That was a great line but here is my favorite: "I'm so fast, I can turn out the light in my room and get into bed before the room gets dark!" - Muhammad Ali
Saw a interview with Ali and Frazier that was many years after their last fight and Ali said that in every fight he had be brought out the best in whoever he was fighting, but whenever he fought Frazier, Frazier brought out the best in him. Respect to them both.
Yep well that's absolutely the truth there would be no Longwood Ali wouldn't even be in the running for the greatest if it wasn't for the 1st and 3rd fight with Joe Frazier. Ali dirtied up the second fight with all the holding the illegal holding behind the head he did so that still turned out to be a decent fight but not anything like the fight of the century and not anything like the Thrilla in Manila. 8oz gloves 111 degrees plus the humidity 30,000 people in the Philippines most most of which chain smokes cigarettes just imagine fighting in an environment like that going 15 rounds so many back and forth so many switches and momentum I don't know how Muhammad Ali was not bleeding internally with this body shots chose Landing not that he didn't land his share to the jaw as well but I mean Joe Frazier completely dominated the first fight for the most part even though you know Muhammad Ali did have his brief moments and he had a. Of three rounds where he dominated the fight but he couldn't hurt Frazier he certainly swelled as face up but anyway that's just the fight of the century The Thrilla in Manila was it a whole different ball game I don't know how either one lasted as long as they did. Ali had asked to quit and have his gloves cut off at the end of the 14th he felt like he was going to die but Eddie futch having a blind Fighter for all for the most part had already decided to call to fight. So when Muhammad Ali's Corner completely ignore his request that they cut off his gloves he was informed that Frazier would not be fighting 15s rounds and if they're standing up and barely raising one arm because he was so exhausted he completely collapsed. Similar to the fight of the century where I didn't agree with any of the scores I mean I think it's obvious 9rounds the six for Frazier. I mean that's not to take away from Muhammad Ali I didn't think he had it in him to absorb a beating like that. That's what gained him my respect and he lost a lot of it by his dirty tactics in the rematch but he certainly gained it back in the third fight. There will never be fights like that again
@@goatlps Total garbage. He said Frazier was a "true man" after Manila and apologised many times, including in his book Soul of a Butterfly. So it's even in print. Frazier, however (who I do like and even met once), NEVER once apologised for calling Ali "Clay" which he started saying BEFORE Ali said any of this shit. It was during Ali's ban (all on YT if you do the research).
My favorite heavyweight fighter ever. I love Ali of course too- but Joe gets nowhere near enough respect. He was a bit undersized, he worked his ASS off in a slaughterhouse and still trained, and he was all class. And that left hook was maybe the best left hook in all of boxing history. Joe's the MAN- a real inspiration. RIP
@@joshuatree5620 Exactly. Hence the saying "styles make fights". You had 3 styles with these guys that were basically the "rock-paper-scissors" of boxing: -The pure boxer (Ali) -The pressure inside fighter (Frazier) -The powerful slugger (Foreman) The outside boxer is favored vs the powerful slugger but weaker vs the inside fighter. The inside boxer is favored vs the pure boxer but weaker vs the slugger. And of course the powerful slugger is favored vs the inside fighter but weaker vs the pure boxer. There's not a better proof of this than Ali-Frazier-Foreman... another good example is Cotto-Margarito-Mosley. Repeat (everyone say it out loud): styles make fights. "A beat B and B beat C, therefore A also beats C" is very often naive and completely wrong- I can think of too many examples to even list. And I'm sick of having the argument with people who poorly comprehend this point.
@@Nautilus1972 lol stop spreading hate and negative messages all over the place.. and the fact that you are trying to bring Conor into Ali's spotlight makes it even funnier. Even Conor himself said many times that he was inspired by Ali and that no one may get close to what he achieved in and outside the ring.
You know that Ali was much more racist to people of colour then any lineal heavy weight champion boxer while holding the title? Like with Joe Frazier, the "Gorilla in Manilla" classic. Ali was campaigning against racism and stood for representation in the public when there wasn't a lot. It was much worse back then, but at least they didn't say the n word lmao
@@thefollowing8127 And after he defeated smoking joe in the thrilla in Manila he sat on a stool in the center of the ring sweat dripping off his face and said, Louisville is the greatest. so much loyalty.
Ali was not around before rapping........ the slaves brought African "call and response" music to this country. The elements and improvisational nature of this music which they used to sing on the fields eventually found its way into the freestyling and improvisational nature of blues, jazz, and rock...... hip hop as a culture which contained rap and break dancing was an extension of that musical culture. What was blues? It was black singers "freestyling" improvised words about their life struggle over some sort of musical accompaniment. Rap is an extension of that merely. Period
@@CSRookie I know... however he was the first to use a rhyming style and look bad with a rapping swag. Poetic beauty with words of style that made the crowds go wild. Freshly smooth with the hands to get down and grove. He was the first that didn't have to wait for the girls to shake. Inspired the first Street talk but the only man to back it up with the street walk. He is secretly the first element of hip-hop.....in my opinion anyways.
Allah is Lord Jesus Christ. He is Immanuel meaning God among us. God has always been Lord Jesus Christ. He is the Lord God. Jesus says Moses and the prophets wrote about Me in the Bible. LORD JESUS CHRIST IS THE GREATEST THERE IS. HE OVERCAME THE WORLD. HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT EVER DID SO. IT IS WRITTEN.
@@mertdemir8963 Lord Jesus Christ is the Alpha and Omega. He is coming soon as mentioned in Revelation in the Holy Bible, His actual book. He is the First and the Last. God=Lord Jesus Christ is the Messiah (Savior). Amen!
I love it when Ali responds to that black guy asking him when he will appear in movies (15:00). Ali was spot on when he decries what we today call "blackxpliotation," saying how the black movies then were so demeaning to black culture by perpetuating such negative stereotypes. The guy was so perceptive and truly ahead of his time. RIP to him and Joe Frazier as well.
what do i know..i'm just a white schmuck! But....I grew up watching Ali...and NEVER saw a more dazzling FIGHTER combined with such warrior spirit and humor and brilliant come-back. I once met him in a bank lobby in Chicago...way past his main prime...He had such a larger then life quality in every way...I was pretty much speechless...I saw him walk in from across the street and ran over to say hi. Yeah Tyson in his prime miight, have given Ali some pause...but in my mind...Ali .....IS the Greatest boxer in all history and when you add in his attainments as a man ....his political smarts...his Hugeness as a Human Being.....To me....it goes past race stuff...and I'm not denying those insane awful realities.......into an example of power combined with grace that the whole world paid attention to....Even gone now...still...to me...the Greatest......It would be insulting to deny the racial issues that are part of everyone in these last crazy centuries...but somehow he absorbed the full knowledge of that....never denied it...put it OUT-FRONT...adopted the Muslim wisdom at a cost to his career.....but in such a courageous way..... that...I'd bet even some KKK creatures in their "hearts" , if that muscle can be called a heart in such demented cases....had to secretly respect the obvious.....a MAN so obviously wonderful and truthful and courageous that only a soul-sick animal could deny it....I'm preaching to the choir I know....But wow....When you see the highest examples of what a person can do......I feel good just thinking about him.....The MEMORY of such a person has more value then the living life of many lesser people....
tom berz I really love what you had to say my friend. Thank you for taking the time to write it all out there. All the best. PS I’m so jealous you got to meet him! Wow!
Yep. That was classic Ali. He knew he said "boy" and he had to stop from laughing afterward. But, while I know Ali said some things that were VERY hurtful to Frazier in the past, I wish Joe would have been a bit more light-hearted during this show, because it was obvious Ali was trying to be.
These giants had incredible principles, and ethics, and I'm so proud of them for standing up to for their principles. I'm a white man or irish heritage, and know intimately the hardships of oppression, and admire greatly any man who stands up against hate. God bless.
Mcgregor was the king of his era when it came to trash talk. Not defending him as a person hes a cock but the build up to the Aldo fight was on another level. He was showing up in brazil standing on cars screaming while ripping a picture of Aldo and chewing it. There were 100s of people around him. Whether you find it distasteful or not, it was impressive lol
Sure this is good but the fact you even talked about McGregor's trash talk and the fact millions of others talk about it factually make McGregor better in terms of promotion to a fight. McGregor is by far one of the best promotional fighters so far. Dram = attention. People love to see confrontation and over dramatized events even if its just to see the bad guy get beat the fuck up.
@@gf-qd4ek Young kid, you know NOTHING about Ali do you?? It's easy to be a sensation of your time, but it's a whole nother thing to be a LEGEND of the centry. Just for the fact that you try to say Connor mcnugget is better than Ali shows your young age. Son, if you only knew.. Connor himself even said he's not comparable to Ali. Please sit down, young lad
They respected each other, but Ali did kinda take it too far when promoting the fights. Also didn't help that Frazier has admitted before that he was too thin-skinned when Ali went on his tirades.
And, they NEVER EVER WILL BE FORGOTTEN!!!, I GREATLY ADMIRED, AND LOVED THEM BOTH, BUT, ALI, WAS BY FAR THE GOAT!!!, SURE JOE BEAT HIM 1X, BUT, ALI DEFEATED JOE FAIR AND SQUARE IN THEIR NEXT 2 BOUTS EVEN THOUGH THEY NEARLY KILLED ANOTHER!!! + ALI WENT TOO HOSPITAL FOR A CHECK UP AFTER THE BOUT!!, But!!! Joe Frazier was hospitalized for just over A month in intensive care too!! Same as, after their 2nd fight!!! + Ali absolutely FLOGGED George foreman!!!, Whereas, foreman absolutely anhialated joe!!! And he got sick of knocking him down!!! In the 4th knock down, Joe's feet literally left the canvas
Great champions...both of them! I watch "The Thrilla in Manila" every now and again and I still sit on the edge of my seat with anticipation and goosebumps when I do. Even though Ali won that fight, both fighters expended all that they had in the ring that night and both of them came about as close to death as any boxer could without crossing over to the other side. I loved Ali. In death, I've learned to love Joe Frazier just as much as I love Ali. May they both rest in peace.
Its sad cause we always knew how great Ali was,it wasnt until Joes Death that some people gave him his due,or even realised who he really was.everybody heard the name "Smokin' Joe Frazier" but it seems very few actually knew the man that title belonged too.
@@VoIPPortland Don't be so delicate. It just shows that back then people could joke about differences without getting emotional. Todays generation could learn a lot from this interview.
One thing Frazier and other fighters knew for sure about Ali: being in the ring with and facing his fists is more merciful than being in an interview with and facing his tongue!
Back when people were relaxed, funny, well spoken and well dressed - even boxers. There's a distinct pleasent wibe to this whole clip. A way of communication that cannot be found in the 2000s.
WWE needs to watch and take notes! This is what you call a fantastic work! Joe couldn't help but laugh at some of the Ali rhetoric 😆 Ali loved Frazier and vice versa. Ali had gift of gab, Frazier did not; however, Ali gave him "lay-ups" so he could have a decent comeback. Ali might be the overall most talented entertainer in history. He could have been a legendary stand-up comedian, actor, or a top pro-wrestler very easily.
They didn't love each other during their Feud they gained each other's respect the way Frazier just destroyed Ali in the first fight with Ali kept fighting back the second fight was no good because Muhammad Ali ruined it with his over 130 illegal holding behind the head bullshit crap but then this is really in Manila probably the most brutal boxing sweet ever well I don't know because Ali's jaw was completely destroyed after the first one Frazier lost 11 lbs of water weight in the ring and couldn't even hold his hands up at the end he was so punched out and then when Frazier didn't come out for the last round and the Philippines Ali collapsed out of exhaustion and the brutal beating that his body took
Lay ups??? What the fuck does that even mean.loved each other ???? Maybe after thier careers was over.but even into old age joe was bitter at the way ali talked shit about him.as a young man ali was a showman yes .and he was also an ingrate and an asshole.and by the way i watched the 1st fight live and joe won hands down.yes ali probably out pointed him but in boxing at least in those days heavy punches counted for more abd so did the cadence.as in who was in control landing the heavier blows at the end.and that was hands down jie Frazier.greatest fight in history.they litterally ruined each other .lay ups !!!come on .thats extremely unfair .ali gave him nothing !!!!! Ali wanted that title back bad yiu think he went in thier and said i like joe ill let him go the distance.meanwhile joe is the one who carried muhammad.giving him $$$$ while suspended and lobbying for alis right to fight.stupid and very unkind comment.
Robert Jones calm down dude. He talking about the jokes. (Referring to the layups) You way to tense bro....slow down and breathe. We all know the history of the fights.
Ali spoke so powerfully back then. Its a shame they poisoned him to keep him from talking through the rest of his time alive. He would have continued to changed the world beyond.
@@MyDante71 thanks for sharing. This my first time reading about this conspiracy, but it makes perfectly good sense. Ali words were powerful and he was able to articulate himself very well to the point he could draw people to him. He was a wonderful man!
5:08 The G.O.A.T dropping some knowledge ! Damn it man I love the man, in all the showmanship you get the sense that he never disliked Joe. he probably really liked the man.
RIP both genius...!!!Ali is not only boxer, he is the warrior of human rigths...! Smokin is miracle's how moving in the ring, it's hard to put punches...! Ali is the best for me in a sport, becouse he's the best ATHLETHA...Muhammad is a most perfect boxer and sportist ever...! This is my opinion...! This people is really KING in a he's ERA...!
The hardship these men went though growing up in daily life is what seperated them from the fighters of today.these men were "fighting" long before they ever stepped in a ring.true warriors.
These two giants of the game had a beautiful friendship, and it still warms to heart to see them together. Eternal life is theirs, and peaceful rest is guaranteed.
What many don't realize, and Ali acknowledges it here, was that Joe would blatantly dis him by intentionally calling him Clay, which was why Ali called him a Tom. But as Ali said here, Joe did that for the express purpose of antagonizing him, even though he would spend his entire whining about how Ali had dissed him.
Two greats. Ali was acting like a petulant child right through this interview. It was obvious his sole aim was to irritate Frazier but, it all looked very playful to me.
You do understand the Ali persona evidenced in this interview was what caused him to transcend his sport right? Without it, he's just another (great) boxer. Not the most influential sports person of all time.
1:12 Although the audience laughed when muhammad said he hoped that his children would play with Joe's children, but he seemed deadly serious. He and joe had a wonderful friendship. As he continues to point out how America loved to watch teo black men punch each other, the audience laughed again, but Muhammad face ad he closed his sentence tells us he was being deadly serious again and was unhappy with the audience laughter. God rest their souls.
