old rifles that did not catch on to the buying public. It would be hard to beat as a mid range small game and varmit cartridge with the right bullet. Whatever the old lever action 218 bee and 25-20 could do , the 256 Winchester could do better. Acurracy potential would be awesome. If I were a billionaire, I would manufacture old rifle designs like the 62 and a few other oldies but goodies.

My dad had one that I now own and its in .256 as well. Neat rifle and fun to shoot.

I bought the 30 carbine version a few years ago and i wish i would have bought more magazines. They are so expensive now.

That's a cool history piece. I tried looking up .256 ammo and only found one place selling it for over two dollars a round. I did see resizing dies that would neck down .357 brass to the right size like you mentioned, so as long as the bullets are still made an experienced reloader can likely make these cartridges still.

Yeah man that caliber never took off unfortunately but I definitely did some hunting with it when I was young.

@@leverBoyluke you probably gonna laugh but as far as i could dig up, 16 gauge was quite popular in Europe, and even today is quite common to be found in stores, especially with single shot or double barrel shotguns or combined guns (like a double barrel shotgun with third barrel for hunting rifle round), but yeah, 12 gauge, 20 gauge and .410 kinda pushed it off as well even in old world

I own one and about 70 rounds of western super x 60 GR ammo, I’ve shot it a few times.

@@leverBoyluke I tried selling it once because I’m mainly into military surplus. But it just sits in the case. But it is fun to shoot., that 256 round is neat. Took it squirrel hunting one time.

Wow, a .256 WM... holy shit, I do believe the round is gonna be more rare than the gun friend. And if you do find some ammo, it might cost as much as the gun, just wow.

256 win mag has been out of production for many years. I have several in 22lr, 22mag, and 1 in 30 carbine.

I own a ferret it is 256 win mag i also have 12 full boxes of 50 round ammo i have been trying to sell some of the ammo i never shoot it anymore i would love to find out more about the gun also if anyone knows anything about the ferret 256 let me know thanks for the video
